I often struggle to describe exactly what I teach to the students in the program here at Starfish. Partly because my ADHD brain has a hard time translating my thoughts into words sometimes, and partly because there is just SO much that goes on here! I usually use the term 'social skills' to describe what students learn, but really I only use that term because it's what people know and recognize. We also work on: life skills problem-solving skills communication strategies self-advocacy emotional regulation conflict resolution decision-making relationship building. Yeah, it's a lot! Over the next couple of months, I'm using my solo podcast/YouTube episodes to dive deep into each one of the four modules that make up the program here, called SC3 Academy. 'SC3' stands for socially competent, confident, and connected. In this week's episode, I'm breaking down the 8 weeks of our module called 'Identity'. This is the content I teach live in the groups in August through October, and I consider it to be the foundation of the program. Here's a clip from the episode: Because of this, our kiddos very, very rarely get helpful social feedback. So if all that's happening is, you know, every time it's recess time the other kids run away from you, or you know, the other kids keep telling you that you're annoying but you don't know why, how can you possibly create a different outcome for yourself? How can you possibly start to make friends and have conversations with kids when you don't know why the kids are running away from you? Or you don't know why they're calling you annoying? Or you don't know why everybody stops talking when you walk up to the group in the hallway? This is one of my biggest soapboxes if you will about social is everybody in the world deserves to have helpful social feedback. And so lesson seven, week seven, I teach our students how to give each other helpful social feedback. On a personal note: I moved out of Texas a few months ago, and it is currently 2F/-17C and snowing in my new home! My kitty and I are holed up inside because I'm not even pretending like I know how to drive in the ice and snow! Wishing everyone in the US a safe week as most of us are experiencing the chill right now! I'll see you again next week, and I'm glad you are here!
This is the last encore episode of 2023! In the face of the possible border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana, I decided to repost the episode I recorded with Steven Jasmin, the Managing Director of SC3. Stephen has been deeply involved in Guyana since 2017 and has some fascinating insights about this rapidly growing nation. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation: Guyana's Transformation: Since the discovery of oil in 2015, Guyana has been on a remarkable journey of growth. It's projected to have a real GDP growth rate of 4346%. The Qatar of South America: Steven believes that Guyana has the potential to become the "Qatar of South America" and the world's fastest-growing economy. This bold claim is backed by the country's massive oil reserves and its strategic location. Investment Opportunities: Guyana's growth isn't just about oil. There are significant opportunities in infrastructure development, eco-tourism, and real estate. Plans are underway for a massive deepwater harbor and a road or rail network connecting Guyana to Brazil. The Future of Guyana: Despite its small population, Steven predicts an influx of people due to its status as the fastest-growing economy. This episode is about a little-known South American country called Guyana, a new frontier market that has seen an influx of new investments in different sectors since the discovery of oil in its territory in 2015. To talk about Guyana I invited Steven Jasmin, the managing director of Smart City Clearing Company Ltd.(Sc3) an internationally based Frontier Market Merchant Bank and Asset Management firm. Steven has spent a lot of time in Guyana since 2017, and he feels that the country's status as a Global Leader and Regional Leader will only grow in importance over the next decade. *This episode is not an investment advice* For more on Smart City Clearing Company Ltd.(Sc3) click here Follow Steven Jasmin on Linkedin and Twitter ===== Don't forget to visit the Emerging Markets Today website. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.20.347666v1?rss=1 Authors: Johnson, K. R., Mallon, B. S., Fann, Y. C., Chen, K. G. Abstract: The ground or naive pluripotent state of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), which was initially established in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), is an emerging and tentative concept. To verify this important concept in hPSCs, we performed a multivariate meta-analysis of major hPSC datasets via the combined analytic powers of percentile normalization, principal component analysis (PCA), t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), and SC3 consensus clustering. This vigorous bioinformatics approach has significantly improved the predictive values of the current meta-analysis. Accordingly, we were able to reveal various similarities between some naive-like hPSCs (NLPs) and their human and mouse in vitro counterparts. Moreover, we also showed numerous fundamental inconsistencies between diverse naive-like states, which are likely attributed to interlaboratory protocol differences. Collectively, our meta-analysis failed to provide global transcriptomic markers that support a bona fide human naive pluripotent state, rather suggesting the existence of altered pluripotent states under current naive-like growth protocols. This week Warren and Rachel talk with special guest Paula Taylor from the Sulphur Christian Community Coalition in Sulphur, Louisiana. In today's episode Paula shares from her experience serving a hurting community as we talk about ministering to communities and individuals in crisis. The past few years have seen a number of powerful storms and hurricanes knock out entire communities, and recently Sulphur, Louisiana, has been hit especially hard. This weekend Paula and others in Sulphur had to evacuate from their home for Hurricane Delta while still recovering from damage caused by Hurricane Laura. After Hurricane Laura made landfall on August 27, Paula and SC3 jumped headlong into cleanup and relief, ministering to their community in the midst of crisis. As we talk and think about disaster relief and crisis management, we also consider how lessons learned in those areas can help us encourage, support and love those who may be grieving or struggling in our own lives. For more information on SC3, you can visit sulphurccc.org.
Greg interviews Steve Jasmin, of SC3 in the first episode where the is not directly a fund manager, but rather an asset manager and merchant banker.Steven Jasmin grew up in the United states, graduated from Emory University’s Business School, and immediately built a management consulting business providing advice to fortune 500 companies such as Delta Airlines, Coca Cola, and Johnson and Johnson. Around 2010 he pivoted towards advising Offshore Oil and Gas dynasties in both their business efficiencies as well as their investments, and ultimately became a Chief Restructuring Officer for several of his clients. Today Steve spends his time in Guyana, focused on growth opportunities largely related to the Offshore Oil discoveries made since 2015. He has built several companies to help provide value and impact to the Guyanese people, and investors that want to participate in the country’s growth.

Over the past twenty-five years Gary Ferguson has written for a wide variety of publications, from Vanity Fair to The Los Angeles Times. He's also author of 18 books on science and nature, including the award-winning Hawks Rest, published by National Geographic Adventure Press, as well as a keynote presenter at conservation and outdoor education gatherings around the country. He is currently on the faculty of the Rainier Writing Workshop Masters of Fine Arts program, at Pacific Lutheran University. Gary's newest book, just completed and currently in production, is called The Carry Home. The work is a celebration of the outdoor life shared between Ferguson and his late wife Jane, who died tragically in a canoeing accident in northern Ontario in the spring of 2005. Meanwhile Gary's biography of the late naturalist John Ripley Forbes—arguably the man most responsible for bringing nature experiences to America's urban kids—will arrive in the the summer of 2011. Much of Gary's writing arises out of intimate experiences. He trekked 500 miles through Yellowstone to write Walking Down the Wild (Simon & Schuster), spent a season in the field at a wilderness therapy program for Shouting at the Sky (St. Martin's Press), journeyed 250 miles on foot for Hawks Rest, and followed through the seasons the first 14 wolves released into Yellowstone National Park for The Yellowstone Wolves: The First Year (Globe Pequot). "I learn best by doing, " Ferguson says, "especially if the doing is at the edge of my comfort zone. That's where I find the kinds of lessons that make the world seem new again." Gary's keynote presentations, on the other hand, are meant to bring to light the mythology, psychology, and cultural history that have long inspired human perspectives of nature - from the days of the ancients, right into modern times." Ferguson first answered the call to adventure at age 12, loading up his purple sting-ray bike with camping gear and riding with his older brother through the central Midwest. By age 18, bicycles had given way to boxcars and backpacks, as he made his way across North America by rail and by thumb—as often than not heading west, and heading for mountains. After working as an interpretive naturalist for the Forest Service, at age 25 he plunged full-time into the freelance writing life. Soon thereafter his work found a home in the national media—both his personal profiles of American nature, as well as a wide range of social and environmental stories from Europe, Africa and North America.

John Francis was in his twenties when a 1971 oil spill in San Francisco Bay jarred his comfortable life. Even as he joined the volunteers who scrubbed the beaches and fought to save birds and sea creatures poisoned by petroleum, he felt the need to make a deeper, more personal commitment. As an affirmation of his responsibility to our planet, he chose to stop using motorized vehicles and began walking wherever he went. His decision was greeted with surprise, disbelief, and even mockery—but it was only the start of a much deeper transformation. A few months later he took a vow of silence that would last seventeen years. He founded Planetwalk in 1982 when he began his walking and sailing pilgrimage around the world. To date, Dr. Francis has walked across the U.S., sailed and walked through the Caribbean, and South America from Venezuela to Argentina and a walk in Cuba. Today Planetwalk consults on sustainable development and works with educational groups to teach kids about the environment. He is the author of Planet Walker, 22 Years of Walking 17 Years of Silence.
A proud product of south central Los Angeles, Juan D. Martinez is the national Natural Leaders Network coordinator for the Children & Nature Network.
