I feel like we have been two years away from fully autonomous vehicles for the last five years. It gets difficult to differentiate between what's accurate and what's fiction. To try to get at the truth, I spoke to Avijit Sinha, the newly appointed President of Wind River for this week's Embedded Executive podcast. We get into the hardware, the software, and the standards. Note that Avijit was promoted just after we recorded this podcast!
Avijit Ghosh is a Research Data Scientist at AdeptID and a Lecturer in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. He's a good friend of mine and was an element of my PhD cohort at Northeastern. He's also a well-respected researcher at the intersection of machine learning, ethics, and policy. You can read about some of his innovative and cross-disciplinary work, for example, in the New York Times. David Widder is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Digital Life Initiative at Cornell Tech, and earned his PhD from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. If you know me personally, you might remember David because he and I were simultaneously involved in parallel antics to fight non-consensual workplace sensors at CMU and NEU, respectively. Another funny coincidence is that David and I attended the same international boarding school program, called United World College. But most importantly -- David is a first-class researcher in the space of AI ethics. Fabio Tollon is a South African philosopher of technology, currently completing a post-doc at the University of Edinburgh. Coincidentally, he taught a philosophy of science class that my fiancé took as an undergrad! Fabio's research focuses on developing a robust meta-ethical grounding in our approach to the ethics of AI. Without rigorous conceptual apparatus, Fabio argues (and we concur) that we will be lost in our ethical analysis of these emergent and ubiquitous artificial systems. TODAY, we hosted a wonderful panel discussion on AI ethics, with the above three panelists, and moderated by the long-time Boston Computation Club member, mathematician, and data-scientist Wei Sun. This was extremely informative, a lot of fun, and wildly interdisciplinary. Wei guided the discussion in a number of interesting discussions, and then the panelists fielded questions form the audience at the end. We didn't have enough time to answer everyone's questions but listeners are highly encouraged to email the panelists for follow-up :) . I'd like to thank all the panelists and Wei again for showing up and making this event the special moment in time that it was, and the diverse and highly engaged audience for participating in this project. This was a lot of fun and highly intellectually stimulating, and I hope we can do more events like this in the future.

Listen to Manjula Narayan discuss with Avijit Ghosh, author, 'When Ardh Satya Met Himmatwala' about the 1980s in Hindi cinema, it was the decade of the dark and powerful police drama Ardh Satya. It was the decade of the kitschy excess of the action comedy Himmatwala. It was a decade of opposites. It was a time of furious change beyond the silver screen, video cassettes brought cinema to drawing rooms and bedrooms; television and one-day cricket emerged as fierce competition to films; piracy put movie theatres in crisis; film stars were elected to the Indian Parliament in surprising numbers.

On this podcast, we discussed some of his work, specifically with regards to where we see the nature of his line of inquiry as a filmmaker. For instance, we spoke to Mukul about his film “Electric Shadows”, which explores a film festival in China where Indian films were screened; and reflects deeply on the impact of cinema on these two cultures, on the act of documentary film-making and the politics of history and memory. For Andy and I, and of course to those of you that are interested in architecture and cities, in the film, ‘Nostalgia for the Future', Mukul's commentary on Indian Modernism and especially the nation-building narratives of the time bring into focus the culture of conception within architecture and urban design in the country. In this inaugural episode of Rise Up, Bengaluru!, RJ Divya speaks with Avijit Michael, executive director of Jhatkaa.org. They discuss how one can actively participate in democratic processes. While working as a techie in Bengaluru, Avijit realised that he is not the one to be in a corporate set-up and quit his job to look for other opportunities. He started working with non-profit organisations and the gap that he saw there concerned the need for effective technology. So he set out to fill this gap with the knowledge he possessed. What drives him is the need to make more and more citizens involved in the democratic process and holding governments accountable. If you want to be part of this movement, then give a missed call to 89712229111.
In this episode, we have talked about digital marketing from an expert's point of view.

We review major news of the week: The pope blaming Satan instead of the church for child abusers within its ranks; oral arguments in the Bladensburg cross case before the Supreme Court; the 4th anniversary of the murder of atheist author Avijit Roy by Islamist terrorists, and the Trump Administration’s new assault against Planned Parenthood. Cheryl Kolbe, director of FFRF’s Portland chapter, joins us to talk about how she just persuaded Portland’s city council to give nonbelievers protected status. Then “Why I Am Not a Muslim” author Ibn Warraq tells us more about atheism and freethought in the Muslim world and why millions are leaving Islam.
We have a victory to report in Colorado and a victory to defend in Florida. After hearing 19th-century Robert G. Ingersoll's 1897 "Thanksgiving Sermon,” the 21st-century comedian Leighann Lord gives us "Six things to argue about at Thanksgiving other than politics." Then we talk with the first winner of FFRF's new "Avijit Roy Courage Award," Rasel Ahmed, co-editor of Bangladesh's first and only LGBTQ magazine who had to leave the country to seek asylum in the United States because of threats to his life.
Encore release November 15, 2018. Encore release August 8, 2017. Atheist author and activist Avijit Roy was hacked to death by religious hardliners in his native Bangladesh. His wife was gravely injured and lost a finger, but is expected to recover. It's small consolation, but his death has lead to widespread outrage in Bangladesh. Plus: Three young Muslims (and, by all accounts, model citizens) were gunned down by their neighbor in Chapel Hill, NC, ostensibly over a parking dispute. Did the fact that the neighbor was a self-described atheist who railed against religion on Facebook make this a hate crime? Baseball Bat of Doubt: A father new to atheism struggles with his family's involvement in Boy Scouts. Finally, we mourn the passing of Leonard Nimoy. He did indeed live long and prosper.
“Let Bangladesh revoke the citizenship of these enemies of Islam! If not, we will hunt them down in whatever part of God’s world we find them and kill them right there!” These words appeared on a kill list of about twenty secular bloggers in Bangladesh, published by the Islamic terrorist group Ansarullah Bangla Team. One of the names on the list was Raihan Abir, who joins us on this episode of Secular Jihadists. Raihan's friend and colleague, Avijit Roy, with whom he co-authored their book Philosophy of Disbelief, was hacked to death by Islamic fundamentalists with machetes in early 2015. Also hacked to death the same year were Washiqur Rahman, Niloy Neel, Ananta Bijoy Das, Faisal Dipan (Raihan's publisher), and several others. "I knew it was my turn," Raihan said chillingly at the time. And he was right. After escaping several threats to his life, this brilliant young editor of Mukto-Mona, a Bengali/English blog on freethinking and science co-founded by Avijit and his wife Bonya, eventually found refuge by moving his family to Canada. In 2016, Raihan Abir won the PEN Canada/Ken Filkow Prize for showing extraordinary courage in opposing restraint on freedom of expression and ideas. This is an incredible story from a real free speech hero. Don't miss this.
