Nothing could be more sterile – or more frightening – than a cold, spare interrogation room. Victims and suspects alike are brought into these spaces where they are questioned by police and videotaped for later use as evidence. But what happens when the victim, even without realizing it, becomes the suspect – and the suspect becomes the lead witness? This is the disturbing truth uncovered in Nancy Schwartzman's (“Roll Red Roll”) probing new documentary “Victim/Suspect”. Nancy and producer/main subject Rae de Leon, the investigative reporter who broke the story for “Reveal”, join Ken to discuss the tragic circumstances and byzantine reporter's journey at the heart of this Orwellian nightmare. What incentives drive some police officers to doubt the stories of sexual assault victims and instead use the interrogation process to gather “evidence” against them for filing a false police report? How did a documentary filmmaker and an investigative reporter join forces and navigate the best way to work together? And in what ways are the stories of the women featured in the film and Rae's reporting being used to change police department practices across the country? The interrogation room will be better off for it. “Victim/Suspect” is currently streaming on Netflix. Kenzie and Ame are back! This week, they are discussing the Netflix documentary Roll Red Roll. This is the case of the rape and dehumanization of a 16 year old girl by a couple of the star players on the high school football team in Steubenville, Ohio. An end of summer party turns dark in the wee hours of the morning when an unconscious Jane Doe is taken advantage of, while also having several spectators to her assault. Not only was there photographs taken, but the whole town's teenage population seemed to speak openly about it on social media. When it looked as though this would be yet another case being swept under the rug for the beloved Big Red football team, a local blogger took it upon herself to expose the posted these kids so carelessly left all over the internet. This started the wildfire that would sweep the nation and even gain global attention for the brutal and callus things many young women have had to endure at the hands of their popular male peers.

Roll Red Roll is a true-crime thriller that goes behind the headlines to uncover the deep- seated and social media-fueled “boys will be boys” culture at the root of high school sexual assault in America. Director & Producer Nancy expands on the true story of the 2012 rape case of Jane Doe, how social media played a role in the case, and what she wishes her audience to take away from this "bone chilling" documentary.
The gripping new documentary Roll Red Roll goes behind the headlines on a story that grabbed the national attention seven years ago. At a pre-season football party in small-town Steubenville, Ohio, a heinous crime took place: the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team. What transpired would garner national attention and result in the sentencing of two key offenders. But it was the disturbing social media evidence uncovered online by crime blogger Alex Goddard that provoked the most powerful questions about the case, and about the collusion of teen bystanders, teachers, parents and coaches to protect the assailants and discredit the victim. As it painstakingly reconstructs the night of the crime and its aftermath, Roll Red Roll uncovers the engrained rape culture at the heart of the incident, acting as a cautionary tale about what can happen when teenage social media bullying runs rampant and adults look the other way. The film unflinchingly asks: “why didn’t anyone stop it?” Director Nancy Schwartzman joins us to talk about life in a town where high school football is king, a “boys will be boys” ethos that can easily morph into a rape culture and how a few brave women said no more.
