All hail Punxatawney Phil! This week, Emily and V go back to the rad 1980s and learn about a fandom they'd never considered before: Starsky & Hutch. It turns out these two slashable dudes helped to forge fandom as we know it today, and the publication of the fic "February 2nd" by Alexis Rogers is a big part of why we all love it when a blond man and a brunet man who are a sunshine one and a grumpy one bone down. Have you considered how to trade slash zines when they were "obscene material"? And will you do your part to launch TWIFH's hip new meme?

Despite the fact that Morgan and Bill said they weren't interested in Groundhog Day, they sure seemed on top of what was happening this morning with Punxatawney Phil. Also, who still has a landline at your house and why do you have one? And, what did your kid buy without your authorization? Was it accidental or not? Plus, a new round of Battle of the Burbs, Megan told us how she left her ex-boyfriend stranded during the Cleveland Confessional, and comedian Heather McMahan joined us...she'll be at Playhouse Square in one week!

Welcome to February 2nd, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate weather predicting rodents and striking potato gold. Today is the midway between the start of winter and the spring equinox. It used to be a pagan celebration of the coming of warmer weather. Christians in Europe adopted aspects of this celebration to create Candlemas. One of the traditions associated with Candlemas was the belief that a sunny day meant another 40 days of cold and snow. Germans put their own spin on this tradition, declaring that Candlemas would be considered sunny only if a badger saw its shadow. When German immigrants came to America, they swapped out the badger for a lovable groundhog and—voila!—Groundhog Day was born. Hopefully today is cloudy and Punxatawney Phil will let us know that Spring is about to be sprung! The brothers Nephi and Golden Grigg were farmers barely scraping by during the Great Depression. They made a bold decision to mortgage their home to purchase the frozen foods plant they had rented along the Oregon Idaho border. The Food Company now known as Ore-Ida began producing frozen corn, but Nephi knew the big money was in French fries. The problem was that the equipment used to cut the fries left an abundance of irregular potato bits, which were at first used to feed cattle. Nephi didn't like throwing away profits and soon devised a way to pack the peelings into tater tots. By 1964 Ore-Ida turned an annual profit of $31 million. On National Tater Tot Day take a tasty bite of the American dream. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Learn more about your ad choices. Mark your calendars for Punxatawney Phil and a new name for one of the worst run organizations in all of pro sports: The WFT. We know this at least, the BEST possible "salvaged" name of "RedWolves" didn't make the cut. GLENN YOUNES of the Ed Reed Foundation joins me to talk about whiskey endorsements, the name change, college football's "Wild West" on NIL money and more. That plus it embarrassing the mistakes sometimes made by multi-million dollar sports pundits. To celebrate the 100th podcast, we present 30 minutes of the craziest, funniest, most touching and most unusual moments in horse racing in 2021. A wonderful interview with Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, a woman dq'd because her brother claimed foul, the night Garnet Barnsdale went 10 for 10, a horse named Ho Ho Ho that didn't have anything to laugh about, Punxatawney Phil winning on Ground Hog Day and what could possibly go wrong if you bet a horse called Whacudposblygowrng? Imagine being a race caller and there's only 3 horses in a race. How do you make it sound interesting? There was a night at Mohawk when the number 7 just kept coming in and how did we mix the Kennedy assassination and a classic episode from Seinfeld into this podcast?

Guten Morgen liebe Klasse!
