Before Eli Roth's “Thanksgiving,” one of the only slasher films that took place on this holiday was 1987's “Blood Rage” starring Mark Soper as twin brothers, Terry and Todd. Tune in to hear all about how he approached playing these two characters, what it was like working with Louise Lasser (who played the very eccentric mother), whether his iconic line, “It's not cranberry sauce!” was scripted or improvised, and his interpretation of the film's wild ending.

While New Nightmare has its moments of creativity and strong performances, it ultimately falls short of delivering the thrills and chills that fans expect from a Nightmare on Elm Street film. It's a thought-provoking entry in the franchise, but one that lacks the cohesive storytelling and visceral scares that made the original films classics. For die-hard fans of the series, it may be worth a watch, but for those seeking a truly terrifying experience, it may leave you wanting more.

Send us a textWhat happens when a self-referential slasher comedy can't quite figure out what it wants to be? "Hell of a Summer," the directorial debut from Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, promised to do for summer camp slashers what "Scream" did for the entire genre – but stumbles in its execution despite some genuine bright spots. This week, we dive into this curious $3 million indie horror comedy that follows Jason, a dedicated 24-year-old camp counselor who returns to Camp Pineway rather than pursuing a responsible legal career. When counselors start getting picked off by a killer in a devil mask, the film attempts to balance humor, horror, and character work with varying degrees of success. While the cinematography impresses throughout – especially considering the challenges of night shooting on a limited budget – the narrative and character development leave much to be desired. The true revelation of the film is co-director Billy Bryk's performance as Bobby, whose scene-stealing comedic moments provide the film's biggest laughs and most memorable sequences. We break down why his character works so well while others (including Wolfhard's own character) fail to make an impression. From puzzling killer motivations to inconsistent death scenes, we unpack where this promising concept went wrong while celebrating the moments where it actually delivers.Whether you're a horror fan curious about this new addition to the slasher comedy subgenre or just enjoy our dissections of films that don't quite reach their potential, this episode offers plenty to sink your teeth into. Join us for a thoughtful, funny conversation about "Hell of a Summer" – a film that might not be great, but certainly gave us more to talk about than we expected.Lovingly written by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

In this fun episode of Drinks and a Movie, I welcomes special guests Jerry Lourenco and Rich Mallery from the Horror Heads podcast to sip, savor, and slash their way through a double shot of whiskey and horror. We kick things off by tasting Nelson's Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey followed by Maker's Mark “Heart Release” 2024, —two very different expressions with rich histories and bold profiles. Expect tasting notes, barrel talk, and a little whiskey-fueled banter. Then, we dive deep into the eerie atmosphere of the underrated 70s slasher gem "Alice, Sweet Alice" (1976). From religious overtones and masked terror to Brooke Shields' early role, we explore why this cult classic still sends chills decades later. Whether you're a whiskey lover, horror film fanatic, or both, this episode brings the perfect blend of bold spirits and bloody cinema.Follow Horror Heads Podcast HereFollow Drinks and a Movie Podcasts socials Here

For nearly a century, horror films have told us a story—one of terror, of survival, of the inevitable confrontation between innocence and brutality. But there's one story, in particular, that has evolved in ways both subtle and seismic: the story of the Final Girl.It begins in the shadows, in the screams of Janet Leigh, in the wide, terror-stricken eyes of Jamie Lee Curtis. The Final Girl is the last one standing, the one who fights back, who outwits the killer, who survives. But survival is never just survival, is it? It's transformation. It's a reckoning. And it's a mirror reflecting the anxieties of the era.In this episode of Sitting in the Dark, Kyle Olson takes us on a journey—a journey that moves from the early days of horror's damsels-in-distress to the fierce, unrelenting heroines of the modern era. With Pete Wright, Tommy Metz III, and Kynan Dias by his side, the discussion turns to three films that redefine the trope for the 21st century: Prey (2022), Sweetheart (2019), and The Invisible Man (2020).What do these films tell us about the evolution of gender in horror? How does the Final Girl of today differ from her predecessors? And perhaps most intriguingly, why are these stories—stories written by men—resonating so deeply with audiences yearning for something different? From the jungles of Prey to the desolate island of Sweetheart to the omnipresent, unseen menace of The Invisible Man, this is an exploration of fear, of power, and of the ghosts that refuse to be ignored. Because in horror, as in life, survival is never just about making it to the end. It's about what you become along the way.Film SundriesWatch the movies discussed:Sweetheart: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdThe Invisible Man: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdPrey: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdHer Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film by Carol J. Scream! Louder! Scream is a 1996 horror film directed by Wes Craven. It follows a group of teenagers (led by Neve Campbell) and a reporter (Courtney Cox) that are getting attacked by a killer wearing a common Halloween mask. The film is known for helping revitalize the slasher genre in the 90s and for being a deconstruction of its tropes. Despite coming out right before Christmas and not being expected to be a hit, the film ended up being a runaway success that has since spawned five sequels and a TV series. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mediaobscura/support
