We hear about Glastonbury Festival from Nina Chesworth's perspective. Nina had attended previous years with some sight but this year was her first time as a completely blind attendee. We also take a look at access provisions at some of the UK's other festivals and how these have evolved over the years, with Gideon Feldman, who is the Head of Programs at Attitude is Everything. Attitude is Everything have been campaigning for over twenty years to improve the disability access at live events. And finally, we hear about how American Electronic Dance musician, Lachi is changing the industry for disabled artists. She campaigns and consults on disability inclusion, including at the White House, and this year she's launched RAMPD, Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities. The interview was first broadcast on the BBC World Service's arts program, The Cultural Frontline. Presenter: Peter White Producer: Beth Hemmings Production Coordinator: Liz Poole Website image description: pictured is the festival crowed at Glastonbury. In the foreground are hundreds of hands raised in the air, people sitting on shoulders, colourful flags at full mast and a masses of multi-coloured confetti is flying through the air. The cloud of confetti is so thick that the festival's Pyramid Stage appears as just a silhouette in the background.

Not that we have an overinflated sense of self-worth, but with a month off looming ahead of us, this last episode is the equivalent of the Pyramid Stage's Sunday Headliner at Worthy Farm. Luckily, our brilliant guest today is more than worthy: Olivia Knight, founder of Patchwork, came to talk to us (virtually) about the concept of new business showers. Why don't we celebrate business milestones like we celebrate life milestones? Well, with Patchwork and a lil help from your pals, we absolutely can. And should. And will! Check out Patchwork here.

On today’s episode, I’m joined by the multi-Grammy winning singer, Gregory Porter. Gregory’s was originally set to become an American football player, and it wasn’t until he turned 40 that his rich jazz baritone caught the attention of industry bigwigs and subsequently, jazz heads around the world. His major label debut Liquid Spirit went on to become the most streamed jazz album of all time. He's played Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, sung for the Queen and prior to Covid was travelling over 200 days a year, playing to his adoring fans around the world. So with all that travel and all those miles covered, it’s no surprise that today’s episode is a long haul, feature length episode. Gregory joins me from his home in California, and this is a really touching, personal, evocative episode. Gregory says it’s like therapy - he remembers his travels so vividly, and each destination is full of emotion as he describes it to us. We’ll go on a journey from the West to the East coast of the United States, across Russia on the Transiberian Express and to a secret French island that I’d never heard of, which is now firmly added to my travel wish list. Oh and he serenades us not once but twice on this episode, so prepared to be soothed by that velvety voice!Destination Recap:Bakersfield, California, USAYosemite National Park, California, USASanta Monica, California, USASan Diego, California, USABrooklyn, New York, USAHarlem, New York, USASiberia, Russia Tokyo, JapanKanazawa, JapanPorquerolles, FranceUkraineIstanbul, TurkeyTel Aviv, IsraelJakarta, Indonesia South Africa Sierra LeoneGhanaGregory Porter’s album All Rise is out now.Thank you so much for listening today. Habs Akram is a pioneering visual artist, and was Carl Cox's personal visual artist at the world renowned Space Ibiza for 8 years. Habs also travelled around the world with Carl as he conjured up magic with his visuals at the likes of Ultra Miami, and before that he worked on other projects including Glastonbury's iconic Pyramid Stage. There's many things that we should be reflecting and re-evaluating on about the music industry since Covid-19 brought the industry to its knees last March - and one of them is giving credit to those behind the scenes who make the events what they are. Whilst the DJs are amazing at what they do, the focus and limelight is of course always on them in the centre of the booth, but the events at that scale even down to your more intimate affairs would not be the same spectacle without visual artists like Habs. Habs recalls his first initial encounter with Carl Cox, the inspiration and patience that went into his visual mixing app, reminisces on the amazing years at Space, meeting the likes of Uma Thurman to Lionel Messi & Kyle Minogue, refusing Paris Hilton entry into the booth, hilarious stories from when he did the visuals at a fetish party in London, the importance of remaining humble & never forgetting where you've come from, and the highs and lows that come with the demands of touring the world. True House Stories Podcast with special guests by Lenny Fontana
TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ GRAEME PARK #029 - PART 2 The story of DJ Graeme Park really mirrors the story of the evolution of dance music and club culture itself. Graeme found himself working in a Nottingham record shop called Selectadisc in the early 1980s, when the very first house records began to filter through from Chicago, Detroit and New York. When the shop's owner opened a nightclub, it was only natural he should turn to Graeme to select the discs. Determined to showcase this new style of music, his reputation as a house pioneer soon brought him to the attention of Mike Pickering at The Haçienda in Manchester, who asked him to cover for him while he went on holiday in 1988. Simply put, there was no-one else in the country who could do the job. The Summer of Love followed, and Parky quickly became one of the biggest names on the emerging dance scene. Aside from his nine year residency at The Haç, he was one of the first British DJs to play places like Australia, South America, the USA, Asia and beyond as well as producing and remixing tracks for the dancefloor, including The Brand New Heavies, Inner City, Eric B & Rakim, New Order, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and others. In the past few years Graeme has performed alongside a host of legendary DJs such as Todd Terry, David Morales, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Danny Krivit, Marshall Jefferson and others for a variety of FAC51 The Haçienda club nights playing a selection of contemporary tunes alongside a variety of forgotten classics. Graeme has been a major part of the critically acclaimed Haçienda Classical shows which have performed around the UK since 2016 to rapturous response where he performs live alongside the Manchester Camerata Orchestra, Peter Hook and special guest vocalists to a set of classic club tunes from the 1970s up to the present day. This euphoric show has had rave reviews and gives you the chance to hear classic club tunes like you've never heard them before with a 70 piece orchestra, live percussionists and a choir. Graeme even performs some lead vocals at some shows too. The show opened the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2017 and has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Castlefield Bowl in Manchester, the Isle Of Wight Festival and lots of other arenas and festivals around the UK as well as in Dublin, Dubai and Switzerland. Graeme recently released compilation album “Long Live House Volume 01: 1980s” is a triple CD or double vinyl album of early house cuts from 1985 to 1989 which were all massive tunes for Graeme in the early days of house. Released in December 2018, reaction to the album has been huge and has led to Graeme launching his own Long Live House club nights. Graeme is also producing a forthcoming music documentary called “Embrace The New” which features Marshall Jefferson, Johnny Marr, Shaun Ryder, Peter Hook, Rowetta, Clint Boon, Melanie Williams with others lined up too. Celebrating over 25 years on the radio with shows on Kiss, Galaxy, Key 103, Radio City, Juice FM, Forth One and more, Graeme's years of experience help him understand the specialist skills required by a radio DJ.

Hello and welcome to today’s show where I am pleased to welcome Keith Xander of the group Xander and the Peace Pirates. Keith is the lead singer and lead guitarist with the band who hail from Liverpool. Through their album 11:11 and live concerts the band have gained a large following of fans from around the world, supporting the likes of Bon Jovi and Mannfred Mann’s Earthband on the way. So a warm welcome to you Keith. Let’s start with the name of the band, Xander and the Peace Pirates. I suppose many people when they hear the name think that you are Xander, yet that is your surname and you have your brother, Stuart playing alongside you. The Pirates part of the name comes from the hook that you have on your right arm as you were born without a right hand. Yet that hasn’t held you back and you can play the guitar comfortably with the hook. Can you tell us a little about what it was like growing up and how you feel about your body nowadays? On your first album, many of the songs are about spiritual subjects. Can you explain how the spiritual side of life has become an influence in your life? Also, on the album you have an excerpt of a speech by Alan Watts, the author of The Way of Zen. Is he someone who has inspired you? You called your first album, 11:11 and have a facebook page about this number. What does 11:11 mean to you? I understand that you had a Near Death Experience several years ago. How did that come about? You have been influenced by the teachings of Adyashanti, an American spiritual teacher. What would you say attracts you to his teaching? Are there any books that you have read that have inspired you greatly? How are you finding life in these strange times of Lockdown. Do you have anything that you would like to say to people listening in about it? A little bird told me that there was a strong possibility that Xander and the Peace Pirates might have been playing at Glastonbury this year and that Glastonbury founder, Michael Eavis was so impressed that he said you should be up on the Pyramid Stage! Am I correct in saying that you have got a new album written and all ready to go, but you are still seeking a record deal for it?
“Blessed with an unparalleled memory for melody and vocal technique from virtually any culture, Nicki is able to easily leap from folk, French trip-hop, deep gospel, jazz or choral vocals to Indian classical or Arabic inflections as if all were emanating directly from her soul,” describes long time collaborator Nitin Sawhney who adds that:“Nicki is an entirely new phenomenon. She is truly the first global singer.”Singer, songwriter and composer Nicki Wells, AKA TURYA has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues from London’s Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House to Glastonbury’s main Pyramid Stage.I met Nicki briefly some 8 years ago now outside Triyoga via a Dear mutual friend who sadly took her own life not long afterwards. Little did I know when we met how she would remain part of that connection.Simply put, I’m a huge fan of Nicki’s. Skin from Skunk Anansie made headlines this summer when it was pointed out that she was the first black British artist to headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, not Stormzy. That was in 1999 and Skunk Anansie were five years into an incredible run of chart hits such as “Weak”, “Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good)” and “Charity”. Skin discusses her childhood, her career and what it was like being the only black, gay woman in the 1990’s music scene. Lisa Faulkner was scouted as a model at 16 before becoming an actor at the age of 20. She was well known for roles in Dangerfield, Brookside and Holby City before famously meeting a grisly end in Spooks. In 2010 she won Celebrity Masterchef, has since become a food writer and now co-presents John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen with her fiancé John Torode. She has published the memoir Meant To Be: My Journey to Motherhood which describes the death of her mother when Lisa was just 16 and her years navigating infertility, IVF and adoption. Joel Golby’s book Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant: Modern Life as Interpreted by Someone Who is Reasonably Bad at Living It describes how the journalist, whose father died when he was 15, became an adult orphan at the age of 25 when his mother died. He talks about the impact of the sudden and unwelcome intrusion of adult responsibility into his otherwise hedonistic life. Dr Dean Burnett is a neuroscientist, author and stand-up comedian. I remember being ten. It was fun. That sense of freedom, when your summer holiday feels never-ending and it's all sleep-overs and how much flavoured sugar you can convince your parents to let you have. I definitely did not get asked to perform on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury like our youngest ever Gurls Talk guest, Princess K, did. This year alone, she has managed to tick that off her list, as well as dance with the icon that is Lauryn Hill – all before her 11th birthday. This was a truly wonderful chat which touched on so many things. We spoke about her hopes of opening a dance studio and starting a charity, what it feels like to dance in front of 150,000 people and how dancing is a wonderful way of letting go and being yourself. But beyond dance, we talked about how to battle body shaming, confidence, embracing yourself, dealing with rejection, the stresses of social media and chasing your dreams. With so much talent, and such a wise head on her shoulders, there is no doubt in my mind that this 10-year-old has got one hell of a future in front of her. Enjoy listening. And just so you know, we're taking a break for August. So, have a mad, beautiful, brilliant month. We'll be back in September, batteries recharged, ready to talk about body and skin. Most people's idea of a band 'roadie' is a burly bloke in a black T-shirt, lugging kit around a stage, living hard and touring constantly. Kim Chakanetsa speaks to two women who have broken this mould, living on the road with music royalty, and making them look and sound amazing. Known as the world's first female roadie, Tana Douglas is something of a legend in her field. She started off working for the Australian rock band AC/DC when she was just 16. She went on to tour with huge international artists such as Elton John and Status Quo, specialising in lighting. Sound engineer to the stars, Becky Pell, regularly plays huge arenas on sell-out tours for artists like Kylie Minogue and Westlife, and for three years has been in charge of the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, the world's biggest festival. She says it's a myth that you need to be big and brawny to work on stage, it's all about staying calm amid the chaos. l: Tana Douglas (credit BBC) r: Becky Pell (credit Becky Pell)

The frank and honest Steve Firth of Embrace details the “massive peaks and huge troughs” of 20 years in the music industry in an incredible story on Episode 24 of The StageLeft Podcast. Steve talks us through how he went from living in a tent and back of a car to playing the slot on the Pyramid Stage directly before David Bowie's iconic slot at Glastonbury Festival and how a friendship between Chris Martin of Coldplay & Danny McNamara led to Embrace releasing the top 10 single ‘Gravity'. Steve also details what it's like being in a band with “two strong minded brothers”, the bands' close relationship with fans, the composition of classics from their debut album, new material, Secret Gigs and hopes for a 20th Anniversary The Good Will Out tour. #bass #music #musicpodcast #podcast #musicians #bassist #bassists #guitar #guitarist #guitars #guitarists #musiccommentary #drums #drummer #drummers
