How often we allow people to treat us badly because we're living in hope and a fantasy land. Bumping into someone from the past at Shoreditch House who ghosted her (and why she is proud of herself). My admiration of Travis Alabanza runs deep. They were one of the first people to say yes to me and Busy Being Black at a time of tremendous uncertainty for me, and our 2018 conversation remains a firm favourite with listeners. The wisdom and insights Travis shared on art, gender, race and self-awareness are as relevant and salient today as then. I find them refreshing, not least for the ways they engage with the spectacle of curiosity that confronts them and trans folks daily. Travis reproaches with sass, or critique or silence: a questioning back that asks, ultimately, whether the rest of us know the role we play in the ongoing hostilities facing trans people. But Travis' work is not only, always or forever work about their experience as a trans person in a transphobic world, nor do they create to explain; which is perhaps most beautifully expressed in a statement made to Travis by writer and friend Kuchenga: "This is for us, baby, not for them." At the heart of Travis' new book, None of the Above, is a call to keep questioning who we are when no one is watching. None of the Above is available to pre-order from Gays the Word, the UK's oldest LGBTQ bookshop. This conversation was recorded live at Shoreditch House in East London in May 2022, in front of an audience of friends, family and Busy Being Black listeners. A special thank you to Khaleel Johnson at Soho House, and to Matt Noades and his team at Anvil Audio. About Busy Being Black Busy Being Black is the podcast exploring how we live in the fullness of our queer Black lives. When Tom Dixon fell into the design scene in the 1980s he viewed himself as very much outside of the establishment. His work was experimental and he formed a collective with other young designers like Thomas Heatherwick to create what they wanted. But he quickly became noticed, then lauded, then part of the establishment, then its figurehead, designing iconic products like his Copper Ball pendant, creating the interiors for Shoreditch House and Sea Containers House, and running an empire at Coal Drops Yard in London's King's Cross. Here, he talks about how he did it.Plus Eleanor Nadimi from One Night Eight Five, a textile and accessory company that launched in 2016, shares her experience of setting up an interiors brand. World premiere of Sweet Sorrow, David's new novel, at the Savoy on Feb 11, 2019. Back in 2009, when we were at Shoreditch House, David Nicholls took to the stage – okay we didn’t have a stage, we had a stool - and made us all fall in love with Dexter and Emma. One Day went on to do quite well. Five years after that he took us all round Europe and to the breaking heart of a couple falling out of love in the middle of their midlife crisis. Five years later – and fresh from the searing Emmy-nominated success of adapting the Patrick Melrose novels – he returns to the Salon to premiere his new novel. Sweet Sorrow is both sweet and sorrowful, sometimes more, sometimes less, but always enchanting. It is the story of one life-changing summer for sixteen-year-old Charlie Lewis. Charlie is the kind of boy you don’t remember in the school photograph: ‘my distinctive feature was a lack of distinction’. School is not good and home is even worse - he’s stuck with his depressed father. Suddenly Fran Fisher bursts into his life – gorgeous, clever and properly a bit posh. But if Charlie wants to be with Fran, he risks the censure of his buddies and steps out from the safety of average anonymity into the spotlight. Fran is in an am drama production of Romeo & Juliet. To find love Charlie must risk tragedy. The price of hope is Shakespeare. Hark, it’s the return of David Nicholls! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

https://soundcloud.com/ben-pearce-productions To many, Ben Pearce’s name is synonymous with ‘What I Might Do’, his oddly anthemic deep-house debut that dominated club floors across the world in 2012. Whilst this is an easy correlation to make (the track went platinum in Europe, reached #7 in the UK charts and was the most Shazamed tracked of 2013 in the UK), those who have followed him since the beginning can testify that he is so much more than that. Ben is very much an underground DJ first-and-foremost, aided in no small part by his vast musical knowledge and the ability to play across a wide range of musical genres. His skills behind the decks have not gone un-noticed, as shown by high-profile sets alongside the likes of Simian Mobile Disco, Tensnake and Claptone. On the rise, Ben was named DJ Mag's Best Breakthrough Producer in 2013 and in the following year further proved that he's deserving of the coveted award. Becoming increasingly known for his remixing abilities as well as his own original productions, remixing for Le Youth, Kwabs and Tender Games all in 2014. He collaborated with Black Orange Juice ‘Predictable’ for MTA, a soulfully smooth single that equally showcases lyrical flair and production talent, as well as release the underground club infused 'Lego' EP on his own label. The latter end of 2014 saw Ben launch of his new disco inspired project The Sextape Series. Which incorporates a number of free mix tapes, cheeky edits and a sequence of Sextape inspired parties. These specific nights see Ben playing extended funk-infused sets across a range of characterful, intimate venues in the UK. Through 2015, Ben has continued to tour around the globe, starting the year in Australia before embarking on a tour of North America in March. Starting in Miami where Ben played a special Sextape Series set, the tour also took in dates in Montreal, Texas and Mexico City. Having appeared for the brand last year, Ben was given a recurring residency for ANTS at Ushuaia and additionally appeared for We Love… and Magna Carta at Sankeys Ibiza. Not to mention the inaugural Creamfields Festival in Ibiza at Ushuaia. Away from the White Isle, Ben played at the first ever Lost Village Festival as well as Parklife, We Are FSTVL and the Ruis Festival in the Netherlands. Revered for his classic disco sets, the legendary Giorgio Moroder also enlisted Ben to play a special set at the launch party for his new album at Shoreditch House in May - an event that also served as a fundraiser for Bridges for Music. Alongside a hectic touring schedule, Ben has also provided remixes for the likes of IYES and Hayden James on ‘Something About You’ in 2015, as well as standout collaborative record ’Nothing Ever Hurts' with Shadowchild and featuring vocalist Laurel - a track that reinforced Ben’s penchant for blending astute melody with peak-time bass. Ben also successfully runs his own label imprint Purp & Soul which has celebrated its 12th release with regular artist showcases and releases. After a massive couple of years, Ben has shown that he’s not one to rest on his laurels and 2015 is sure to further Ben Pearce’s status as one of the top DJs and producers in the industry.

Yes, those lovely people at Chloé invited me back as DJ and music consultant for their Spring 2008 show and party in London. The event took place on the top floor of Shoreditch House. The production team covered and heated the roof-top pool area and built catwalks across the water for the show. Guests were then invited to sit down for dinner. I played through welcoming cocktails and also sequenced the music for the catwalk. Preparing for the show was more difficult than last year as I was in LA shooting some cinema commercials. To get things approved by Chloé I posted tracks online from my hotel room and sequenced the music on the Mac during the flight back to London. The night was a fantastic success. The attached audio is the sassy, sexy catwalk mix of disco, rock, funk and more. Many thanks to Frederique and Kat at Chloé. 30.1MB - AAC file - 192kbps
