Join us for this fun pilot episode of our new “From the Field” podcast series we are beginning to explore. For the past week, our sporting team has been traveling around Southeast Alaska recording interviews with hunters and anglers regarding the endless opportunities and abundance of the region. During this episode, Aaron and Mandela sit on the edge of the Tongas National Forest with Artemis ambassador, Jodee Dixon, and the Executive Director of the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC), Meredith Trainor. We discuss their friendship and connection through hunting, mentorship and Yoga. We learn about the important conservation work SEACC does and the Artemis outreach programs Jodee offers. We also talk about the ways in which their background in mountaineering and whitewater kayaking parallel hunting and fishing. Enjoy this abbreviated podcast pilot episode and let us know what you think. Did you like hearing podcasts recorded in the field? Would you like them to be shorter or longer? What questions would you like to ask our guests? Links: www.seacc.org www.artemis.nwf.org www.nwf.org/gamechanger Show notes: 0:26 – Aaron sets the scene, introduces the guests and the stand-in cohost for this episode. 3:00 – Jodee talks about her passion for seeking and sharing knowledge. How she met Meredith and the transition to teaching Meredith how to hunt. 5:10 – Jodee talks about the different species she and her husband hunt in SE Alaska including Dahl sheep, elk, black bear and Sitka blacktail deer. 7:00 – Meredith talks about how she met Jodee and grew an interest in hunting after being a vegetarian for most of her life. 10:30 – Jodee shares how she got introduced to hunting and the story behind her first big game hunt for Dahl sheep. 14:00 – Jodee is currently teaching Meredith how to hunt. They both chat about how Artemis helped strengthen their connection and the opportunity to bring women together to share wild game and embrace a curiosity of hunting. 18:49 – Jodee and Meredith share how their experiences in whitewater kayaking, Yoga and mountaineering parallel how they approach hunting and fishing. Jodee reflects on single point focus and “forced meditation”. 23:19 – Meredith shares the conservation work she and her team at the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) focus on. One part of their work is focused on climate action, citizen science and the importance of sharing observations of a changing landscape due to climate change. 27:53 – Alaska is front and center when it comes to a warming climate. Meredith discusses how an increase in 3-6 degrees effects wildlife in Southeast Alaska. 29:40 – Jodee shares her observations and concerns regarding hunting, fishing and climate change in Southeast Alaska. 31:56 – Jodee highlights some of the Artemis outreach opportunities she offers in the region. 32:55 – Closing statements.

After 10 years of success in real estate he took a leave of absence from Alaska and never went back. Real Estate Journey: 2000 The Neely's started rehabbing properties. They did the BRRR thing, before it was a thing. 2004 Started a construction company building townhomes mostly as owner-builder. As a Limited Partner they own around 3500 doors. As General Partner they own 1300 doors. They also have experience permitting 40 to 70 unit apartments in the arduous Seattle permit process, and neighborhood plan reviews. Those were sold off with land, plans and permits. As the old saying goes, “All work and no fun, makes Jack a dull boy.” When not grounded in Edmonds, WA they enjoy travel, boating through the San Juan and Gulf Islands. The tables are turned as Dulkara answers questions put to her by her mother, Janine Martig. Dulkara bought a packraft before she ever sat in one, at a time when they were little known in New Zealand. She already had a passion for outdoor adventures and remote journeys but packrafting made her view topo maps with fresh eyes.In this episode, she shares the camaraderie and excitement of some of her trips, including a sweaty mission in the Kimberleys of Australia, a journey in the Fairweathes in SE Alaska and a recount of an evacuation from the Gates of the Arctic National Park. She also shares a little of her other passions and what drives her to encourage others to embrace the great outdoors. Podcast sponsored by Alpacka Raft:Alpacka Raft has been handcrafting packrafts for 20 years and has spearheaded packrafting into its modern, more accessible era. When you are looking for a remote Alaskan experience one of the things you don't normally hear is "easily accessible". Yakutat is at the very northern end of what is known as SE Alaska. There are no roads going in and out of Yakutat and the only ways in are by boat and plane. In Alaska the first thing you think about when someone says plane is a float plane. Yakutat is actually served by Alaskan Airlines which drops in a commercial plane twice a day. If you plan it right you can leave San Francisco or LAX in the early morning and be fishing in Yakutat by noon. Yakutat Charters is the premier Fishing Charter business based in Yakutat. They have 5 fully equipped fishing boats with all the latest gear and electronics. Scott Chadwick is the owner of Yakutat Charter and has been living and working in Yakutat most of his life. He is also one of the best halibut fishermen you will find and knows the waters off Yakutat as well as anyone. Yakutat is considered Alaska's most productive Halibut fishing destination and you can keep 2 Halibut a day in 2020 verses just 1 in most of the other Alaskan fishing destinations. Fish in excess of 100 pounds are very common and the average size of Halibut caught in Yakutat is 39 pounds, this is about 10 pounds more than the next best destination. The waters off Yakutat also hold King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Lingcod and various Rockfish, which Scott also fishes for. There is always something to catch in Yakutat. In this episode, I speak with Dan Cannon, Tongass Forest Program Manager with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council. We discuss proposed old growth logging, the Roadless Rule, the importance of the Tongass and some of the politics surrounding the issues. In the next episode, I will speak with Andrew Thoms, the Executive Director with the Sitka Conservation Society where we will go into greater detail on the resource and what logging would mean for the local economy. Add this saga to the growing list of attacks on our public lands where local and national consensus is ignored and multi-national corporation's interests are being served. Never mind the harm and trauma to Native American tribes living in the region who depend on the land for their subsistence. Americans everywhere should be outraged. Extractor's wish lists are being given top priority. Since interviewing Dan, the USDA has released their long awaited draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Tongass on October 15th. There are six alternatives. The first alternative leaves the Roadless Rule in place. The other five involve the logging of old growth forest with increasing levels of eligible take at each step. Alternative two would convert 18,000 acres of old growth to suitable timberland. Once you get up to Alternative Six (the option Trump is advocating for) all 9.2 million acres of existing designated roadless areas would be converted to timberland, exposing 165,000 acres of old growth to logging. Americans everywhere should be outraged. You can submit your comments here akroadlessrule@fs.fed.us Please tell the USFS to keep the Roadless Rule in place for the Tongass (Alternative One). Comments are due by December 17th, 2019. Thanks for listening. On this episode I sit down with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions to talk about their recent Sitka Blacktail hunt in SE Alaska.  This was a true DIY adventure hunt, on public land with over the counter tags.  They picked a remote island in Tongass National Forest and tackled the Alaskan wilderness head on.  They worked through a few obstacles of course.  Things like steep mountains, rugged terrain, biting bugs, and one lost quiver of arrows.  But I'll let them tell the story…… Enjoy the podcast.
