In this Brewbound Podcast interview, Ray Latif sat down with Ron Nelson, VP of Sales at Arryved, to discuss how the Boulder-based technology company is revolutionizing the craft beverage industry with its brewery-first approach to POS systems and now, funding. Originally founded out of Avery Brewing Co., Arryved was created to solve a challenge that many breweries still face today: finding a point-of-sale solution specifically designed for the unique operations of a taproom or production brewery. Arryved's dedication to the craft community doesn't stop at software. With the launch of Arryved Capital, the company is now helping breweries scale faster by providing access to quick, flexible funding. Whether it's a new tank, an expansion, or more barrels in production, Nelson says the process is fast and intuitive—because the Arryved team already understands the revenue model and rhythms of the businesses they serve. Meet Arryved at CBC Booth #1865 Looking to upgrade your taproom technology or access funding to fuel your next stage of growth? Stop by Booth #1865 at the Craft Brewers Conference and grab a pour courtesy of Arryved's brewing customers!

Synopsis One of the most serious – and daunting – of musical forms is the passacaglia, in which an unchanging melodic pattern repeats itself while other lines of melody offer elaboration and counterpoint to the unwavering tread of the repeated motive.  The result tends to be deliberate, somber, and imposing. The most famous passacaglia in all of Western classical music is the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach, whose birthday we observe on today's date. After Bach's high-water mark, it takes more than a little courage for modern composers to tackle this form.  One of those brave souls who tried – and succeeded – is the American composer Ron Nelson. Nelson's “Passacaglia, “subtitled “Homage on B-A-C-H” utilizes the melodic motive represented in German musical nomenclature by B-flat, A, C, and B natural – in German B natural being represented by the letter H).   Nelson's wind band Passacaglia was was commissioned to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 1992.  It didn't prove an easy task, recalls Nelson:  “It evolved very slowly … The trick was … to make it seamless and inexorable.  Of all my compositions, this is the tightest. I cannot imagine changing one note.” Music Played in Today's Program Ron Nelson (b. 1929) — Passacaglia (Dallas Wind Symphony;Ron Nelson, cond.) Reference Recordings RR-76

Synopsis Rhode Island natives of a certain age wax nostalgic about Rocky Point, a popular family vacation spot on the Narragansett Bay side of Warwick, which operated from the late 1840s until its close in 1995. There was an amusement park with rides like “The Russian Toboggan,” “The Wildcat” and “Cyclone,” for the kids, while mom and pop might opt for a table at the Rocky Point Chowder House. In 1966, the American composer Ron Nelson spent a summer holiday there. “It's such a small state, there aren't that many places to go,” he later recalled. Still, his “Rocky Point Holiday” provided the inspiration – and the title – for a work commissioned by Dr. Frank Bencriscutto for his University of Minnesota Concert Band. “Rocky Point Holiday” was first performed under Bencriscutto's direction on today's date in 1967, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, during the annual convention of the College Band Director's National Association. But the piece really took off – a little like “The Russian Toboggan” perhaps? – when Bencriscutto's band toured the Soviet Union in 1969. Frank wanted an ‘American' piece to open the program,” Nelson recalled, and “Rocky Point Holiday” fit the bill perfectly, and the jaunty score became a classic in the wind band repertory. The National Symphony Orchestra, or NSO, was founded in 1931, and until the opening of the Kennedy Center, had used Constitution Hall as its home base. Leonard Slatkin, the NSO’s Music Director that year, had this to say about the composer: “Nelson is the quintessential American composer. He has the ability to move between conservative and newer styles with ease. The fact that he's a little hard to categorize is what makes him interesting.” For his part, about his “Fanfare for the Kennedy Center,” Ron Nelson said: “It’s a musical epiphany that moves from darkness to light… from idea (French horns) to fruition (full brass).”

On Episode #14 of “CAN YOU HEAR ME, LONG BEACH?” Downtown Long Beach has long struggled to stay relevant, what the kids call "hot." We talked to two people whose business/organization helps validate the direction of the area while gambling that enough people will be attracted to keep everything going. First, Ron Nelson, executive director of the Long Beach Museum of Art, speaks to Asia Morris and Steve Lowery about the museum's new downtown space located at 3rd and Elm. This is the second time the museum has come downtown and Nelson believes conditions are right this time for them to stay. He also thinks artists should charge more for their work. Right? Andy George's Toxic Toast Records is celebrating its fifth year downtown, an experience that seems to have been, shall we say, mixed, given the comically pained way he reacts to the question "How is it dealing with the city?" Still, George has doubled down on his initial investment, opening a performance space—Toxic Toast Theatre—next door to his record store (and his adorable doggy friend, Toast). Asia, Steve and Cheantay Jensen, who profiled Toxic Toast Theatre, spoke with Andy about all of this and why he should be listening to the Monks. YOU ALL SHOULD BE LISTENING TO THE MONKS.

How an experience playing the Persichetti Symphony for Band in high school taught Jack to listen beyond his own part as a percussionist and hear what everyone else in the band was doing. Jack’s first teaching job, how that experience taught him about teaching and dealing with students, and what he misses about teaching at the high school level. The story of the Gavorkna Fanfare and how the “Gavorkna Factor” changed Jack’s career. Ron Nelson continues his stay on Monster Kid Radio as he and Derek wrap up their conversation about the film The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers). Spoiler alert - Ron and Derek love this film! During their discussion, they make if-you-squint-you-might-see-them-too links from this film to The Monster Squad and even kinda-sorta Star Wars. Also, Stephen D. Sullivan calls in to drop some serious Doctor Who knowledge. At the end of this episode, Derek makes a special announcement about the future of Monster Kid Radio. Brain Trust (starts at 4:23)  When you are trying to make a decision about something important or having a disagreement with someone, don’t you sometimes wish you had a scientist with you – a world expert on the topic at hand – to help you out?  In fact, it would be great to have dozens of experts in many fields available, sort of your own personal Brain Trust.  Well, luckily Garth Sundem can help you out with his book called: “Brain Trust,” where he has interviewed 93 of the top scientists in fields like physics, genetics, cognitive science, economics, nutrition, mathematics, and talked to them about very important topics in their fields.  And not the easy topics like Higgs Bosons, Fermat’s Last Theorem, and inflationary cosmology, but rather the much more difficult – and immediately useful – topics like: the best design for a paper airplane, how to survive Armageddon, how to create giant man-eating plants, successful dating techniques (and we don’t mean carbon dating), and how to tell when someone is lying.  Host Joel Parker talks with Garth about his book. Drought (starts at 15:10) Given all the rain and snow on the Front Range and beyond lately, you’d think that Colorado is emerging from the persistent drought, right? But last year was one of the hottest and driest on record in the state and some regions have yet to recover.  Among those who have suffered the most from the persistent drought are farmers and ranchers. In fact, some have sold off cattle and even shuttered their businesses. That said, high prices have boosted profits for some wheat farmers, for instance.  To find out just how badly many farmers and ranchers have been hit by the drought, researchers at Colorado State University have been surveying them annually for a while.  Host Susan Moran talks with Christopher Goemans, a resource economist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Colorado State University, and Ron Nelson, a graduate student also at CSU, about a recent survey of drought conditions and the broader environment.
