[Intro: 11:50] David Nickles — Managing Editor of Psymposia, underground researcher, and harm reduction advocate — joins me to discuss the ongoing commodification, medicalization, and corporatization of psychedelics and the intersections between the far right, conspirituality, and psychedelia.  Psychedelics have gone mainstream. With major corporate interests now pushing for the legalization and commodification of psychedelic compounds in the US and abroad, David, along with his colleagues at Psymposia, have been critiquing the various claims these well-funded groups have been making in their effort to profit off the normalization and broader public acceptance of these controlled substances. In this interview, I ask him to elaborate on the various issues he has raised in his work, including the various forms of misinformation that have been presented to the public about the efficacy of psychedelic therapy in treating metal health disorders, particularly within the broader socioeconomic context we currently live under. Also, we discuss the intersections between psychedelia and the far right, using the Capitol siege as a jumping off point into this subject. David’s work focuses on the social and cultural implications of psychoactive substances, utilizing critical theory and structural analysis to examine the intersections of drugs and society. He is a vocal opponent of the mainstreaming and commodification of psychedelic compounds and rituals, believing that such approaches inherently obscure the liberatory potential of psychedelic experiences. Decriminalization, medicalization, and legalization are advancing, but the socioeconomic context, the setting, in which the psychedelic renaissance unfolds, is capitalism. The climate has been irrevocably destabilized and right-wing extremism has risen. There is certainly room for change. Yet there have long been vague implications that wider psychedelic use will somehow inspire progressive values, universal siblinghood, and an ecotopia of overlong, platonic hugs. Psychedelics are chemicals carrying a lot of cultural baggage, but there is something freeing, powerful–even dangerous–in embracing the understanding that there is nothing inherent or essential to their character. In any case, evidence mounts indicating that the full spectrum of right-wing ideology, from outright Nazism to conservative-leaning centrism, is demonstrably hospitable to psychedelics–not uniquely endangered by them.” (http://bit.ly/39xvSVn) Brian A. Noah Derksen is a Canadian singer-songwriter with a wonderfully soulful folk-roots Americana sound and some very strong songs. Also an American citizen, Noah Derksen's new album "America, Dreaming" - which was produced by Murray Pulver (The Bros. Landreth, Joey Landreth, Doc Walker, etc.) in Winnipeg, is a search for identity, reflecting on time spent living and travelling across the United States. "As an American-citizen growing up in Canada, I held an unrealistic depiction of the United States as a land of opportunity and freedom. In years spent living, touring, and working south of the border, I’ve discovered the practical limitations to that opportunity and freedom. America, Dreaming represents an observation of my home and native land south of the 49th parallel; an observation both externally, of how things change with time, and internally, on how I have had to shift my own perspective." Noah Derksen joined us in the studio to chat about the new album, and while he was with us played three songs from the new album live. For more information, visit https://www.noahderksen.com. Ken Dunn is a modern day traveling troubadour giving social and environmental issues a voice in song, while reminding us to keep our loved ones and peace at the forefront of this precious life. Ken's eighth album, "Live in LA" was recorded at an impromptu gig at Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood with proceeds going towards LA Family Housing support for those struggling with homelessness in the greater Los Angeles area. The songs on the album reflect on homelessness, peace, and social challenges as well as love - all things desperately needed in today's world. The song "Tahlequah" tells the story of a mother orca who carried the lifeless body of her young for two weeks before finally releasing the baby to the deep. According to Ken the song reminds us that not only human beings have precious lives, but our planet and all its inhabitants need to be protected and loved. There are now only 75 resident orcas in the Salish Sea near Ken in British Columbia. Ken Dunn joined us in the Folk Roots Radio studio to chat about "Live in LA", and played three songs live for us. Encore release November 15, 2018. Encore release August 8, 2017. Atheist author and activist Avijit Roy was hacked to death by religious hardliners in his native Bangladesh. His wife was gravely injured and lost a finger, but is expected to recover. It's small consolation, but his death has lead to widespread outrage in Bangladesh. Plus: Three young Muslims (and, by all accounts, model citizens) were gunned down by their neighbor in Chapel Hill, NC, ostensibly over a parking dispute. Did the fact that the neighbor was a self-described atheist who railed against religion on Facebook make this a hate crime? Baseball Bat of Doubt: A father new to atheism struggles with his family's involvement in Boy Scouts. Finally, we mourn the passing of Leonard Nimoy. He did indeed live long and prosper.
