The introduction of balancing settlement code modification P415 aims to open up wholesale markets to all types of flexibility, decreasing barriers to entry for independent aggregators by allowing participation beyond a consumer's licensed electricity supplier. Energy consumers that can be flexible with usage, do not currently see any value from their actions, except through their licensed electricity supplier, who not offer demand response services. The introduction of P415 will enable flexible consumers to appoint an independent aggregator, allowing participants of demand side response to enter into the wholesale energy markets and incentivize increased consumer participation. In today's episode, Paul Troughton - Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs at Enel X joins Ed to discuss the code change that he put forward. Over the conversation, they discuss:Introduction to P415 and the roles of independent aggregators and virtual trading parties. How demand response works, particularly for commercial and industrial users.Challenges of demand response, supplier compensation and the importance of accurate baselining. The potential impact of P415 and the accessibility it opens up to wholesale markets. The future of demand side response in Great Britain.About our guest Enel X is dedicated to helping some of the world's largest energy consumers protect electricity grid stability in the transition to renewable energy. In it, we talk about the early “DG Beers” days, dunkelflaute, James' take that maybe market structure doesn't matter all that much for DERs, Ben's take how maybe geography is more important than market structure, a reminder that ultimately DERs need to stand on their own merits, different schemes of crediting T&D vs. energy/capacity benefits, if renewables can thrive in a capacity market, trusting the deal-making nature of all governance structures, and so much more about what the hell else who knows! We barely even understand ourselves. Tune in to bathe in the wonkery! This is a public episode. Polestar introduced its latest electric performance SUV, the Polestar 4. The vehicle boasts a 0-100 km/h speed of 3.8 seconds and 544 hp of power. Both dual- and single-motor versions will be available, with long-range versions featuring a 102 kWh battery. The Polestar 4 is expected to launch in China in November 2023, with a global release planned for 2024. Prices start at around €60,000. Polestar plans to start production in South Carolina in 2024 for the U.S. and European markets. The company aims to sell 80,000 cars this year, focusing on delivering more Polestar 2 hatchbacks. Tesla has reduced prices for its Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles, with the Model 3 Standard Range RWD now priced below $40,000. The price cuts come as demand has decreased and interest rates have made car purchases more difficult. A study by iSeeCars found that Tesla has the most car recalls, with Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X making up four of the top five most recalled models. Brands with the least recalls include Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota. Following changes to California's net metering rules, Tesla announced that its Powerwall will help homeowners save up to 92% on their electricity bills. The intelligent and customizable software in Powerwall will optimize energy use for maximum savings. Gogoro partnered with Enel X to create virtual power plants (VPPs) from its battery swapping stations in Taiwan. These VPPs interact with Taiwan's power grid to supply energy when demand exceeds supply. New York State is providing $8.3 million in funding for 255 charging stations across 70 municipalities. The funding comes from the Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant Program. A poll revealed that 40% of U.S. adults are considering switching to electric vehicles (EVs) for their next purchase. However, concerns about high prices and a lack of charging infrastructure remain. BYD's premium brand, Yangwang, began pre-sales of its first model, the U8, at the Shanghai auto show for $160,000. The U8 has over 1,100 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. RAW Charging announced a deal with the National Trust to install charging stations at various heritage sites in the UK over the next three years, in an estimated £12m rollout. Scania and Northvolt have created an electric battery with a lifetime of 1.5 million kilometers, equivalent to a truck. The battery is produced at the Northvolt Ett gigafactory. Rolls-Royce launched its first all-electric car, the Shining, in China. The vehicle has a top speed of 250 km/h, a range of 585 km, and is priced at $8.

Electric vehicles and smart charging infrastructure are poised to play a major role in providing critical energy services to the grid. Smart EV charging can provide intelligent real-time grid balancing and advanced grid support during times of high demand and limited energy supply. It has demonstrated success by operating EVs as “storage on wheels” during the 12 to 15+ hours per day that vehicles typically sit unused. In 2020, California faced the worst fire season in its history and a record heatwave. Enel X's demand response, energy storage, and smart EV charging customers pitched in as part of a statewide effort among commercial and residential energy users to reduce strain on the grid. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather conditions such as the 2020 California heatwave and 2021's winter storms which brought sub-freezing temperatures and power outages to millions across Texas and the U.S., there is an urgent need to expand demand-side distributed energy resources. Enel X enables industrial, commercial, and residential customers to earn cash flows and enhance resilience by supporting grid reliability through mechanisms such as vehicle-grid integration (VGI), automated load management (ALM), participation in dynamic rates, and V2G for backup-power and resiliency in the future.

We spend most of our time on this show talking about what's happening in climate tech. What technologies, business models, and markets are being developed? By whom? And how much impact will they ultimately have on decarbonization? But there's an equally interesting topic. What isn't happening? In other words, where is the white space? What areas, technologies, or markets need more attention? The mandate of a new non-profit called Actuate is to identify and fill gaps across multiple areas, including climate. They focus on R&D, using a model similar to the US federal government's DARPA or ARPA-e programs. Today, Shayle talks to Actuate's Director of Climate Lara Pierpoint. Prior to actuate she led the Technology Strategy team at Exelon.

The array of AI applications within climate tech is staggering -- and rapidly expanding. There are lots of exciting point solutions, but there's no clear example of AI directly and meaningfully reducing GHG emissions on a global scale. Yet.Last year we had Priya Donti on the show. She's a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon and co-chair of the Climate Change AI organization. This week, she came back with her Climate Change AI colleague Lynn Kaack, a postdoc researcher at ETH-Zurich. Priya and Lynn were co-authors on a blockbuster paper on the topic back in June 2019, called “Tackling climate change with machine learning.”They came back on the show to talk about what has changed since that episode -- both the progress and the bottlenecks in applying AI to climate change. They detail the strengths and weaknesses of AI in climate technology using a few case studies: Optimizing power and heating/cooling systemsInsight into large bodies of data, such as analyzing the physical and transition risk to a company's assetsAccelerating technology innovationThey also discuss the organizational approaches to AI: Do you go vertical or horizontal? That is, do you hire AI practitioners to work within an organization with deep domain experience, such as a utility, or is it more effective to leave those challenges to an organization of AI generalists who work across many fields?Lynn points out there's a third way: spinning up an AI group within an organization. The Interchange is brought to you by Smarter Grid Solutions, a leading enterprise energy management software company. She is an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Nock is creating new models for energy-systems planning that factor in positive social objectives, not just cost or reliability metrics.Any decarbonization strategy is a de facto justice/equity strategy, as frontline communities will see the most benefit. But how do we maximize the benefit? And how do different pathways determine the outcome for low-income citizens and people of color who are disproportionately impacted by pollution? How Cheap and Abundant Can Clean Power Get?

A decarbonized power sector will unlock massive opportunities across nearly every other sector, either via direct electrification or via indirect electrification via the production of low-carbon fuels, like green hydrogen. But here's the rub. Many of the companies that are working on these solutions rely on pretty heroic assumptions around the cost, availability and cleanliness of electricity in order for the economics to work.To put it bluntly, many decarbonization business models hinge on a cell deep in their spreadsheets that has 1- to 3-cent per kilowatt-hour electricity. Is it a realistic assumption? To tackle that question, Shayle turns to his colleague at Energy Impact Partners, Andy Lubershane, the Senior Vice President of Research & Strategy. They survey the technologies that depend on this super cheap, super abundant power, such as EVs, space heating, carbon removal, green hydrogen and industrial heat. Then, they examine the talk of cheap renewables, covering the difference between cheap wholesale and more expensive delivered prices. They break down the variables that make up the difference between wholesale and delivered prices, namely transmission, distribution and capacity factors. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. A mention for interest in EV's increasing because of gas price spikes in some parts of the U.S. and even shortages. It's interesting but a plea to fellow EV owners now is not the time for teasing or being smug. It's unhelpful to those desperate for fuel to live their lives. BIDEN TO VISIT FORD EV FACILITY IN MICHIGAN NEXT TUESDAY"U.S. President Joe Biden plans to visit a Ford Motor (F.N) electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Michigan next week as he makes a push for a $174 billion government boost for electric vehicles and charging stations." reports Reuters https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-visit-ford-ev-facility-michigan-next-tuesday-2021-05-11/ EVE BATTERY DEAL WITH TESLA DENIED"EVE Energy Co., which makes lithium iron phosphate batteries, said a Reuters report that it’s in supply deal talks with Tesla Inc. is “unfounded.” The company didn’t have any business communications with Tesla over the batteries, it said in a statement posted on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange website on Sunday, Bloomberg reported." and reported by Automotive News Europe: "In the initial report, released Friday, Reuters said Tesla was in talks to add the Chinese battery maker to its Shanghai factory supply chain, citing four people familiar with the matter. EVE makes lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are cheaper to produce because they use iron instead of more expensive nickel and cobalt. But LFP batteries generally offer a shorter range on a single charge than the more popular nickel/cobalt alternative. EVE would become the second supplier of LFP batteries to Tesla after China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., or CATL, Reuters reported." https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/eve-denies-battery-supply-deal-tesla FORD FOLLOWS TESLA INTO IN-CAR GAMING"Ford says it is starting to send out in-car gaming with over-the-internet software updates to some of its newer models as the auto giant moves to offer technology to match electric car maker Tesla. For now, the updates are only available to about 100,000 owners of 2021 model year F-150s, Mustang Mach-Es and the upcoming Bronco, but Ford plans to spread the tech across its entire lineup as models are updated. It plans to make 33 million vehicles with the capability by 2028." according to Fox Business: "Ford said there are about 80 different computers in its most sophisticated vehicles that control everything from the infotainment center to brakes and transmission shifts. Already, Ford sent out an update to fix a lighting issue that drained batteries. Among the next updates will be a new version of Amazon Alexa that allows vehicles to communicate with the home assistant without use of a smartphone. Ford also will roll out touchscreen drawing software and simple games for the Mach-E electric SUV. More than 6 million vehicles have the modems and collect vehicle data, but only those with the latest generation of electrical systems can get full over-the-internet updates. " Alex Purdy, director, business operations, enterprise connectivity, Ford Motor Company: "Software updates are common across billions of connected devices but not yet for vehicles. Ford Power-Up software updates will change that by quickly bringing it to millions of people. We’ve invested in more seamless technology so updates can happen while you’re sleeping – making your next ride a better experience." https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/ford-tesla-car-gaming-software-update-amazon-alexa TEXAS WANTS TO CHARGE EV OWNERS $400 IN ANNUAL FEES "The bill being discussed in the Texas state senate—Senate Bill 1728—would raise fees on electric vehicle (EV) owners as a way to make up for the gas tax they're not paying. The legislation would require an annual EV fee of between $190 and $240, an additional fee of over $150 for anyone who drives their EV more than 9000 miles a year, and an annual surcharge of $10 to fund a charging infrastructure advisory council." writes Car & Driver: "The state, which couches the fees in "equalization for road use consumption for alternatively fueled vehicles" terminology, said these fees would apply to approximately 300,000 vehicles and raise around $37.8 million for the State Highway Fund (SHF) in fiscal year 2022, climbing to $135,594,000 in fiscal year 2026. If passed, the bill would take effect on September 1, 2021. Instead of annual EV fees, which don't take actual road usage into account, Plug In America and other EV advocates support what are called road usage charge programs, or ways to charge people for the actual miles they drive each year, often factoring in the weight of the vehicle. Seven states are conducting road usage charge tests with help from the U.S. Department of Transportation." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36442021/texas-electric-car-fee-considered/ ILLINOIS INTERSTATE SIGNS WILL DIRECT DRIVERS TO EV CHARGING STATIONS"Driving down the interstate will get a little easier for Illinois motorists using electric vehicles with new road signs pointing the way to EV charging stations. A Federal Highway Administration program will include seven Illinois interstate corridors in its new blue "Alternative Fuels Corridor" sign program, which will alert motorists to alternative forms of fueling stations, including EV charging stations." reports TheSouthern.com: " The Illinois Department of Transportation is rolling out its own blue sign program, which will place signs on exit ramps that will direct motorists to EV charging stations as well as nearby gas stations, restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions." https://thesouthern.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/illinois-interstate-signs-will-direct-drivers-to-ev-charging-stations/ ITALY FINES GOOGLE FOR EXCLUDING THE ‘JUICEPASS' EV CHARGING APP FROM ANDROID AUTO"Italy's competition regulator has fined U.S. tech giant Google 102 million euros (US$123 million) for excluding an e-mobility app developed by energy company Enel from the U.S. tech giant's open Android platform. The fine was first reported by Reuters." according to FutureCar: "For the past two years, Google has not allowed Enel's JuicePass smartphone app to operate on Google's Android Auto app, which is designed as a simple, less distracting way to use Google's popular apps while driving, such as Maps, Play and Assistant.  Regulators in Italy have accused Google of curtailing use of the JuicePass app and favoring Google Maps, which also includes EV charging station locations for drivers. In a statement announcing the $123 million fine for "abuse of a dominant position", the regulator asked Google to make JuicePass available on Android Auto. JuicePass is owned by Enel's "e-solutions" subsidiary Enel X, which brought the case against Google." https://www.futurecar.com/4616/Italy-Fines-Google-for-Excluding-the-JuicePass-EV-Charging-App-From-Android-Auto UK: VOLKSWAGEN INTRODUCES ENTRY-LEVEL ID.4 WITH 52 KWH BATTERY"Volkswagen has introduced in the UK new entry-level versions of the ID.4 model, equipped with a smaller 52 kWh battery (usable capacity), compared to the initial 77 kWh battery (82 kWh total)." says InsideEVs: "There are two new powertrain versions with that battery: Pure - 109 kW (148 PS)/220 Nm and Pure Performance - 125 kW (170 PS)/310 Nm. Both are available with two new City or Style trim levels. Depending on the version, the WLTP range of the 52 kWh version is 211-213 miles (339-343 km)." "These latest trims fit below the existing ones in the ID.4 line-up, with the City Pure having the additional bonus of being eligible for the Government’s Plug-in Vehicle Grant, thus starting at an eye-catching £32,150 OTR (with PIVG deducted). The City Pure Performance is priced at £36,030, the Style Pure at £38,150 and the Style Pure Performance at £39,530 (all OTR, recommended prices)." https://insideevs.com/news/507153/uk-volkswagen-id4-52-kwh/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles POLESTAR UK OPENS MILTON KEYNES TEST DRIVE HUBPolestar UK has opened a new test drive hub to meet demand.

Portland General Electric (PGE) created their green energy future impact tariff for large scale commercial and industrial customers to help them source 100% renewable energy. The energy will be sourced from new wind and solar facilities dedicated from a PPA through PGE. This huge initiative —  with about 160 megawatts —  was fully subscribed within 3 minutes of its release. It's eye-opening to hear about the opportunity and unmet demand in this space. Join today's guests Brian Faist & Tiffany Menhorn as they talk about this project, why it was so successful, and bumps along the way.   You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in...   Getting to know today's guests Brian & Tiffany [1:49] What is PGE's green energy future impact tariff? [3:04] What kind of hurdles were faced along the way? [6:31] Have you had renewable power conversations in the last 5 years? [9:25] Best practices when going through the solicitation process? [13:19] How might COVID affect the renewables business? [16:46]     Pushing through hurdles to meet customer's needs   PGE's first green tariff was ambitious and is paving the way for others. Tiffany says “I think when I get to work with utilities and corporates, what is most unique to me is that the utility company is constantly stuck in this dynamic — they want to be technologically advanced and they want to move things forward — yet they're so burdened by the state and federal regulatory process.”   One of the big challenges is that not all customers look the same. Some have the ability to staff energy industry experts and work through some of these more nuanced items in renewable procurement. Other customers just want green energy. They don't have time to think about how to accomplish that, but they know they want it. The challenging part is ensuring that you have designed something that incorporates the needs of all of those people.   Haven't had renewable power conversations within the last five years? Ask AGAIN!   One area where utilities have fallen short is in engaging customers with renewable power conversations. If you haven't done that in the past five years, do it again. PGE is not unique in the fact that they are trying to move from a more utility essential service type of organization to a customer-focused organization. They want to do what the customers want. Don't we all? Renewable power is probably at the top of the list right now, just below reliability. So, if you haven't had a conversation about renewable power in the past couple of years with your utility provider, go do it. See what they have available.   There are many programs across the country and more that will come out in the future. Two years ago, the buzzword was “additionality.”  Now it is “100% carbon-free”. It just evolves so fast in terms of what customers want that there will be endless offerings from your utility to help keep up.   How might COVID affect the renewables business?   When COVID first hit it was expected that demand would change but no one was sure of how and what that change would be. Utilities aren't expecting an increase in load demand. In fact,  they are probably looking at significant load reductions as businesses have closed offices and more people are working from home.   The reality is that it hasn't slowed down renewable energy; it's still something that — despite all the issues that COVID presents — will continue. There was a pause as everyone tried to understand the impacts of COVID, but everyone now understands that it will be here for a while. Our lives will be impacted for quite some time but customers still want to advance their sustainability goals.     Connect with our Guests   Tiffany Menhorn with Enel X North America Brain Faist with Portland General Electric      Tiffany Menhorn, Senior Business Development Manager, Wholesale Energy & Renewable Procurement, Enel X North America, LLC Tiffany Menhorn of Enel X works with commercial organizations and utilities to run competitive auctions for a wide range of commodity products.
