Comedian Josh McDonald has been a fixture of the Huntington comedy scene for over a decade, in 2017 he released 'Hero in Town,' West Virginia's first stand-up comedy special. In today's Commonplace, he talks about going to Shepherd University during a period where the music scene there included The Demon Beat, Rozwell Kid and the Fox Hunt, what Huntington comedy was like in the era of the Funny Bone, and how he shapes his material from the stage.
In this week's episode, we unearthed our Gen 2 iPad and traveled back to the decade that many rock n' rollers call the “dark decade”. That's right! We are listening to obscure tracks from the previous decade of the 20-Teens; when Gaga wore a meat dress, we were introduced to Instagram, Indie Rock became a genre, we all got challenged with ice buckets, the host of The Apprentice got elected, and some really great rock n' punk n' metal!New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode we talk about the lost and forgotten gems of the 10s. A decade where music became a true commodity as streaming surpassed all physical and digital media as the way we consume our tunes.Songs this week include:The Bronx - “Style Over Everything” from The Bronx (IV) (2013)Fair To Midland - “Whiskey & Ritalin” from Arrows & Anchors (2011)Rozwell Kid - “Baby's First Sideburns” from Good Graphics EP (2015)The Human Project - “Anti-Pathetic” from Origins (2013)Graveyard - “Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)” from Hisingen Blues (2011)The Carburetors - “Lords Of Thunder” from Laughing In The Face Of Death (2015)Psychopunch - “Long Time Coming” from The Last Goodbye (2010)X Japan - “Born To Be Free” from Born To Be Free – Single (2015) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

I had the opportunity to chat with TJ and Steve of Ghost Town Remedy this week about their "debut" album called "Dry Spell" and so many other topics. This interview included defining the meaning of "Rad Dad Rock" and TJ explaining his father's love for Britney Spears' music. We all agreed on having a hard time listening to Pink Floyd and I admit that I can't listen to the Grateful Dead because of their long songs. I tell TJ and Steve their music sounds like Rozwell Kid. We have an extensive conversation about "Dry Spell." TJ talks about paying tribute to his brother on this album. Steve wrote a song about Taco Bell. TJ and Steve tell the story behind the song and even bring up another time when they spent around $100 at a Taco Bell in Missouri. They also explain how they made an original first album a few years ago, but it had more of a folk sound, which the band has transitioned away from. TJ tells the story behind Therapy and tells us about how he took out his guitar while having an argument with his ex-girlfriend. Steve explains the ultimate meaning behind the album is that it's okay to seek help. The entire album is basically the band's "group therapy." Plus some prize content like meeting at a Christmas concert, their move to Nashville from Virginia, Steve expressing his hate for Ewoks during a Star Wars conversation, the three of us talking about 80's movies, and the band playing at a strip club. My guest today is Justin Francis a multi Grammy nominated Nashville engineer and mixer who I got turned on to from listening to mastering engineer Kim Rosen’s discography when preparing for her interview. Justin Mixes from his log cabin home studio in Ashland City, Tennessee. In just one week, clients can range from Andrea Bocelli to Alice Cooper, and other notable artists include Top 40 bands like Little Big Town; country singers like Kacey Musgraves, Ronnie Milsap, Tyler Childers, Margo Price, and Rodney Crowell; blues legends like Buddy Guy; classic rock stalwarts like Deep Purple; punk legends like Anti-Flag, and rabble-rousers like Rozwell Kid and Diarrhea Planet — streams of which reach more than a million every month. Additionally, Justin’s work with bluegrassers like Special Consensus and Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen earned him two Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album. Today I’m going to ask Justin all about his studio here in Nashville, how he likes to mix a wide variety of music, and what tips we can learn for getting better mixes in our own pro and home studios. It’s 2019: Fairy Bones knows better than to hide their clusterfuck of a life. Fairy Bones uses a new approach to being the punk rock underdogs of the social media age. This is brilliantly displayed in their off-beat content such as their fake Superbowl ad, Halloween skits, and even a complete Mockumentary. Every aspect of Fairy Bones is DIY: their music videos, marketing, independent tour booking, style, and imagery. They have spent 6 years of lighting up the stage as support for acts like Highly Suspect (direct support on 2016 Southwest tour), Starcrawler, Vundabar, The Dollyrots, The Darts, St Lucia, Marcy Playground, Fuel, Mother Mother, Rozwell Kid, and KONGOS. Their sophomore album, “0% Fun” (2018), was praised by the press and their singles, “No One Can Suffer Like I Can”, “8 Ball”, and “Killing Me” landed airtime on ALT AZ 93.3 and Sirius XM. NPR said “0% Fun”, "showcases the band's ability to write catchy ear-worms driven by the unapologetic spirit and vocals of Chelsey Louise” while Java Magazine hailed it as "unsettling, beautiful, and powerful all at once." Impose popped in to declare it “energetic and vibrant.” Fairy Bones released 0% Fun on February 23, 2018 and it’s available now wherever music is sold. They will be releasing singles leading up to their end-of 2019 album, “that’s jazz, bb”. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ All the videos, songs, images, and graphics used in the video belong to their respective owners and I or this channel does not claim any right over them. Not only that, we let him pick the topic. And, surprising no one, he picked breakfast. We rank the breakfast chains, talks about bagels, and learn how dumb old Dan Ozzi got food poisoning.

Mars ain't no place to raise a kid, and West Virginia ain't no place to rock & roll - or, at least, so you'd be lead to believe. Enter Rozwell Kid, whose love of big riffs and old-school powerpop has endeared them to audiences on a global scale. They've just released their fourth album, Precious Art, but back in September 2016 the Kid visited Australia for the very first time as a part of Poison City Weekender. Before another sweaty, show-stopping set as a part of I Love Life at Sydney's Manning Bar, Rozwell Kid's leader Jordan Hudkins sat down to talk of marching bands, college dorms and the one time a $20 payment for a gig was too much. Rozwell Kid's new album, Precious Art, is out now via Cooking Vinyl Australia and SideOneDummy Records.
