Carl Bahner is a mix engineer originally from Lancaster, PA.  Carl has worked with artists like The Wombats, St. Lucia, Joywave, and Hippo Campus. Applying a contemporary slant on the "Wall of Sound" style to his productions, he offers his bright-eyed and open-hearted perspective by creatively framing vocals with imaginative instrumentation. He blends the organic with the synthetic, the digital with the analog, and the modern with the classic—resulting in rich, vibrant music that's full of life. But don't be fooled by Carl's youthful energy and infectious enthusiasm – he's a seasoned pro who's honed his skills on stages around the world. As a performer, he has toured extensively in the US, Canada, and the UK, and his music has been featured in film, television, and even Guitar Hero: Live. Carl has also performed on stage opening for acts like Walk The Moon, X Ambassadors, Charli XCX, Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness, The Wombats, Joywave, Years & Years, They Might Be Giants, Civil Twilight, The Hold Steady, Diarrhea Planet, Cold War Kids, The Gaslight Anthem, The Airborne Toxic Event, The Naked & Famous, and countless others. In addition to his mixing and production work, Carl is an educator passionate about sharing his industry knowledge. He currently teaches music industry courses at Lebanon Valley College. Carl also creates educational content for Produce Like A Pro, focusing on home studio marketing topics. Nashville has long been the hub for all things country music but in the last two decades, transplant rockers like Jack White, the Black Keys, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, Judas Priest's Richie Faulkner and others, have all have made the 615 home. Adding to its growth is the organic blossoms generated via the rock block, cultivating names like Paramore, All Them Witches, Bully, Moon Taxi, The Wild Feathers, The Band Camino, and the guitar extraordinaires that make up Diarrhea Planet. We got caught up with the semi-retired fearsome foursome for their first headlining performance at the Ryman Auditorium ahead of their return to Bonnaroo. We covered why neck humbuckers are useless (but neck dives rule), how the whole band was gifted Klon KTRs, and what each shredator does to stand in and out among their collective guitarmegeddon.Brought to you by D'Addario dBud Earplugs.

California is not happy with Meatball Ron. Fighter jets were scrambled this weekend when a Cessna went off course and crashed into the woods. The bar from Cheers (like the actual wood bar from the set) was auctioned off this weekend. A South Carolina youth pastor was caught filming girls in the bathroom. A pediatrician has been accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill her ex but it turns out she didn't know a hitman. *What happens if you walk into a bank, shout that you're robbing the place, and then say you're just kidding? *A "nano-influence" jumped into the alligator pit at Busch Gardens. *Thanks for listening to the podcast. My guest today is Kevin McMahon of Marcata Recording first started by The Walkmen in 2000 as a purely analog facility located in Harlem inside what had been a Nascar production facility.   Kevin joined in 2003 and took over daily operations, bringing his collection of vintage microphones, preamps, and a long history of studying great live performance from the decade of work as a live sound engineer/designer at the now-defunct but not forgotten venue Brownies in New York City’s East Village.   Doing live sound is where Kevin developed his love of living interactions between musicians, and the ability to recognize the spirit of an artists’ vision and to act with a sense of urgency toward nurturing an environment to allow that vision to be realized at any cost.  Some of Kevin’s credits include: Real Estate, Pile, Parlor Walls, Mr Gnome, The Walkmen, The French Kicks, Diarrhea Planet, and Herzog to name just a few.  Thanks so much to Caleb for making our introduction. Acid Dad first appeared in the New York scene at the outset of 2015. After spending the year self-releasing demos recorded at their studio in upstate New York, the band garnered local praise from the likes of Oh My Rockness, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound and Stereogum. After releasing their debut EP “Let’s Plan a Robbery” in February of 2016, followed by their first sold out show at Baby’s All Right, Acid Dad embarked upon a two month tour of the United States. Fresh off their first tour, which included numerous SXSW performances as well as appearances on Daytrotter, Audiotree and Jam in the Van, the band headed straight back to work in their upstate New York recording studio. While recording, Acid Dad continued to play one-offs alongside their contemporaries including Thee Oh Sees, Diarrhea Planet, Night Beats and White Reaper. At the outset of 2017 the band began writing, demoing and recording with the intention of creating their debut full length. Now part of the Greenway Records family, the album is slated for a Spring 2018 released followed by a world-wide tour. •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet and Steve de Seve; and edited by Emily Boghossian and Khyriel Palmer. LOVELY BAD THINGS "I Just Want You To Go Away" (Burger Records, 2017) LP/CD/CS OUT 8/25/17 www.burgerrecords.com The legend of Lovely Bad Things began in an eerily boring town called La Mirada which is nestled between Los Angeles and Orange County, a fitting place for a band to find solace in music. Brothers Camron (guitar, vocals) and Brayden Ward (drums, vocals) met Lauren Curtius (guitar, vocals), Tim Hatch (guitar) and Wesley Baxter (bass) during their formative years, and joined forces to create a perfect blend of the most infectiously resonant aspects of their alternative and punk predecessors. Lovely Bad Things offer a wild and humorous stage presence while effortlessly shredding the musical prowess they’ve spent the past 8 years cultivating. At one of their shows you’re likely to be struck by Lauren’s distinctly beautiful and powerful voice, Brayden’s vehemently dynamic drumming, the solid and smooth bass of Wesley, and the mind melting trio of guitars shoved forever in your head by Tim, Camron and Lauren. They’ve played countless house shows and local venues, embarked on several cross-country solo tours, as well as with Best Coast and Diarrhea Planet, and have performed festivals including FYF, SXSW and Primavera Sound. Surrounded and influenced by their longstanding tight-knit group of friends, they’ve built their upcoming 2017 album Teenage Grown Ups as an honest and personal depiction of the existential crises that 20-somethings face during young adulthood. The music obsessed Lovely Bad Things’ sound falls within the realm of Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Weezer and the like, and the range of influences in the eclectic array of catchy tracks on Teenage Grown Ups is an element you crave in a band to keep you excited for what they’ll release next. Lovely Bad Things meticulously craft and distribute their music with a respectable DIY ethos. All album artwork and merch are made from scratch by Brayden, and each member of the band contributes in songwriting and multi-instrumentation. Their hard work puts a giant emphasis on the Grown Ups end, while their hilarious and charmingly chaotic energy screams Teenage. Whether you’re in your own young confusion searching for music to make you feel like you’re not alone, a music snob who has a pessimistic outlook on anything post 90’s, or simply a lover of music, Lovely Bad Things should be in heavy rotation.

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 28 This week we host a Killer Soundtrack episode from amidst the jubilant grounds of this year's Forecastle Festival. As we wander around the musical celebration, we continually meet up with our semi-regular co-hosts. So together we discuss the event and along the way build an impressive and wide-ranging soundtrack. And while we recount our evening spent with Sam Smith, we also mention... Unicron, Ben Affleck, being out of control, at the bourbon slushie tent, to this day one of the most tragic character deaths, anyone who sponsors a soccer game, Romania, on-stage having fun, Joel Schumacher, old person face, robot smoke comes out of their mouths and they fall down dead, facing your cell phone the wrong way, striving for crass commercialization, we're waiting to hear the destruction reports out of Switzerland any day now, better in a bar, cthulhu-level horror, south to drop off moron, everyone looks good, because they feel good, Reservoir Dogs, your boss was afraid to hurt your feelings by firing you, split-screen, I don't know if I'm getting older... or music is getting worse, that work of genius, young up and coming actresses, cheezy 80's music, saves the day... and promptly dies, henna for tweens, water is like 85% of existence, a youth-infested music festival, that's how we process music now... soundtracks and video games, acutely plebeian peasants, Diarrhea Planet, a Lovecraftian symphany... about a a Lovecraftian robot... from the most Lovecraftian of giant robot movies, more female-centric films, it was like that scene from Jaws, even more questions about Batman v. Superman, very aware of itself, as I've been told by a guy who has a can of Nitrogen in his back seat for the purpose of bourbon freezing, grunge settling in, body glitter, we could be like a bunch of Nascar drivers... except we're podcasters, they just don't wanna stop, that Christmas where the Germans and the Americans stopped shooting at each other... and played soccer, Wim Wenders, punishment for Amy Winehouse's dad,  Dope, listening as well as watching film, as seen on TV, if you are from their town, unrequited love, polite but not nice, Nightwing, St. Elmo's Fire, bright red horror, smashing me back in a lovely way, snare ticky tack, growing up Springsteen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, action happening in two different spots, taking a lot of weird risks, someone came up from behind him, things being out of his hands, that was in a Tony Hawk game, Lucio Fulci, storming out, the leaker, you're not over it if you're still saying it on the microphone, and remember kids... stay hydrated and use sunscreen. "If you use a song really, really well in a scene, that song will remind people of your scene for the rest of their lives." For more info on the fest, go to: http://forecastlefest.com/

Better in Headphones

Apple Music just launched. I was hoping to host BiH there but it won't work. Too bad. Would anyone be interested in me sharing playlists, albeit unmixed? Personally I like BiH because of the transitions between tracks, and not only for the tracks themselves. I've always sought to enhance the material via their placement in a larger mix. And I still strive for that and still think it is worthwhile. But if you think playlists of raw tracks would also be good (because BiH will never die! 6 years old this September), then comment below. The thing is there are plenty of great songs out there and they don't all make it onto a BiH mix because they don't fit. They are still no less great. So I could do that. If you want. Or even if you don't, I suppose. There are some caveats of course, namely that any song would need to be available on Apple Music. Most of what I include here is either prerelease or self-released, so not available. But sometimes I intentionally avoid big songs even though I love them, so they'd get coverage in a playlist. I'm thrilled to include my friend Nick on this one, who also handles lead vocals for a band I am in called Wild Stallions (absolutely no relation to Bill & Ted). Nick is awesome, in both music and in life,  and I listened to his cover of Miss Ohio about 30 times. You should, too. And if you are an Apple Music subscriber, check out his stuff over there.I am blown away by almost every track on this one (the new Mercury Rev, Viet Cong, LIDS, Beach House, Gordi... Just, wow). As always, enjoy loudly through the best speakers or headphones you can possibly afford. Pawn some stuff and upgrade for this one. BiH 49 feat Nick Gallant, Mercury Rev, Diarrhea Planet, Moon King, Viet Cong, Beach House, Aces, LIDS, Gordi, HAERTS, Flor

I've been making these mixes for over 4 years  now and pretty much every year I make some sort of statement about how end-of-year lists are stupid. I just can't stand the precision of a numbered, ordered list of music. But recently a friend asked me what my favorite songs of this year were (after I said I wouldn't give a year-end list of albums), so I went through all the BiH mixes from this year and picked my favorite songs. Here they are, in absolutely no particular order. This was an interesting year from music. It was not dominated by 'the great album', though there were some great EPs (Doss, Ana Caprix, Diarrhea Planet)). Mostly, this was a great year for songs. I had a few albums I got into this year (Real Estate, Haerts, Fucked Up, Temples...I am not counting the new Panda Bear because officially it hasn't come out yet, and until I have the vinyl it doesn't count), but really I am so wrapped up in making these mixes that I paid more attention to the great songs everyone was putting out rather than the handful of great albums that hit the shelves. But really, if you are only going to listen to 1 BiH mix per year, then this is the one for 2014. I have never produced a year-end mix before but I think this is something I'll start doing from now on. All of these songs have appeared on BiH mixes previously, so for the few avid listeners out there, you'll recognize all of this. That's okay. This should be a fun mix for all. I definitely noticed that I have  given greater weight to music that came out later in the year, and that's possibly because of how I went about accumulating music in the 2nd half of the year (and ended up with a better selection), or maybe it's just because I already overplayed my favorites from earlier in the year. At any rate, here they are in honestly no particular order (or even any particular number of songs; I only decided to pick 1 hours' worth of my favorites from the last 12 months...we ended up with a 'top 15' mix). I only wanted to make a mix that included my favorites and actually had some decent flow. Enjoy! And Happy New Year... See you in 2015.BiH Favoritest of the Year: 2014 feat. (in order for once): John Southworth, Moodoid, Desert Stars, Breakfast in Fur, Shocking Pinks, Temples, Sucre, Suburban Living, Doss (remixed by Ana Caprix), Rubblebucket (remixed by Body Language), Pepa Knight, Milo Greene, Morning Harvey, Betty Who, Ana Caprix
