Sad farewells to indigenous Canadian cellist / songwriter Cris Derksen, who was killed in an automobile accident last week, and to Colombia's principal musical matriarch Totó La Momposina. The singer and bandleader died this week aged 85. She was one of my perennial favourites. I first saw her at the Edmonton Folk festival over 3 decades ago where she and her band were extremely memorable! New releases from La famille LeBlanc (NB), Celtic Colours Festival Live (both 2024 and 2025 were released this year), young Scottish fiddler Ryan Young, Mali's Fatoumata Diawara, and Dervish. Plus features on Mary Gauthier (performing June 10th at the QE Playhouse) and Canadian prairie songwriter Cara Luft, who performs this evening at The Rogue, and has a superb new CD - and a new band.

Our lead story: the sudden passing of 45-year-old cellist Cris Derksen in a two vehicle collision in Alberta has many mourning the loss of the Juno-nominated composer and performer.
The gospel message we hear today is often a confusing one. How often is sin preached? What about the need for genuine repentance? Or the judgment that awaits the Christ rejecter? Do we hear much about the sound Biblical doctrines behind the gospel message? We desperately need to get back to what the Bible actually says. This week's broadcast looks at the writings of the Apostle Paul in the book of Romans as he discusses one of the essential elements of the scriptural gospel message.- sin and how God deals with it.
Discover how indie developer Dani Devesa Derksen-Staats created RetroRapid, an accessible retro racing game, and Xarra, a flexible reading and listening app. Learn how thoughtful design, multiple input methods, and community feedback can shape more inclusive experiences across Apple devices. Shaun Preece talks to Dani Devesa Derksen-Staats, an indie developer based in London, about his transition from working at the BBC to building accessibility-focused apps in his spare time. His latest projects highlight how inclusive design can be applied across both gaming and productivity tools. RetroRapid is a retro LCD-style racing game available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Originally a side project, it evolved into a fully released title following feedback at the ARCtic conference. The game was designed with accessibility in mind, supporting multiple input methods including taps, swipes, keyboards, game controllers, and the Apple Watch Digital Crown. Dani explains how audio cues—assigning musical notes to each lane—help players build a mental map of the road, alongside haptic feedback and direct touch controls. Community feedback from AppleVis also played a key role in refining the experience. Dani also introduces Xarra, a newly launched app designed to support reading and focus. It allows users to import text, PDFs, and web content, combining audio playback with synchronised on-screen highlighting at line or word level. Built with accessibility at its core, Xarra supports VoiceOver, Switch Control, Full Keyboard Access, and Voice Control, while preserving image descriptions in audio. It also uses Apple Intelligence and Foundation Models to convert code blocks into natural language when listening to technical content.

In this episode, we examine the 1984 murder of 13-year-old Candace Derksen in Winnipeg. Candace vanished on her way home from school in November of that year. Weeks later, her body was discovered in a storage shed, bound and left in the cold.We trace the investigation, the arrest and trial, and the acquittal that continues to shape how this case is remembered. Along the way, we look at how the murder impacted the Derksen family, the Winnipeg community, and the broader conversation around evidence, justice, and accountability.Episode Update (January 2026):In January 2026, Mark Edward Grant — who was acquitted in Candace Derksen's murder — appeared briefly in a Vancouver courtroom facing new charges that are unrelated to Candace Derksen's case. The charges include unlawful confinement, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats. Grant has consented to remain in custody while a bail plan is discussed. Details of the matter are currently under a publication ban, and he is subject to a no-contact order with the alleged victim.--Music Composed by: Sayer Roberts - https://soundcloud.com/user-135673977 // shorturl.at/mFPZ0Subscribe to TNTC+ on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/TNTCJoin our Patreon: www.patreon.com/tntcpodMerch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/true-north-true-crime?ref_id=24376Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tntcpod/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/tntcpod Hosted on Acast.
Viele Christen würden sagen: »Ich glaube an Jesus.
In diesem Video spricht Dr. Martin P. Grünholz mit Prof. Heinrich Derksen u.a.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ja hoor, daar is 'ie weer.
We can become so familiar with the Christmas story that we lose the awesome wonder of that day! And so many people miss the message completely - a message brought to us from heaven by angels no less! Tremendous news of a Saviour given “unto US”! Why would God even do this for sinners who hated and rejected Him? And who still do! Well, the only reason is in God's great heart of love for sinners like us. Yes, this gospel message of good will to mankind came from the lips of angels. We would do well to give it our utmost attention, don't you think?
It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of the Word of God when it comes to the salvation of the soul. It is only by depending on the authority of the Bible that sinners can firmly secure their faith as sure as an anchor holds fast to a giant rock. But not only do we need this firm foundation of our faith - we need to hear it for ourselves. We need to hear God speaking to us THROUGH His Word. It is the Word of God that is able to save the soul. "Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life!" the hymn writer could say. Have you trusted them?

On today's episode, we are getting off the sidewalk and more into the skyline. Dallas Derksen serves with Mission Aviation Fellowship at Prairie Aviation Training Centre in Three Hills, Alberta.A critical shortfall of new pilots, highlighted by Statistics Canada and global aviation authorities, threatens to ground as many as half of all available flights in Canada within the next decade.
Today's message explains the truths of the gospel very simply using just 4 words, and they each begin with the letter “L”. The first one is "lost" - making the uncomfortable discovery that you don't know where you are or where you are going. The truth is, you are actually ‘lost' long before you make that realization! This is what God is trying to get us to acknowledge. The gospel message includes three more of these "L's" - “left”, “loosed”, and the best one of all – “Lord”!

There are many calls that we hear from God's word. Have you ever heard them? In today's broadcast, the first call we hear is from the prodigal son – a famine and voice from the earth, Luke 15. And then, at a great banquet in Luke 14 - a feast and a voice from heaven. And lastly, from the lost sinner – a flame and a voice from hell - the words of the Lord Jesus Christ from Luke 16. And what about God's wonderful invitation to you? Have you heard that call?
The Bible is filled with the theme of the precious blood of Christ. It is pictured in the Old Testament and seen with clarity in the New. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sin. It's why Christ came - to pay the price for sin on our behalf. Have you accepted the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus, His death upon the cross as payment for YOUR sin? That is what it means to be a Christian. Trust Him today.

Isaiah, one of the major prophets, spoke extensively about things to come before they actually happened! And this included many details about the Saviour – His characteristics and His ministry here on earth. Some have referred to his writings as “The Gospel according to Isaiah” and they are certainly right! If you've never read Isaiah, Chapter 53, we'd urge you to. It starts with a compelling and personal question - WHO has believed the report? Have you?

Well, life has often been described as a journey, hasn't it? Whether long or short, we just do not know. Along the pathway there are many intersections that we cross – intersections that affect our lives in definite ways. In today's broadcast, speaker Marvin Derksen brings us the gospel message with a focus on DIVINE intersections in our lives. How marvellous that God should ever choose to intersect our earth, our history, our own personal lives! But He has! By the giving of His Son, God has provided a way for me and you to be brought back into a personal relationship with Him. Let's listen as Mr. Derksen explains each of these vital intersections for us and through them presents to us the good news of the gospel.
VOICES FOR MADIDI, 24min., Canada Directed by Jonathan Derksen Bolivia's Madidi National Park is considered to be the most biodiverse place on planet earth. The Uchupiamonas people, who call the park home, are in a constant battle against forces eager to exploit the protected area for its hydroelectric potential, hardwoods and gold. In this documentary, we hear from of the eco-warriors at the front lines. https://www.instagram.com/jonathanderksen/ Get to know the filmmaker: The Madidi area of the Bolivian Amazon is perhaps the most biodiverse place on earth. I first visited the area in 1982 as a teenager, when a group of friends and I ventured down the Beni River in a motorized dugout canoe during the rainy season, only to almost meet our fate in deadly rapids, whirl pools and a maze of giant tree snags. Fortunately, we were taken in by some Moseten hunters, who fed us and gave us shelter until the rains abated and we could carry on. I returned to the area in the nineties as a photojournalist on a national parks beat, then, in 2007 as an expedition leader. In 2008, I filmed with National Geographic on Bolivia's infamous “Death Road” traversing the Andes to the Amazon. In 2016 and 2017, I worked on a coffee table book “Madidi: an uncertain future” with photographer Sergio Ballivian. On each expedition, I interacted with the extraordinary Uchupiamonas people, who taught me the ways of the jungle and the profound importance of protecting such unparalleled biodiversity. They also educated me about the various existential threats to the region and its indigenous people. This lit a fire under me. In 2023, I returned with a film crew in hopes of bringing their story to the rest of the world, culminating in “Voices for Madidi”, a bilingual expression of the eco-warriors serving the front lives of a little-publicized battle. Finalist works range from intimate functional objects to large-scale ephemeral installations. The concerns of the exhibited works are also diverse, embodying the natural world and the origins of clay, the intimate connection between Māori and whenua, the freedom of working with clay, and the precise technicalities of sculpting, firing, and glazing. Beth caught up with ceramicist Peter Derksen about his practice and the exhibition.
