Sharing data transparently, whether at a local or a national level, is a foundational contributor to healthcare quality. Atul Gawande wrote about this in his 2004 essay labeled ‘The Bell Curve'. Over the last several decades, we have seen many pediatric specialties organize and collaborate around data collection at a national scale to improve care. We've seen firsthand how our hospital's participation in a national cardiac critical care registry has driven quality improvement, better measurable outcomes and improved cardiac arrest rates for patients. Getting the data collection right is the first challenge. In between that first step and actually seeing improvements is a tremendous amount of work. In this episode, we explore the value of data sharing and transparency to improve outcomes for kids. Our experts for this episode are Carly Scahill, DO, and Kelly O'Neil. Dr. Scahill specializes in pediatric cardiology as a pediatric cardiac intensivist. She is also the Fellowship Director for pediatric cardiology and the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), as well as an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Kelly O'Neil is a registered nurse and the Manager of the Heart Institute Data Registries and Outcomes. Before her current role, she was a CICU nurse for over ten years. Some highlights from this episode include: The purpose and use of clinical registries How data collection improves measurable outcomes The future of data collection in healthcare How to get more entities involved For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org.

Actions speak louder than words, so journalists should conclude that Israel's war on Gaza is proceeding exactly as the Biden administration likes, argues Jeremy Scahill, one of the co-founders of the independent news website The Intercept.Scahill tells host Steve Clemons that the United States offers political, legal, diplomatic and military support for Israel's scorched-earth campaign, while some officials have voiced concern for Palestinian lives.Scahill argues that even if Hamas did not exist, Israel would face armed resistance because, over the decades, Palestinians have been sent the message that diplomacy would not work and Israel would not treat them as human beings.

We're starting off the month having returned from a great trip to the Thompson Center for Autism 2023 Conference. Hurricane Lee even gave us another day to spend in Missouri to ponder all the exciting episodes coming your way. First, we revisit strategies for improving your parent training methods. Then we're joined by special guests Landria Green and Jared Van to discuss scope of comfort (NOT confidence) and the dreaded standard celeration chart. Finally, a bonus featuring some great posters from the conference, including a returning presenter. We avoided gushing about how awesome City Museum is but let's just say it's one more reason to join us out in St. Louis next September! Rapport building is one of those terms that we think we know it when we see it and agree should be a part of our client-therapist interactions. But when you think about it for a minute, do we really know how to “rapport”? This week, strategists at JPMorgan, the biggest U.S. bank, warned there are signs of “de-dollarization” around the world. Dedollarization is the push by countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and others, to move away from the U.S. dollar as the world's primary reserve currency. This move poses a big challenge to U.S. economic hegemony. This week on Intercepted, Canadian businessperson and mining financier Frank Giustra joins Jeremy Scahill and Murtaza Hussain to discuss the prospective move toward nations' dedollarization. Giustra breaks down the history of how the U.S. dollar became the world's primary reserve currency. Scahill, Hussain, and Giustra then discuss the different nations and the political and economic motivations to dedollarize and how the U.S. government may respond in order to maintain its economic hegemony. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/join — your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. U.S. war planners have indicated that Ukraine plans to launch a spring offensive in an effort to retake territory lost in Russia's invasion. Military analysts have also suggested that Kyiv, backed by the U.S.-led NATO alliance and its weapons shipments, is likely to attempt to purge Russia from Crimea. Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that he has no plans to cease his military operations, and the stage is being set for further bloodshed with no end in sight. This week on Intercepted, the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft's Kelley Beaucar Vlahos joins Jeremy Scahill and Murtaza Hussain for a wide-ranging discussion on the proxy war, the uniform support among Democrats for Joe Biden's policies on Ukraine, and the growing opposition among Republicans to funding the war. Last week, a group of Republican lawmakers sent a letter to President Biden saying they will no longer support what they called “unrestrained” aid to Ukraine. And they added they “will adamantly oppose all future aid packages unless they are linked to a clear diplomatic strategy designed to bring this war to a rapid conclusion.” The letter, which was signed by 19 Republicans, included three senators: Mike Lee, Rand Paul, and J.D. Vance. Vlahos, Scahill, and Hussain also discuss the various factions comprising the current GOP and discuss how the enduring focus on Russiagate and the 2016 election has fed into the discourse on the war in Ukraine. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/join — your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. Amidst massive protests around the United States and the world, on March 19, 2003, the U.S. began its invasion of Iraq. This week on Intercepted, Jeremy Scahill, Murtaza Hussain, and Iraqi journalist Ghaith Abdul-Ahad discuss the long-lasting impact of the war on Iraq and its people. Throughout the 20 years since the invasion, Iraq was torn to shreds by a gratuitous American occupation and a U.S.-fueled sectarian civil war. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians died as U.S. policy gave rise to Al Qaeda — and ultimately the Islamic State in Iraq. While many commemorations of this bloody anniversary focus on the 2003 invasion, the plans to destroy Iraq were launched much earlier and were supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. Scahill, Hussain, and Abdul-Ahad discuss life under Saddam Hussein, the lead-up to the U.S. invasion, the brutality of the occupation, and the systematic refusal to bring any accountability for those responsible.“Of course, the Iraqis could not believe that their new colonial masters had no clue, had done no planning and made no preparations for what was going to happen after they invaded the country,” Abdul-Ahad writes in his new book, “A Stranger in Your Own City: Travels in the Middle East's Long War.” “When the myth of an American-generated prosperity clashed with the realities of occupation, chaos and destruction followed. Resentment and anger swept the country and all the suppressed rage of the previous decades exploded.”Abdul-Ahad shares stories from his deeply human reporting on his personal journey from an architect living in Baghdad to a celebrated international journalist documenting the rise and fall of ISIS.If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/join — your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: The World Economic Forum Conference—an international non-governmental lobbying organization—is set to kick off their annual summit in Davos, Switzerland on Monday. The meeting's primary concerns: environmentalism and climate change. But how many conference participants will be arriving in private jets? According to a study from Greenpeace, an estimated 1,040 private jets were used by attendees at the 2022 World Economic Forum conference. BlackRock CEO Larry Fink warned that he expects a recession in 2023. While appearing on Fox News, investigative journalist Matt Tiabbi estimated that 500 to 1,000 people from multiple federal government agencies were involved in censoring social media posts, specifically on Twitter. The Intercept's Jeremy Scahill writes that in the 1970s then-Senator Joe Biden scuttled President Jimmy Carter's nomination of Ted Sorenson to CIA Director, alleging that Sorenson had unlawfully possessed classified documents. Biden, according to Scahill, even suggested Sorenson could be prosecuted under the Espionage Act.
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/16/2023): 3:00pm- On Saturday, the White House released a statement revealing that five additional pages containing classified information were found at President Joe Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware. According to The New York Times, the classified documents “were discovered hours after a White House statement on Thursday morning that cited only one" page had been “discovered the night before in a storage area adjacent to the garage.” 3:20pm- While appearing on MSNBC, former Congressman David Jolly argued that President Joe Biden should be praised for his handling of classified documents—arguing that after discovering the documents, Biden did exactly what he was supposed to do by contacting the proper authorities. 3:45pm- Speaking with Jonathan Karl on ABC's This Week, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) endorsed Attorney General Merrick Garland's decision to appoint a special counsel to investigate Joe Biden's mishandling of classified documents. Schiff said he couldn't “exclude the possibility” that there was a national security risk to Biden's actions. 3:50pm- Chairman of the House Oversight Committee James Comer (R-TN) questioned why the discovery of the Biden documents wasn't announced immediately after they were discovered on November 2nd—speculating that it likely had to do with the impact the news could have had on the highly consequential November 8th midterm elections. 3:55pm- Why was Hunter Biden paying Joe Biden $50,000 a month for rent at the Wilmington home where classified documents were discovered? According to a report from Zero Hedge, “the most expensive home currently for rent in Wilmington, Delaware is going for $6,000 per month.” 4:00pm- Despite seven whales washing-up along New Jersey beaches, Governor Phil Murphy insists he will not halt the development of massive offshore windmill farms. Environmental organizations have expressed concern that the dead whales could be the result of development-related exploration of the ocean floor. 4:15pm- Recently on 60 Minutes, Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich warned of an unavoidable “mass extinction.” Ehrlich has a long history of making inaccurate doomsday predictions: in the 1970's he famously warned that overpopulation would cause mass starvation and chaos, in the 1990's he stated Florida and Washington D.C. would soon be underwater, and in 2014 he suggested that in the not-too-distant future society will be forced to eat human bodies. 4:35pm- In an attempted defense of Joe Biden's mishandling of classified documents, The New York Times published an article titled, “Documents Inquiry Puts Spotlight on Biden's Frenetic Last Days as Vice President”—suggesting that the chaotic finally days of the Obama Administration are responsible for Biden's carelessness. NYT White House correspondents Peter Baker and Michael D. Shear also name White House aides who may be responsible for misplacing the classified documents now at the center of a Justice Department's special counsel investigation. Zeoli wonders: Who, from the Biden Administration, coordinated with Baker and Shear to write this defense? 4:50pm- Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy said that Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had no say in the Biden Administration's decision to hide the classified documents scandal from the press for two-months. So, who is making these decisions? 5:00pm- The World Economic Forum Conference—an international non-governmental lobbying organization—is set to kick off their annual summit in Davos, Switzerland on Monday. The meeting's primary concerns: environmentalism and climate change. But how many conference participants will be arriving in private jets? In Part 2 of his Holiday Gift Guide series, Dennis is joined via Zoom by four different creative entrepreneurs who have products that are perfect for holiday gift giving. First up is film professor Andy Scahill, the founder of Cinema for Sodomites, an interactive cult movie screening series and a merch line inspired by such gay favorites as Batman Returns, Death Becomes Her and Steel Magnolias. Andy talks about why he decided to launch the series and merch line, the Troop Beverly Hills screening where people got to design their own gay merit badges and confirms that yes, the Cinema for Sodomites logo does kind of look like a butthole. Next up is James Carroll the co-author/designer of The Showgirls Activity Book, which is a book of word searches, mazes and images for coloring inspired by the iconic film Showgirls. James recalls discovering the movie as a teen in South Africa, makes the case for why Nomi Malone is a feminist hero and reveals the plans he has for future books inspired by Clueless, Mean Girls and The Birdcage. Paul Ybarra AKA Paul Straightjacket is next and shares the origin story behind his creative brainchild, The Straightjacket Tarot, a deck of tarot cards featuring self-portraits of Paul wearing his favorite garment in the world; a straight jacket. Paul talks about the origins of his straightjacket fetish and explains why he decided to share it with the world in this unique way and he also recalls the time he got stuck in a straight jacket alone for eight hours and thought he might have to call 9-1-1 with his mouth. The episode's final guest is Andrew Harper, a visual artist and choreographer based in Georgia who, during the pandemic, launched Reissued, an online store that features original clothing designs, one-of-a-kind purses and a set of notecards featuring Andrew's original works of art. Andrew also talks about how he became “thrift store influencer” and sings the praises of the skimpy retro running shorts he rocks on Instagram. And all four guests talk about how creating their business and getting their stuff out in the world has enriched their lives in unexpected ways. On Episode 206 I sit down with Allison Scahill. Allison is a friend of mine from CrossFit Roots. If you recall, on Episode 197 I sat down for a conversation with her husband, Cary Hair. Naturally, I had to get the other, arguably more accurate, side of the story. Allison works for CrossFit HQ as a Copy Editor and has been with the company for 12 years now. On this episode, we talk about her journey to finding CrossFit, working for CrossFit HQ, writing and why that is such a passion of hers, and so much more. As always, I truly hope that you enjoy this conversation! Thank you for listening!!
The Summer of Camp rolls on as Professor Andy Scahill returns to discuss our very first John Waters film, Female Trouble (1974). This is a great introduction to Waters, the Dreamlanders and Divine in a film that defines bad taste and trash.Come for the discussion on why Christmas is hard on queers, our love of Mink Stole and how the film evokes Waters' counter culture approach to indie filmmaking. As the US deals with its exit from Afghanistan, at least some are questioning the role of our military in the world. Here's my 2013 conversation with JEREMY SCAHILL about his book and Oscar-nominated documentary, DIRTY WARS:The World is a Battlefield. Scahill reveals lethal covert operations unknown to the public, being done on your dime and in your name. How much has our military presence changed since 2013? I found articles published in 2021 that count up to 700 US bases in up to 80 countries.

Sounds like a great coupla of weeks. There is a varied mix of celebratory and solemn events coming up, for sure, each deserving of our attention. So, make plan, if you can. AND remember: Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened! No Regerts! This morning, we buried my sister Noreen. To our listeners, thank you for all if the hugs, well wishes, shared stories and friendship. At her passing, she was surrounded by all of her kids, grandkids, siblings and our parents. She said several times as we all prayed together, that she was at peace, and I believe that she is. We each told of what will always remind her of us, of how we know she is near when we see it, and she smiled as best she could. She could hear our conversation, tho her oxygen assisted breath was labored. “I am fine, I am fine” she said. We cannot do justice to her heart, her fight, her grace, her faith, her smile, her active support of so many, and her deep love for God. This is Noreen's Alliteration I see you in the water, when you wouldn't let me drown I see you in the in the music, as opposed to watching The Crown I see you on the ice, and a fistfight with the male bully I got your glasses safe; the lessons I absorbed, fully I see you singing at Erieview High, in Annie Get Your Gun impressions I see you in your young Annie, the motions and facial expressions I hear you in my head, with gentle little nudges Cape Cod –trying to teach me to smile, we wept over the judges The green crash and Roger Fallon, the IA at West 93rd Camogie, The Jerk, the front porch, the sounds I never heard At times we had like-minded magic, at times we had Dairy Queen And of course, we had St. Patrick's Day, laughing over everything, so obnoxiously green The stories of Mike, the depths of love, the hope running ever eternal Watching you raise your kids, trying not to laugh, while eyes seemed fire infernal Instilling the love, of God & country, and the one across the pond The door always open; the kettle always boiling, of this we are inordinately fond I see you in the church, and the bishop embracing The love of God rising by day, so many trials head on facing I see you Irish dancing, and thinking, Hell NO Why did you have to leave us, with so many joys still to go? I bid you farewell; watch over your kids and theirs too There's nothing stronger than a mother's love, for what else can a mother do? Tho you fret, though you worried, you will always be adored Rest in peace, Dear Noni, in the gentle arms of our Lord *** Noreen's obituary reads: Noreen O'Brien Beardmore April 28, 1961 - June 13, 2021 Noreen Theresa (O'Brien) Beardmore passed away on Sunday, June 13 at home, surrounded by her family. Her last hours were filled with faith, praying rosaries with friends the night before her passing and with her family the morning of. Noreen fought a vigorous battle with cancer and her family considers the battle won as her whole life is a miracle. Noreen was born in Montreal, Canada to Irish immigrant parents on April 28, 1961 and was the oldest of four children. As a devout Catholic family, the O'Brien's never missed Mass. When they moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1963, their home melded the best of Irish-American culture, including a beloved Irish festival that the whole family participated in running. Noreen graduated from the all-girls Catholic high school St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland, Ohio in 1979 and was class president. Cleveland served as the highly social platform for her upbringing as she attended dances, organized fundraisers, and navigated the city working various jobs to earn money for school. Noreen attended Duquesne University to study nursing. While at Duquesne, she was awarded the Heinz scholarship for women in global leadership which allowed her to travel to many different countries. When asked during the interview process about which quality defined her most, she said, "I am, above all things, a Catholic." Noreen was truly a very devout woman. She hungered to know the teachings of the faith and to love Jesus more and more. She spent time volunteering at St. Boniface Parish, the Lafayette Catholic Schools System, and to personal prayer and growth in faith. As a nurse, Noreen was the first person in Ohio to be accepted by the Amish community to give immunizations. She was tender with patients and loved her career as pediatric nurse. It is how she met her husband, pediatrician Mike Beardmore. Noreen married Mike in 1990 and they moved to Lafayette, Indiana. Their marriage was one of deep love, hard work, and beautifully shared values. Together they raised 8 children and sent them all through Catholic schools. Noreen and Mike built a family that was centered on humor, music, quality time, and faith. They too ensured that Mass was never missed, and family dinner was central to their lives together. Noreen served as a member of the Governance Board of the Catholic Schools and started a Catholic moms group called "What Would Mary Do?" Unofficially, she was known for seeking out new moms in the parking lot or recognizing when young moms were having a tough time. Noreen loved to connect people with new friends or opportunities that used their gifts. Later in life she worked as the Health & Safety coordinator for the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. When Noreen was diagnosed with cancer, the family committed fervently to family rosaries and she brought many others into the fold. A weekly zoom rosary was started for friends from around the country and in Ireland to pray together for healing. These friends say it was an inspiring group to be part of, par for the course for a friendship with Noreen. Recently Noreen was given the "He Leads, I Follow" Award from St. Boniface Principal Sr. Lenore and former pastor Fr. Tim Alkire. Noreen was presented a statue of Blessed Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel for the goodness and humanity she has shown to so many people. Noreen wasn't perfect. She wasn't good at cooking eggs until her later years. She frequently told her children that she couldn't hear herself think. And she kept far too many Martha Stewart magazines with very little intention of ever reading them again. But those closest to her say that she always knew the right thing to say. She was everyone's shoulder to cry on. And her children would have rathered had a short amount of time with her as a mother than a lifetime with any other. There was always room at the table with Noreen and her magazine-worthy garden doesn't compare to the blooms of friendships she cultivated and kept around the world. Her family is certain that she will work even harder from Heaven for her friends and family and encouraged everyone to reach out in prayer to Noreen throughout their lives. Noreen is survived by her loving husband, Mike and her eight children: Caitie, Tommy (fiancé Natasha), Brian, John & Casey, Will, Michael, Annie & Caroline. She has two grandchildren: Henry & Peter. She is also survived by her parents; John & Eileen O'Brien of Cleveland, her sisters Cathy (John Lang)of Cincinnati and Patricia (Philip Parente) and brother, John, Jr. of Cleveland. She has 11 nieces and nephews who have always meant so much to her. Proceeding her in death is her infant daughter, Mary Clare, who the family knows greeted her excitedly in Heaven. Although Noreen loved flowers, what would mean most to her would be the Catholic education of more children. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Lafayette Catholic School System. *** I need time. I can't look back, over the pain. How does life go on, when death quakes our earth? Don't let it happen to you. Grace us with your music. Now more than ever, wider audiences need to dance to all the beauty around us. Hope to see you soon. Keep the hugs and prayers coming. This week's episode is the second, concluding part of our series reviewing concepts and topics from last season. (If you haven't yet listened to part 1, you can find it here.)In part 2 of our re:verb “re:cap,” we rekindle the critical ideas brought up in episodes 6 through 9. First, we build upon our discussion of urban renewal and gentrification from episodes 6 & 7, talking through the ongoing transparency controversy at the heart of Pittsburgh's “bid” for Amazon HQ2, the economistic frames used by both proponents and opponents of the bid, and the difficulty of staging place-based resistance to massive corporate entities like Amazon. Then, we examine two cases that exemplify people's affective & emotional attachments to evidence (a call-back to Jenny Rice's work, discussed in episode 8): the liberal-left split over #Russiagate and the cryptic, all-encompassing, extremely-online #QAnon conspiracy. We go on to discuss the brilliant treatment of language ideology (a concept previously covered in episode 9) in the film Sorry to Bother You (Boots Riley, 2018), particularly its depiction of code-switching and “white voice.”Finally, we reflect on some of the unresolved tensions across all of our conversations on the show so far: rhetorics of “the future,” certainty vs. uncertainty, the role of aesthetics in rhetoric, and the relationship between language and power.Previous episodes discussed:Episode 6: How do spaces and places function in resistance movements? (Rhetorics of Place: Part 1) (w/ Derek Handley & Liana Maneese)Episode 7: What are the economic, social, and political forces fueling gentrification? (Rhetorics of Place: Part 2) (w/ Scott Riess)Episode 8: What can conspiracy theories teach us about how we use "evidence"? (w/ Jenny Rice)Episode 9: How does language influence our identity (and vice-versa)? (w/ Barbara Johnstone)Works & Concepts Referenced in this Episode:Creswell, J. (2018, Aug. 5).
