The countdown is on for this years European Championship, and to get you in the mood we are going back 28 years to relive Euro '96. In the final instalment of this four-part series, fittingly John B looks at the two sides who reached the Euro ‘96 Final at Wembley - Czech Republic and Germany. To help provide an insight, John spoke to Czech sports journalist Jiri Hosek and Co-Host of Yellow Wall Pod Matthias Suuck. It was the Czech Republic's first campaign since the separation of Czechoslovakia in 1993 and they won a tight qualification group ahead of Netherlands and Norway to reach the Finals. Their fighting spirit saw them recover from an opening match defeat to Germany to progress ahead of Italy and Russia, before Karel Poborsky's improvised lob saw off Portugal in the last eight then a dramatic penalty shootout win over France saw them unexpectedly reach the Final. The Germans, meanwhile, were expected to bring the trophy back to their homeland and qualified with minimum fuss, dropping just five points from their ten qualifiers, and cruised to wins over the Czech's and Russia in Group C before holding Italy to a goalless draw. A narrow win over Croatia in the Quarter Finals was followed by a penalty shootout win over the hosts England to face the Czech's again in the Final, where Oliver Bierhoff came off the bench to score a double, including a golden goal winner, to secure victory for Berti Vogts's side. Jiri and Matthias give a good insight into their respective journeys and also give a combined Euro 96 & 2024 XI for each nation, which throws some interesting selections. Footnote - John is also doing this series as a build-up to the launch of his second book, We're Going To Wembley: Scotland's Euro '96 journey by Pitch Publishing, which he has co-written with Neil Doherty. The countdown is on for this years European Championship, and to get you in the mood we are going back 28 years to relive Euro '96. In the third of this four-part series, John B looks at the fortunes of Portugal and Netherlands by speaking to PortuGOAL creator Tom Kundert and Dutch football expert at Flashscore Finley Crebolder. Having been knocking on the door for a place at Euro ‘92 and USA ‘94, Portugal strolled to qualification and with the talents of Luis Figo and Rui Costa they were considered a dark horse for the tournament. However, despite winning their group with seven points from three games, they came unstuck against Czech Republic in the Quarter Finals. Meanwhile, the Dutch endured a difficult route to England, where they needed a playoff victory against Republic of Ireland to secure their place, and then they scraped into the last eight on goal difference ahead of Scotland before a penalty shootout defeat to France ended their hopes of success. Tom and Finley give a good insight into their respective journeys and also give a combined Euro 96 & 2024 XI for each nation, which throws some interesting selections. The countdown is on for this years European Championship, and to get you in the mood we are going back 28 years to relive Euro '96. In the second of this four-part series, John B looks at the fortunes of Scotland and tournament debutants Croatia by speaking to Scottish Sun journalist Gordon Waddell and Croatian Journalist for 24 Sata newspaper Tomislav Gabelic. Scotland recovered from the failure to qualify for the USA '94 World Cup to reach their second consecutive Euros, where fate decreed they would face the Auld Enemy in their own backyard. Ironically, after a heartbreaking defeat at Wembley, Scotland fans cheered England goals as the hosts did their bit to help their neighbours, but the Scots fell agonisingly short of a Quarter Final berth. In their first ever international qualification campaign since becoming independent in 1992, Croatia stormed to the finals by winning a group containing World Cup runners-up Italy, even defeating the Italians in their own backyard. They made a good impression in the finals too, defeating reigning European Champions Denmark thanks to a moment of genius by Davor Suker en route to the Quarter Finals, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Germany. Gordon and Tomislav give a good insight into their respective journeys and also give a combined Euro 96 & 2024 XI for each nation, which throws some interesting selections. The Town park the Premier League action for the magic of the FA Cup as Bolton Wanderers are the visitors to Kenilworth Road for a third round tie on Sunday afternoon. Kev is joined by The Lutonian journalist James Cunliffe to look ahead of the Hatters' opening match in the competition with a reflection on the importance of the cup, both to the Town and to the two chaps. But first of all, the news broke hours before recording that Andros Townsend had signed a contract extension to stay a Hatter for the foreseeable future, so we discuss his move and his impact since joining the club.  The attention then turns to the visit of Bolton, where two former Luton players were expected to be involved, however that is already down to just one with the news that Carlos Mendes-Gomes is already away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Two other potential dangers are highlighted. The boys then put themselves into the shoes of Rob Edwards to try and come up with the potential starting XI for the game. Will there be wholesale changes or just tinkering to the team? Who'll win the Premier League? Who will be Manchester United's most improved player? Who will become the fans' scapegoat? Hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait give their predictions for these questions, and many, many more in the latest episode of the Manchester United Weekly Podcast. The two Reds preview Monday night's Old Trafford encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers, discussing the impact of a new manager for the Midlands club. They consider who should start up front and on the left-wing, and what they're expecting to see from the game. Then they talk the likely exit of former-captain Harry Maguire, who looks set to join West Ham for £30m, assessing his potential replacements in Jean-Claude Todibo and Benjamin Pavard. After giving all their season predictions, Harry announces the title of his first book: The Men Who Made Manchester United. Released on 25 September with Pitch Publishing, it brings you the definitive history of Manchester United before Sir Matt Busby's post-war halcyon days. Inside are tales that will make you squirm, laugh and cry: the transfer fee of two freezers of ice cream, the tragic death of a young footballer and his forgotten family, the fight for the right to unionise, Edwardian Cockney Reds and the pelting stones of the angry residents of Budapest. In December 2020, an Israeli football club made worldwide headlines. The news that a UAE royal had bought 50 per cent of Beitar's shares shook Israel and the football world. Beitar, proclaimed by some of its own fans as 'the most racist club in the country', is a club like no other in Israel. While Israeli football as a whole is a space where Israelis of all ethnicities and foreigners can co-exist, Beitar won't even sign a Muslim player for fear of its own far-right supporters' group, La Familia.  On the Border: The Rise and Decline of the Most Political Club in the World (Pitch Publishing, 2022) is the fascinating tale of a club that began as a sports movement of a liberal national Zionism party and became an overt symbol of right-wing views, Mizrahi identity and eventually hardcore racism and nationalism. The book explores the radicalisation of Beitar and the fight for the soul of the club between the racists and open-minded fans. It is also a story of Jerusalem, the most volatile place on Earth, and how the holy city and the influence of religion have shaped Beitar. Founded in 1936, the club took its name from a Zionist organization set up in 1923 by students in the capital of Latvia, Riga, following a visit by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the Zionist Revisionist and founder of the paramilitary group Irgun. Beitar's story mirrors that of its city. For thirty years, under the British Mandate, impoverished young Mizrahim (Jews from Arab countries) had kicked a ball around Jerusalem's Musrara neighbourhood with Arab friends. The war of 1948 changed that. Subsequent events sharpened the divide, leading to the unrepentant racism of La Familia, Beitar “ultras” who began by making monkey noises at a player from Cameroon and graduated to chants threatening death to Arabs. Employing violence and intimidation, they ensured no Muslim could play for Beitar, thereby betraying a key element of Jabotinsky's scheme – equality for Arabs. Episode seven of the Talking Devils podcast is a special archive interview with the former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson. With this being FA Cup weekend, what better time to release this 2019 interview with 'Big Ron', undertaken by Wayne Barton. “The only way you're going to Old Trafford,” Ron Atkinson remembers telling Bryan Robson, “is if I go there too.” Atkinson didn't expect Robson to be the first one on the phone when he got the Manchester United job in 1981. Atkinson is a controversial figure in Manchester United and football history but was a necessity to be interviewed for the integrity and completion of the book Que Sera Sera. And his place in United history should not be understated. His footballing ideals, and their attachment to United's cultural identity, are explored in that book. This is part of the interview that was undertaken for it. In this podcast you will hear stories of the great visionary coach Jimmy Hogan and how Robson and Remi Moses arrived at Old Trafford. This is not how you would usually hear Ron Atkinson talk so it felt like a good moment to share it. Que Sera Sera is published by Pitch Publishing and is available through Amazon, Waterstones and all major book retailers.
