William Hess-Martin of Venatic Opus is a writer, hunter, artist and Jungian in Southern Quebec, Canada. On this Jungian walkabout, we explore a handful of the ideas of Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as they relate to hunting. After Jungian readings about hunting taboos & ritual in native cultures, we begin with musings on Canada, America, Europe, Catholicism and Protestantism all leading to St. Hubert [the patron saint of hunters] for a discussion about the symbology, history and legend of the saint's conversion before the divine stag. From Hubert's stag to William's buck, we hear the story of William's first whitetail hunt and what that meant for him opening conversations on instincts, the search, and the numinous. Through the symbol of the white deer, William dives into Carl Jung's study of alchemy as a metaphor for personal transformation, a combining of the material with the spiritual; including the Greek myth of the huntress Atalanta appearing in an alchemical text from the 1600's. Then we're on to the fantastical unicorn of medieval legend & lore with William beautifully describing the famous Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries with their Edenic forests, hounds, huntsmen, and the pure-hearted virgin. We end this Jungian trek on the most Jungian topic possible...the interpretation of dreams, and hunting dreams no less!

After one of the more enjoyable dog events I've been a part of in quite a while, I sat down with long time friend of the show, Grayson Guyer, and newer friend of the show, Jake Bartells, to recap the event and bat around ideas of why we thought it was so successful. The St Huberts trial was a completely different style of event than what we've all grown accustomed to and it was encouraging to see a "new" concept or idea find success. It made us curious as to what else might be possible within the bird dog community if we started openly discussing and pitching fresh ideas. Can the community still show up and just have fun? Walking with the Saints l Feast of St. Hubert, Patron Saint of Hunters, Archers and Forest Workers l November 3 Perhaps we never imagined that hunters have a special patron. Well, today's saint was a celebrated hunter and is highly venerated by those who love this sport. But later, he was also a Bishop who converted many pagans to Christianity and destroyed several places of idolatrous worship. Friends, we now present to you the fascinating life of St. Hubert of Acquitaine, France. Hubert was born in 656, the son of the Duke of Acquitaine. Coming from the nobility, he engaged in the many frivolous practices of the youth of his time. He also learned the skills of riding on horseback and the use of bow and arrow, beneficial to him both as a hunter and a soldier. He was an athletic and handsome young man who sought the pleasures and admiration of the world. His mother prayed very much for his conversion and urged him to turn away from his worldly ambitions. When he was 26 years old, he married Floribonne, a girl who influenced him to rekindle his faith in the Almighty. But shortly after the birth of their first child, Floribonne died leaving Hubert crushed and grief-stricken. Hubert felt so confused and got very angry with God and planned to abandon his faith. He spent all his time in hunting, but God was preparing something special for him. One Good Friday, Hubert set out on horseback to hunt. He came upon a group of people for the Lenten celebration and the priest asked him to join them. But Hubert refused and went his way. Surprisingly, while in the woods, Hubert saw a male deer with large antlers, looking straight at him. While he readied his bow and arrow to strike the deer, he noticed that there was a crucifix radiant with light, between the deer's antlers. Then he heard a voice telling him to turn back to God. Hubert got down from the horse and knelt on the ground promising that he would follow what the voice had told him. Faithful to his promise, Hubert gave his birthright, as eldest son, to his younger brother and made him guardian of his own son. Soon, he met Bishop Lambert of Maaschrit, who encouraged him to become a priest. He entered a Monastery in Belgium and was ordained a priest. In 705, Hubert succeeded Bishop Lambert as Bishop of Maaschrit, Nethertlands. Bishop Hubert was a dynamic preacher. He used his skill in the use of bow and arrow to attract many people to listen to his sermons. Many changed their ways and renewed their devotion to God. The tepid became truly fervent. After the death of Bishop Lambert (who would later become a saint) Bishop Hubert erected a shrine for St. Lambert's relics at Liege, France. Many miracles happened in that place. Bishop Hubert lived a very devout life and God rewarded him even on this earth. One day in the year 726, in Terveuren, near Brussels, Bishop Hubert , while in prayer, had a vision of his own death. A few days later, on May 30, while reciting the “Our Father” he died. During the Middle Ages, devotion to him was very popular. Military orders were named after him and he was made the patron saint of hunters, archers and forest workers. His feast day is November 3. This day marks the beginning of the hunting season in Europe. humility, obedience, patience, perseverance, faith and bravery Prayer: “Dear Lord, I beg You to give me the grace to grow in holiness and embrace seriously my Christian duties.
Grayson recaps his recent hunting trip, discusses changes to this Season's St Hubert's Trial, and muses about the origins of the relationship between man and dog. You'll need to order a vital ingredient, Sirop de Liège, a thick, dark apple & pear sauce dating back to the 1600's or you can substitute for a milder flavor with apple butter. Recipe should work just fine with pork, beef, venison, beaver, wild boar.Music provided by Dr. Clare Longendyke & Dr. Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek"Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major, D. 929, Op. 100 II. Historic Yarra Valley winery St Huberts has recently had a relaunch. There's some exciting new wine styles, and a long overdue packaging overhaul. And what was previously a very basic cellar door – in a building affectionately known as ‘the toilet block' – has been completely redeveloped. St Huberts' owner Treasury Wine Estates partnered with Ryan Hospitality Group to create its new home comprising a Modern Australian and European-inspired restaurant called Quarters, the Hubert Gallery of Art – which showcases works by Indigenous artists – and of course the revamped St Hubert's Cellar Door. St Huberts chief winemaker Greg Jarratt joins us on the Drinks Adventures podcast to discuss these exciting changes, and its latest crop of wines including some serious expressions of the regional flagships, pinot noir and chardonnay. There's also some lesser seen varieties – pinot blanc and pinot meunier – and a stellar blanc de noirs sparkling rose from the 2015 vintage. This is a special episode of Drinks Adventures, produced in partnership with St Huberts. I must confess to not knowing a huge amount about the winery's back story. So first up, I asked Greg for a potted history, and some insight on what makes St Huberts' wine style unique.

Dr. Hadassah St. Hubert's dissertation focuses on the motivations of successive Haitian governments from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s in participating in world's fairs abroad and in mounting expositions in Haiti. In particular, it explores why and how world's fairs became a primary path through which Haitian officials and elites sought to represent and defend the nation's image internationally. World's fairs were mostly held in countries of the global north as showcases of national progress, imperial reach and power. Having overthrown French colonial rule in 1804 and been denigrated by detractors abroad for decades thereafter, Haitian governments sought to demonstrate through participation in late nineteenth century expositions that they and people of African descent more broadly were capable of “civilization.” While colonized “others” were being displayed at human zoos at these international events, Haiti, the sole independent black nation participating, attempted to represent itself as a beacon of black progress through the nation's pavilion architecture and displays. Haitian governments in the late nineteenth century also sought investment and new markets for Haitian goods and products through participation in and mounting of world's fairs. The government of Sténio Vincent (1930-1941) participated particularly actively in international expositions, even while Haiti was still under U.S. occupation. Vincent used each event to declare Haiti's sovereignty, seek European trade and investment, and highlight Haitian history and culture to attract tourism. His administration created a precedent for how future Haitian governments represented the nation abroad in these contexts. Under the presidency of Dumarsais Estimé (1946-1950), Haiti launched its own Bicentennial International Exposition (1949-1950), which transformed a portion of the capital of Port-au-Prince into a visionary “modern” city that celebrated the culture and production of the Haitian masses in order to draw tourists. My study concludes with an examination of Haiti's participation in expositions in the 1960s during the dictatorship of François Duvalier (1957-1971). The Duvalier regime continued Haiti's long-standing tradition of participation in world's fairs and expositions to counter negative international portrayals of the country. In this case, the bad press Duvalier sought to counter stemmed from his authoritarian abuses of power. The Duvalier regime, known for its black nationalist rhetoric asserting Haiti's autonomy, participated in these international events to attract foreign investment, revealing a dependency on the very western nations from which it claimed its independence. My dissertation contributes to our understanding of how successive Haitian governments negotiated neocolonial relationships at these international events to uplift the nation's image, open foreign markets for Haitian products, encourage foreign investment, and cultivate tourism. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/negmawonpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/negmawonpodcast/support
