In this episode of Ron's Amazing Stories, we head out to the Old West with a radio adaptation of the classic film Broken Arrow. Originally released in 1950 and starring James Stewart, Broken Arrow tells a story inspired by the real-life friendship between Apache leader Cochise and U.S. Army scout Tom Jeffords. While the film takes its share of dramatic liberties, it was one of the first major Westerns to present Native Americans in a more thoughtful and sympathetic way. Our Story comes from the golden age of radio, as Screen Directors Playhouse brings the action to life—featuring James Stewart, Jeff Chandler, and Debra Paget reprising their roles from the original film. So sit back, relax, and let your imagination take over. In This Episode: A look at the film Broken Arrow The real history behind Cochise and Tom Jeffords A classic radio adaptation from Screen Directors Playhouse (aired September 7, 1951) Reflections on old-time radio and the power of imagination Ron's Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at audibletrial.com/ronsamazingstories. This week on Ron's Amazing Stories, we bring you a haunted double feature that's equal parts laughter and fright! Our first tale stars Bob Hope in the Screen Directors Playhouse adaptation of The Ghost Breakers (April 3rd, 1949). It's a spooky romp filled with witty one-liners, mistaken identities, and a manor full of “boo”s and belly laughs. Then, we trade laughter for goosebumps with Suspense's Ghost Hunt (June 23rd, 1949). A radio host spends the night in a haunted mansion where the echoes might be more than just sound effects. It's one of the creepiest stories ever broadcast. Between our two stories, I'll be talking about why we love to scare ourselves, how humor helps us face our fears, and a few real-life haunted homes that continue to keep the lights on—and the whispers going. So, grab your flashlight and your funny bone—because this week we're exploring Comedy and Creeps: A Haunted Double Feature. What You Will Hear: Introduction: Why we laugh at fear The Screen Directors Playhouse – The Ghost Breakers Ron's thoughts on laughter vs. fear Suspense – Ghost Hunt Closing commentary on hauntings and human curiosity Ron's Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at . On Ron's Amazing Stories last week, we delighted in two Western tales featuring the legendary Jimmy Stewart. But today, we're shifting gears to showcase a different side of this versatile actor. While many remember Stewart for his iconic roles in Westerns, his talents stretched far beyond, gracing dramas, spy thrillers, suspense films, and even a unique role involving conversations with an imaginary six-foot rabbit in "Harvey"—a comedy with surprisingly profound themes. Comedy from the golden age of radio isn't something we've often explored on this podcast. Truth be told, humor from that era can feel a bit dated. However, today's feature, "The Jackpot," defies that trend. This 1950 comedy film, directed by Walter Lang and starring Jimmy Stewart alongside Barbara Hale, was inspired by a real-life event where James P. Caffrey of Rhode Island won $24,000 worth of merchandise on the CBS radio quiz show, "Sing It Again." Imagine the chaos of winning a ton of raw beef without owning a freezer! While the film has faded from the limelight, preserved only in the 20th Century Fox Cinema Archives since 2012, we're bringing its radio adaptation to your ears today. Originally broadcast on NBC's Screen Directors Playhouse, Stewart reprises his role with Margaret Truman making her radio debut as his wife, Amy. Get ready for a delightful comedic gem, ”The Jackpot," aired originally on April 26, 1951. Ron's Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at .
