We meet author/art critic Jennifer Higgie and Sotheby's Chloe Stead to discuss an inspiring new exhibition which has just opened ‘London: An Artistic Crossroads' runs until 5th July at Sotheby's New Bond Street.Sotheby's, in partnership with Art UK and twelve museums across the country, are staging a month-long exhibition, open to the public and free of charge, shining a spotlight on the UK as a centre of creative cross-pollination.The exhibition, ‘London: An Artistic Crossroads', brings together an assemblage of remarkable works by artists who passed through or settled in the UK during their lifetime. The earliest of the works is a vivacious portrait by Flemish artist Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger, who became one of the most sought-after portraitists in England during the 16th century. It is joined by a vibrant landscape by André Derain, for whom London was a place of explosive transformation, as well as an iconicComposition by Piet Mondrian who, out of fear of German invasion and encouraged by Ben Nicholson, left Paris for Hampstead in 1938. Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Dame Lucie Rie are included in the line up, all émigrés, Freud from metropolitan Germany, Bacon from rural Ireland and Rie from Vienna, in addition to Frank Bowling, R.B. Kitaj and Dame Magdalene Odundo, among others. The exhibition coincides with NG200 - the Bicentenary celebrations of London's National Gallery - which it is intended to complement. As the National Gallery launches its National Treasures programme, where 12 of the nation's most iconic and well-loved paintings from the collection are lent to 12 venues across the UK, this exhibition does the reverse: bringing 12 works from major regional collections together in the capital city. The National Gallery has long provided a source of inspiration for creatives, who look to its rich collection to further enhance their own practices. Many of the artists presented in Sotheby's exhibition publicly acknowledged the museum's influence over their own styles and practice, including Bacon, Freud (the subject of a landmark National Gallery exhibition – ‘New Perspectives' – in 2022/23), Kitaj (who selected paintings for ‘The Artist's Eye' exhibition at the National Gallery in 1980), Bowling and Auerbach, who was even invited to show his interpretations of some of the National Gallery's paintings in 1995.Jennifer Higgie is an Australian writer. Previously the editor of Frieze magazine, and the presenter of Bow Down, a podcast about women in art history, she is the author of a 2021 book on women's self-portraits, 'The Mirror & The Palette: Rebellion, Revolution & Resistance, 500 Years of Women's Self Portraits'. Her latest book 'The Other Side: Women, Art and the Spirit World', was published in 2023. Jennifer has been a judge of the Paul Hamlyn Award, the Turner Prize and the John Moore's Painting Prize.Chloe Stead is Global Head of Private Sales, Old Masters Paintings for Sotheby's. She actively works with collectors, institutions, and dealers in buying and selling works of art internationally.Follow @Jennifer_Higgie and to learn more about the exhibition visit: @Sothebys‘London: An Artistic Crossroads' is open now and runs until 5th July at Sotheby's New Bond Street.Learn more: https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/twelve-artistic-treasures-meet-in-london Hosted on Acast.

Muys Snijders is a powerhouse in the art world, but what makes her even more special is her deep intentions for honoring the artists and making art so accessible to everyone. In our discussion, we pull back the curtain on the art world's past, present and future. I am incredibly passionate about this topic. I've always been an artist at heart and struggled with many of the artist's current dilemmas. I graduated from the College of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University yet despite coming out of one of the top art schools I found it terribly challenging to enter into and make a living in the art world. I was encouraged to be pragmatic and look into commercial areas which ultimately landed me in the advertising industry. I've thought a lot about what the underlying reasons are for receiving advice that moved me away from my passion. I recognize how much we undervalue the arts in our current times and believe that connecting to the arts offers an opportunity to connect with much deeper parts of ourselves and our society. We'll get into this and much more shortly covering innovation, diversity, patronage as well as emerging technology in the arts. Muys is a seasoned executive and visionary leader with over 25 years of international experience working in the art world. She launched her own art consultancy firm and served as the Managing Director of Christie's Americas. Muys has a deep knowledge of the market for Post War & Contemporary Art having led the division for Bonhams in New York and prior to that, she was the Global Director of Client Strategy and Private Sales for this department at Christie's. Muys holds an MA in Art History and Classical Archaeology from Leiden University in the Netherlands, as well as an MA in Arts Management from Greenwich University and an MA in Art Market Appraisal from Kingston University in the UK. Muys is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Leadership Program for China from Harvard Business School, Tsinghua University in Beijing, and CEIBS in Shanghai and most recently obtained a Certificate in Alternative Investments from Harvard Business School. She is multilingual and has worked in London, Amsterdam as well as New York. But don't be intimidated as we know how the art space can often feel. Muys is as approachable and inspiring as she is experienced.

Cuban actress, writer and fitness expert Bevin Bru is lighting up television screens across the nation on CW’s hit series “Batwoman” as Angelique Martin, Batwoman’s ex-girlfriend. Now in its 2nd season airing on Sundays at 8/7c, and just recently renewed for another season as reported by Deadline. Born and raised in Miami, FL, Bevin fell in love with being on stage and acting at the age of 8 years old when she started doing community plays. From that point on, she had one goal, and that was to make it to New York City and Los Angeles when she was of age to pursue her dreams of making it in the entertainment business. Surrounded by love from her siblings and her two moms, Bevin was always supported in pursuing her dreams. At the age of 18, Bevin moved from Miami to NYC to attend AMDA to further her education. When she first arrived in Los Angeles, Bevin took on many odd jobs to make ends meet before teaching fitness classes in Santa Monica, which she still does from time to time when she isn’t filming. From there Bevin began going out for auditions and booking commercials before landing her role as “Camille” in the horror film HEAD COUNT. Bevin is also known for her roles in series and films such as “Don’t Look Deeper, METRO, and “Private Sales.” When Bevin isn’t in front of the camera, she can be found working out on her Pelaton, lifting weights, teaching fitness classes through IGTV, taking spin classes, or practicing Qigong exercises. Bevin is also an active member of the LGBTQIA+ community having gay parents, a gay brother and being bi-sexual herself, the community and representation of said community has always been a big part of her life. Closing and launchpad series (for now) is something a little different dealing with private sales. Many people (including me until a couple-of-months ago) think that private sales are only open to VCs, whales, and individuals connected to the project. Not so. In this episode we discuss how everybody could participate in private sales via CSP DAO and similar projects. After doing some research, I decided to use Koinly for my taxes. With much of the world focused on bitcoin and ether as prices breach new all-time high after all-time high, the “Money Reimagined” crew embarks on a more nuanced journey, one that eschews world-changing networks for an art-changing renaissance that's been long in the making. We're talking, of course, about the nonfungible token (NFT) movement that has engulfed the world of crypto collectibles. With big brands like Christie's auction house and the National Basketball Association getting involved and some tokens already selling for six-figure sums, the question isn't if NFTs will force a very old industry to adopt some very new practices, it's when.On today's episode of CoinDesk's “Money Reimagined,” Michael Casey and Sheila Warren are joined by Nanne Dekking, CEO of Artory and formerly the top salesman at Sotheby's.Founded in 2016, Artory is creating the first standardized data collection solution by the art world, for the art world. In his former position at Sotheby's New York, Dekking was vice chairman and the worldwide head of Private Sales. His close relationships with collectors and museums were integral to the continued growth of private sales at Sotheby's. Prior to joining Sotheby's, Nanne was vice president of Wildenstein & Co. He advised individuals, museums and foundations on the formation and development of their collections. From 1996-2001 Nanne was the founder and principal of Nanne Dekking Fine Arts, an art consultancy firm and gallery in New York."Which scholar do I trust? Who in the art market do I trust?" Dekking said. "They don't want to trust anyone."In this wide-ranging introduction to NFTs, collectibles and the traditional art market, the discussion ranges from Sheila Warren's Cryptokitty genealogy to the challenges of selling paintings by the old masters in litigious modern markets, plus a whole lot more.“There are so many charitable things you can do with all this technology but ultimately you want the market to understand the commercial benefits of it. Then it goes fast. The moment you're in the realm of charity, it's like ‘this is such a nice idea' but in a way you're dead in the water already if the market just thinks this is only nice for a charitable reason," said Nanne Dekking, CEO of Artory and formerly the top salesman at Sotheby's. "As long as the market believes opaqueness will help [its] business model, which it doesn't any more, it's a very old-fashioned idea… The moment Art-Net came up, the moment Google existed … it's all about this crazy idea that you as a human being are so important in the sales process to an artwork. I mean, you're not." When someone tells me they took two of their slowest sales months and turned them into their BEST sales months … my ears perk up big time! That's exactly what Molly Goodall has done by using Brilliant Product Launches in her business, Little Goodall. Now...in Molly's case they're called Private Sales, and she uses Private Sales to: 1.) Build up a list of targeted email subscribers who are interested in her products. Molly says she grows her email list by thousands of people (usually a 30% list size increase) when she's promoting access to her Private Sale! 2.) Generate excitement around her Private Sale event, which lasts for a limited time, and includes deals on her products that her audience can't get at any other time. 3.) Sell like crazy during the live sale period (her version of a product launch), because her audience is primed and ready to buy, and she's created a brilliant offer that doesn't last long. My favorite part about Molly's Private Sales? She's not creating all sorts of new products in order to generate these incredible numbers. She's taking items she already has and making the most of them. Absolutely brilliant!
This week we have John Wallischek from used car dealership Autolinks joining us to discuss the differences between purchasing a used car from a dealership as opposed to a private seller. We talk about the consumer protections put in place that help protect consumers when shopping through dealerships. We also talk about which option may save you more money and the basic pros and cons of each. We also share our thoughts on the new vehicle test drive fo the week, the 2018 Mercedes E400 4MATIC Cabriolet.
