Virginia Citizens Defense League head Philip Van Cleave is warning gun owners not to get complacent ahead of this year's elections, which have the potential to put Democrats in a position to enact sweeping gun bans, restrictions on public carry, and more.
Next, in our 8:30 half hour, we hear from the Virginia Citizens Defense League's Philip Van Cleave -- who talks to John about last week's 8-1 Supreme Court ruling (with Clarence Thomas dissenting) that upheld barring domestic violence suspects from possessing guns. What Philip tells John is that the ruling wasn't as broad as purported and may have actually been a strike against so-called "reg flag" policies.

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #170 Jill McDaniel Mom At Arms, The DC Project Jill McDaniel is someone I've been following for awhile. Since she's a DC Project gal, I already knew that she may be up for being on the show. I had a course scheduled in Virginia and I reached out to her to see how far she was from the class. Lynchburg, VA wasn't too far so we set up a time and date to film a show. Growing up in rural southern Virginia, she's always been around firearms. Her father was a police officer and worked about a half hour from their home. He instilled in his family that they were going to learn to shoot and handle firearms since worked that far away. She learned on a BB gun and rifle before she started on handguns. In 2016 with the Clinton/Trump election is when she started to get active on social media and paying attention to the politics of firearms and Rights. This was the first time she saw and heard gun control ads and Moms Demand Action (MDA). She took to Twitter, where she usually crap-talks about sports, and found Shannon Watts. She discovered Watts was lying and she wanted to get involved to stop the lies. That's when she started blogging and wanted to challenge what the MDA were putting out there. So she purchased the Mom At Arms domain name. She asked for contributors to the website. She's got about 10-15 people that write for the site when they're able to. The objective of the site is to find out and get the word out about what is going on across the country. Most of her writers are female and are DV survivors, crime victims, or self defense oriented people. The success of the site has become bigger than she thought it would be. Mom At Arms does have informants and moles! There are some writers who ‘sneak' into MDA meetings and pretend to be a ‘red shirt' just to find out what they're up to. These ‘spies' do get booted out of meetings if they get discovered. Jill herself has been kicked off a zoom when a red shirt did some research into her. Already friends with Mary Callison (#050), Rebecca Schmoe (#158), and their group One Million Moms Against Gun Control, Jill was learning about the DCP. There was a VA director, but she needed to step down. Dianna Muller (RSWC #059 & #164) asked Jill to be the VA director. With her experience as an instructor, running her own blog, and fighting with Watts, she was more than ready. Through the DCP, she also works with the Virginia Citizens Defense League in being a cheerleader, promoter, and supporter. Jill is also a USCCA certified instructor and really enjoys teaching situational awareness courses. Paying attention to your surroundings is really the basis for staying out of gun fights and bad situations. Having several of the DCP ladies on the show, I've really come to have a lot of respect for the group and for the ladies individually. They're all doing many things at the state and national level. Jill isn't any different. She's got the Mom At Arms website and all it's social media. She's doing things in VA. And she's been blocked by Shannon Watts! Which is a cool badge to wear. You'll find all of her socials down below! Favorite quotes: “...when you speak about guns, we've instilled at birth.” “I learned how to shoot with a BB gun and a deck of cards.” “It's become something bigger than I thought it would ever be.” “We knew the 2A sanctuary stuff was about to take flight, and we wanted to make it concrete in some way.” “We focus on the Rights, we focus on the Constitution.” Mom At Arms Website https://www.mom-at-arms.com/ Mom At Arms/USCCA https://training.usconcealedcarry.com/instructor/7aae0872-7ac7-11eb-a776-02420a0001fb Mom At Arms Facebook https://www.facebook.com/momatarms Mom At Arms Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mom_at_arms/ Mom At Arms Twitter https://twitter.com/mom_at_arms The DC Project https://www.dcproject.info/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Sharing some commentary and seeking your thoughts on what I said. Sharing what it takes to get started as a gun owner in Maryland and giving kudos to the Virginia Citizens Defense League, VCDL.org for leading as a gun rights organization. https://vcdl.org/mpage/VCDLLegUpd012723 The state of Maryland isn't quite up to the level of New York or California when it comes to gun control, but it ain't for lack of trying. Maryland has tons of gun control laws on the books, and none of them have made Baltimore any safer, but that won't stop them from doing more. https://mdsp.maryland.gov/Organization/Pages/CriminalInvestigationBureau/LicensingDivision/Firearms/HandgunQualificationLicense.aspx Thanks for sharing, Shalom Baby, Rev. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #138 John Crump Black Swan Media John Crump is one of those content creators that is just about everywhere. Our paths must have crossed somewhere. Regardless, John was up for being on the show when I made a trip to Virginia. He says he does his shows from his mother's basement. She was nice enough to offer me some cookies and milk. John, often known as Crump, or even Crumpy, has lots of things going on. He tells us that he grew up in a house full of Democrats and he was the only Constitutionalist in the family. So he's been consistent throughout. Once he gets into something, he's ALL in. When he got into firearms, he ended up starting one gun store and buying another just to have the inventory. He submitted something to Ammoland and it was published. The next week, he sent another article to them and that was published. Then a third the next week. Eventually, Ammoland just said John should write for them. He's got his hand in some other content, too. He's got a daily YouTube channel, John Crump Live. There's a variety of guests and topics, covering just about anything that is firearm or freedom related. Then there's John Crump News. Like the title says, it's where he puts out news of what's going on. He's also helping other content creators, too. Folks like DLD After Dark, Flying Rich, Trench Work Chronicles, Shooting Gallery New England (RSWC #106), and 2A EDU. Plus he creates t-shirts and patches. All of this is under the Black Swan Media brand. There's a story behind Black Swan Media that he shares with us. One of the things that keeps John going is being an insomniac and not sleeping much. John also tells us a bit about buying firearms in Virginia. He also talks about his connection to Gun Owners of America (GOA) and their involvement with Virginia Citizens Defense League. I was a little surprised that an 18 year old can buy a handgun and carry it openly. Much of northern Virginia is ‘occupied territory' and the rest of Virginia is ‘free America' as I often call regions like these. With all of the interviews he's done, he did a compilation of sorts. He took some transcripts of the best interviews and turned it into a book called Speaking With Giants. Some of the interviewees are RSWC passengers! Stephen Willeford (#088), Anthony Colandro (#003 & 025), Sarah Joy Albrecht (#092), Rhonda Ezell (#037), Michael Sodini (# 067). But there's others, too. Willes Lee, Maj Toure, Tim Kennedy, and more. The proceeds from the book went to help John's sick niece. The proceeds still get donated. John also gets into telling us about his favorite guest, Tony Simon (#041). He said the conversation went from “Karens” to how we got to socialism and it only took 4 hours! John had some great quotes, which you'll find below. I really enjoyed him talking about learning about yourself when you interview someone. And how the interviewee also learns something about themselves when they're guests on a show. I learn something from all of my passengers and I think its a good thing about taking folks Riding Shotgun. Favorite quotes: “I believe we should live within the Constitution and everything else is infringement.” “When I go to sleep, I'm writing in my head. So when I wake up, I have an article usually pre-written in my head.” “You learn a little bit about yourself when you talk to someone.” “Life isn't easy because it's not meant to be easy. Anything that's worth something is hard.” Timestamp 00:00 Intro 01:20 John Crump 01:45 Beginnings 02:21 Constitutionalist & growing up 05:03 Engineering of firearms 06:19 VA info & GOA 09:35 Buying gun stores 10:18 Journalism & writing 12:08 Black Swan Media 15:53 Internet traffic 16:41 T shirts 18:50 Staying on top of things 25:14 Speaking with Giants book 29:49 Favorite Guests 34:04 GOA/VCDL Connection 39:40 Europe 41:58 Wrap up Black Swan Media on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Johncrumplive John Crump News YouTube https://www.youtube.com/johncrumpnews John Crump Live YouTube https://www.youtube.com/johncrumplive Ammoland-John Crump https://www.ammoland.com/author/johncrump/ Crumpy Website http://crumpy.com/ Speaking With Giants https://www.amazon.com/Speaking-Giants-Interviews-John-Crump/dp/B08CP9DJL6 Gun Owners of America https://www.gunowners.org/ Virginia Citizens Defense League https://vcdl.org/ Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/ Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. She is a member of the DC Project and Virginia Citizens Defense League, and Tara believes that Second Amendment rights are for everyone and encourages everyone to advocate for the right to bear arms. 1) Walk us through your journey from passively supporting the Second Amendment to actively advocating for it. 2) Your videos are clever and effective. The Hard Knock Life video, regarding obstacles facing new gun owners, was particularly powerful. Was there a specific moment that caused you to make that one? 3) Everyone has a day-one at learning something. Why does it seem so difficult to promote acceptance and education without shaming our newcomers? 4) This might be a newsflash to some people, but with gun ownership on the rise, it is more obvious than ever that is no “typical” gun owner. Talk to us about that. 5) You have stated that you won't “lose your guns in a boating accident” – what does this phrase mean?

Former U.S. District Judge John Gleeson said in a filing Wednesday the government "has engaged in highly irregular conduct to benefit a political ally of the President" and argued that Flynn had committed perjury. - Court-appointed attorney says judge should block DOJ move to drop Flynn case John Gleeson, the attorney and retired judge who was appointed by Judge Emmet Sullivan to submit a brief discussing whether federal prosecutors should be able to dismiss their case against Michael Flynn, insisted in a filing Wednesday that not only does Sullivan have the authority to reject the government’s request but he should do so. The Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure state that prosecutors may dismiss a case “with leave of court.” At issue in the Flynn case now is exactly what level of discretion this gives the court. Gleeson argues that it covers the current situation, claiming that federal prosecutors gave a pretext for why they want to drop the case. “Leave of court should not be granted when the explanations the Government puts forth are not credible as the real reasons for its dismissal of a criminal charge,” Gleeson wrote in his amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief, alleging that prosecutors’ reasoning is “riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact” and should not justify dismissal. “[T]he rule empowers courts to protect the integrity of their own proceedings from prosecutors who undertake corrupt, politically motivated dismissals. That is what has happened here. The Government has engaged in highly irregular conduct to benefit a political ally of the President.” Attorney General Bill Barr disputes this. In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, he claimed that Sullivan was encroaching on the Justice Department’s authority. “The argument is that it's always been understood that decisions whether to pursue an individual through the prosecution process or holding them criminally accountable is vested in the executive branch and not the courts,” Barr said. “And he is essentially, in our view, trying to set himself up as an alternative prosecutor.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/counsel-appointed-by-flynn-judge-says-court-should-block-doj-move-to-drop-charges 5-E -- MERRIAM WEBSTER CHANGING DEFINITION OF RACISM: US dictionary Merriam-Webster to change its definition of racism American dictionary Merriam-Webster will change its definition of the word racism at the suggestion of a young Black woman who wanted it to better reflect the oppression of people of colour. Kennedy Mitchum, a recent graduate of Drake University in Iowa, contacted Merriam-Webster, which has published its dictionaries since 1847, to propose updating the term. "I basically told them that they need to include that there's a systematic oppression upon a group of people," she told the local CBS affiliate KMOV. "It's not just, 'Oh, I don't like someone.'" Merriam-Webster's editorial manager, Peter Sokolowski, confirmed to AFP that the definition would be modified after Mitchum's request. 6-A -- TRUMP AGAINST CHANGING NAMES OF CONFEDERATE NAMED BASES: *President Trump says he is ruling out changing the name of Army bases named for Confederate Army officers. Kayleigh McEnany Turns Base Renaming Question Around On The Biden Welcome Center (VIDEO) McEnany brought up the movie “Gone With The Wind,” no longer available on HBO, and asked if George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison should be “erased from history” because of their views. “What about FDR, because of internment camps?” she asked. “Should he be erased from history, or Lyndon Johnson, who has a history of documented racist statements." Then, the White House press secretary took aim at Biden: “Finally, what about people that are alleged by the media to be segregationists?” said McEnany. “NBC tells us Joe Biden didn’t just compromise with segregationists, he fought for their causes in schools, experts say. CNN tells us letters from Joe Biden reveal how he sought support of segregationists in the fight against busing. Washington Post tells us that Biden’s tough talk on 1970 schools’ desegregation plans could get him new scrutiny. And there are several more where that came from. So I’ll leave you with a question. Following HBO Cancellation, ‘Gone With The Wind’ Is The #1 Best-Selling Movie On Amazon HBO Max pulled “Gone with the Wind,” the 1939 film that’s been called “the biggest blockbuster in American history,” from its library of streaming films. It quickly shot to the top of the list of best-selling movies and TV shows on Amazon. Other editions of the film also made the top-ten list on Amazon Wednesday, ranking #8 and #9. It’s also at the top of the “Romance” category on Amazon. The movie won 10 Academy Awards, one of which was earned by Hattie McDaniel, making her the first African-American to be nominated for and win an Oscar. UPDATE: ‘Gone With the Wind’ will eventually return to HBO with a denouncement of its racist depictions. An HBO Max spokesperson says “Gone With the Wind” will eventually return to the platform with a discussion about its historical context and a denouncement of its racist depictions. On Tuesday, HBO Max removed the 1939 film from its library in the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd. “’Gone With The Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible,” an HBO Max spokesperson told Variety. “These depictions are certainly counter to WarnerMedia’s values, so when we return the film to HBO Max, it will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions, but will be presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.” 6-E -- COROANVIRUS AND SEX: Journalist JOSH BARRO: NYC Health advice discourages casual sex during COVID, but also says if you’re going to have it: “Be creative with sexual positions and physical barriers, like walls, that allow sexual contact while preventing close face to face contact.” ROBBY SOAVE: NYC's Official Guide to Pandemic Sex Is Awkward but Accurate. The health department correctly recognizes that abstinence doesn't work, and kissing is riskier than sex. Coronavirus dictates from public health officials and government bureaucrats have been confusing, contradictory, and arbitrary for months now. As compliance with aggressive social distancing begins to slip, officials must pivot toward offering scientifically sound advice about what kinds of activities carry risk, rather than doubling down on impractical and wide-ranging lockdowns. Thankfully, New York City's recently published guidance on "safer sex and COVID-19" is a remarkably sober—and, yes, awkwardly descriptive—piece of realistic guidance. While it acknowledges that the absolutely safest course of action would be to refrain from sex, it also accepts that abstinence-only education does not work. People are going to get together and they're going to get it on. The best thing that the experts can do is educate people about how to make these activities less risky. To that end, the three-page document correctly notes that kissing might be a riskier amorous activity than actual sex, given that respiratory droplets are the most effective vehicles of disease transmission. (This is an inversion of standard safe sex practices: Kissing generally carries little risk of spreading STDs.) - LAST WEEK: Study says couples should wear MASKS during sex Harvard experts say couples who are not quarantining together should wear FACE MASKS during sex to prevent the spread of coronavirus Sexual partners should consider wearing face masks that cover their noses and mouths while doing the deed. While the advice sounds like something out of a Cosmopolitan magazine guide for spicing things up in the bedroom, it is actually a suggestion from Harvard University researchers, who have offered up a guide on sexual health in the era of COVID-19. The guide, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last month, suggests that couples who are not quarantining together but remain sexually active consider not kissing on the mouth and wearing protective face masks during sex to prevent the spread of coronavirus. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8384891/Couples-arent-quarantining-avoid-kissing-wear-FACE-MASKS-says-study.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus 6-F -- VIRGINIA / COLUMBUS STATUE TOPPLED: - Richmond protesters topple Columbus statue, throw it in lake RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake. The figure was toppled less than two hours after protesters gathered in the city’s Byrd Park were chanting for the statue to be taken down, news outlets reported. After the figure was removed from its pedestal around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by protesters using several ropes, a sign that reads, “Columbus represents genocide” was placed on the spray-painted foundation that once held the statue. It was then set on fire and rolled into a lake in the park, NBC 12 reported. https://wtop.com/virginia/2020/06/richmond-protesters-topple-columbus-statue-throw-it-in-lake/ - Christopher Columbus statues toppled in Richmond, beheaded in Boston Statues of Christopher Columbus were targeted by protesters in Massachusetts and Virginia on Tuesday night in an act of solidarity with indigenous peoples. The 8-foot-tall memorial to the explorer in Richmond, Va., was pulled down with ropes and dragged roughly 200 yards to nearby Landing at Foundation Lake, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. It was also reportedly briefly lit on fire. A makeshift headstone poster was also placed in front of the sunken statute in the water that read, “Racism. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration opposes a Democratic proposal to extend a $600 per week federal unemployment benefit approved in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia said Tuesday. The $600 payment, which is in addition to normal unemployment benefits, "was the right thing to do,'' Scalia said, but is no longer needed as the economy begins to recover. The money, included in a government relief package enacted in late March, has helped millions of workers stay in their homes and pay bills even as the unemployment rate surged to its highest levels since World War II. The payments are set to expire July 31, and Democrats have pushed a plan that would extend the enhanced benefit through January. The Democratic-led House approved the proposal last month, but it is considered unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled Senate. https://wjla.com/news/nation-world/democratic-proposal-of-extending-600-weekly-unemployment-benefit-oppposed-by-trump-admin PUSH FOR MORE DIRECT RELIEF PAYMENTS: Mnuchin: White House will 'seriously look at' sending another round of direct cash payments to some Americans in the fourth coronavirus relief package. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday the Trump administration will "seriously look" at sending another round of direct cash payments to some Americans in the fourth coronavirus relief package. "I think we’re going to seriously look at whether we want to do more direct money to stimulate the economy," Mnuchin said while testifying before the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. "But I think this is all going to be about getting people back to work, and we look forward to working with the entire Senate on this one." At the end of March, Congress passed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, approving one-time payments of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples. There's also an extra $500 payment for each dependent child under the age of 17. The payments were tapered for individuals who earned more than $75,000 and cut-off completely for those earning more than $99,000 https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/mnuchin-trump-admin-to-seriously-look-at-more-direct-payments-in-next-coronavirus-relief-package House Republicans propose offering Americans a 'return to work bonus': Republicans say the bonus could encourage people to "return to work," while a top Democrat rejected it as a replacement for extending emergency UIHouse Republicans are proposing a $1,200 bonus for Americans returning to work as the coronavirus pandemic slows, providing an alternative to Democrats' plan to extend the extra $600 a week in unemployment benefits included in virus-related stimulus legislation.. Republicans on the Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee cited an analysis from CBO to support their idea, instead of extending the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit past its July 31 end date. “The extension of the additional $600 per week would probably reduce employment in the second half of 2020, and it would reduce employment in calendar year 2021. The effects from reduced incentives to work would be larger than the boost to employment from increased overall demand for goods and services," reads the CBO analysis. According to the GOP committee members, the federal expansion of unemployment benefits was "intended to provide relief for those who lost their jobs due to the government lockdown— but these funds shouldn’t undermine a return to work. Rather than continue subsidizing unemployment where it is no longer necessary, these funds can be put to more appropriate use in encouraging workers to return to work." Some congressional Republicans have argued that the extra federal compensation — on top of state weekly unemployment payments — is more than some Americans earned at their jobs before the COVID-19 pandemic. https://justthenews.com/government/congress/house-republicans-propose-offering-americans-return-work-bonus ================================================================= Mornings on the Mall Podcast - 2020-6-11 [00:00:00] 4:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [01:00:15] 5:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [02:00:25] 6:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [03:00:34] 7:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [04:00:46] 8:59 am - Mornings on the Mall

A little while back I received an email from a listener who wished to remain nameless. He decided to get started in competitive shooting, and found a local club that hosted matches, checked out their website, and showed up to shoot his first match. When he arrived, he we met by an apologetic match director who informed him that the match was full, and since he hadn't pre-registered for the match, he unfortunately wouldn't be able to shoot. I don't think this is something that happens all the time (this is the first time I've ever heard of it happening, actually) but it is something that match officials should be aware of. At the very least, update your websites when match registration opens for the next match, or point people to the Facebook page or wherever that you're posting the registration links. (Also, note that Facebook won't show your post to everyone who likes your page unless you pay them, so only posting it to Facebook might not be the best plan.) I'm curious what everyone else things about this. Was this just a one-off thing and not a big deal, or are there some better protocols we could put in place to keep this from happening? Gear that Doesn't Suck I've had an old pair of Mechanix gloves that I use every couple months to get a grip on the oil filter on my car when doing my oil change. They really do a good job of adding some grip to an otherwise slimy/slick filter. However, at a recent match, I used them for re-setting the steel plates that were falling off their stands when shot into the thick muddy clay. They're not waterproof, but they did keep the mud off my hands, and rinsed off nicely in a mud puddle. I'll continue to keep them in my trunk in case I have a muddy match with falling steel again in the future. The News The internet was all up in arms about some zoo somewhere shooting a gorilla to save a baby human from it. I don't really care about that, but I'll say that I do trust the people who are gorilla experts and the decision that they made. However, there was some absolute derp on the internet when this story hit where people were talking about how they would have been the hero here, and shot the gorilla with their CCW gun to save the kid. Listen, your pistol isn't a magical death ray, and it's no match for this sort of animal. Wait for the guy with the big rifle to arrive. That's why you carry a 10mm because you know you might have a to kill a gorilla at the zoo someday or a grizzly bear. You've also certainly heard about the new "documentary" that Katie Couric just put out. It's called "Under the Gun" and the tag line is "In the gun debate, truth is the ultimate weapon", which is HILARIOUS, because as we're finding out, they were anything but truthful when making this film. They supposedly interviewed John Lott, and then didn't include any of that interview in the film. They had a roundtable discussion with some folks from the Virginia Citizens Defense League and edited it to look like they didn't have an answer to a hardball question, when in fact they did. One of the VCDL folks brought along his own voice recorder, just in case this sort of thing were to happen. Lastly, it's coming out that the producers of the film may have actually broken federal law several times. Yeah. For real. Plug of the Week: Tacsoup on Facebook. Check out this page, these folks are hilarious. Contact If you've got anything for me, shoot me an email at luke@triangletactical.net
