Zan Dubin and I met in Frogtown beside the LA River and quickly dove into her long history of activism, journalism, and life hear in LA. Born Alexandra, she was nicknamed after a character from The Little Foxes.Zan arriving in Westwood in 1966 at age nine — and she's remained committed to both the city and the causes close to her heart ever since.Her dedication to electric vehicles began in 2002, when she and her then-husband bought a Toyota RAV4 EV. They became active in saving leased EVs from being crushed, founding Plug In America.“We were able to save about 800 cars that would have been crushed,” she said, and her activism hasn't stopped. Wearing a T-shirt that reads “Question Internal Combustion,” she embodies a lifetime of environmental commitment.But what of the posterboy of modern EV vehicles: The notorious Elon Musk?“I abhor Elon,” she said plainly. “I'm really sad and angry at everything that he's doing. However, I think an even greater and more imminent threat is climate change.” While she criticizes Musk's politics and behavior, she praises Tesla's engineering and the ever-growing charging network's reach.

GMC HUMMER EV FLIPS ARE ALREADY GETTING OUT OF HAND - The GMC Hummer EV may be an all-new offering, but plenty of people are willing to part with their hard-earned cash to experience the new electric pickup before anyone else. In fact, demand has been so strong that, in December, we already reported on 60,000 preorders. - With all this crazy interest in the vehicle, it's no surprise that some early reservation holders are now looking to make a quick buck, but the scale of the markups we're seeing lately is just mindblowing. - some people are offering up the Edition 1 for as much as $325,000. Keep in mind that, although an $80,000 version is coming as a base model, the Edition 1 is not much more expensive and is supposed to sell for around $105,000. That means that these new markups are reaching as much as triple the original asking price, which is arguably worse than what some supercar dealers will do. - a quick Google search reveals that $300,000 resale prices are more common than not. Heck, The Drive cites Hummer Chat forum users selling reservation slots, which cost $100 direct from GM at release, for as much as $60,000, while the same forum has Edition 1s selling for upwards of $262k. For a truck not yet delivered. Insane seems too weak a word to describe this phenomenon. Original Source : https://carbuzz.com/news/gmc-hummer-ev-flips-are-already-getting-out-of-hand AMERICAN BATTERY FACTORY PLANS BATTERY CELL GIGAFACTORIES TO SUPPORT U.S. STORAGE MARKET - American Battery Factory (ABF), a manufacturer incubated from Utah-based energy storage firm Lion Energy, announced plans to deploy a network of battery cell gigafactories to boost U.S. domestic energy storage supply - ABF will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for storage suppliers and pack integrators that can be used for utility-scale storage, residential storage and even certain large mobile uses. The company will deploy smaller factories producing between 3 GW and 15 GW of battery cells, which can be installed in a manner of weeks to meet demand. - According to AFB, the company's batteries will perform at least 10,000 discharge cycles with a 20-30 year lifespan. The products will be designed for storage systems on the utility- and residential-scale level, as well as military uses and certain large electric vehicles like trucks, buses and trams. SAIC aims to lift sales of new-energy vehicles to more than 2.7 million units in 2025, a 270% increase from 2021. - Q: What are the company's medium-term plans?A: Plans call for investing 300 billion yuan over the five years through 2025 in new-energy vehicles, connected cars and the smart segment. We will transform into a high-tech company oriented toward the customer.Sales of new-energy vehicles will be increased to more than 2.7 million units annually in 2025. Our company plans to raise the percentage of new-energy vehicles to overall sales to at least 32%. - We aim to become China's top company in autonomous driving tech, reaching mass production of Level 4 vehicles. My car is in my garage. I can't move it because I have no money.” - Saba, a 70-year-old retiree, used to drive to the mall. He doesn't go in any of the shops or restaurants – he just likes to sit in the comfy armchairs and chat with his friends. - But the bus takes too long, and is too expensive. So he called a friend, who picked him up. - “In the US we really saw an increase in automobile use in the post-world war two period, the baby boom generation. At that point in time, we had this new availability of relatively inexpensive mass-produced automobiles, this is the first time that people from middle income households can purchase a motor vehicle,” said Gregory Rowangould, the director of the Transportation Research Center at the University of Vermont and an associate professor in civil and environmental engineering. - The construction and planning of these new suburbs rarely included viable bus or train options. Many new neighborhoods didn't have walkable amenities either. Now, people needed cars to go shopping, or take their kids to the swimming pool, and certainly to get to work. - It's a legacy that has endured. Americans drive much, much more than other nationalities. - In 2019 American motorists drove an average of 14,263 miles a year, according to the US Department of Transportation. That puts the US at the top of the list in terms of miles driven, and it isn't even close. In the next highest country, Canada, people drove an average of 9,562 miles a year in 2018. The average car in the UK was driven for 7,134 miles in 2019. - Meanwhile some experts have suggested the spike in prices could serve as a wake-up call for the public and politicians to move away from a reliance on oil, and towards greener transport methods. - With gas prices unlikely to fall anytime soon, a shift away from America's car dependency, and serious investment in public transport would not just benefit the environment, but also the millions of Americans who are struggling financially. Every dealer, I truly believe, will sell EVs [and] wants to sell EVs, if that's what our customers want.” - So what can dealers do to make sure that customers know that? Chris Neff, EV Dealer Training Specialist with Plug In America suggested dealers attend drive events throughout the country, including National Drive Electric Week. “That's where EV folks gather and share information and they're always looking for dealers to come,” he said. - Knowing a buyer's lifestyle and motivation for buying an EV is a great opportunity for dealers to provide information that buyers will value, said Chris Potgeiter, Product Marketing Manager at automotiveMastermind. For example, if the EV buyer is a homeowner, a dealer might mention an in-home charging station. If the buyer is an apartment dweller, direct them to local charging stations near them. Maybe the buyer has expressed frustration over being a frequent visitor to the service department. A dealer can point out that an EV has fewer moving parts that could break and can offer a new level of reliability. Coupled with the increase demand for electrification and the approaching fleet of EVs, dealers are facing potential electrical gridlock. - Gouda also recommended that dealers who are installing EV infrastructure, such as transformers and panels, take a long-term view when it comes to planning. “Everything you build should have a modular capability to it. You want to future-proof these components and build the foundation to expand your business in EVs. EVE makes lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are cheaper to produce because they use iron instead of more expensive nickel and cobalt. But LFP batteries generally offer a shorter range on a single charge than the more popular nickel/cobalt alternative. EVE would become the second supplier of LFP batteries to Tesla after China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., or CATL, Reuters reported." https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/eve-denies-battery-supply-deal-tesla FORD FOLLOWS TESLA INTO IN-CAR GAMING"Ford says it is starting to send out in-car gaming with over-the-internet software updates to some of its newer models as the auto giant moves to offer technology to match electric car maker Tesla. For now, the updates are only available to about 100,000 owners of 2021 model year F-150s, Mustang Mach-Es and the upcoming Bronco, but Ford plans to spread the tech across its entire lineup as models are updated. It plans to make 33 million vehicles with the capability by 2028." according to Fox Business: "Ford said there are about 80 different computers in its most sophisticated vehicles that control everything from the infotainment center to brakes and transmission shifts. Already, Ford sent out an update to fix a lighting issue that drained batteries. Among the next updates will be a new version of Amazon Alexa that allows vehicles to communicate with the home assistant without use of a smartphone. Ford also will roll out touchscreen drawing software and simple games for the Mach-E electric SUV. More than 6 million vehicles have the modems and collect vehicle data, but only those with the latest generation of electrical systems can get full over-the-internet updates. The legislation would require an annual EV fee of between $190 and $240, an additional fee of over $150 for anyone who drives their EV more than 9000 miles a year, and an annual surcharge of $10 to fund a charging infrastructure advisory council." writes Car & Driver: "The state, which couches the fees in "equalization for road use consumption for alternatively fueled vehicles" terminology, said these fees would apply to approximately 300,000 vehicles and raise around $37.8 million for the State Highway Fund (SHF) in fiscal year 2022, climbing to $135,594,000 in fiscal year 2026. If passed, the bill would take effect on September 1, 2021. Based on the studies, we’re about 3 years away from gas powered cars leveling off and no longer having growth though they will still be selling. By 2025, a third of all cars will be electric, and by 203, 50% or more will be electric.  David Eagle, founder and CEO of CURRENT EV, is an Emmy Award Winning TV Producer/Director, a Green Technology Entrepreneur and an electric vehicle, solar power/charger expert. We’re joined by Plug In America executive director Joel Levin. Visual art can often bring attention to causes and issues not only in what they display, but how they’re constructed. Currently at the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, students are combatting plastic waste by creating sculpture inspired by coral reefs. We’re joined by Jones College senior Alex Rovner who co-created the piece called ‘Not Coralated.’

National Drive Electric Week, sponsored by Plug-In America, the Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association, is billed as a "national celebration" of electric vehicles. Hundreds of locally organized ride-and-drive events are held throughout the week across the country and overseas. I was in Chicago last month during the last few days of National Drive Electric Week 2017, and stopped by two nearby events to check out the current EV landscape in the Midwest. First up in this episode is the Naperville, Illinois event located about 30 miles west of Chicago, where I speak with Bruce Jones, a longtime board member of the Fox Valley Electric Auto Association. Then we head to Portage, Indiana, about 40 miles east of Chicago, where I interview Lauri Keagle, Membership and Program Manager for South Shore Clean Cities. Neither of these interviews were scheduled ahead of time, and I appreciate Bruce and Lauri for being so game when this stranger showed up unannounced with a field recorder and asked to interview them. And we close with a discussion about some electric car early adopters (true early adopters) who have been driving electric for at least a decade. Rob Bearman, Director, Global Alliances, Utilities and Energy, Better Place Mike DiNucci, VP of Strategic Accounts, Coulomb Technologies Jay Friedland, Legislative Director, Plug In America Jonathan Read, CEO, ECOtality Consumers are ready for electric vehicles. Entrepreneurs and policymakers just need to hustle to work out the kinks in the nationwide networks that will charge the cars, says this panel of experts assembled at Climate One. Automakers see a chance to free their customers from expensive oil, says Mike DiNucci, VP of Strategic Accounts, Coulomb Technologies: “Car companies see a golden opportunity to re-set that paradigm, and become more sustainably connected to their customers.” One company working to re-set the driving experience is Better Place, which plans to sells consumers miles through a network of charging and battery-swapping stations. “Better Place’s philosophy is we sell miles. The customer, the driver, should never have to think about kilowatt-hours. They should never have to plan, or have a timer at their charge spot,” says Rob Bearman, Director, Global Energy Alliance. Jonathan Read, CEO, ECOtality, says his company is working with utilities to develop real-time charging rates as low as $0.05 or $0.06 per kilowatt-hour during off-peak evening hours. “We’re always going to be competing between two minds: home charging and the price of gas. The consumer is always going to be making value judgments in between there. It’s our job as private-sector entrepreneurs to figure what is the tipping point” – at what point will consumers ditch gas cars for electricity, and how will they decide whether to charge in public or at home. Jay Friedland, Legislative Director, Plug In America, who has driven an electric Toyota RAV4 for a decade, says he’s confident consumers will get the price signals. He pays the equivalent of $0.75 per gallon to drive his EV, he says, cheaper than a gas-powered car by a factor of five in California, where gas is averaging over $4 per gallon. “EVs consumers will certainly get the pricing signal that comes from the utility, which is: If I get a bill, and my bill is high because I’ve been charging during the day time, and I know I can get cheap electricity at night, I’m going to go with the cheap electricity,” he says. Friedland and Rob Bearman both emphasize that EVs aren’t just cleaner and cheaper to drive; they are an important part of what Friedland calls a “virtuous cycle” – all-electric cars powered by renewable energy, stored and distributed, in part, by batteries. “Electric vehicles have the promise of taking cars off oil, and electric vehicle batteries have the promise of making the grid more renewable. As far as a cleantech solution that spans a lot of sectors in the cleantech industry, electric vehicles are really powerful,” says Rob Bearman. Paul Scott, Co-founder of Plug-In-America and Chairperson of the Electrical Vehicle Association of California, owns a Toyota Rav 4. He’s driven the car 63.000 miles in 6 years, charging it with electricity from his solar panels. There is no oil to change, no gas to buy, nothing to fix. Every day he gets in, turns it on and it operates perfectly. Every day he gets in, turns it on and it operates as well as the day he bought it. Since he gets electricity from the sun, Scott’s electric bill last yr. was $44.09 for both his house and his car.In 1990 California mandated that by 1998 car manufacturers had to make electric vehicles and make them available to the public so there were some electric cars manufactured. The lobbyists for the gasoline fueled car makers got rid of that law in 2003 and the manufacturers destroyed the cars so no one could say how good they were and how long they lasted. People protested and won against Ford and Toyota and saved about 1000 cars which are still running today and of which one is owned by Paul Scott. These NEVS (Neighborhood Electric Short Range Vehicles) cost from $10,000-18,000, go about 25 or 30 mph and have a range of 30 or 40 miles, but they’re not allowed on roads with speed limits over 35 or 40 miles per hour. There is a growing demand for these cars and that they should be allowed on the highway so car companies are working on developing them. The manufacturing process of a standard car and an electric car take equivalent amounts of energy. Electricity is the best energy. It's domestic and nonpolluting and even if it comes from coal it’s still much cleaner than a Prius. Electricity can be made from solar, wind or hydro, geothermal and tidal instead of coal and/or nukes. Due to government subsidies of solar one can get the cost of the solar panels greatly reduced. An electric car goes about 120 miles on a charge. That’s plenty for Scott who lives in Los Angeles. For a bigger range buy a bigger battery. If you want to go on a very long trip you’d want a plug-in hybrid and can combine with gas but it still uses almost no gas. Mass transit would be much improved using electricity for power as well. In California there is a measure to develop an electric bullet train to go from San Diego to Sacramento. It can use solar panels during the day and wind energy at night. This eliminates the big carbon footprint from flying. Scott describes several models for charging stations—one is like a parking meter where you plug in, do your business and come back to a car that is charged and your money has gone to your municipality, for example, rather than an oil company; another is for a parking lot to have solar panels on top that generate electricity that charges cars underneath while they are keeping cool.
