In Galatians 1:10, Apostle Paul emphasizes prioritizing God's approval over human validation amid societal pressures. He reflects on the importance of staying true to one's faith and the potential sacrifices made for the sake of pleasing others. This reminder encourages authentic living aligned with God's values rather than societal expectations.
Anxiety Rules - Pleasing People - Blair And Tracy by Waypoint Community Church
Hey friend! From my heart to yours-let's talk about how the way we love people, doesn't always equal the way God loves us. I pray this blesses you!
Are you leading others toward following God's voice, or are they leading you? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 15. I've titled this chapter "The Consequences of Disobedience." In yesterday's devotional, we discussed how Saul's insecurity led him to disobedience, masking his fears with empty sacrifices. We explored the importance of confessing our insecurities to God before they drive us into sin. Today, we will read the consequences of his disobedience. We start with verse 24: Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. — 1 Samuel 15:24 King Saul finally breaks down. His rationalizing, deflecting, blaming, and explaining end because he finally feels the consequences of his sin. But you need to see the issue. His insecurities have led him to listen to the wrong voice. Instead of listening to God's voice, he was listening to the people's. Instead of pleasing God, he is trying to please the people. This verse outright rejects democracy in the transition from Judges to the Kings. We learn that democracy was not God's plan. We all know why. People are sinful, and sometimes, so is their voice. They advocate and vote for their selfish desires. For those in the US, we live in this socio-political experiment, and it won't end well. In Saul's situation, he was appointed God's voice to the people, not vice versa. I cannot predict the future of our nation or any nation. But I know this: believers can always be a voice for God in a sinful world. We can proclaim God's voice into a world that proclaims their own. This world has no problem with proclaiming its ideologies. They are willing to sacrifice the unborn and their vas deferens to their ideologies. But as believers, we have a divine call to be the voice of God in a world that chooses to ignore his voice and listen to its own. While you have breath, this is what you should be doing. Proclaiming the voice of God to your family, workplace, church, and the world. Next here is what Saul says next in 25-31: "Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the Lord.” And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” Then he said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God.” So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the Lord. — 1 Samuel 15:25-31 Saul appears to be repentant, but we see his sin has consequences. This is true in every form of leadership. Sin has dire consequences that affect our ability to lead others and continue in the same role. Saul should not be surprised by this. Listening to God was the condition of his continuity as the leader of the people. Go back to 1 Samuel 12:14-15: If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well. But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king. — 1 Samuel 12:14-15 This draws out one of the great tensions of leadership. Leadership is contingent on our followership of God. You see God is the only leader. The rest of us are followers. However some of us are allowed, or in this case as Saul appointed to the leadership of God's followers. If we steward our leadership well, we may be allowed to steward a greater following. But if we fail, we are removed and rejected from leadership. We can repent and bow before God, but this does not always result in us continuing with the role because we were unable to steward the conditions of the role. This is why I am okay with God removing me or any other fallen spiritual leader from their role if they are unable to lead God's people. And as we know, God is going to anoint a new leader, David, who enters the story in the next chapter. But still, then there is some unfinished business. Let's read a couple of more verses: Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” And Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord in Gilgal. — 1 Samuel 15:32-33 Samuel had to do what the King was supposed to do. I love this ending, not because of the brutality of it, nor because I am a man of the cloth, but because it makes a profound point. It takes a man of God who hears the voice of God to do the work of God. If you go back to Chapter 12 again, you will see that the people felt Samuel was getting to old and they wanted a successor. But instead of finding another man of God to act as Judge and Prophet, the people demanded a King. God gave them what they wanted, but as we see here the King is not up for the task. So a very old man chosen by God has to do the work that the King won't do. The bottom line is, God chooses leaders who listen to him. These are the leaders he appoints to lead his followers and nothing less. So listen to God today and do nothing less otherwise you too will be removed. #LeadByFaith, #ListenToGod, #ObeyHisVoice

Join us for part eight of our series, Sonship, where we learn about the tension of pleasing God and pleasing other people.Discussion Questions:1. In which area from the list below do I struggle with pleasing people, and how does this affect my life?- I am preoccupied with what other people think about me.- I have a hard time saying “No,” to people.- I complain about being too busy.- I am overly sensitive to criticism.- I often avoid conflict and difficult decisions.2. What is the root of the pain that drives me to find my value in people pleasing? Identify it and lay it down at the feet of Jesus.3. How does having confidence in my sonship or daughterhood as a child of God change the way I live life? The way I interact with others? How I view myself?
We can aim to love and put others' desires and needs before ours because Jesus has done that very thing for us – it means that we can aim to please others without becoming people pleasers.
Though we need to care on some level what others think, we can care too much. When we allow ourselves to be manipulated for fear of disappointing others, it doesn't just affect us physically, socially, and emotionally; it affects us spiritually. But there is a healthy balance, and it's found in Jesus. (Talk by Joshua Ott)

Today I reveal the 4 Forms of Opinion Ownership and a new form of Entrepreneurialism... Do you think about what others are thinking about you? You're about to learn some TRUTHS that'll set you FREE...while adding incredible value to your life, and the lives of others. It's an ongoing topic of discussion in my S.O.L. DATE SISTERHOOD, as well as with my coaching clients, and all the coaching I do. It's the topic of worrying about what others think about YOU. You're so concerned about what “THEY” are thinking about YOU…but is it possible that YOU'RE actually thinking that about YOURSELF (at some level?) Yes, it's true! OWN IT, my dear! Stop trying to own everyone else's opinions about you. Instead, OWN YOURS. What would that look like for you? What would your life look like for you to own your own opinion? The 4 Levels of OPINION OWNERSHIP Are… 1. No ownership. It's like you're homeless…and you feel helpless. You don't own your opinion, nor do you own your responsibility. There's no work. And I've got news for you…It doesn't work! Everyone's opinion of YOU is important. Or so it seems. 2. Renting. Think of it as leasing…or is it “pLEASING”… People pleasing. That's right, you're a genuine (although inauthentic) People Pleaser. You try to please everyone, while not really pleasing anyone…especially yourself. You also try to own everyone else's opinion of YOU. You blame them for thinking about you in the way that they do, when honestly…YOU are the one who BELIEVES these things about you (at some level.) OWN IT, MY DEAR! 3. Own/Occupy. When you own your own business…and you're not in others' business. You finally own the fact that others' opinions of you are none of your business, and you don't make it your business. You can think of this as a new form of “entrepreneurialism.” 4. Own/Landlord. YOU'RE PAID FOR YOUR OPINION. You own your opinion of YOU. You don't blame others' opinions of you on them. You own your OWN opinions of YOU. Others' opinions of you are not your business. Your opinion of you is your business. And now, others actually ask (or pay) for your opinion. You can think of this as the ultimate form of ENTREPRENEURIALISM. You care more about people, and what they care about, then caring about their opinion of YOU. You help them to believe in themselves by sharing the TRUTH with them. Is it possible to live biblically balanced lives? I can tell you that it is possible, but it is not easy. Pleasing God or Pleasing People? If you're ever going to get the right balance in your life—God's balance—you're going to have to care more about pleasing God than you do about pleasing people. You've got to want God's approval more than you want the approval of people. You may find that hard to do, because our natural bent is to want the approval and acceptance of people. And we can become absolutely enslaved by a desire to receive the approval of people. Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). This is a good verse to pray into your life. Ask God to develop you into the woman or man who cares more about pleasing God than pleasing people. Making Deposits Living balanced lives has to become intentional. So, to help you do this, I want you to think of yourself as a bank account, where deposits and withdrawals are made. Here are two very important deposits that you must intentionally put into your “bank accounts” if you ever hope to live biblically balanced lives: Deposit the Word of God Psalm 119:28: "My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word." I hope you are involved in some kind of Bible study program all the time. You need in-depth study of God's Word, and you need structured reading of the Bible. His Word strengthens us. I think of a couple who lost six children in one horrible automobile accident in 1993. Janet, their mother, shared with us that the Word of God was her constant source of strength to get her through those horrible days, and even yet, through the sorrow of losing her children. When you consistently deposit God's Word into your mind, you are adding great strength and stamina to your life. It will get you through tough days. Deposit the Joy of the Lord Nehemiah 8:10b: "Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." How do you keep joy in your life? First, you control your thinking. Negative thoughts, critical thoughts, judgmental thoughts, complaining thoughts—these will all rob you of joy. Secondly, you confess your sins immediately and keep a clean slate with the Lord.
Romans 10:5-13. Live a life that is pleasing unto GOD and everything will be organically placed in its rightful position. There is nothing more devastating in the life of a believer than to see someone feeling or speaking less of themselves based upon the opinions of men and not what GOD has said solely. JESUS loves us and HE wants what's best for us (Jeremiah 29:11). If you have believed HIM in your heart and confessed HIM with your mouth, you are SAVED today! Be free from the opinions of man! GOD BLESS YOU. Press Play! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

I've wanted to talk about this for a while, and finally have the space to do it. Our desire is to serve people as best we can, but many of us start sliding into the arena of pleasing people. There is quite a difference between the two. I also want to equip you as best as possible, so here's a free resource I'd love for you to grab! My student's call me the Queen of Minis and we're all in the thick of minis season right now. This is a blueprint that's completely free and will level up your minis game. If you've never made $3000 on your minis session then this is for you! It's called http://www.Rebeccaricephoto.com/3K-minis ($3K Mini Sessions Blueprint)! Defining Your Job as a PhotographerMost of us start off thinking our role is to please our clients or simply make them happy. And really this topic is one to be looked at by any business owner. The truth is, pleasing people is deceptive. In the moment it seems valid and right. But at the end of the day the raving reviews will fade away and we're left to ourselves. We have to determine in the height of our careers and in the every day grind that what we're doing is not just dependent upon another's opinion. It can be a tricky thing, wanting people to value your character and slipping over into letting that define you. I will say, it's not wrong to desire good reviews and response. But it should be because of your integrity! We should want people to think highly of us, not because of how we please them or what we offer them in exchange for their high opinion. But because of the quality of who we are. What's the Motivation? When it comes to pleasing people vs. serving people you have to ask yourself, what's my motivation? Often times, pleasing others is rooted in selfish ambition. I want to please you so you can benefit me. Every business needs to establish standards and morals. I strive to keep the same standard regardless of what opinion I'm facing. When your motivation is to serve people well most times you end up pleasing them, but you're not seeking approval. You're goal isn't selfish, it's for others! When you know your standards you can "judge" yourself based on how you served them. So when you don't get back high praise your soul isn't crushed because the goal was to serve clients well. When you perform your standards and do all the things you set out to do it goes far beyond the transaction. Serving and Profit can go Hand in HandI do understand this is a business. Clearly a standard in my business is to serve clients, but that doesn't mean it's a charity. Don't get it twisted. You don't have to lower your prices or give things away. Photography is my family's sole income. That means we need to be profitable if we want to put food on the table. But this business is also my ministry. I want to serve people well and I can do it through the love of Jesus. I was a youth minister for 9 years and transitioned into doing photography full time. I saw how God opened the door for me and my family to reach people's hearts through photography. This is not my typical podcast, but I believe this matters. When we get it right we'll see a lot less burn out as photographers! The mindset shift in pleasing people vs. serving people can help you set up a long lasting business. That ache inside to be seen true and valued highly, I've felt it too. I've also tried to better myself in other's eyes, gain approval, and secure friendships as if to prove to myself that I matter. Isn't that what we want to be reassured of—what's beneath our people pleasing tendencies—that we matter? Listen in, or if you prefer to read, head on over to the blog. Dialégomai: The PĒØPŁËŠ Conversation With Travis & Kyra Gold
On Season 1 Episode 5 of Dialégomai: The PĒØPŁËŠ Conversation, hosts Travis and Kyra Gold share 5 Spirit-filled biblical handles for Fighting The Idol Of Approval & Pleasing Out Of Reverence For Christ. In this honest conversation, they cover what the Bible says about people pleasing. Sharing biblical wisdom about what it looks like when our people pleasing it about ourselves versus what it looks like when it is out of reverence for Christ and pose some confronting questions to help us discern when our pleasing others is a spirit-filled love, kindness, and service for the sake of Christ or when it is a self-preserving, pride-feeding sin that blinds and leads us to death. They also unpack what it means to live from our identity not for our image and talk about how if the world hates you, keep in mind that hated Jesus first, revealing how Scripture calls us to respond when our enemies hate us. Ending on a note of biblical encouragement to exchange fear of man for fear of the Lord. For accessibility information, Q&A submissions or to get in touch, please email dialegomai@forthepeopleschurch.org For more information about For The PĒØPŁËŠ Church, please visit forthepeopleschurch.org! I believe this is something all of us have struggled with at one time or another. No matter the situation we find ourselves we are always trying to keep everyone happy. Even though we know this impossible, we still burn ourselves out trying. I trust this episode will help you do a self search on why you are consumed with pleasing people.
According to Psychology Today, people pleasing is putting the needs of others above your own in a habitual or neurotic manner. The funny thing is, you may not even like the people you're trying to please. The way we try to please people says more about ourselves than anything else. Not surprisingly, working to please people omay require you to do something that is not right for you. Sadly, when you spend so much time trying to please or keep love of someone you've probably not spending time developing yourself.Let's get into it.
When trying to be all things to all men we let our own self down. Pleasing all the people, all of the time, can be a heavy torch to drag around. Trying to fit to others' lives perfectly leaves you mishapen and worn. Be your own shape! There's no perfect fit, you are perfect by being yourself. Fulfiling yourself, becoming ALL OF YOU, is the only and ultimate wealth.

Stoicism, personal development, and the path of progress - that's what the Practical Stoic podcast was all about, and we retain this message now in The Walled Garden podcast and community. This episode is a re-release of an old podcast episode of the Practical Stoic Podcast (before rebranding to The Walled Garden). For a while, most of my pre-2020 episodes were only available to patrons. I have now made the choice to publish all pre-2020 episodes in order to give the complete view of my path through Stoicism, moving from the more practical personal-developmental ideas toward the deeper philosophical and theological understanding of Stoicism. The podcast is, of course, now called The Walled Garden. The Walled Garden came about in late 2021, and is a collaboration between myself, Sharon Lebell, and Kai Whiting. The Walled Garden is not just a podcast—it's a community of like-minded philosophers and seekers who are dedicated to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, virtue, and the divine. We hope you'll join us at thewalledgarden.com.
