EVs are the future… or are they? In this episode, Yamin Vong breaks down the reality of electric vehicles in Malaysia, the roadblocks to adoption, and whether we're really ready for a fully electric future - what's hype, what's practical, and what still needs work. But it's not just about swapping engines. We're talking efficiency, safety, and the environmental impact of EVs, because while they seem like the greener choice, there's more to the story. The tech is evolving fast, but so are the challenges. At the end of the day, the big question is trust. Will consumers embrace EVs, or are we still in the trial-and-error phase? It's a conversation about the realities of electric mobility, the trade-offs we don't always hear about, and what it'll take for Malaysia to truly go electric.   00:00 - The Rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs) 14:14 - Autonomous Driving and the Future of Mobility 32:52 - Safety Concerns and the EV Experiment --- Yamin Vong is a veteran automotive journalist who started his career in 1980 and who's now transitioned to digital platforms including a column in the www.freemalaysiatoday.com and his Facebook page as yamin.com.my and www.malaysiacaroftheyear.my He's a 4x4 enthusiast and his current mission is to promote to Peninsular Malaysians the great outdoors of Borneo Sarawak and Sabah. FREENOW has announced an exclusive incentive with Tesla, offering all FREENOW driver partners up to €5,400 off the list price of a Tesla vehicle. When combined with the eSPSV grant scheme, this can reduce the cost of switching to a new electric taxi by up to €26,590. The appetite for the switch to electric is clear for drivers and passengers alike, with FREENOW welcoming, on average 13 battery Electric Vehicles (EVs) to its fleet weekly. In the first half of 2024, 14% of all FREENOW trips taken were via EVs, with the EV driver fleet growing by almost 11% in this period. In addition, nearly half (44%) of all FREENOW vehicles in Dublin last year were electric and hybrid. This partnership supports the National Transport Authority's (NTA) recently launched Sustainability Strategy, which outlines its commitment to implementing and promoting sustainability practices nationally across the transport sector. As part of the new Strategy, the NTA is aiming for 40% of all taxis in Ireland to be sustainable by 2030. Danny O'Gorman, newly appointed General Manager at FREENOW Ireland, said: "We're excited to announce this new partnership with Tesla, which offers an exclusive incentive that makes driving an EV even more affordable for our driver partners. At FREENOW, we continue to take a considerate and comprehensive approach to sustainability. The National Transport Authority has also set ambitious sustainability goals, which we are committed to supporting as Ireland's No. 1 taxi app. "Every part of the transport ecosystem has a role to play in reducing emissions, and we see the switch to electric taxi fleets as a huge opportunity for rapid, meaningful change. Our partnership with Tesla is another key step in helping our drivers make this important transition." Melanie Naughton, Country Lead at Tesla Ireland, commented: "Creating this opportunity for FREENOW taxi drivers is a significant step in actioning our mission here in Ireland. In two weeks, we have received over 450 requests from drivers across the country, showing a real demand for affordable, high-performance EVs. We look forward to introducing more drivers to our vehicles and further contributing to Ireland's transition to sustainable energy." The offer is available to FREENOW drivers for both the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, two of the best-selling vehicles in Europe in either long-range or rear wheel drive variants. In 2023, the Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in the world. Both vehicles have gained popularity due to their efficient interior spaces, 5-star NCCAP safety ratings and affordable charging rates. Tesla's Supercharger network lets drivers charge their cars quickly, adding up to 241 km of range in just 15 minutes. According to the National Transport Authority, the average taxi driver in Ireland covers 32,600km per year whilst in service. In a petrol vehicle, this would cost approximately €4,500 per year; however, with a Tesla Model Y, the estimated cost drops to just €2,700. In Model 3, the estimated cost goes down to €2,100 per year, and this could decrease further through charging at home with an overnight EV tariff.

Welcome to another "This or That" episode! This short, snappy installment investigates the sustainability of three topics you've asked me about, helping you make informed decisions. Today, it's: Electric Vehicles (EVs) vs. Hybrids, Cotton vs. Bamboo Fabric, and Bamboo vs. Plastic Toothbrushes. In this episode I share:      EVs generally produce 50% fewer emissions over their lifetime compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. How hybrids can offer a more accessible and affordable option. Why, despite the initial carbon footprint from battery manufacturing, EVs outperform hybrids. The types of people hybrids might be a better choice for. Why bamboo is often hailed as a more sustainable option. The main reasons cotton is resource-intensive.   The pros and cons of organic cotton. Why bamboo's sustainability is nuanced and there are negative factors. Why the environmental benefits of bamboo toothbrushes depend on proper composting. The reason plastic toothbrushes with replaceable heads are emerging as a more sustainable option. Life cycle analyses show that plastic toothbrushes with replaceable heads consume less energy and water during production compared to bamboo toothbrushes. Key Quotes "Even if you live somewhere where the grid is primarily fossil fuel powered, EVs come out ahead." "When done responsibly, bamboo fabric can be a sustainable choice, but it is crucial to ensure that the processing methods have been considered." "Plastic toothbrushes with replaceable heads minimise waste, making them the most sustainable option currently available." As a machine tool builder that manufactures high-end machines for the global market, Heller UK is frequently involved in turnkey projects for prestigious OEMs. On a recent project, the Redditch company enlisted the support of the cutting tool experts at Guhring. There has been a wide spectrum of tools used on this project for a leading manufacturer of Electric Vehicles (EVs), including the Guhring tool holders and tool vending technology. As part of the package to accompany the cutting tools, the EV manufacturer has selected a vast range of standard shrink chucks, hydraulic chucks and synchro-tapping chucks. The cutting tools incorporated in this project included a huge range of standard products, all carefully selected and tested to minimise cycle times while achieving tight tolerances. Whilst the standard range of Guhring products accounted for a significant element of the system integration project, it was the bespoke PCD combination tools that demonstrated Guhring UK's expertise as a one-stop solution provider. With the PCD combination tools manufactured at Guhring UK and Guhring Germany, the bespoke solutions were developed to achieve ‘one shot' plunging. The bespoke tooling aimed to reduce cycle times and adhere to the high surface finishes required – and maintain this over the life of the tool. Discussing the project, Guhring UK's National Sales Manager Chris Bush says: “It is a project and industry that is at the very forefront of technology. The end user typically specifies a machine builder and cutting tool supplier - in this instance, it was Heller and Guhring for the cutting tools.” Looking at how the process delivers a solution for the customer, Chris continues: “In Germany, we have a large project engineering team with over 200 employees. So, when we receive a CAD model of the customers' component and the machine capabilities, we can develop the cutting tools and machining strategy from that and create an optimised solution in conjunction with Heller.”   “This requires several meetings to discuss the machining strategies and how we develop the tooling to create a seamless solution from machine tool to cutting tool. At Guhring, we supply everything from toolholder to the cutting-edge and that also entails all the speeds, feeds and cutting strategies in conjunction with the machine builder. Once we supply all the cutting data and tooling sheets, we will then visit Heller and do all the initial run-offs to ensure all the cutting data is optimised and the machining strategy is working well.” Alluding to the overall project, Chris adds: “It has been a great partnership between Guhring and Heller and the current EV project is the biggest project we have collaborated on in the UK.” Discussing the project from a Heller perspective, Tad Forys from Heller Machine Tools UK says: “We delivered 22 machines in this project. That includes eleven 5-axis machines and 11 4-axis machines - all built in the UK. With this project, we have gone from a customer drawing to a fully automated production line. From the initial enquiry with the customer, our engineers here in the UK conducted comprehensive cycle time studies. Following on from that, we developed custom hydraulic fixtures to hold the parts; and we have used these fixtures because it is a high-volume electric vehicle application.” “This recent project that we collaborated on with Guhring has been a perfect demonstration of team work. When we talk about collaboration, it isn't just about working together - it's about aligning our values and expertise. The first two machines for the production line are here at Heller, so we can do the initial production ‘prove off' before the machines land on the customers' shop floor. Guhring has been with us for every step of the journey, clocking in tools, optimising speeds and feeds to make sure we have the most efficient process for the customer before the machines are delivered.” “From a Heller perspective, this project has been an outstanding success. Our end user is very happy. Everything has been delivered on time to a particularly demanding customer - and this has been made possible by a close working partnership with Guhring who have helped us every step of the way,” adds Tad. Discussing the tooling solution further, Guhring's Chris Bush adds: “Even though we are supplying the tools and tool holding for this project, we are also supplying the tool management vending solution. As this is a significant project with a large number of tools, we are supplying the vending machine with some add-on units. The proprietary software that Guhring programs and supplies with this can also be linked to the customer's ERP system. This provides complete synergy and automation for the end user from tool ordering with complete transparency of costing and cost centres by the operation, the individual machine and even by the operator. This system provides unparalleled transparency, so everyone can see the costs and where the costs are going.” “From a Guhring point of view, this project has been a great success and working together with Heller has been a true partnership, and a fantastic example of delivering a proven process to the customer on time,” concludes Chris

Overall, the New York Times is reporting [SEE HERE] that Joe Biden and USTR Katherine Tai are likely to trigger massive tariffs against imported Electric Vehicles (EVs) from China, perhaps as much as 100% due to the low cost of Chinese production.  Additionally, the Biden administration is considering increasing the tariff regime against imports of Chinese steel and aluminum in a bid to protect the American industry. On the EV issue, this tariff approach is politically duplicitous by Biden against the backdrop of massive investment in Mexico by the three largest Chinese EV automakers. Last December the three Chinese auto manufacturers, MG, BYD, and Chery, announced they were going to spend billions building new EV manufacturing plants in Mexico.  Each Chinese auto manufacturer was going to spend between $1.5 to $2.0 billion. Those Mexican built Chinese EV's would pass into the USA market under current USMCA trade rules and regulations, as long as they technically meet the material origination rules.  This can make tariffs against the Chinese imported EVs a moot point, because China will be making them in Mexico (North American trade agreement). One of the reasons President Trump said the U.S. auto industry would suffer a “bloodbath,” is specifically because the current Chinese auto companies are targeting these EV's in the $10,000 or less range.  If you want to see what it looks like when cheap Chinese EV's start to flood a consumer market, visit Russia – the western sanctions have only increased this flow.  I can see it clear as day. This tariff claim by the Biden administration on “import Chinese EV's” is optics only for political benefit.  Whereas the 100% tariffs proposed by Donald Trump specifically target Chinese EV's made in Mexico.   Source: theconservativetreehouse.com Turkey's Central Bank Forecasts Inflation to Hit 75% Peak in May Turkey's central bank finds itself grappling with the country's persistent inflationary turmoil, projecting that the crisis will culminate in May with rates skyrocketing to approximately 75-76%. Hosted by Annik, Lalo, and Andy, the show is a delightful blend of information and light-hearted banter. Main Points The quirky highlight of the episode is the discussion about a curious trade law implemented in France around 2014 that bans the importation of any items related to clown outfits due to a wave of violence linked to people dressed up as clowns. The intriguing part is that the revocation of this law isn't yet established, arousing the curiosity of our hosts and listeners alike. The team digs into the increasing tensions in the automotive industry between unions and manufacturers due to the possible automation introduced by manufacturing Electric Vehicles (EVs). Notably, they point out how the shift towards EVs, encouraged by the same unions, might be creating a job crisis with the decrease of manual labor. Unions now face the challenge of securing employment in an increasingly automated industry. The potential implications of the looming auto strikes in Detroit are discussed extensively. Particularly, they reflect on how such strikes could disrupt supply chains and create a ripple effect on vendors, possibly leading to a slowdown or halting production. The hosts also emphasize the need for businesses to plan for disruptions, ensure timely invoicing, and adapt to the rapidly shifting landscape. The "Simply Trade" podcast generously serves insights with a garnish of humor in this fascinating episode, skillfully threading the lines between legal quirks and pressing industry disruptions like impending auto strikes. By navigating through critical trade scenarios, the team underlines the importance of adaptability in business and awareness of global trends. Enjoy the show. The UK is decarbonising its stock of cars quicker than most people expected – last year there were over a million Electric Vehicles (EVs) on our roads. This is great news for both people and the planet, as EVs are cheaper and cleaner to drive. But this transition presents challenges too – not least to the £32 billion of annual tax revenue collected from vehicles. How can policy makers encourage the switch to EVs in a way that doesn't land the Treasury with a fiscal hole, or low and middle income families with unfair tax bills? Are there tensions between decarbonising and decongesting our roads? And how can we build political support for vital – but contentious – reforms to road taxation? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of highlights from major new research on reforming road taxation, we will hear from leading experts on how to make the taxation of vehicles fit for the UK's net zero transition. Now, the company is already presenting the third version of the sports saloon with the Taycan 4S, says a press release today. The new model is available with two battery sizes. Following the Taycan Turbo S and the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan 4S is therefore the new entry-level model in the series. A single-deck Performance battery with a total capacity of 79.2 kWh comes as standard. The two-deck Performance battery Plus familiar from the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo is optionally available. The total capacity here is 93.4 kWh.   On the UK Porsche configurator the range is from 198 miles to 289 miles for the Performance battery. Price starts at £83,367.   https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2019/products/porsche-taycan-4s-electric-sports-car-entry-level-model-18901.html   Fred at Electrek said: "The smaller battery pack results in a range of 407 km (253 miles), and the bigger one should result in 463 km (288 miles) on a single charge based on the WLTP standard. The Taycan 4S with Performance battery Plus becomes the longest-range version of the Taycan. Both versions of the new Taycan 4S can accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 4 seconds and have a top speed of 250 km/h. Porsche says that the new version will start at $103,800 in the US with the smaller battery pack and $110,000 with the Performance battery Plus."   https://electrek.co/2019/10/14/porsche-taycan-4s-new-entry-level-battery-pack/   evo.co.uk says: "Separating the 4S from its Turbo counterparts are a few subtle design tweaks, ranging from new 19-inch Turbo S Aero wheels, red brake calipers, marginally less aggressive front and rear bumper designs and slightly raised suspension. Six-piston caliper brakes with 360mm discs are fitted at the front, with four-piston, 358mm units at the rear. Porsche’s 4D Chassis Control can also be found, alongside the same three-chamber adaptive air suspension as on the Turbo and Turbo S. Perhaps the biggest draw of the Taycan 4S will be its price. Starting from £83,367, it seems no less than a bargain when stacked up against the Turbo and Turbo S, with £32,491 sitting between it and the Turbo, and a staggering £55,459 with the Turbo S. To receive the potential extra funding, Singulato would have to speed up development of its first model, a fully electric sport-utility vehicle called the iS6, and make proper preparations for an IPO, one of the people said. The company’s investors include Legend Star, Till Capital, Intel Capital, GX capital and other major financial and strategic investors."   https://pandaily.com/singulato-motors-completes-new-round-of-funding-close-to-100-million/   GROUPE PSA REAFFIRMS UK ELECTRIFICATION STRATEGY "Speaking at the Automotive EV Conference (hosted by Three6Zero) held in Coventry on 8 October, UK Head of Electric Vehicles & Connected Services for Groupe PSA, Helen Lees discussed the brand’s electrification strategy, the future of the EV sector in the automotive industry and addressed investment and market potential." says Automotive Purchasing and Supplies: "In just two years, 15 new electrified vehicles will be launched across all brands in the Groupe PSA portfolio. These include a variety of passenger cars that are already available to order, new DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, DS 7 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, all-new Peugeot e-208, 3008 SUV HYBRID4, all-new 508 HYBRID, Vauxhall Corsa-e and Grandland X Hybrid4. These will be joined later in 2020 by all-new Peugeot e-2008 and new Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid, whilst Groupe PSA will also extend its battery electric (BEV) offering on its award-winning LCV product from 2020 starting with the Citroën Relay and Peugeot Boxer."   https://www.automotivepurchasingandsupplychain.com/news/18358/15/Groupe-PSA-reaffirms-UK-electrificaiotn-strategy-at-Automotive-EV-conference   LABOUR PARTY PLEDGES TO BAN SALE OF NON-ELECTRIC CARS BY 2030 "A Labour government will aim to end the sale of cars with internal combustion engines by 2030, as part of its plans to tackle the climate emergency. The party is to begin talks with the car industry and trade unions to explore the policies needed to achieve the goal. It says it wants to help an “under siege” industry switch to electric car production." says The Guardian: "It comes as measures to phase out the internal combustion engine gathering pace across Europe. Earlier this month, Denmark called for a plan to phase out diesel and petrol cars and allow a ban on their sale by 2030. It was backed by 10 other EU countries."   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/13/labour-pledges-to-ban-sale-of-petrol-diesel-cars   WHAT IS MILES PER POUND? From Parkers website: "The Parkers miles per pound (mpp) figure is a new and simple way of comparing the cost to run all cars on sale in the UK today. And it's really simple - using official 'real-world' fuel consumption figures and constantly updated energy and fuel prices, we can show you how far all cars can go for the pound in your pocket. We devised the mpp figure as a way of demystifying the running costs of Electric Vehicles (EVs) because above and beyond their range, and how long they take to charge, there is little uniformity in how carmakers express just how much energy they use. In a nutshell, with this figure you'll be able to directly compare how much any car costs to take on a journey. For EVs that means how much the electricity costs, and for other cars, that'll be how much petrol or diesel you need to pump in at the filling station. This will help potential owners understand the overall running costs of a car in real-world terms that are simple to understand."   TESLA IS THE MOST GOOGLED CAR BRAND IN THE USA Marketing Daily has reported that a new study shows that Tesla is the most Googled car brand by Americans, with more than 2,240,000 searches on a monthly basis. By mid 2025 every major automaker will be producing great Electric Vehicles (EVs) at scale. If batteries become a commodity, how will Tesla stay competitive? We explore a simple thesis that competitive advantage is not about racing to a single point in the future, but about continual innovation. Over the next 10 years battery technology will improve, autonomy will arrive in some form and new business models will emerge. We explore these trends and ask the question, who is best placed to win in this future?

Electric Vehicles (EVs) represent the largest new source of electric load since the air conditioner was invented. They also represent new, flexible sources of distributed energy resources (DERs) that can put power back into the grid. In this episode we delve into these challenges and opportunities with Erika Myers, Director of Research at SEPA, the Smart Electric Power Alliance. Erika authored a recent report titled Utilities and Electric Vehicles: The Case for Managed Charging which serves as the basis for our conversation. We begin by defining the term "managed charging" and continue with a discussion about why SEPA decided to research the issue; what questions Erika had when she began the research, and what findings surprised her. Erika summarizes three pilot programs involving both utilities and OEM manufacturers; shares some of the findings from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD)'s look at the impact of different EV adoption scenarios; and describes some of the complex barriers to achieving real VGI or vehicle-grid integration. We close the conversation with Erika describing her career path that led her to SEPA, and what she predicts the managed charging landscape will look like five or ten years from now.
