Let Me Introduce You is a podcast hosted by Graham Veth, Katie Kubert and Ashley Krohn. We’ve known each other nearly 20 years (starting back in film school) and have stayed close friends ever since. We know...everything about one another and have far, far too much in common. Except, our taste in movies. Seriously, there is very little overlap…. Each week, one of us will introduce the others to one of our favorites. The catch is that one of us has to be seeing it for the first time. From Troop Beverly Hills to Hellraiser; Clue to Nightmare on Elm Street; Barbarella to Step Up 2: The Streets, no movie is off the table (even if we find it’s not our cup of tea…). New episodes drop every Thursday, let us introduce you to Let Me Introduce You! After a long hiatus (sorry!), we are back with the John Waters classic "Serial Mom!" Katie is introduced to Kathleen Turner's Beverly Sutphin who just thinks everyone should behave properly...and if they don't, she takes care of them! We also catch up on what we've been doing as well as recent media we've enjoyed. Sit back, relax...and don't forget to recycle! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We are BACK (again)! Did you miss us? In this episode in our "Movies for Vanna" series, Ashley introduces Katie to the 1977 animated version of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit!" Also, we got to see each other...in person! The team debriefs their recent reunion in LA completing with meeting the one and only Vanna and our journey to get new piercings. Ashley then dives into what scared her from The Hobbit as a kid and Graham just wishes the hobbits were more attractive, ya know? Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
What's that? A new episode (and new SEASON) of LMIY in your podcast feeds? Believe it! After an extended hiatus, the gang is back to catch up on what has happened over the past 9 months, both in life and what media we've enjoyed. We then launch into our new theme "Movies for Vanna" (in celebration of Katie's new bundle of joy) with her family favorite, 1997's Mouse Hunt! Katie gives us a rundown of why this was a VHS staple in her family's life and Ashley and Graham delight in the pratfalls that befall Nathan Lane and Lee Evans as they battle a cute mouse. Other topics: Katie's Titanic obsession, M3GAN gays, and general merriment! We're so happy to be back, friends. More to come! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's our SEASON FINALE EPISODE...and we're bringing you, our dear listeners, two very special offerings -- 1) a 1996 film that NONE of us had ever seen, starring our podcast's patron saint, Ms. Tori Spelling, and 2) The Second Annual LMIY Awards! So please join us for this made for TV movie that really is just the epitome of fun trash. Tori Spelling plays the titular character Laurel -- a senior in college, star of her track team, a real whiz in the classroom -- as she falls in love with sexy stranger Kevin. But when Kevin's revealed to be the killer from the opening salvo of this "film", our dear Tori is in for a wild ride of relationship abuse, stalking, and all sorts of dangerous insanity. How many people are killed in this movie? What does this film and Friday the 13th have in common? WILL TORI SLEEP WITH DANGER? You'll just have to listen and find out! Then, we host our second annual LMIY Awards, going through our entire 15-episodes of season 3 to choose Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Picture, and, of course, bestow our honorary Tori Spelling Award for the year. There are definitely some surprises and upsets in this awards season, not the least of all when Graham insists on granting himself an award as well :) (all the podcasters got awards, don't worry). So make sure you have AAA and get ready to run REALLY awkwardly for this RIDICULOUS movie! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
How do you follow up one of the most successful musicals in modern memory? How about you cast relative unknowns in lead roles and get them started with a 1/2 finished script that makes ZERO sense, and only just barely connects to its source material? YES, THIS MOVIE IS GOD AWFUL...but it has earned its cult status over the past almost forty years...so join us as Ashley introduces Katie to a beloved childhood favorite, and the final entry in our SEQUEL SENSATION theme -- 1982's Grease 2. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer in her first leading role, this film picks up two years after Olivia Newton John and John Travolta hand jived their way through Rydell High -- focusing on our NEW CLASS of Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Michelle plays Stephanie, the leader of the Pink Ladies who is just so OVER dating T-Birds and is looking for a new man...a "cool rider". Enter new kid in town, Michael Carrington (played by Maxwell Caulfield, aka REX MANNING) -- Australian Sandy's cousin from the original film, although he is inexplicably British. He sets his sights on winning Stephanie's heart by learning everything there is to learn about motorcyclin' - and takes on a secret persona as said "cool rider". This film then gets nuts with wacky songs (hello, even if you hate this film, the song "Reproduction" is a must) insane dance numbers, and an almost 2 hour runtime. We also discuss how this film affected Ashley's entire fashion aesthetic all throughout her life, the gang's favorite musicals, a new mini-Let Me Introduce You, and a preview of our SEASON FINALE in 2 weeks. So put on your motorcycle hat and enjoy one of our more divisive episodes - 'cuz come on, we've got a rep to protect! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In one of the countless billions of galaxies in the universe, lies a medium-sized start, and one of its satellites, a green and insignificant planet, is now dead. We, your dear podcasters, are delighted to swerve HARD from last episode's heartwarming story with a film about political ruin, dystopian society, nuclear fear, religious zealotry...and sexy shirtless men with an obvious Katie pick for our SEQUEL SENSATION theme -- 1970's Beneath the Planet of the Apes! An army of civilized apes...a fortress of radiation-crazed super humans...Earth's final battle is about to begin--beneath the atomic rubble of what was once the city of New York. So listen in as we subjugate Ashley and Graham to his over 50 year film (they both paid attention-ish) and talk about how this sequel got made into one of the world's most well-known franchises (when franchises were barely a thing) -- despite a near bankruptcy and literally everything going wrong from the start. We also chat about New Wave Science fiction, this film's SUB-PAR make up effects, the absolute sexiness of lead actor James Franciscus (aka the Caffeine-free, diet Coke version of Charlton Heston) and how you follow up the intensely mind-blowing ending of the first film (and then, how do you make a third movie?!). We also have TWO mini-Let Me Introduce Yous and discuss what intelligent animals we would want ruling the planet in the future. Join us as we reveal our innermost selves to you! Hey, there. The world has been a lot lately. But if we're kind and polite, the world will be right. So why don't you make a cuppa, grab yourself a marmalade sandwich, and join us not only for an unBEARably delightful film, but the launch of our new theme -- SEQUEL SENSATIONS! Graham has been singing the virtues of this film for at least five episodes now, so it's finally time for him to introduce Katie and Ashley to the charmingly disarming Paddington 2. Starring a venerable who's who of Brittan's finest actors, including Hugh Grant (who you obv know), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter's Dolores Umbridge), Julie Walters (Harry Potter's Mrs. Weasley), Ben Whishaw (James Bond's Q), Jim Broadbent< Jessica Hynes, Brendan Gleason AND SO MANY MORE...this is truly a children's film filled with joy, prestige, beauty and challenge. Not often do all 3 of your podcasters agree on a film, but all three completely fell in love with every aspect of this treasure. We also discuss children's films in today's society, other sequels who surpased their originals in popularity, and a special Mini Let Me Introduce You from this week's host (who we must say has never had any complaints about his Mr and Mrs Botty-Cheek). We're ending our EXCUSE ME, WHAT?! Series of films we JUST CAN'T FRIGGING BELIEVE the others haven't seen with a big one...a GIANT WHIFFED MISS in Katie's film education, 1986's Labyrinth. This film is a seminal work in the canon of Jim Henson, and showcases some of the amazing things that puppetry can do on film...from something as tiny as a wee little worm who offers you tea with the missus, to a swamp filled with buttholes, or even a collection of weird bird fire things who switch arms and legs and heads (while singing). And who better to introduce us to this film (other than Graham, well-known Henson lover) but our special guest -- actor, story animator, former Pixar employee and theater kid to the bone (and obv. friend of the pod) Mr. Kyle McDaniel! Kyle lures your favorite podcasters in with tales of the Goblin King aka David Bowie, reading hidden clues around set design and dress, the beauty of Jennifer Connelly, and why his favorite character in all of this fantasy madness is Hoggle. In a film that bases its story on how much something means to you once its gone, we willingly get lost in the joyful maze that is Labyrinth. So join us in the oubliette (we haven't been able to get out) and get ready for DANCE MAGIC, DANCE! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's not often we visit the 1950s, but for Ashley's pick in our judgement-free theme (we promise), EXCUSE ME, WHAT?! -- films we cannot believe the others have seen -- we take a romantic trip on an Italian cruise, right into the hearts of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in 1957's An Affair to Remember. Our two main characters fall in love (OBV) on a cruise ship while involved with other people, so they give themselves six months to sort their lives out and promise to meet on the closest thing to heaven, the Empire State Building. But then a HORRIBLE ACCIDENT...and not to get emotional, but Graham was OVERWHELMED with joy for this movie. Katie...well, you'll just have to listen to find out. Your three favorite podcasters also discuss the fashion, the inspired improvisational style of acting in this film, and another Mini-Let Me Introduce You. And in the truest nature of this affair...DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE. Winter is cold for those with no warm memories, so cuddle up with this delightful tryst. We, your beloved podcasters, pride ourselves on our film knowledge and expertise. However, there are some movies that have simply escaped our cultural lexicon...some of them are even BEST PICTURE WINNERS. I bet you'd say "Excuse me, WHAT?! YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS?!" Well, you wouldn't be the only one...so we proudly present our second entry into the MOVIES WE CAN'T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN'T SEEN with our first Best Picture Winner, 1984's Amadeus. Katie and Graham ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE...and while we can't find the Theatrical Release anywhere online, we dive into the almost 3-hour directors cut and are BEYOND SURPRISED that Ashley made it through in once piece as her first viewing! We also chat a bit about our time playing instruments growing up, and a very special mini-MINI Let Me Introduce You. Well...there it is. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We're welcoming the new year with shame!! Enter our newest theme, Excuse me, WHAT?! Films we just CAN'T BELIEVE you haven't seen. And we're starting with one of our WHITE WHALES, the 1988 classic romantic BUSINESS WOMAN COMEDY, Working Girl. This is the one movie that started the whole podcast idea, and a film Graham holds so dear to his heart that he was terrified of showing it to Ashley and Katie. Starring the gorgeous Melanie Griffith, the delicious Harrison Ford, a pitch-perfect-bitch Sigourney Weaver, and the ethereal Joan Cusack, this film follows Staten Islander Tess McGill as works her way through lethal, 1980s Wall Street...aiming to be more than "just a secretary." When her seemingly supportive boss breaks her leg on a ski trip, Tess discovers her superior was aiming to undercut her talent and steal her idea for a deal. So Tes cons her way into a meeting with the lovely Jack Trainer to make an even lovelier partnership, both on and off the trading floor. Directed by Mike Nichols, this was truly enjoyable for everyone...so while your favorite podcasters might not be steak, you CAN order this podcast right into your ears! We also talk a bit about our favorite new media over the holiday break and have some excellent recs. Just let us know if we can get you anything...coffee, tea, me? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Hallmark Christmas Movies...what better way to get into the holiday spirit than overdosing on hot chocolate, snowball fights, caroling, and literally every trope you could possibly associate with Christmas? Join Graham and Ashley as they introduce Katie to the SHEER WONDER that is Hallmark, starting with Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater -- a new film for the 2020 Hallmark slate. This story stars Ashley Williams, best known for How I Met Your Mother, as a newly single mom and school teacher preparing to spend Christmas alone, and Niall Matter as said man in said sweater, as they fall in love during the most romantic time of year. Also, as a special treat, the podcasters try their hand at writing their own Hallmark Christmas movies for each other...so get ready to jingle your Christmas balls and tangle your tinsel for this joyful delight! The podcast which you are about to listen to is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of three best friends, in particular Ashely Krohn and her older brother, (and our special guest) Justin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young(ish). But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected nor would they have wished to view as much of the mad and macabre as they were to watch on film that day. For them an idyllic winter movie double-feature became a nightmare. The events of that viewing were to lead to the discovery of two of the most bizarre due of films in the annals of American history. For our final installment in our SIBLINGS theme, we are honored to welcome film and television editor, Ashley's brother Justin to the pod, as he introduces Graham and Katie to 1974's Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it's abysmal sequel, 1986's Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Starting with the horror film that gives a new meaning to the word "disturbing", the original classic introduced audiences to slasher icon Leatherface as we do a deep dive into the wonderful world of the horror genre. Then we take a HARD LEFT to discuss the camp, 80s coke-fueled insanity that is the Dennis Hopper-lead sequel where Leatherface makes his return, along with the rest of his revolting family. We chat a bit about what a film/tv editor does, some of Justin's past credits, and what it was like in the Krohn household when Ashley was FORCED to view one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema as a mere preteen (note: it was not either of these two movies). So rev up the chainsaw, try not to eat any chili beforehand, and pull up a seat at our dinner table for our last episode of 2022! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Ever wonder why Graham is the way he is (aka utterly perfect?) Well, your favorite podcasters invite his older sister Stephanie on to our show to talk about the very movie that shaped them as kids (them, and most likely no one else, based on the box office) -- as the two Veths introduce Katie and Ashley to the WONDER that is 1989's Teen Witch. Drama, romance, comedy, musical, fantasy...this movie has it all! Starring Robin Lively as high school "nerd" Louise who, upon her 16th birthday, develops special witch powers! And who better to welcome her into her coven than pint-sized powerhouse, Zelda Rubenstein -- an ersatz fairy godmother if there ever was one. Will Louise cast a spell to make her (and Graham's) crush Brad (played by Dan Gauthier) fall in lovewith her? Or perhaps take on the essence of a pop star to become the most popular girl in school? Or maybe she just turns her little brother (brought to magical life by Joshua John Miller) into a dog. Who knows what's possible in this mishmash of razzle dazzle! We also dive into some of the Veth family childhood favorites, as well as Stephanie's 9 year old daughter's very insightful opinions on her mom and uncle's film tastes. Could this movie be any more supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting? Who would really ever wanna go and TOP THAT? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
There are those in our lives who know us through thick and thin...who get our dumb senses of humor (because hey, they have the exact same ones) and laugh at the same ridiculous things you did when you were 10 years old. They grew up on the same crap, watched the same movies (whether they wanted to or not) and have the same pop culture blind spots...they're OUR SIBLINGS! So to kick off a theme very close to our hearts, we're starting with Katie's brother Zak, and introducing a seminal work of the 1990s -- a movie that stayed true to their parents ignoring film ratings, a real Huckelberry, 1993's Tombstone. With an all-star cast (hello Kurt Russell, Bill PAXTON (not Pullman!!), Sam Elliott, and of course, the incredible Val Kilmer) this post-Unforgiven western was a STAPLE (Stable? get it? it's a horse joke.) in the Kubert household. So if you, dear listener, were ever interested in why Katie gravitates towards the movies she does, get the inside scoop from the man who was there at the beginning, and has the same weird sense of film taste that she does (more action! more violence!). So pop those headphones on and join us for some gun-slingin' fun...you're a daisy if you do! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's the spooky season, and for you, dear listeners...this is no TRICK, we have a TREAT just for you...after two full seasons where Katie vamped about practical Special Effects for film and television, we thought we'd bring in a PRO to introduce your favorite podcasters to the ins and outs of prosthetic make up, mold making, casting, and the art behind making things creepy...so we're honored and humbled to have SFX artist Jeremy Selenfriend, owner of Monster In My Closet SFX shop, on the show to introduce us to a film that scared HIM as a kid...the 1992 Clive Barker classic, Candyman. Jeremy is known for his Emmy-nominated work on Boardwalk Empire, and has also worked on a million other well-known projects like The Blacklist, Men in Black III, Gotham, Elementary, Royal Pains, Orange is the New Black, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, The King of Staten Island and so many more. So won't you JOIN US as he takes the gang into the modern oral folklore of The Candyman on the Near North Side of Chicago...inside a dilapidated housing project known as Cabrini-Green, where a man with a hook for a hand and a chest of bees waits. Starring the incredible Tony Todd (you remember him from our Night of the Living Dead remake episode) and Virginia Madsen (of Sideways fame), this film really breaks down modern day horrors in ways none of us were expecting...especially for a film that's almost 30 years old. We also give some great horror film recs for the Halloween season, and do a primer on SFX in today's film and television industry. So won't you BE(E) OUR VICTIM? Just press play, stare into the mirror, and say it 5 times...Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman...... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Ah...the summer of 1995. When Hugh Grant's hair was still floppy, the world was mere moments away from making Divine Brown a household name, Tom Arnold was still considered funny enough to be cast in something, and a wee BU School of Performing Arts '83 graduate was starring in her first Hollywood romantic comedy, the subject of our final BU ALUMS theme, Nine Months. Highlighting the sheer beauty of a very 90s (and oddly homosexual-free) San Francisco, this film follows couple Samuel and Rebecca as they find out they are unexpectedly going to be parents. Samuel, brought to life by the over-the-top performance of Hugh Grant, is a commitment-phobic, selfish child psychologist with a Peter Pan-complex who, ironically, hates kids, and obviously cannot provide his girlfriend Rebecca, played by goddess Julianne Moore, the support she needs as a soon-to-be mother. She finds this support and friendship with new friends Marty and Gail Dwyer (played by an unbearable Tom Arnold and an as-always delightful Joan Cusack), while Samuel seeks advice and comfort from fellow playboy and friend, Sean Fletcher (a role Jeff Goldblum excels at). We've got SOME THOUGHTS on this movie, and while it might be a glorious example of redhead representation (which our podcaster Ashley is always in great support of) it's...not really great anywhere else. OH, did we mention Robin Williams is also in this film? Who needs an enema? No, uh, a pedicure? No wait, an epitaph? IT'S EPIDURAL, ASSHOLE, FOR OUR LAST FILM FROM BU ALUMS! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Graham continues our theme of FILMS FROM BU ALUMS with a CFA '79 Graduate KNOWN for her action roles...or rather...just the one. Geena Davis, a woman for the people, tried her best to advance female action stars with her role as Samantha Caine in 1996's action/crime/spy Thriller, The Long Kiss Goodnight. Written by action industry stalwart Shane Black (a script purchased for a record breaking $4 mil), the story opens with an idyllic suburban mother and teacher, Samantha -- a woman who woke up on a New Jersey beach 8 years ago with no memory and pregnant with her daughter, Caitlin. After a very lovely and Hallmark-worthy Christmas party, Samantha is injured in a car crash -- a crash which stirs up memories of her past, and memories of a blonde, badass smoker named Charly, Samantha's alter-identity. Meanwhile, an incomparable and charming Samuel L. Jackson plays private detective Mich Hennessy, a man Samantha hired to uncover her past, and a man who winds up getting the crap kicked out of him mercilessly this entire film. Mitch and Sam team up with Charly's old boss (played by Brian Cox) to uncover a secret plot between the CIA and an organization known as Deadalus -- former villains Charley was investigating before her self-induced amnesia, led by dreamy Craig Bierko (another BU attende!). So join your favorite BU alum podcasters here as we discuss Queen Geena's valiant attempt to forward women in the action genre, and how we think that whatever Samantha's memory is attempting to dislodge, much like Brian Cox's dog who has been licking its asshole for the past hour), is either gone for good, or there to stay. Wouldn't you agree? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
WE'RE BAAAAAACK! For our season 3 opener, we thought we'd go back to our roots...your three favorite podcasters, as wee babes, were once film and television students at Boston University. And what better way to celebrate that legacy than highlighting movies from BU Alums?! And what better alum to start with than Katie's favorite 1962 CFA graduate, Faye Dunaway? And what better film to highlight than the one that arguably killed her career, 1981's Mommie Dearest?! A bitter, harrowing look into the COMPLETE INSANITY that was SCREEN QUEEN Joan Crawford's life from 1939-1977, written from the point of view of her first adopted daughter, Christina Crawford. Based on the best-selling book of the same title, watch as Joan overcomes the insane amount of obstacles thrown at her on a daily basis: Children who just REFUSE to give all their toys away on their birthdays, who make ungodly messes, who won't help chop down rose bushes in the middle of the night, who won't eat rare steak when it's been left out for days, who have the AUDACITY to be anything more than FANS, boyfriends and husbands who have NEEDS, studios who won't give Joan her due respect...all this, and (say it with us) NO. WIRE. HANGERS. EVER! Welcome, dear listeners, to season 3 of Let Me Introduce You...this ain't our first time at the rodeo... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Water. It is essential for life. But it is also essential for CINEMATIC CHAOS in the Kevin Costner H20 vehicle, the 1995 KING OF ALL FLOPS, Waterworld. Ashley introduces your favorite podcasters to the mother of all aquatic calamities...starring the world's most notorious gill-ed mut-o, Kevin Costner as The Mariner. A man who is truly an island, he sails the oceans of Earth -- a planet long since submerged when its polar ice caps melted -- in search of...more isolation. Until he meets a woman (Jeanne Tripplehorn...hello, The Firm or Basic Instinct) and her ward (Napoleon Dynamite's own Tina Majorino), the latter of which has a tattoo on her back rumored to be the map to DRY LAND. In hot pursuit (and we mean that in the literal sense) and fueled by cigarettes (also in the literal sense) is the film's savior...or rather, lead villain, Dennis Hopper (listen, if you don't know who Dennis Hopper is that's your problem) who runs his team of Smokers with three goals in mind...get the child, find dry land, and pillage!! This film is too much and not enough all at once, and with only ONE MONSTER in the entire movie, Katie, Graham and Ashley are left...well, quite dry. Join us for the final episode in our IT'S A DISASTER theme, as well as our season ender, where we host the first LET ME INTRODUCE YOU AWARDS! We're bringing down the house (and literally everything else, because duh, it's all under water) with this one...so come hear us talk about coffee enemas, because NOTHING IS FREE IN WATERWORLD. OK, so you're a film executive in 1991 trying to make a blockbuster hit. You have your bankable action star (Bruce Willis in the title role), your beautiful global locations (Rome! New York! Budapest!), your dastardly villain duo (Richard E. Grant and Sandra Bernhard), wild sets and massive explosions. But then you keep adding...music that makes no sense, actors who just dont...act (or do the opposite and OVERact), slapstick "jokes", weird sound effects, a conspiracy theory plot with so many twists and turns and double crosses it stops making sense, the FBI, the CIA, the Vatican (please, why are you still adding things), a love affair with a nun, AN ART HEIST, LEONARDO DAVINCI, AND A PLAN TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD BY INSTILLING FINANCIAL CHAOS? Seriously, how much do you think that would cost? Spoiler: a lot. Do you think it would be a successful film? Spoiler: Nope. Join your favorite podcasters as we dive into the Bruce Willis (ego)driven film Hudson Hawk, the third installment of our IT'S A DISASTER! Theme. We also cast ourselves as pivotal MTV-IA subversive, candybar-themed secret agents and talk a lot about Girl Scout cookies. It's either this, or hey, you could be swingin' on a star... Meow meow meow, meow, meow...meow? Meow, meow! (I should really just write the whole summary that way)...but no really, folks, we're mewling about one of the biggest box office CAT-astrophes in recent MEMORY for the second episode in our IT'S A DISASTER! theme...have you guessed what it is yet? Rebel Wilson eating a bunch of human Rockette-esque cockroaches and then unzipping her own cat skin? James Corden rolling around in garbage while wearing spats? Idris Elba performing magic tricks and sending anyone who gets in his way to a barge? Taylor Swift drugging everyone? Nonsense words and names and songs with no rhyme (literally) or reason? Some of the worst digital SFX in history? DO THESE SOUND LIKE NORMAL THINGS? Well, they are at least viewed that way in the 2019 musical, Cats. Join Graham as he introduces this CAT-aclysmic failure to the gang, espouses on his love of Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat, and makes Katie and Ashley come up with their own Jellicle Cat names. There's a lot to unpack here...so pull up a saucer of milk and join us. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Some films are big bets for studios...they put a lot of money, time and talent behind them, and then SOMETHING goes wrong and the film just FAILS. No rhyme or reason. THAT IS NOT THE CASE for the first film in our IT'S A DISASTER theme -- 1997's Sundance black comedy darling, The House of Yes. This BONKERS film has very. clear. reasons. for not succeeding -- even with Miramax and the great Aaron Spelling behind it. Starring Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton, Freddie Prinze Jr., and the unofficial mascot of our podcast, Ms. Tori Spelling, this film is very much a play on screen -- and our wonderful special guest Ryan Davis (an actual Yale School of Drama Graduate!) introduces Graham and Katie to this taboo box-office flop, which holds a special place in his heart as a pinnacle of "women on the edge" films. You'll be shocked and yet CANNOT LOOK AWAY from the punchy, pithy, ping-pong dialogue and subversive comedic cues...so join us as we dive into this Jackie Kennedy-themed (sort of?) hurricane! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Some movies live forever in our brains as absolute sheer genius -- a seminal work of comedic timing, improv, and chemistry. But when you've already seen The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking, where do you go from there? You go one louder. You need that extra push over the cliff to eleven. You need This Is Spinal Tap. The 1984 cult classic Rockumentary lives in infamy -- created by the very stars who bring it to life, Rob Reiner (making is directorial debut!), Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest are responsible for this metal masterpiece. Join your favorite podcasters as we bring our LET'S GET MUSICAL theme to a close, and also get a bit nutty ourselves (don't believe us? Listen as Graham sings the entire opening theme of Head of the Class...yes, you're right, it is just instrumental). This is a beautiful, beautiful episode...and we've called it "Lick My Love Pump." Enjoy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the world of movies, there are some lines that are baked into the cultural vernacular -- FEED ME, SEYMOUR! is definitely one of them. So it's with great pride and pleasure and JOY that Katie introduces the third movie in our Let's Get MUSICAL theme, the utterly charming 1986 Little Shop of Horrors. This has all the pod's favorite attributes -- incredible production, stunning sets, the peak of comedic talent...listen to this: RICK MORANIS, STEVE MARTIN, JOHN CANDY, BILL MURRAY, CHRISTOPHER GUEST, LEVI STUBBS, TISHA CAMPBELL, ELLEN GREENE...all in one movie. You wanna watch something truly delightful? Put this movie on and then listen to our podcast and BE HAPPY FOR A HOT MINUTE. Graham, Katie and Ashley also chat about puppets (obv.), Broadway musicals turned into movies, and a mini-Let Me Introduce you, so what are you waiting for?! IT'S SUPPERTIME! 1980 was a time of joy. It was a time of feathered hair, glittering light shows, disco, roller skating, Olivia Newton-John, bizarro animation, a million costume changes, Electric Light Orchestra, stories that make very little sense and of course, it was a time of Xanadu. Graham introduces Katie and Ashley to the stunning fever-dream that is this movie for our second installment of LET'S GET MUSICAL -- starring Olivia Netwon-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck (from Warriors fame) in a plot that barely clocks in as competent, but with a soundtrack from ELO that will go down in the annals of history. The gang also talks a bit about their first Broadway shows, and we have a special Mini-Let-Me-Introduce-You this week, too! WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?! Worried this might be a "Xana-DON'T?" You're wrong...it's a XANA-DU!! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We promised to bring the thunder in Season 2...and here it COMES!! We're proud to host the definitive audio experts on Jack White to introduce our new theme -- LET'S GET MUSICAL -- movies all about music. And they've decided to introduce Graham and Ashley to the 2007 Rock-u-Mock-u-Mentary, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. With Jack White in a guest role as Elvis Presley, the story follows southern boy Dewey Cox, played by the insanely talented John C. Reilly, on his path to rock and roll stardom through the 50s, 60s, 70s to present day in this Walk the Line spoof. John C. Reilly also has released several recordings (bluegrass and otherwise) on Jack White's record label and performed with Jack live throughout the years, and luckily the Third Men Podcast hosts Paul and James Kaminiski are here to educate us on all things rock 'n' roll and dive into super deep music nerdery. So grab your machete and get ready, because you're definitely gonna want a part of this shit... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Soft, orange sunsets...cool river breeze...candlelight, teenage romance that spans generations, and a forbidden love that bridges social systems, this movie has all your Nicholas Sparks romance tropes AND MORE. Ashley takes our L-O-V-E theme to it's ultimate pinnacle, introducing Katie to the 2004 romantic drama, The Notebook. Starring Ryan Gosling (scoring a 2 out of 3 for dreaminess) and Rachel McAdams (3 out of 3) as two star-crossed lovers, we follow their story through the generations...you want romance? HERE IT IS. OH GOD, IT'S EVERYWHERE. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
A young New Zealand woman meets a charmingly befuddled young bachelor and she is given a sign that they are destined to be together. A romance quickly blooms between the two lovers, and amidst pain, heartbreak and adversity, they overcome all obstacles in their way IN THIS COMPLETE GOREFEST. In the second episode of our L-O-V-E theme, Katie introduces Graham and Ashley to the 1992 Peter Jackson film, Dead Alive (aka Braindead). Notorious for being the bloodiest film ever made (measured in liters of blood used in production) this is one of the most over-the-top, ridiculously insane movies we have ever watched on the pod. It's the third film from Peter Jackson, who co-wrote it with Fran Walsh and Stephen Sinclair (the former who went on to share an Oscar with Peter for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King)...get ready for some of the grossest (and STUNNING) special effects, animatronics and puppet work we've ever seen. IT'S TIME TO KICK ASS FOR THE LORD in this Katie-style romance film... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
LOVE IS IN THE AIRRRRR...and we're ready to launch into our new theme with the 1999 gay rom-com, Trick. Starring Christian Campbell (Neve Campbell's brother!) as Gabriel, a twenty-something New Yorker who hasn't quite figured out who he is (both as a person and as a gay man) as he meets smoldering go-go boy Mark, played by John Paul Pitoc, and the two try to find a place to hook up for just one night...when they're lambasted by jerkbag roommates, annoying, cock-blocking best friends (hello, Tori Spelling! In the role she was BORN TO PLAY), ex-lovers, and a drag queen with one of the BEST MONOLOGUE MOMENTS WE'VE EVER SEEN (thank you, Miss Coco Peru!). This movie is adorable and brings back a lot of NYC memories for Graham and Katie as the gang talks about what life is like in your twenties. It's a one-night showcase to bring the house down! Special guest Angie Bullaro introduces the gang to our fourth film in the BOOKIT theme -- book to film adaptations, the 2008 teen romance and cultural juggernaut, Twilight. Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner...you know what, if you don't know what this movie is you need to escape from whatever rock you've been living under for the past 13 years. It's a wonder Graham and Katie had never seen it...and who better to introduce them to the wonder of sparkly vampires than author, actress, writer, filmmaker, producer, and sheer delight, Angie Bullaro? The gang catches up with Angie about her recent book release, Breaking the Ice, which tells the inspiring true story of Manon Rhéaume, the first and only woman to play a game in the National Hockey League. So hold on tight Spider Monkeys for this wild and joyous ride! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
GET READY TO FEEL ALL THE FEELINGS...this is an intense one, guys. Ashley chooses the third installment in our BOOKIT! - Book to film adaptation series with 2012's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, who also authored the book in 1999. Starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller, we follow the story of loner freshman Charlie in his first year back at school after his best friend committed suicide. Befriending two outcast seniors, Charlie finds his people, and we get a film that is so authentic to the high school experience, we podcasters wind up reminiscing about how tough adolescence can truly be...and what it means to feel infinite. In the second episode in our BOOK IT! series, we talk about the 2007 blockbuster film I am Legend, the third screen adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic 1954 book of the same name. Starring Will Smith, his adorable German Shepherd and an extremely empty New York City, we follow our protagonist as he battles what's left of humanity after they evolved into vampire-like creatures. Suprisingly, this is a horror film that Graham and Ashley actually wind up liking!! But due to the horrible ending, the poor explination of the book's theme and the absolutely gut-wrenching death of Sam the dog, none of us will be revisiting this film any time soon. JUST READ THE DAMN BOOK ALREADY. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
IT'S SEASON 2! And since the hosts are giant reading nerds, we're happy to start off this season with our new theme, BOOK IT! - Book to Film Adaptations. And what weirder way to start a new year than with the 1988 acid-trip, The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking?! Based on the hugely successful Swedish book series by Astrid Lindgren, Graham introduces Katie and Ashley to this giant mishmash of insanity. "Starring" (a term we use loosely) Tami Erin, Eileen Brennan (from Clue!), Dennis Dugan (who would later go on to direct Happy Gilmore, Problem Child and Big Daddy), and a bunch of other horrible nobody actors, this film follows Pippi's adventures with two children as she tries (not?) to murder them. Also, get ready, the theme song, like Pippi, will haunt your dreams FOREVER...PIPPI LONGSTOCKING IS COMING IN TO YOUR WORLD... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's our (Holiday) Season Finale! Ashley introduces Graham and Katie to the overly-stuffed 1994 film, Mixed Nuts, telling the story of a ragtag group of unlikely characters connected to the crisis hotline Lifesavers on one crazy Christmas Eve. Starring a post-Father of the Bride: Part One Steve Martin, comedy goddess Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, Rob Reiner, Anthony LaPaglia, Juliette Lewis, Adam Sandler, Robert Klein, and comedy n00bs (at the time) Parker Posey and Jon Stewart (as well as Liev Schreiber in his first film role), this is the first collaboration from sister-team Nora and Delia Ephron, released immediately after the romantic juggernaut, Sleepless in Seattle. But it just goes to show that stacking a film with that much talent can lend to some insanely wacky jokes before becoming completely suffocating. But all you need to remember is that in every pothole...there is hope! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
HOLI-YAYYYY! Join us as Katie introduces Graham and Ashley to the classic 1974 Christmas horror film, Black Christmas. One of the original slasher pics, the inspiration for Halloween, with innovative camera work in a pre-steadi-cam era and a killer cast, Katie finds a way to bring horror to the holidays. Starring a slew of actors who would go on to have extremely successful careers in horror, this innovative (for the time) story follows a group of sorority girls on Christmas Eve as they start getting disturbing phone calls from a deranged lunatic, and are then swiftly met with an icy end. With horror mainstays Margo Kidder (who would follow this film with The Amityville Horror), Keir Duella (who had been in 2001: A Space Odyssey six years prior), John Saxon (best known for A Nightmare on Elm St.), Art Hinkle (who went on to play a role in Invasion of the Body Snatchers) as well as comedic ingenue Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), this is one horror film that ALL THE PODCASTERS WOUND UP LOVING. So make sure your halls are decked because THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE.
IT'S THE HOLIDAY SEASON! Kicking off our special FOUR-PART series, Holi-YAY!, Graham, Katie and Ashley introduce each other to three of our favorite holiday specials. First up is Graham's pick with the absolutely amazing and adorable A Muppet Family Christmas, originally airing in 1987. This delightful story brings the entire Muppet Family together at Fozzie Bear's mother's house on a snowy Christmas Eve, joined by the crew from Sesame Street and the Fraggles of Fraggle Rock! Next, Katie talks about her love of Laurel and Hardy with the 1929 silent short, Big Business. The iconic comedy duo is out to sell some Christmas trees in Los Angeles, and of course, a giant, ridiculous fight breaks out and destroys everything in sight. Rounding out the trio is Ashley's pick, the 1981 direct-to-video collection, A Walt Disney Christmas. Consisting of six short Disney films, this one showcases a few holiday classics with Mickey, Pluto, Donald (NOT DAFFY, KATIE), Goofy, Chip and Dale, and many others. Get ready to fa-la-la-la-laugh your twinkling tushy off, and feel all hot chocolatey inside. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our FINAL ENTRY in the "Politics, UGH!" theme as Ashley introduces Graham to the 2006 political comedy, Idiocracy. Co-written by Mike Judge (known for masterpieces like Office Space, Bevis and Butt-head, and King of the Hill) and Etan Cohen (known for trash fires Get Hard and Tropic Thunder), this film is wildly remembered for its amazing open...and very little else. A great premise with an absolutely horrible execution, this film stars a very "hot at the moment" Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard and a slew of other Mike Judge regulars, and tackles the dumbing down of America 500 years in the future, and how the world's most average man must save the planet. But don't worry, this podcast has electrolytes. It's what plants crave. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL in the second entry of our "Politics, UGH!" movies as Katie introduces Ashley to the 1976 multiple-Oscar Winning film, All The President's Men. While the gang discusses the importance of journalism and the power of words as weapons, they also dive in to the stylistic choices across the board that add up to this incredible masterpiece detailing the real-life story of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's investigative report on Watergate. With an incredible cast (all at the top of their game during the mid-70s) including Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook, Jason Robards and Jane Alexander, and written by the incredible William Goldman, it just goes to prove that...IF YOU'RE ON YOUR PHONE DURING A MOVIE YOU WILL MISS IT. Don't worry, just follow the money... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Do we have a new president? Is the planet still standing? Join us for our new theme "Politics, UGH" as Graham tries to introduce Katie to a bit of comedy with Andrew Fleming's Dick (heh...). This Watergate farce places two unflappable teenagers (peak Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams) in the White House, working as official Dog Walkers for President Richard Nixon. As the three hosts reminise about the plethora of teen films during the late 90s and early 00s, they realize...the President's dog doesn't poop. He does his "business." It's amazing what two girls, a crush, and some pot cookies will do to change a nation... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's the last episode of our "Spooky/Scary" series, and Ashley has chosen the gang's first remake, and horror legend Tom Savini's 1990 directorial debut, Night of the Living Dead. JOIN US for Graham's first viewing of this seminal and stylistically forward-thinking film starring a pre-Candyman Tony Todd as Katie waxes poetic about the Sultan of Slaughter's practical special effects. Based on the screenplay for the 1968 original Night of the Living Dead by John A. Russo and George Romero, both films took a huge bite out of diversity and female protagonist representation in the horror establishment. Don't make us come and get you... Katie subjects Graham and Ashley to the 1982 cult classic Halloween III: Season of the Witch in Part 2 of our Spoooooky/Scarrryyy series. This bananas movie is the lone outlier in the Halloween franchise, where producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill tried to make a film without their canonical lead, Michael Myers. Starring the most amazing Tom Akins and the less-than-amazing Stacey Nelkin, this film counts down the days to Halloween with bitchin' masks, ritual sacrifice, Stonehenge, science fiction, conspiracy theories, killer SFX and very, very weird sex. Happy, happy Halloween! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
IT'S THE SPOOKY SEASON...so join us in the first of our 3-part theme on SCARY MOVIES. Graham introduces the girls to the 1990 "Thrillomedy"...Arachnophobia. Jeff Daniels must fight off the hordes of super-poisonous, super-deadly, super-ridiculous, and super-anxiety inducing spiders with the help of none other than John Goodman. Just, uh, make sure you're not listening to this while outside...or taking a shower...or on the toilet...or watching Family Ties. Eight legs, two fangs and an attitude. The last of our "Movies You've Seen The Most" series, Ashley introduces Katie to 1985's comedic masterpiece, Clue. The bombastic ensemble cast stars Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren, Colleen Camp and Lee Ving. Continuing our "Movies You've Seen The Most" series, Katie dives in to her...comfort movie...and introduces Graham and Ashley to 1987's Hellraiser. Starring the venerable Doug Bradley, this is the film that launched a (currently) ten-film franchise and launched the horror icon, Pinhead. Come to Daddy. Join us for the pilot episode of our new podcast, Let Me Introduce You, where we begin the first of our three-part series, "Movies You've Seen The Most." In this episode, we are introduced to Graham's pick, the 1989 classic Troop Beverly Hills starring the incomparable Shelley Long and Craig T. Nelson! Let Me Introduce You is a podcast hosted by Graham Veth, Katie Kubert and Ashley Krohn. We’ve known each other nearly 20 years (starting back in film school) and have stayed close friends ever since. We know...everything about one another and have far, far too much in common.Except, our taste in movies. Seriously, there is very little overlap….Give Graham a rom-com, an 80s comedy with a strong female lead, and a puppet or two, and he's there. Make Ashley laugh, make Ashley cry, just give her movie that makes her think and/or feel something. Katie's the resident horror and sci-fi nerd, give her more of dat gore! Each week, one of us will introduce the others to one of our favorites. The catch is that one of us has to be seeing it for the first time. We’ll talk about why that movie is important to us (or why we want to subject the other two to it) and hope and pray the others see it the way we do.From Troop Beverly Hills to Hellraiser; Clue to Nightmare on Elm Street; Barbarella to Step Up 2: The Streets, no movie is off the table (even if we find it’s not our cup of tea…).New episodes drop every Thursday, let us introduce you to Let Me Introduce You!
