Director Joachim Trier has been nominated for the Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film Oscars for The Worst Person in the World. If the title refers to his protagonist that's rather harsh. Julie is, after all, only trying to navigate relationships and career and find happiness and meaning in her life in contemporary Oslo. Trier talks to Nick Ahad about using a novelistic form – prologue, chapters, epilogue – in the creation of a film, working with Cannes Best Actress winner Renate Reinsve, and how his film is full of light, warmth and humour - the very opposite of Scandi Noir. Clare Lilley, curator and new director of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park discusses the first major UK exhibition of American painter, sculptor and printmaker Robert Indiana and the Park's future. There have been several announcements recently from the Scottish Government about funding and supporting the revival of Scotland's cultural landscape in the wake of the pandemic. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 2nd 2022. A Happy New Year to you all as we plummet headlong into the space year 2022 with another action-packed year of our show. Well, perhaps not exactly action-packed, but I think we've certainly got a few exciting tasty morsels to tempt you with over the coming weeks, and they're not all of them simply the stale leftovers from our Christmas hamper. This time last year, Sandy and I gathered here at VoS HQ and discussed the various telly faces that had been lost to us in the previous year, but this year we've decided that we're really not in the mood to do that again, and instead, I decided to strap Sandy into his recording chair as I went through the list of shows we produced for VISION ON SOUND last year, many of which he hadn't been involved in, and ask if he had any further nuggets of information or extra insight he might have into our various topics and, as you'll hopefully find out as well, even when he didn't, it was just nice for me to rediscover what an eclectic mixture of topics we'd covered during the past twelve months. In the course of the hour, we revisit Scandi Noir (some filmed in Stockport - The new Hollywoodford!), ponder upon the binge watch, chat about some of our favourite new shows, the Christmas Panto, police dramas, Flash Gordon and the urge to bellow "All Hail Ming!" at Stockport County. We also touch upon SPIRAL, TOMORROW'S WORLD, SCHITT'S CREEK, SPIES, BIG BROTHER, not being the fan of THE WEST WING that I think he is, music, THE SWEENEY, Simon Park, CALLAN, THE HUNDRED, Concert-going Post-Lockdown, SHERLOCK HOLMES, FRANKIE HOWERD, and CORONATION STREET. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. We all know and love Scandinavian crime drama, but why? What is it that captivates us about Scandi Noir, why does it have such a rich heritage and what sets it apart from other crime drama genres? In this epsiode, Professor David Wilson and Emilia Fox talk to Scandi Noir expert Professor Steve Hall about his theories around Ultra-Realism. Prof. Hall explains how Scandi Noir has a lot of offer us in explaining patterns in society, predicting trends of behaviour and better understanding social interactions. And they speak to screenwriter Peter Harness, who was the lead writer for Wallander amung many other well known crime dramas. Peter moved to Scandinavia and even lives near where Wallander was filmed. Emilia and Prof. Wilson discover the similarities between real life and Scandi Noir, and the politics motivations for change that gave this crime drama genre its unique beginnings. Will Dean has gone a long way to immerse himself in Nordic  Noir culture, even building a house in the middle of a Swedish forest.  It's the setting for his edgy thrillers Dark Pines and Red Show,  featuring the deaf journalist and investigator Tuva Moodyson. Will reads  from his latest book, Red Snow, and tells us about life in the forest,  how he writes and his "creeps book". There's also a competition to win  one of Will's books - but you'll have to listen to find out. Some  commentators have suggested that Scandi Noir is now in decline. Are Will  Dean and the other British invaders bringing new life to the genre?  We'd Like A Word is a podcast and radio  show from Paul Waters and  Stevyn Colgan. We talk with writers, readers,  celebrities, talkers,  poets about books, songs, lyrics, speeches,  scripts, fiction and  non-fiction. London's Wellcome Institute has a new exhibition entitled The Institute of Sexology which it describes as "a candid exploration of the most publicly discussed of private acts". How will our reviewers tiptoe gently around the explicit nature of what's on show? What We Do In The Shadows is a New Zealand vampire comedy film about a group of bloodsucking flatmates (a 'dracumentary' if you will) - who does the washing-up in the house of the undead? Behind The Beautiful Forevers is David Hare's new play at London's National Theatre, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winning author Katherine Boo. It deals with life death and hope in a Mumbai undercity Robert Edric is an acclaimed British novelist whose latest book explores the life of Branwell Bronte - brother of the more famous sisters - whose life couldn't match theirs. Legacy is a new Danish TV police programme. What is it about the Scandi Noir genre that keeps on gripping UK audiences? Tom Sutcliffe is joined by Helen Lewis Pat Kane and Amanda Craig. The producer is Oliver Jones.

With Mark Lawson. Zoe Wanamaker, familiar to TV and cinema audiences from her roles in My Family, Poirot and the Harry Potter films, returns to the stage in a new production of Passion Play by Peter Nichols - a drama about marriage and temptation. She reflects on her approach to theatre, and remembers her father Sam, founder of Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Swedish novelist and critic Jan Arnald uses the pen-name Arne Dahl when writing crime-fiction. His novels about Paul Hjelm and his colleagues in the Intercrime Group, an elite team of Swedish detectives, were adapted for Swedish TV, and are currently being broadcast on BBC Four. The books themselves are now being published in English. He discusses the advantages of having a team of detectives, rather than an individual, and about the reaction in Sweden to the British passion for Scandi Noir fiction. In the latest edition of the Cultural Exchange project, in which 75 leading creative minds share their passion for a book, film, poem, piece of music or other work of art, Suggs from Madness nominates the poem On a Portrait of a Deaf Man by John Betjeman. It's 50 years since The Beatles first topped the UK singles chart with From Me to You, which was a hit in May 1963. But what else was in the Top 40 back then? David Hepworth considers whether this was a turning-point in pop history, and identifies some other classics in that week's chart. Producer Olivia Skinner.
