Wall Street soars on US-China tariff reprieve

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news mostly about the China-US Geneva 'agreement' and market reactions.First up, China and the US agreed to cut tariffs on each other by -115%. For the US that means they will go down to 30%. For China, down to 10%. Supposedly the deal is for 90 days to allow further negotiations, but it will likely be endlessly extended. Oddly, China was the only major power to impose reciprocal tariffs and this deal seem to make them a clear winner with the US meeting most of China's demands for de-escalation. Other countries who regarded themselves as friends and who have or are still 'negotiating' with the US are now in a much worse position. That includes neighbours Canada and Mexico, Japan, and of course the EU.Separately, India who made a big effort to deal with Trump, is spurned, and they have other security reasons to feel offended (justifiably or not).US merchants will rush to return to China supply. But it isn't clear that China will be doing the same with US products. The US trade deficit with China, already elevated, is likely to surge after this type of 'Trump negotiation success'.The equity markets liked the retreat and Wall Street took off. The USD strengthened, probably in a way the American's don't want. The bond market sees more risks and increased its risk premium. Gold and bitcoin fell sharply. The size of the tariff taxes became clear in April with the release of the US Budget Statement. These taxes cost US importers $16 bln in the month, an increase of +US$9 bln from a year ago, or +$500 mln/day, far lower than the +US$2 bln/day claimed by Trump. Of course they will now fall from here and it seems will never reach the claimed levels so any budget boost to tackle deficits - a clearly stated policy objective - is likely now in the bin.The May report from the USDA shows that grain production worldwide is rising while consumption isn't. So prices are falling especially in the US in response to their trade policies. More will be used there as feed grains. Oddly, this report noted lower production and export opportunities for beef but overlooked mention of what is presumed to be a surge in beef imports. They did say dairy production will be lower and imports higher.Across the Pacific, Chinese vehicle sales came in for April up +9.8% from the same month in 2024. These sales ran at 2.59 mln units an all-time record high for any April. NEVs took a record 47% share in the month. In all this, foreign brands are struggling to get a share, or even keep their share of this expanding market. The UST 10yr yield is at 4.46%, up +8 bps so far today. Wall Street has taken off today on the China tariff news, up +3.1% in Monday trade. The price of gold will start today at US$3223/oz, and down -US$100 from yesterday.Oil prices are up +US$1 today at just over US$62/bbl in the US and the international Brent price is just over US$65/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now at 58.5 USc, down -60 bps from yesterday at this time. Against the Aussie we are down -20 bps at 92.2 AUc. Against the euro we are up +30 bps at 52.8 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just under 67.4 and down -20 bps from this time yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$101,401 and down -2.5% from yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at just on +/- 1.5%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Even for Trump, this is a weird flip-flop

Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news things are turning sour in the trenches of the US economy - for consumers, many non-prime corporate borrowers, and even investors in some local manufacturing they did at the behest of Trump. But first in the week ahead our news will be dominated by the March quarter CPI release on Wednesday. Japan, India and the UK will also release inflation updates this week. The central banks of Canada, the ECB, Turkey and Korea will be re-assessing their monetary policy settings, and obviously they will focused on how the global tariff war by the US will affect them, and the role monetary policy can play to mitigate the coming negative influences.China will report its Q1-2025 GDP result, and Germany will report any changes in economic sentiment. On Wall Street, the Q1-2025 earnings season will kick off and reports from the major financial institutions will come in early. There will be a lot of attention on them, especially if they start to report a bumpy ride from the economic uncertainty. However, the big news over the weekend is that China is standing its ground. Beijing raised tariffs on American imports to 125% on Friday, hitting back against Trump's decision to hike duties on Chinese goods to 145%, and raising the stakes in the trade war. They repeated the "fight to the end" rhetoric, also saying they will "counterattack". "Even if the US continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy. At the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for US goods exported to China."On immediate consequence of all this is that investors are turning away from the US dollar as a safe haven. And perhaps turning away from US Treasuries too.Equity markets seem to be ignoring a sharp change in US consumer sentiment. The University of Michigan survey plunged in April to its lowest level since June 2022 and well below what was anticipated. That's the fourth straight month of pullback, and this survey is now more than 30% lower since the November 2024 election. It is signaling growing worries about trade war developments that have oscillated over the course of the year.American consumers report multiple warning signs that raise the risk of recession: expectations for business conditions, personal finances, incomes, inflation, and labour markets all continued to deteriorate this month. The gauge for current economic conditions fell along with the component measuring expectations which is now at its lowest since May 1980. Meanwhile, year-ahead inflation expectations surged to 6.7%, the highest reading since 1981, from 5% in March. The five-year inflation expectations gauge edged up to 4.4% from 4.1%.To mitigate some of that, Trump cancelled his tariffs as they affect mobile phones, their components, computers and other electronics. Even for Trump, this is pretty odd. It is now very much cheaper to import iPhones and the like from China than make them in the US. There will be many investors, especially those who have started building out US manufacturing facilities at the behest of Trump, who are likely to be a touch unhappy with this flip-flop and they still have to pay 145% tariffs on their imported parts. Clearly Trump has zero idea about how tariffs work, although that is not news. Commerce Secretary Lutnick added confusion in a weekend interview saying the tech tariff cancellation will be temporary.Meanwhile, March producer price inflation in the US actually eased to 2.7% its lowest in five months, aided by a sharp drop in energy costs. Without those fuel cost drops, the index would have risen slightly to 3.3%.There are signs that lending activity is tightening sharply in the US. For two weeks, there have been no - zero - high yield leverage loans for corporates in the US. The funds making these loans are having sharp investor outflows, and banks have become quite risk averse. A credit crunch is underway for most non-prime borrowers. If it extends, there will be real trouble. In Canada, not only are they rejecting American products and travel options now, a new trend is that they are net sellers of US real estate they had as holiday homes.India released February industrial production data over the weekend and that showed growth decelerated sharply to +2.9% from a year ago, down from an upwardly revised +5.2% in January. Markets had expected a +4.0% rise in February, so this is a big miss and is the weakest expansion since August. In China, their March new yuan loans came in at +¥3.6 tln, sharply higher than the +¥1.0 tln in February and slightly more than anticipated. New bank debt support is flowing as they intend, but to be fair it isn't overly different to the usual seasonal pattern. It is even less that the record March new-debt flows in March 2023 of +¥3.89 tln, but it is the second highest March level ever, and +17.8% more than March 2024. Foreign currency lending dived -34% however.China's vehicle sales jumped in March from February to 2.9 mln units, but the near-term change is distorted by the Chinese New Year holiday period. NEVs rose to 1.2 mln of those units, now 42% of all sales. They seem to be on target to sell almost 33 mln vehicles in 2025, almost double the level in the US.Meanwhile, State-linked Chinese funds (the 'home team') stepped in to rescue Chinese stocks last week. But it's an expensive exercise, involving more than ¥7 tln so far and likely to have to go up much more than that. China's own credit crunch is coming at some point, but they can put it off a while yet.Separately, China is also battling unusually cold weather at present with much travel in the north cancelled. In Europe, German CPI inflationcame in at 2.2% in March (2.3% on an EU harmonised basis), slightly lower than in February, and lower than expected. Food prices were up +3.0% and the price of services were up +3.5%. It is also falling energy costs that are keeping a lid on their inflation.Coal and steel prices are falling, with the coal price now down to a level it first achieved in 2016.The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.50%, up +1 bp from this time Saturday. The price of gold will start today at just on US$3236/oz, and up another +US$2 from Saturday, and yet another new record high. That is up +US$217 or +7.1% from this time last week.Oil prices are unchanged from Saturday to be holding at US$61.50/bbl in the US and the international Brent price is now just over US$64.50/bbl. These are the same levels we had a week ago.The Kiwi dollar is now at 58.3 USc, up +10 bps from Saturday at this time and the highest since mid-December. A week ago it was 55.6 USc so a mammoth +270 bps appreciation or +4.7%. Against the Aussie we are up +20 bps at 92.8 AUc. Against the euro we down -10 bps from Saturday at just on 51.3 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today now just over 66.9 and up marginally from Saturday, up +130 bps from a week ago.The bitcoin price starts today at US$84,792 and firming, and up +1.2% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at +/- 1.3%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. What's a little bigger than a bike, a lot smaller than a car, and might be the tool you didn't know you needed to get a big haul home from the grocery store two miles away in the pouring rain? The answer is actually an entire category of vehicles that aren't common on U.S. roads — but with the right mix of policy, code, and infrastructure reform, we could see a lot more of them. Today on the Brake, we sit down with Karina Ricks of CityFi and Benjie De La Peña of the Shared Use Mobility Center to talk about all things mini-mobility, also known as light urban vehicles (LUVs), personal light moblity (PLMs), Neighboorhood Electric vehicles, (NEVs), and about a million other acronyms. Whatever you call them, Ricks and De La Peña recently won a $750,000 federal grant to help American communities encourage their use – only to find out, days later, that the grant might be in jeopardy thanks to President Trump's executive orders.  Listen in to learn more about their project and how you can help keep it alive.

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the week has started tentatively. But there was an eye-catching housing affordability proposal in Spain,But first, there were no real surprises in the latest survey of American inflation expectations. Consumers still see a 3% rate for the year ahead, more for food (+4.0%), less for petrol (+2.0%), but still high for rent (+5.5%). For three years ahead, expectations are for no relief, up from +2.6% to +3.0% per year. But more than expected, Chinese exports surged +10.7% in December from year-ago levels, much more than the market forecasts of +7.3% and accelerating from a +6.7% rise in November. Traders are clearly front-loading orders in anticipation of new aggressive tariffs from the incoming US administration. But Chinese exports to New Zealand were down -1.8% in the month, their imports from us down -7.9%.Chinese imports only rose +1.0%.China's new vehicle sales rose to 3.5 mln units in December, spurred by those taxpayer discounts to encourage spending. They were more than +10% higher in the month than the same month a year earlier. NEVs took a record 45% share of these latest sales. Traditionally, December is their peak sales month of the calendar year.India's CPI inflation rate eased from +5.5% in November to +5.2% in December. Food prices, which account for nearly half on their survey, rose +8.4%. If there is good news among this data it is that prices fell in December from November.Meanwhile, the Indian currency fell to more than 86.7 rupee to the USD. At the start of the year it was 'only' 85.5 so that is -1.4% in two weeks. At the start of 2024 it was at 83 so -4.3% since then. (Still, that is nothing like the -10.4% fall by the NZD against the USD since the start of 2024.)In Australia, the Melbourne Institute's Monthly Inflation Gauge rose by +0.6% in December 2024, sharply accelerating from a +0.2% increase in November and marking the highest level since December 2023. It was also the fourth consecutive month of gain. The ANZ-Indeed Australian Job Ads survey rose by +0.3% in December from November, swinging from a revised -1.8% drop in the prior month. The latest level suggests their labour market is still resilient on a short-term basis despite elevated interest rates. On an annual basis however, job ads dropped -12.5% from December 2023. They have dropped almost -28% from their peak in 2022.In Europe, Spain like many others is facing a housing crisis. They fear a "rich owner / poor tenant" split that is developing elsewhere. Their government has twelve measures proposed to deal with the issue, one of which is a 100% tax on non-EU house buyers. And for the record, the coal price fell further overnight. Oddly, demand is up in China, but so is output - more so - and they have fast-building inventories. The UST 10yr yield is now at just on 4.77%, and up just +1 bp from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today at US$2665/oz and down -US$25 from yesterday.Oil prices are up +US$2 from yesterday at just over US$78.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is now just over US$81.The Kiwi dollar starts today just on 55.5 USc and down -10 bps from this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we are down -20 bps at 90.2 AUc. Against the euro we are up +10 bps at 54.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just over 66.6 and down less than -10 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$92,068 and down -3.0% from this time yesterday. China is planning a fresh set of policies to propel growth in the equipment manufacturing sector, focusing on nurturing new growth engines such as new energy vehicles and low-altitude aircraft, amid the country's concerted efforts to promote industrial upgrading and enhance global supply chain resilience, said officials and experts. The move mirrors the directive to nurture technological innovation to boost the development of new quality productive forces and the establishment of a modern industrial system, which was mapped out at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Monday. The meeting, which was presided over by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, anchored China's key focal points for next year's economic development, as the nation is in a pivotal process of changing its development paradigm from quantity-driven to quality-driven.The vision is backed by China's ever-stronger equipment manufacturing capability, as reflected in the fact that annual production of new energy vehicles passed the milestone of 10 million units on Nov 14, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, making China the only nation to realize such an achievement. It took only six years for this figure to grow from 1 million to 10 million, showcasing the nation's unwavering commitment to innovation-driven development."Innovation stands as a pivotal force propelling the high-quality advancement of the manufacturing sector, and companies are increasingly assuming central roles in driving innovation," said Li Jinghong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University. To date, China has built nearly 10,000 digital workshops and smart factories, of which over 400 have developed into national-level intelligent manufacturing demonstration factories. Artificial intelligence, digital twins and other cutting-edge technologies have been applied in more than 90 percent of these demonstration factories, according to a report released at the 2024 World Internet Conference. In the first 10 months of this year, total output of high-tech manufacturing businesses grew 9.1 percent year-on-year, surpassing the average growth rate of businesses from all industries by 3.3 percentage points, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.Businesses are also stepping up efforts to promote green transformation. NBS data showed that the proportion of nonfossil energy consumption increased 2.6 percentage points in the first three quarters, compared with the same period last year, while coal consumption decreased 1.9 percentage points and petroleum use fell 0.9 percentage point."Despite China's rapid advancement in the manufacturing sector, challenges persist, notably in balancing innovation investments with operational demands," said Li, the CAS academician. "The substantial investments required for technological innovation exert significant operational pressures on companies, posing dilemmas between long-term innovation and short-term financial sustainability."Xin Guobin, vice-minister of industry and information technology, said at a recent conference that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's upcoming policies to further boost manufacturing are expected to strengthen the implementation of large-scale equipment upgrades and trade-in programs for consumer goods to stimulate consumption of major commodities like automobiles.Xin said that policies are also underway to proactively foster new growth drivers such as intelligent connected NEVs, low-altitude aircraft and service robots, as well as major technological projects such as machine tools and smart manufacturing systems."It is crucial to unlock the innovation capabilities of companies and make full use of the leading role of industry front-runners in research investment and the fostering of practical technologies. Further efforts are also expected to enhance the collaboration among businesses, academia and research institutes," Li said.Shan Zenghai, chief engineer and vice-president of the listed arm of construction equipment maker Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, said that promoting the renewal of construction machinery equipment can foster new growth points for related businesses such as electronic components and software development, and further propel the high-quality development of the manufacturing sector. It is expected that policy support for the renewal of construction machinery equipment will be accelerated, while the transformation from traditional fuel-powered construction machinery to equipment powered by new energy sources will be encouraged, the market environment will be continuously optimized, and the coordinated development of the industrial chain will be promoted, he said.Zhang Xiaolun, chairman of China National Machinery Industry Corp, underscored the importance of machine tools as the foundation of the manufacturing sector. Despite China's dominance in global production and consumption of machine tools, a gap exists in high-end manufacturing in this specific sector, compared with international rivals. Efforts are required to foster a robust industrial ecosystem and propel technological progress, Zhang said.

Shoot us a Text.On this Tuesday, we dive into GM's historic EV sales surge in China, explore how AI-powered voice assistants are changing the in-car experience, and look at Starbucks' new CEO's strategy to cut discounts and bring back the coffeehouse charm.Show Notes with links:General Motors has achieved a significant milestone in China, selling more electric and hybrid vehicles than ICE cars for the first time in Q3 2024.Total deliveries in China grew by 14.3% to more than 426K vehicles, across brands like Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and SAIC-GM-Wuling, with over 224K being new energy vehicles (NEVs).The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture led GM's EV success, contributing 328K vehicles, driven by models like the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV and BinguoEV.Buick's GL8 PHEV minivan hit a milestone as China's first premium multi-purpose vehicle to surpass 2 million units in sales, with 45% of its Q3 sales coming from the plug-in hybrid version. In the U.S., GM only delivered 32,000 EVs in Q3.Steve Hill, GM Senior Vice President, remarked: “We are building momentum for both sales volume and market share in China.”Automakers are struggling to keep control of the in-car experience as Apple and Google push their AI-powered voice assistants deeper into vehicles, shaping how drivers interact with their cars.Apple and Google's voice assistants are handling tasks like navigation, calendar access, and smart home control, using vast amounts of customer data to deliver highly personalized experiences.Automakers are losing ground because they don't have access to the same level of consumer data, which tech giants use to make voice interactions smoother and more intuitive. While companies like SoundHound AI offer alternatives, most automakers are outsourcing voice tech, avoiding the challenge of building their own.“Even within the vehicle, you're competing with what's on your mirror link or phone,” said Aakash Arora of Boston Consulting Group. Automakers are "not only competing with other OEMs, you may be competing with your own apps."Under new CEO Brian Niccol, Starbucks is cutting back on its recent discount-heavy strategy, aiming to return to its roots with a focus on premium coffee and customer service.Starbucks had introduced promotions like buy one, get one free and 50% off discounts to boost sales, but the results were underwhelming. The company plans to reduce promotions during the holiday season, instead focusing on seasonal drinks through advertising.Niccol took over as Starbucks CEO in September 2024, following declining sales and customer complaints and aims to restore Starbucks' reputation as a community-focused coffeehouse, with plans to revamp stores for a better customer experience."We have an opportunity to make the store experience better for our partners and, in turn, for our customers," Niccol said.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Experts: Issue exaggerated, should not be politicized专家:问题被夸大,不应政治化China should not be blamed for offering cost-effective new energy technologies and products to the world amid rising accusations of so-called overcapacity concerns, industry experts said on Wednesday.4月10日,电车行业专家表示,现在有人越来越担心中国电车产业出现产能过剩问题,进而对中国加以指责,无视中国为世界带来的高性价比新能源技术和产品,这是不合理的。They made the comments as United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reportedly cautioned that China's overcapacity in electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and solar products will distort global prices.此外,有报道显示美国财政部长珍妮特·耶伦也发出了类似警告:中国电动汽车、锂离子电池和太阳能产品产能过剩将扰乱全球价格。"In conflating overcapacity and the broader issues of the EV market, Washington's narrative is way off the mark. It is the US market's high prices, not Chinese overcapacity, that hinder widespread EV adoption, given that Chinese EVs are completely excluded from the US currently," said Wang Xin, associate professor of China Studies and director of Asian Studies in the department of languages and cultures at Baylor University in the US. Wang said that last year, the EV share of the total US vehicle market was only 7.6 percent, and while US consumers have limited choices with new EVs averaging around $50,000, China's largest EV maker, BYD, offers a subcompact, Seagull, for less than $10,000. In contrast, the US is lagging in realizing even its EV infrastructure ambitions. China has nothing to do with this slow rollout. Unlike the protectionist stance adopted by the US, China's approach prioritizes industry-wide growth rather than narrow corporate and political interests," he added.与中国相比,美国在电动汽车基础设施方面也“落后于人”。这显然不能归咎于中国。与美国的保护主义立场不同,中国永远将行业整体增长摆在首位,而非狭隘的企业利润和政治利益。Zhang Xiang, an auto sector researcher at North China University of Technology, said that the rise of China's new energy industry is fundamentally a result of its ultra-large-scale market, complete industrial system and abundant human resources. "It is not reasonable to leverage political power to hinder the public's access to China's cost-effective new energy technologies and affect the prospects of global green transformation," he said. Zhang added that China's overcapacity problem has been "exaggerated", as industrial overcapacity could happen in any sector in any country, and should not be politicized. "Whether there is overcapacity should be based on global market demand and future development potential, and the market adjusts itself according to the law of value," he added. Bloomberg also said in a recent report that from the rest of the world's perspective, overcapacity can be felt through lower prices, and China's automobile exports, which surged last year as the country overtook Japan as the world's top car exporter, actually became more expensive, which suggested their rising attractiveness isn't due to price cuts. Lu Yan, an industry veteran and independent analyst, pointed out that China is indeed in the process of gradually optimizing the structure of the production capacity of traditional fuel vehicles and increasing the production capacity of new energy vehicles. "Some regions are doing well and some are not doing well enough. But it is a structural and cyclical excess and that is where strategies will need to be adjusted in some regions in the future," Lu said. On the contrary, rising protectionism from Western economies like the US and Europe will not offer a fair competition market for green energy, and may lead to the penetration of NEVs not occurring in an expected way, he added. The EU Commission also announced earlier this week that it will launch an inquiry into alleged Chinese subsidies for suppliers of wind turbines.

"China has gained momentum in NEV-related technologies and products in recent years," he said. Many Chinese NEV companies have taken the lead globally with their technological breakthroughs in the new energy sector, according to Wang. He said that given the country's huge market, "Chinese companies in the new energy sector are expected to have more presence on the global stage in the coming years".他表示,许多中国新能源汽车企业在新能源领域的技术突破已经走在了全球的前面。他表示,鉴于中国巨大的市场,“预计未来几年中国新能源领域的企业将在全球舞台上有更多的存在”。China sold about 6.89 million NEVs last year, an increase of more than 93 percent year-on-year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.中国汽车工业协会的数据显示,去年中国新能源汽车销量约为689万辆,同比增长93%以上。A report released by market consultancy SNE Research last year showed that Chinese companies accounted for six of the top 10 NEV battery makers globally in terms of installation.韩国调研机构SNE Research去年发布的一份报告显示,全球装机量前10名的新能源汽车电池制造商中,中国企业占据了6席。However, Wang Zhile, a former senior researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, said in a note that the ranks of many leading Chinese companies have declined this year, and the gap between their average profit and that of the other Fortune Global 500 companies has widened.不过,商务部国际贸易经济合作研究院研究员王志乐在报告中写道,今年许多中国龙头企业的排名有所下降,平均利润与其他《财富》杂志的差距也很大。世界500强企业规模不断扩大。The average profit of companies from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong on the list is $3.9 billion, lower than the global average of $5.8 billion and US firms' $8 billion.中国内地和香港上榜企业的平均利润为39亿美元,低于全球平均水平58亿美元和美国企业的80亿美元。The COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts around the world have changed the global economy, and the global industrial chain has started to restructure, he said.他表示,新冠肺炎疫情和世界各地的冲突改变了全球经济,全球产业链开始重组。"These external factors have affected the development of Chinese companies to some extent. Big Chinese names still face some challenges in their high-quality development," he added.“这些外部因素在一定程度上影响了中国企业的发展,中国企业高质量发展仍面临一些挑战。”Vehicle英/ˈviːəkl/ 美/ˈviːək(ə)l/n.交通工具,车辆Enterprise英/ˈentəpraɪz/ 美/ˈentərpraɪz/n.企业,事业单位

A batch of major new projects and policies were launched to strengthen the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, as authorities from the region gathered in Hefei, Anhui province for a forum on Tuesday.Participants included senior officials, entrepreneurs and scholars from the city of Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui. As this year marks the fifth anniversary of the region's integrated development becoming a national strategy, the gathering is set to further promote the region's high-quality integration and unleash greater vitality for the Chinese path to modernization. It was announced at the forum that a quantum secure communication backbone network connecting major cities in the region had been completed. The Digital YRD Joint-development Alliance, which aims to promote the region's digital connectivity, was also unveiled. The city and provinces reached an agreement to build the region into a major hub for the national computing power network. With optimized allocation of computing power and high-speed data transmission networks, the region will be endowed with stronger capacity for data processing. The authorities also signed an agreement to jointly develop the two national comprehensive science centers in Hefei, capital of Anhui, and Zhangjiang area of Shanghai. The Yangtze River Delta city cluster has climbed to rank second among all major city clusters in the world in terms of GDP, but its economic efficiency still lags behind many, said Wu Chun, managing director and senior partner at Boston Consulting Group."To strengthen economic efficiency, the YRD region urgently needs to achieve new breakthroughs in synergy mechanisms, especially in fundamental research and application research."Despite having just 4 percent of the country's land area and 17 percent of the nation's population, the region accounts for one-quarter of China's GDP."The YRD region is very strong in science and technology innovation, thus providing an excellent environment for BYD's research and development," Wang Chuanfu, chairman of car manufacturer BYD, said during a keynote speech at the forum.Aware that the region is becoming a globally influential hub for the new energy vehicle industry, Wang said BYD had in recent years built two manufacturing bases for passenger cars, in Hefei of Anhui and Changzhou of Jiangsu, a commercial vehicle base in Huaian of Jiangsu, along with several bases for core parts in more cities in the region.Last year, the region produced 2.79 million NEVs, accounting for over 40 percent of national production, said Wang.Integration英/ˌɪntɪˈɡreɪʃ(ə)n/美/ˌɪntɪˈɡreɪʃ(ə)n/n.结合,融合Modernization英/ˌmɒdənaɪˈzeɪʃ(ə)n/ 美/ˌmɑːdərnəˈzeɪʃ(ə)n/n.现代化

You can be like them by clicking here.  Tesla has started deploying its Supercharger V4, an upgrade to its DC fast-charging stations, with a station spotted under construction in the Netherlands featuring much larger stalls and potentially higher charge rates. The new Supercharger V4 also offers a longer cable, a crucial upgrade for accommodating non-Tesla electric vehicles that have different charge port locations.  Germany's electric vehicle market share has risen to 15.7%, with over one million electric cars now registered. Despite a decline in new plug-in hybrid registrations, the number of electric cars on German roads increased by 63.8% compared to the previous year.  Norway's plugin electric vehicle market continues to expand, with a 90.1% share of all new auto sales in February 2023, driven by the growth of full electric vehicles (BEVs) such as the Tesla Model Y.  Electric vehicle sales reached a record high in Australia in February, with a 6.8% share of new car sales, according to data compiled by vFacts on behalf of the Federated Chamber of Automotive Industries. Tesla dominated the market, accounting for 60% of electric vehicle sales in the month.  Tesla sold 74,402 China-made electric vehicles in February 2023, an increase from the previous year's 4,630 cars. The Model Y was the most popular vehicle, with 39,579 units sold, followed by the Model 3 with 33,120 units sold.  Chinese automaker BYD has reported a 119% increase in sales of its new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2022, selling a total of 589,577 units, due to its continued investment in R&D, partnerships with major tech companies and expansion into global markets. BYD's success in the NEV market is attributed to its commitment to sustainability and expansion into new markets, as demand for environmentally friendly vehicles continues to grow.  Volkswagen Group has announced plans to build a $2 billion assembly plant in South Carolina to manufacture battery-electric pickups and SUVs for its nascent Scout Motors brand. The plant will bring an estimated 4,000 jobs and have an annual capacity of over 200,000.  Rivian will release a new variant of its R1S electric SUV, the 2023 R1S with the Max Pack battery and dual-motor AWD powertrain, with an expected driving range of up to 390 miles and an acceleration time of 3.5 seconds from zero to 60 mph. The upcoming R1S will also be fitted with Rivian's new in-house-designed Enduro drive unit.  Ford is set to triple the production of its electric F-150 Lightning this year, after fixing a battery issue that caused production to pause.  US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited the BlueOval SK Battery Park in Glendale, Kentucky, to highlight the importance of electric vehicle manufacturing jobs in the region. The battery park, a joint venture between Ford Motor and SK On, is expected to create 5,000 new jobs and will be the largest battery park in the world.  Mercedes-Benz has launched a battery recycling program with two Chinese companies, CATL and GEM, to promote sustainable production and disposal of EV batteries. The program will be carried out in China, where CATL and GEM will recycle Mercedes-Benz EV batteries and extract raw materials such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium for reuse in new batteries. The companies aim to create a closed-loop system that will enable up to 95% of the raw materials from used batteries to be recovered and reused.  According to a report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States are being driven farther per trip than ever before, nearly equaling the distance traveled by gasoline-powered vehicles.  Range anxiety is a relic of the past and no longer relevant to today's EVs. Modern EVs offer ranges of 200-300 miles or more on a single charge, which is more than enough for the vast majority of daily driving needs.

Tu and Lei start out this pod with a brief discussion on China's economy and what the govt may do after Chinese New Year (CNY) to stimulate the economy if they see any signs of weakness including re-upping on subsidies for NEVs. They then spend a few minutes reminiscing about their earlier days in China and the wild CNY celebrations that included many fireworks usually in the middle of high traffic'd roads. The conversation moves to speculation about who else may follow Tesla to slash the pricing of their products. Lei takes a few minutes to explain all of the different sales numbers that are being used to describe 2022 China NEV sales since it's a bit confusing to many people. The pod ends with a brief discussion of the growth of exports coming out of China likely to grow significantly into the EU with a big exporter likely to be BYD.

In the past, designing a vehicle required addressing issues such as speed, handling, safety, and efficiency, among others. While this is complicated, it is much easier compared to what it'll take to build autonomous vehicles. Not only do you have to take care of all the vehicle design challenges, but you also have to design its ecosystem. You must consider how it will connect with the infrastructure, its users, and the controller. Effectively combining all of these needs requires the collaboration of engineers from different disciplines. In this episode, the second part of two, Ed Bernardon interviews Felix Andlauer, VP of Mobility Solutions at NEVS – a Swedish electric and autonomous vehicle (AV) manufacturer founded in 2012 with the vision of shaping mobility for a sustainable future. One of the biggest barriers to ride-sharing is the loss of privacy. Most people prefer to ride in a car in silence without feeling like they are being rude. This is one of the biggest benefits of owning a personal car. However, the congestion brought about by people's love for personal cars is simply not sustainable. That's because it significantly increases carbon emissions and degrades the rider's experience.Solving this problem would require an affordable electric mobility service that supports ride-sharing and still offers privacy whenever it's needed. That is exactly what one company is seeking to achieve. In this episode, the first part of two, Ed Bernardon interviews Felix Andlauer, VP of Mobility Solutions at NEVS – a Swedish electric and autonomous vehicle (AV) manufacturer founded in 2012 with the vision of shaping mobility for a sustainable future. Show #1524 Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Thursday 7th July, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. RIVIAN SAYS IT'S ON TRACK TO DELIVER 25,000 VEHICLES THIS YEAR "Rivian said Wednesday the company produced 4,401 electric vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, and delivered 4,467 during the quarter ended June 30. In the first quarter of 2022, Rivian produced 2,553 vehicles and delivered 1,227. That includes a mix of the Rivian R1T pickup truck, R1S SUV and the EDV commercial electric vans it is making for Amazon. The automaker's top priority this summer is ramping up production at its Normal factory by introducing a second shift. It also plans to break ground on a $5 billion facility in Georgia, which awarded the automaker the state's largest-ever incentives package of $1.5 billion." Original Source: https://techcrunch.com/2022/07/06/rivian-says-its-on-track-to-deliver-25000-vehicles-this-year/ US: FORD EV SALES INCREASED 77% IN JUNE "Ford's all-electric vehicle sales increased quickly. In June, the company sold 4,353 BEVs, which is 77% more than a year ago and 3.0% of the total volume.  The number includes 1,837 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickups and 1,957 Ford Mustang Mach-E. We estimated that Ford E-Transit sales stand at 559 (based on the cumulative number and previous reports). According to Ford, going into July, both F-150 Lightning and Mach-E dealer stock is higher than in June, which heralds stronger July sales ahead.  Noteworthy is also that over 70% of BEV sales are customers coming from other competitor brands. In the second quarter of 2022, Ford sold 15,527 all-electric vehicles (up 144% year-over-year), while so far this year sales almost reached 23,000 (up 77%)." Its Model Y and Model 3 were the best-selling electric vehicles in June in several countries. The more sales data we get, the more we learn about the success of the manufacturer's vehicles. It was recently revealed that Model Y became the best-selling car in Norway in June, where EVs took 78.7% of the market share. In addition, the vehicle became the best-selling electric car in Sweden. However, sales figures for all cars in the country, not just EVs, are now available, and Model Y's success appears to be far greater than only in the EV market." Later this year, Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to use Tesla Superchargers,” wrote the Biden-Harris Administration. "The pilot program would open the Supercharger Network with over 35,000 Superchargers worldwide to non-Tesla vehicles in the United States. The plant is undergoing an upgrade to boost its output, which requires it to suspend most production in the first two weeks of July, according to a separate internal memo seen by Reuters. The factory's goal is to eventually produce 22,000 cars per week, the memo said." By the end of June 2022, China had 310 million vehicles, of which 10.1 million were NEVs, according to data released today by China's Ministry of Public Security. Of the 10.1 million NEVs, 8.1 million are pure electric vehicles, accounting for 80.93 percent of the total number of NEVs.In the first half of this year, a record 2.21 million NEVs were registered in China, the data show.  This is an increase of 1.11 million vehicles, or 100.26 percent, compared to the first half of last year. The share of NEVs among all new registrations was 19.90 percent, meaning one in five car buyers bought a NEV, according to the data." Original Source: https://cnevpost.com/2022/07/06/chinas-nev-ownership-exceeds-10-million-units/ NIO 500 KW FAST CHARGERS COMING TO CHINA AND THE EU THIS YEAR "During NIO's second annual Power Day event, the Chinese EV automaker spoke of its future of charging and battery technology, unveiling new 500 kW ultra-fast-charging piles in addition to a peek at its third-generation battery swap station. Here's a quick recap of NIO Power Day 2022. The 500 kW fast chargers have peak currents of 650 amps – easily some of the most impressive power in the current industry and a clear response to competitors in China. In August of 2021, GAC Aion launched a 480 kW fast charger, which would have been more impressive if the company hadn't originally promised a 600 kW charger. Just last week, chairman and CEO of fellow EV automaker XPeng He Xiaopeng said the company would be gradually rolling out its own 480 kW/800V charging network later this year to support high-voltage charging on its upcoming G9 SUV." What the company described to Green Car Reports is an order deposit, not a pre-order deposit. This is not an extra $5,000 refundable deposit, it explained, but an actual down payment on the vehicle. It's the beginning of a vehicle purchase process that will involve specific lenders and finance details soon. Fisker aims to deliver the Ocean One to the U.S., Canada, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, all from November 2022 on, with the UK and France getting the launch version later next year." The electric crossovers have an updated exterior, in addition to rumored powertrain changes. The standard E-Tron and Sportback appear to have the same front-end styling. The revised grille has an intersecting hexagonal mesh pattern, versus the current look with a mix of vertical elements and narrow slats. A rumor from last year claims that the refreshed E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback have a new battery that increases their range. They'll allegedly be able to cover 373 miles (600 kilometers) on a charge in the WLTP standard. The EPA ratings currently are 222 miles for the E-Tron and 218 miles for the Sportback." The goal is for Norway to be an attractive host country for sustainable and profitable activity throughout the battery value chain, as well as attracting the large giga factories. During the press conference Vestre held at the battery factory Freyr in Mo i Rana, Northern Norway, he announced that Freyr's board has approved the construction of the giga factory at Mo.  Freyr's investment decision for Giga Arctic (formerly Giga Factory 1 and 2) is NOK 17 billion. The government will provide 4 billion NOK in the form of loans and guarantees for the giant factory." Additionally, consideration should be given to access for EV chargers “during times of emergency such as evacuation from natural disasters,” as stated in the proposed rule. Argonne National Laboratory, a research center of the U.S. Department of Energy, issued a report this spring on using mapping tools to prioritize EV charger benefits in underserved communities. The report says that analyzing sea level rise data, as well as flood and fire risk data, can help determine “where to deploy EV infrastructure, where to allocate resources, and which populations are most at risk" Original Source: https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/urban-flooding-presents-challenges-for-electric-vehicle-charging-stations/626567/ FRIDGE UNIT WILL OPERATE FROM ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY "FRANCE: Carrier Transicold is to unveil Pulsor eCool, a refrigeration unit operating directly from the high voltage DC current generated by the batteries powering an electric light commercial vehicle.  Carrier Transicold's original Pulsor system, released in 2012, was the first LCV unit to harness the electrification potential of the company's E-Drive technology. In a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, the legacy system requires a generator to run on electric power.   Carrier says the new solution will deliver enhanced sustainability to customers choosing to operate a modern, electric urban delivery fleet." Ford starts customer deliveries of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck - Ford announced that it started production of the electric pickup truck last month, and they have since made their way to dealerships across the US. Some were delivered to fleet customers, but now we learned that the automaker started deliveries to its retail customers as well.  - Ford quickly accumulated 200,000 reservations for the electric pickup and realized that the demand was much higher than anticipated. The company quickly ramped up its production and is now planning for an annual production rate of 150,000 units by the end of next year. This year, production is expected to be limited to about 40,000 units. - While this is not much compared to overall F-150 production, it is good to jump-start electric pickup trucks in the US. Next year, the Silverado Electric, Tesla Cybertruck, and more are expected to contribute to the electric pickup truck revolution in the US Original Source : Ford starts customer deliveries of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck - Electrek Tesla delivers Megapacks to new Bitcoin mining facility - Tesla has delivered four Megapacks to a giant new Bitcoin mining facility in Texas that is going to be the first to be powered by the automaker's solar and batteries. - Last month, the project was announced as a partnership between Tesla, Blockstream, and Jack Dorsey's Blocks (formerly Square). - The idea is to build a new 30 Petahashes per second open-source Bitcoin mining facility powered by a 3.8 MW solar farm and 12 MWh Megapack system provided by Tesla. - Tesla's involvement in the project is also interesting within the context of the company adopting the cryptocurrency in its own business. - Early in 2021, Tesla invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. Shortly after, the automaker started accepting the cryptocurrency as payment on new vehicles. Top speed is 100km/h. Original Source : "Tally ho!" CVT eliminates the need for manual shifting between gears, with gear changes happening seamlessly as needed, ensuring riders never find themselves in the wrong gear halfway up a hill. - The cheapest of the four bikes – the $US3,450 ($A4,900) Formula E Team e-bike – boasts 80Nm of torque, 25% more than a standard e-bike. - All the bikes come with a carbon belt drive that is said to be maintenance free for 32,000 kilometres and a digital dashboard integrated into the handlebar – including speedometer, battery indicator, range – a security system with a password activated security immobiliser, and even mobile phone charging.
