A film critic for publications & companies such as LA Weekly, New York Magazine, Vulture, The New York Times, The Criterion Collection, & formerly, The Village Voice, the brilliant Bilge Ebiri is one of my favorite journalists working today. Reuniting with Bilge to celebrate & evaluate the filmography of the great actor Russell Crowe, in this warm, chatty conversation, we look back at the movies that made Crowe a star along with some of his most legendary turns, including PROOF, ROMPER STOMPER, THE INSIDER, GLADIATOR, CINDERELLA MAN, & THE NICE GUYS. Aside from "Wicked," Red One" is probably the most advertised film of this season, but does it deserve to be? Film critic Leo Brady joins Kerry and Collin to talk about this much-hyped action fantasy film and why its star, Dwayne Johnson, needs to commit to different types of projects. They also talk about seeing the film in 4DX and why that format might not be suitable for all films. Why does the audience need to feel as pummeled as the characters on screen? Who is this movie for? Does the great J.K. Simmons make for a convincing Santa Claus? All this, plus Kerry gives us three films from the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" book.  Web site with knitted caps used in "Red One": https://leedoesstuff.com/ Book movies covered: Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) Romper Stomper (1992) Young Frankenstein (1974)

William & Lonsdale: Lives in the Law

This week we welcome entertainment lawyer Bryce Menzies. You name an Australian film and Bryce most likely worked on it; Muriel's Wedding, Romper Stomper, Proof, Ned Kelly, The Great Gatsby, The Babadook and The Dry - to name a few. From coordinating 100,000 people at an anti-uranium rally in the 70's, to bringing together multiple parties on major movie contracts, Bryce says the fundamentals are the same, and it all comes back to organising. Bryce has had a unique and wonderful Life in the Law and it was a pleasure to welcome him to the podcast. www.greenslist.com.au/podcast

On today's pod I have executive Producer 'Dan Edwards' and he is the co-founder of the production company 'Rough Diamond' with his father 'John Edwards.' Today we will be talking about their latest project ‘Year Of' which is now available on ‘Stan Australia.' They have produced some amazing content together with shows like ‘Romper Stomper' and ‘Bump' and this project is a brain child of ‘Dan's' which has been a long time in the making. If you think his ‘John Edwards' name sounds family - you would be right as he has had some amazing success over the years with ‘Secret Life Of Us' and ‘Love My way' just to name a few. There is a very similar style that they both share in my eyes. I think dan is a little edgier with his latest work and I think he has completed some really interesting work on this series - especially giving voice to young people. ‘Year Of' takes place in the same universe as the hit ‘Stan Original Series Bump' and is set in and around the senior years of high school – exploring the liminal time between childhood and adulthood and the renegotiations with adults that it brings.  Coming up, we will find out what influences Dan has recognised from his father ‘John Edwards' work. We will hear how they created this series and how they managed to create authentic voices for young people in the writers room.  We will talk about why streaming services has allowed more space for a show like ‘Year Of' and how the success of Bump helped get this project made. Plus we will get plenty of exclusives from behind the scenes of ‘Year Of.' Which starts this week on the steaming service ‘Stan Australia.' Which you can subscribe to on your smart phones and smart TV's.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Gene's comment that he didn't "enjoy Australian cinema" triggered quite a few rebuttals in the form of Shat The Movies commissions. And neo-Nazi drama "Romper Stomper" just might be the one that changed his mind.  Before there was 2000's "Gladiator" or 2012's "Les Miserables," a young Russell Crowe was looking mighty fine while sporting tighty whities, engaging in some ultraviolence, and throwing in a little surprise doggystyle. But make no mistake, "Romper Stomper" was a serious film that straddled the line between zombie movie and "American History X." And it made some points that are incredibly relevant today. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses odd editing choices, racist stereotypes, the history of Footscray and the tragic tale of Crowe's co-star Daniel Pollock. Welcome back to another episode of the CHC podcast, I'm your host Aran and on this show, we are joined by Australian director Geoffrey Wright. From an early age, he had always loved film and was passionate about the industry, leading him to be a film critic for some time. However, this was not enough for him to just sit in the audience and watch a movie - he wanted to make movies!Since that vision many years ago he has created worlds beyond the imagination with films such as Romper Stomper (1992) starring non-other than Russell Crowe and Metal Skin which blended love, jealousy, action, and even some witchcraft/satanism together into a raw and visceral look at the low-income suburban areas of Australian cities. Most notably, he directed the cult-classic slasher movie Cherry Falls (2000) which starred the talented Brittany Murphy. PLOT - In the small town of Cherry Falls, Virginia, a black-clad, long-haired killer is offing various high school teenage virgins in different gory ways. Jody Markam, the virginal teenage daughter of the town's sheriff in charge of the investigation, launches her own investigation to figure out the killer's identity and stumbles into a web of long-hidden dark secrets spun around the killings involving people of the town she always thought she trusted which makes her one of the killer's primary targets.Geoff is a wealth of knowledge in all forms of the industry and shares some great insight as to what it takes to make it. We get a look inside his career and most excitingly he tells ALL about Cherry Falls and the uncut version that we never got to see..Join me as I dive inside the mind of writer/director Geoffrey Wright. For more of my content - https://linktr.ee/FirstClassHorrorMake sure to rate/review the show as it helps greatly.

Cinesthesia tackles the first King adaptation written under his pen name Richard Bachman. Jim finds a new love in this dumb smart movie with a terrible title, unlike Romper Stomper, which is a terrible movie with a great title; he also pitches a movie in a smallternate universe. In The Running Man Arnold Schwarzenegger runs through a death gauntlet reality TV game show in a dystopian America. Packed with atrociously bad action movie lines, the film conveys everything with just visuals and sound effects. Join a filmmaker (and sometimes film teacher) and a film teacher (and sometimes filmmaker) as they venture into the dark heart of their own befuddled relationship to culture, the youth, the internet, friendship, love, hate, time, space and, of course: *m*o*v*i*e*s*. Daina Reid is an award-winning Australian TV and Film Director. And she’s just lovely! In this interview, she shares how a Tropfest short film led her to leave acting and become a director. She talks about her recent work on SBS’s Sunshine TV drama and what she learnt working with the South-Sudanese community in Melbourne. Later in the interview, Daina explains some of her directorial and technical decisions for filming comedy shows. Less is more! It was also interesting to hear her thoughts on casting and what it’s like working with non-actors compared to established actors like Asher Keddie (Offspring; Paper Giants). I met Daina when I attended her Directing Masterclass a few weeks ago. Learning more about directing is really changing how I write my stories. In this episode, you may hear my fellow classmate Kylie in the background who came to film the interview with me. Find more about Daina Reid on her IMDB profile: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0717225/< Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (ABC TV) Fledgling detective Phryne Fisher is known for her sharp wit and pearl-handled pistol, which she uses to fight injustice in Melbourne during the 1920s. The glamorous sleuth makes her way through the city’s alleyways and jazz clubs while she fights crime as part of a larger mission — making sure that Murdoch Foyle, who she believes is responsible for the disappearance of her younger sister, stays behind bars. She fights for justice for people who can’t help themselves, including exploited workers and missing girls. Sunshine (SBS) Sunshine is based in Melbourne’s outer-western suburb of Sunshine and its surrounds. The story follows Jacob Garang, a young, aspiring South Sudanese-Australian basketballer who is on the cusp of being picked up by scouts for the US College league. He gets caught up in a police investigation involving a teenage girl from one of Melbourne’s affluent suburbs. The Wrong Girl (Network 10) The series follows Lily Woodward, a producer on a morning television show, and what happens when life, love and friendships collide. Longing for a life rich in romance, a dynamic career and a happy family, Lily is constantly thrown off course. As her journey continues, Lily discovers that sometimes the right choices can lead to the wrong places and the wrong choices can turn out to be the right ones. The Secret River (ABC TV) This two-part miniseries is based on the novel of the same name written by Kate Grenville. It follows the story of young couple, William and Sal Thornhill, who are transported to the new colony of New South Wales in 1805, giving a look into the colonisation of Australia and the escalating conflict between the original Indigenous inhabitants and the newly arrived white convicts and settlers. Romper Stomper (Stan) Romper Stomper is an Australian television series sequel to the 1992 film Romper Stomper movie and and set 25 years after the events in the film. The six-part series follows a new generation of far-right activists and their anti-fascist counterparts, with the story focussing on a fictional far-right group led by Blake Farrand known as Patriot Blue. Featuring Russell Crowe himself! Popcorn Talk proudly presents Profiles with Malone and Mantz! In this vodcast series hosts Alicia Malone and Scott "Movie" Mantz break down and focus on some of the most prolific Hollywood directors, writers and actors in the entertainment industry - past & present. Russell Ira Crowe was born in Wellington, New Zealand, to Jocelyn Yvonne (Wemyss) and John Alexander Crowe, both of whom catered movie sets. His maternal grandfather, Stanley Wemyss, was a cinematographer. Crowe's recent ancestry includes Welsh (where his paternal grandfather was born, in Wrexham), English, Irish, Scottish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Maori (one of Crowe's maternal great-grandmothers, Erana Putiputi Hayes Heihi, was Maori). Crowe's family moved to Australia when he was a small child, and Russell got the acting bug early in life. Our first episode! They said we'd never make it, or they might have had they known we were doing it. They! What a bunch of negative tossers.Anyway, here we are. Forty-five-odd minutes of Anna and me yakking about movies, plus some musical interludes to give you brief respite from us yakking about movies. We hope you enjoy our maiden effort. Comments are of course welcome, and you can find us on twitter @timsterne and @ARPy_.[02:24] The Babadook (2014)Jennifer Kent's domestic monster movie has Tim questioning his fright-fitness, while Anna conjures a satanic sock-and-lint man. The verdict? Parenting is the real horror story. (Sorry, kids. We love you.)[17:41] Winter's Bone (2010)Methamphetamine, Jennifer Lawrence and "historical banjos" meet in this bleak but not-too-bleak Ozarks mystery. Meanwhile, Anna doesn't know about the awful thing that happens in Deliverance, so let's keep that a surprise.[27:32] Romper Stomper (1992)Russell Crowe loves Hitler, while Tim has eyes only for Jacqueline McKenzie's moonlit arse. Has this controversial Australian film retained its power to shock? You'll have to listen to find out.
