My guest today waited three years to adopt—and then welcomed three kids in three years through domestic adoption. In this episode, Emily shares her story and her growing understanding of the both/and of adoption. God has used that to deepen her relationships with her children's birth family as well as to serve foster and adoptive families through her church. Her encouragement is that we would not walk the foster or adoption journey alone. Lean into God, he sees and understands! Lean into others, and find encouragement and strength to keep going. People’s dreams change before their behavior does. Our guests, Codreaming founders Emily Cook and Kyle Napierkowski share evidence from their research including how large databases show that dreams about Donald Trump shifted long before his favorability ratings did. They also talk about how dreams reveal that the concerns of people in their 20s and 30s are foundationally different from older people and the evidence that this is not merely because of their age, but because of generationally changing priorities. After the break, we take a call from Lee from New York who talks about his 50 years of dream records, and we get into a conversation about demographics and the ethics of dream collection. BIOS: As an Organizational Psychologist, Emily Cook pioneers integrating psychological science and dream analysis into business strategy. Her research is published in leading academic journals, and her work has been featured in The Independent, Financial Times, and Fox News. Kyle Napierkowski is a leader in ad-tech, AI, and data science, and has created data-driven impact for startups like PagerDuty and for large enterprises like Coca Cola and American Express. He develops methodologies for using dream data to harness creativity and identify consumer trends. He holds degrees in Management and certifications in psychological and coaching modalities. Send us a textPreventative legal advocacy is reshaping the future of child welfare, and Emily Cook is at the forefront. As a Senior Staff Attorney at the Barton Child Law and Policy Center, Emilie Cook shares her journey from traditional legal practice to becoming a champion for systemic change. This episode explores how neglect, often rooted in poverty, not abuse, constitutes a significant issue within the child welfare system. We unpack the racial disparities faced by marginalized communities and how preventive measures can address these injustices by offering legal support early on, tackling social determinants of health, and redefining systemic approaches for a more equitable future. We discuss the effectiveness of the current child welfare system, highlighting the unnecessary trauma caused by child-parent separations. Emily shares insights into the barriers families face, such as housing and resource instability, that can perpetuate involvement in the system. Our discussion is a call to action for community and nonprofit leaders to embrace community-based solutions, fostering resilience and stability rather than perpetuating cycles of trauma and poverty. Emilie's work in Georgia and around the country exemplifies the power of collaboration, as she builds networks to advance preventative advocacy and support families before they reach crisis points.Emilie's transformative work isn't just theoretical; it's a practical approach to reimagining support systems that serve families better. We explore her efforts in creating a learning cohort dedicated to preventive legal advocacy and discuss the importance of evaluating program outcomes to secure sustainable funding. With a focus on effectiveness, Emily's initiatives demonstrate how legal interventions can address systemic issues like housing instability, proving that change is not only necessary but also achievable. Did you do anything fun on your summer holidays? The mathematicians in this podcast spent some of their summer helping to create the perfect smoothie, getting the most sugar out of sugar cane, and attacking other important real-world problems. They did all this attending the Graduate Modelling Camp, which is organised every year by the Newton Gateway to Mathematics in Cambridge. The camp gives early career mathematicians a chance to experience life as a mathematical modeller by challenging them to solve problems posed by industry. We talk to Chris Breward, who has been helping to run the modelling camp for many years, to PhD students Emily Cook, Julian Glover, and Michael Smah, who attended this year's camp, and to Ashleigh Hutchinson who took part as a mentor. They all enjoyed the camp immensely — find out why in this podcast! This content was produced as part of our collaboration with the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) and the Newton Gateway to Mathematics. The INI is an international research centre in Cambridge which attracts leading mathematicians from all over the world. The Newton Gateway is the impact initiative of the INI, which engages with users of mathematics. You can find all the content from the collaboration here.

Emily Cook, writer, Doctor Who Magazine staffer and Tweetalong organiser extraordinaire shares her favourite things about Partners in Crime, Catherine Tate's first episode as a series regular in Doctor Who. In this episode of The Perfect Property, Juli talks with Emily Cook, an award-winning lender. Emily has over 20 years of experience as a lender and now works with Fidelity Bank in the Atlanta area. Emily provides valuable information for people looking to purchase a home and covers where, how, and when to find a mortgage. She and Juli discuss loan programs, common mortgage myths, credit scores, and tips for working with a lender. What You'll Learn: · The truth about down-payment assistance programs (2:24)· Do student loans or medical loans count against you? (5:00)· VA loans (6:22)· Are car payments counted against you? (7:20)· Medical loans (8:23)· How is credit score calculated? (9:08)· Going in on a loan with someone (10:41)· Do you have to pay off all your debt before you speak to a lender? (12:09)· A success story of one of Emily's clients (13:03)· How often should you check your credit? (14:39)· Understanding credit reports from Credit Karma (16:30)· The best advice for someone starting on the path of home ownership (17:55)· Constant changes in the mortgage industry (19:05)· Why you should shop around for a lender (20:30)· The importance of good communication with your lender (23:37)· Rate volatility and hearing from your lender (24:23)· Why you shouldn't hide things from your lender (25:32)· Getting the necessary paperwork to the lender (26:18)· Don't buy things during the lending process (28:37)· The process of using gifts from relatives for the down payment (30:01) Key Points:“If you think you're going to buy a house within a year or even two years, it's good to go ahead and get preapproved.” “There are typically three bureaus that report scores: Transunion, Equifax, and Experian. Most lenders use the middle score of the three, so not the high score or the low score; whichever one falls in the middle.”“On an FHA loan, a 580 would be the absolute minimum score that you could have. On a conventional loan, they want to see a 620. On a VA loan, it will also go as low as 580.”“They have to look at many factors, it's not just a credit score that's going to determine your loan qualifications.”“It's impossible to get prequalified without pulling your credit, because everything hinges on those scores.”“One of the myths I've heard over and over is people think that if you have your credit pulled too many times, it will negatively impact your score. This is true and false.”“Don't be afraid to allow your top three lenders to all pull your credit as long as you do it in the same time frame, within a thirty-day window.”“If you bought a house five years ago, don't expect that exactly how it happened five years ago is the way it is now.” Episode Update: Fidelity Bank is now Ameris Bank (2020)Links: Juli's Email: juli@theperfectproperty.comJuli's Phone Number: 404-668-8975 (call or text)The Perfect Property Website. www.theperfectproperty.com
