Would you believe that the state legislature writes the state budget every two years without using a spreadsheet? We couldn't believe it either. That's why MacIver did it for them. But, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Bill and Mike explain exactly how the state assembles its budget, and why everything about it is wrong. At the end of the day, the state knows exactly where it gets its money from, but it only has a vague idea of where it goes… Bill and Mike also share the 400-year history of American tax uprisings, and why Americans don't share their ancestors' sense of outrage over out-of-control government. All that and more on this episode of the MacIver Report.

The CFO software ecosystem is highly fragmented and ripe for disruption. Sean Jacobsohn, partner at Norwest, has a front-row seat to the action: He's backed 10 companies selling to CFOs, while Norwest has invested in 20. Having identified 300 companies in 15 different categories operating in the space, he joins CJ to share takeaways from his market map of the evolving CFO software stack. They dig into what's driving disruption, how new players are challenging legacy systems, and what it takes for founders to stand out. The conversation spans everything from the staying power of spreadsheets to the debate between building for verticals versus horizontals, the future of FP&A, and how AI agents might reshape the stack. Sean delves into the dynamics of partnerships, outlining five key rules for successful collaborations. Additionally, he talks about his Failure Museum which showcases a collection of items representing failed products and companies, and breaks down what he has identified as the six forces of failure.—LINKS:Sean Jacobsohn on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seanjacobsohnNorwest: https://www.nvp.comMarket Map: Reimagining the CFO Software Stack: https://www.nvp.com/blog/market-map-reimagining-cfo-software-stackFailure Museum: https://failure.museum/CJ on X (@cjgustafson222): https://x.com/cjgustafson222Mostly metrics: http://mostlymetrics.comRELATED EPISODES:CFO of FloQast on Why Finance Teams are Data Curators: The $7 Million Wake-Up Call: Mastering Rebates for Profitability with Enable's Nick Rose: G2 CFO Chad Gold on Building A Durable Career as a Venture Backed Exec: —TIMESTAMPS:(00:00) Preview and Intro(02:04) Sponsor – Rippling Spend | Pulley | Navan(06:08) The Fragmentation of the CFO Tool Ecosystem(07:24) Advice for Founders on Deep Domain Expertise(10:39) Enable: Disrupting an Existing Solution Versus Creating a New Category(12:32) The Prevalence of Spreadsheets in the Current Ecosystem(13:39) Solutions Built for Verticals Versus Horizontals(16:24) Sponsor – NetSuite | Planful | Tabs(20:22) Vertical Software and the Move to the Cloud(22:17) The Likelihood of Consolidation by Incumbents in the Space(24:53) Developments in the FP&A Space(26:55) The Future of AI Agents in Finance(28:05) The Five Key Rules of Partnerships: Partner Fit(29:17) Entering New Markets(30:16) Enablement: The Importance of Training(32:28) Reciprocation(33:49) How Often the Little Guy Approaches the Big Guy in Partnerships(34:51) M&A in Partnerships(37:01) The Best Way To Form a Partnership(37:45) The Inspiration Behind the Failure Museum(39:14) The Six Forces of Failure(40:38) Falling out of Product-Market Fit(41:25 Examples of Failures From the Failure Museum(44:58) How the Failure Museum Informs Sean's Work at Norwest(46:12) The Magic of Pivoting—SPONSORS:Rippling Spend is a spend management software that gives you complete visibility and automated policy controls across every type of spend, saving you time and money. One of the challenges of the 4% Rule is what your initial safe withdrawal rate should be. While the name of the rule suggests one should start with 4%, there are countless reasons why that start point may not be right for you. For example, you may retiree early, you may not use the same asset allocation the rule was based on, you may have concerns about future stock market returns, inflation or both.Enter withdrawal strategies that don't require you to use 4% or any other initial safe withdrawal rate. In this video we'll look at three such strategies:1. Variable Withdrawal Percentage2. Spend Safely in Retirement Strategy3. Send us a textThe shed industry stands at a pivotal moment where traditional operations meet modern technology challenges. In this insightful conversation with Tristan from Customer Aligned Logistics, we dive deep into how their CAL system is revolutionizing order management for shed and steel building businesses.Having evolved from a farm delivery company to a specialized shed industry solution provider, Tristan brings a unique perspective on combining practical business know-how with technological innovation. What truly stands out is CAL's completely rebuilt interface designed specifically for shed businesses – creating a clean, streamlined experience that eliminates unnecessary complications and focuses only on what matters. The heart of our discussion centers around CAL's three distinct product tiers (Transaction Hub, CAL Central, and CAL Complete), each tailored to different business needs rather than revenue brackets. This approach fundamentally changes how shed businesses can adopt technology, allowing them to start small with essential tools and scale up as needed. For steel building dealers in particular, the Transaction Hub solves a specific pain point by simplifying the process of moving from configurator designs to contracts.Perhaps most valuable for industry veterans is our candid conversation about succession planning. Many shed business owners approaching retirement age need to consider how their operations will transfer to the next generation or potential buyers. Implementing the right systems today creates tangible business value that extends beyond current ownership.Whether you're looking to modernize your operations, improve your sales process, or prepare your business for future transitions, this episode offers practical insights from someone who truly understands the unique challenges of the shed industry. This is a transcript of my opening talk at EA Global: London 2025. In my talk, I challenge the misconception that EA is populated by “cold, uncaring, spreadsheet-obsessed robots” and explain how EA principles serve as tools for putting compassion into practice, translating our feelings about the world's problems into effective action. Key points: Most people involved in EA are here because of their feelings, not despite them. Many of us are driven by emotions like anger about neglected global health needs, sadness about animal suffering, or fear about AI risks. What distinguishes us as a community isn't that we don't feel; it's that we don't stop at feeling — we act. Two examples: When USAID cuts threatened critical health programs, GiveWell mobilized $24 million in emergency funding within weeks. People from the EA ecosystem spotted AI risks years ahead of the mainstream and pioneered funding for the field [...] --- First published: June 13th, 2025 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/eT823dqNAhdRXBYvb/from-feelings-to-action-spreadsheets-as-an-act-of-compassion --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. We're joined by a panel of experts in this special episode exploring the intricacies of energy-efficient development financing: Stephen Arrivello of PACE Equity is here to explain the benefits and applications of C-PACE financing, and explore how it compares to traditional funding sources. Our own Bill Harbeson joins the conversation, weighing in on how C-PACE complements incentives like Cost Segregation, 179D, and the ITC/CEIC. Brad Molotsky of Duane Morris moderates this fascinating discussion, painting a picture of what's possible for the savvy investor — C-PACE on the front end AND tax incentives on the back end, to maximize benefit.

The Get Paid Podcast: The Stark Reality of Entrepreneurship and Being Your Own Boss
Do you know if your business can afford your next investment or are you hoping it all works itself out? Today, Steph Crowder and I break down how to create a financial safety net in your business using nothing more than a spreadsheet. This is how you can relax a bit more and know you're making pretty smart, grounded investment decisions. (No buyer's remorse afterwards!) This is how Steph went from “there's no way I can afford that!” to realize she was more than fine (even in a worst-case scenario). This Week on the Get Paid Podcast: The exact spreadsheet Steph used to project revenue and expenses (without overcomplicating it) How she realized she was running a $450K/year business…with almost no profit What happened when we cut her projected launch revenue in half and she was still OK Why projecting income + expenses is more regulating than just having 6 months of savings What to include in your projections (especially if you still have a job or multiple revenue streams) The mindset shifts from “can I afford this?” to “what needs to be true to make this work?” Mentioned in this podcast: Gusto (payroll software) Claire's spreadsheet template (coming soon—DM me if you want early access!) Now it's time to GET PAID Thanks for tuning into the Get Paid Podcast! If you enjoyed today's episode, head over to Apple Podcasts to subscribe, rate, and leave your honest review.
