Quintin Smith is one third of People Make Games, although hopefully you already knew that. Outside of his work with us, he's also known as the co-founder of board games behemoth Shut Up & Sit Down and now, as of just a few weeks ago, he's started something brand new, exploring the world of TTRPGs. It's called Quinns Quest and it's extremely weird and good, just like Quinns."If you just go into a community going 'hey, I wanna understand why this is fun for you', people will tell you! People are able to explain their passions and once you know their passions, you can ask about those passions in more detail and once you've got that, you're able to understand the community. There are no weirdos."Support the show
Support the show! Today, we're talking to Quintin Smith aka Quinns, who has been reviewing boardgames for more than a decade with the iconic show, Shut Up and Sit Down. Then about 3 years ago, Quintin joined People Make Games to cover everything from Roblox's relationship to child labour to the battle for ownership and control of Disco Elysium, from the revival of kabaddi in India to phenomenon that is jubensha in china. Now, he's gone and started Quinns Quest, a new youtube channel to review tabletop roleplaying games that feels like a lot like that one weird show where William Riker from Star Trek looked at the camera and asked us if we believed in ghosts. Don't worry, listeners, we're going to ask the question on everyone's mind: why? Show Notes: [00:02:00] What makes a good review? We talk with Quinns from People Make Games to about the Mystery Role-Play craze that has taken hold of China; Jubensha. What sets it apart from the Mystery Dinner Parties that accompany every crime fiction festival and book club? We also speak about role-play in the English speaking world, the complications of safety tools, and more of Quinns' experience playing Jubensha during his investigation. Make sure you also catch Quinns' work on Shut Up & Sit Down, and his new TTRPG channel Quinn's Quest.
In this complete failure of a Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Quintin Smith and Tom Brewster are coming to you, hats in hand, to apologise profusely for not making a robust and fully-featured video review of the ancient game of Mahjong. In this episode, we talk about Mahjong, our experiences playing it for review, and why it didn't quite make its way onto your screens! Have a great weekend, everybody!
WE ARE BACK! Life has been hectic, but I now have an accountability partner (Quintin Smith). This episode we look into the controversy behind nature vs nurture. A black boy in an african home and black community (me) or a black boy in a semi-asian home, in a black community (Quintin). Times change, people change, and cultures change so listen in as we uncover how that change affects an individual.

Here's a look back at one of our favorite episodes about sex work inside the still-thriving virtual world of Second Life. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did, and we'll talk with you next week! -- Original Show Notes | June 22, 2020 -- Cybersex is as old as the Internet itself. But as virtual spaces become more sophisticated, so too has sex work. Second Life is more of a "technology playground" than a video game -- a place where your digital skills can be traded for real money. Many players make a healthy living by providing custom goods or services, including sex work. This week, Alli and Jen speak with Meela Vanderbuilt, the creator and owner of The Mondarchy, the most expensive brothel in Second Life. She's also joined by Reyna, the club's general staff manager. Together, they explain the culture of Second Life (which began way back in 2003), why Meela's brown-skinned avatar was rejected by other clubs. the inspiration for starting her own, and how sex work...works in a virtual world. It's our annual (semi-annual?), let's respond to some...interesting claims made on YouTube episode! In this installment - Is Roblox, one of the most popular gaming platforms in the world, exploiting your child? What you don't know...probably won't change your understanding of the underlying voluntary transactions at play here. That said, there's much to discuss as Shut Up and Sit Down's Quintin Smith gets *extravagant* on behalf of People Make Games. How do board games encourage players to explore ideas, politics and morals? We meet Matt Leacock, designer of the game Pandemic, which has been used at medical schools to encourage co-operation, communication and strategy for trainees. Reiner Knizia, designer of 700 board games, talks about how making a game out of tasks can change players' behaviour in daily life. We explore the rise of a new generation of games where players collaborate, rather than oppose each other, in titles that deal with politics, hip-hop, ecology, employment, climate change and more. Quintin Smith from Shut Up & Sit Down discusses new trends in design, while Michelle Browne, designer of World of Work, tells us about the game that explores employment and social benefits. Presented and produced by Zoë Comyns. A New Normal production for the BBC World Service Image: The board game Pandemic (Courtesy of Matt Leacock)

Episode 17 features my interview with Quintin Smith, former Kansas Jayhawk and Chicago Bears wide receiver. Quintin's depth of experience provides a unique perspective of the game. After earning All Big Eight honors at Kansas in 1989, he signed as a free agent with the Bears and spent two season there. Quintin then spent six years as an NFL Scout, five with Kansas City and one with Minnesota. His scouting experience led to an opportunity as the Director of Player Personnel for the (first edition) XFL's Chicago Enforcers.Since 2001, Quintin has been coaching, making multiple stops at the High School and College levels, including his Alma Mater - Yates HS in Houston. He had the privilege of playing for Yates as a Senior in 1985 when they became the first UIL Class 5 team to go 16-0, as well as the first UIL State Champion from the Houston ISD. The 1985 Yates HS team is considered one of the greatest teams in Texas HS football history!Quintin is a self-proclained "old school" football coach, who subscribes to the philosophy of earning your way through hard work and perseverance. He believes true football talent will be visible, no matter where you play...hence the statement, "If you can play, they'll find you!" Quintin's advice to young athletes today is to set goals and choose your friends wisely. Hang out with "like-minded" people who will encourage and support your growth, rather than drag you backwards.Intro music "Next Level" used under license by Composer Rujay Torres.

We're back with another Dark Insight, so pull up a chair in front of this lovely fire, grab yourself a biscuit, maybe give the lovely dog a pat on the head to reassure it that it's in good company...and relax! This week, Josh and Vader are joined by the fantastic Matt from Monster Dear Monster! Together, the 3 of them discuss the weather, and how an 800 watt microwave is enough to shrivel the U.K. to a blubbering mess, then it's onto the news! A smattering of topics are talked about, including but not limited to the new Castlevania Netflix series, some juicy deets on Nintendo's online service proposal, and how a honeymoon ruined somebody's gamer score. I know, imagine that, digital achievements being upset by a truly wonderful event! You just couldn't write it! Then it's onto the game chat, where they talk about MGSV (surprising no-one, this was Josh's doing, he couldn't help himself) as well as TrackMania Turbo, Diablo 3, Killer Instinct, Injustice 2, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, Eternal, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Oceanhorn, Nier Automata, Ancient Amuletor VR..then they finally round off with a little game called Shadow of the Colossus! It's a fun packed show! Thank you everybody for listening, please seek us out on Twitter, at darkinsight.net and iTunes or your podcast app of choice to subscribe and leave us a rating. Here come the creeps, led by Rob and Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Quintin Smith! Fortunately, they encounter a maze of discussion and towers of topics. Inspired by first-person tower defender Sanctum and tower attacker Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Quinns and Rob explore how these games change the tower defense formula, and what about that formula needed changing? Are we doing a disservice to a neat mechanic by insisting that it is a genre? Why are we continually drawn in by games we often find shallow and unsatisfying? Is tower defense really about destruction, or is there an under-served creative aspect to these games? A lot of games and pieces come up for discussion here, so brace yourself for a link attack.
