THIS EPISODE: After 357 days, the GOAT (Serena Williams) has returned. The birth of this podcast coincides with the twilight of Serena's career, but what can we expect from her as she makes her comeback playing doubles with Ons Jabuer this week in Eastbourne? Rafael Nadal has also arrived in London fresh off a fifth place finish at the Balearic Golf Championship, but familiar questions about his foot and recent grass court record linger. Elsewhere Naomi Osaka and Sebastian Korda as well as Eugenie Bouchard (remember her?) have withdrawn due to injury and lack of ranking points, respectively. With those three making up only a fraction of the notable Wimbledon absences, we look ahead to the four warmup tournaments this week with an eye towards the field of contenders at the year's third major. Over the past 14 years, Marc Lucero has emerged as one of the preeminent coaches for budding stars. He worked for the USTA from 2008-2012, coaching players of all ages, from 7 year olds to professional players. In his role at the USTA, Lucero worked and assisted with America's top young prospects like Nicole Gibbs, Ryan Harrison, Sam Querrey, and others. He also ran Regional Training Center camps around the country, working with players and coaches to identify and build relationships with future prospects. Since then, Lucero has worked privately with professionally players Eugenie Bouchard and Alison Riske, helping both to career high rankings in their time with him, as well as top American juniors players. Most recently he was the coach of Shelby Rogers, whom he helped reach a career-high rank of No.48 in the world in January of 2017. In 2016 Rogers reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, becoming the first American other than Venus and Serena Williams to reach this round since 2001. In 2017 Rogers was part of the United States Fed Cup Championship team, winning the deciding match with partner Coco Vandeweghe on the road in Belarus. Those accomplishments, along with guiding Rogers to one of her most consistently impressive years on tour, resulted in Lucero being named 2017 Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Touring Coach of the Year. Since December 2019 he was coached Steve Johnson. He is a co-founder of First Break Academy, a nonprofit program providing tennis, multi-sport, and educational programming to children in the Carson area. He also does television throughout the year, providing on-air commentary and in-match analysis at events like the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open, and World Team Tennis. Prior to working for the USTA, Lucero was an assistant coach for the women's team at Princeton University. He attended Boston College where he was captain of the men's tennis team, leading the Eagles in wins in his time there. He was also a 3 time Big East Conference Academic All Star. Lucero graduated with a degree in Economics from the Carroll School of Management Honors Program. Lucero grew up in San Diego, California. When he is not on tour, and enjoys surfing, yoga, and reading, but most of all spending time in his role as a new dad.

A key piece of advice was to make that mindset shift from using your phone as a tool instead of a toy.

There are quite a few key tournaments going on right now, especially Dubai (WTA), Doha (ATP), and Marseille (ATP). We dive into Muguruza shining in Doha, Elise's epic comeback, and the unlikely semifinal between Krejcikova and Teichmann, without forgetting some obstacles these players had to pass to get there, including Coco Gauff, the teen American star who proved yet again what an asset she is to the pro tour. We then discuss Doha, which undoubtedly included a recap of Roger Federer's return to the tour a couple of days ago! Our RF inspired outfits are a key element of this conversation, along with our analysis of Federer's post-unforced error laughs, and his outlook on the next few months, and focus towards the grass court season. We preview both the Doha semifinals and all four semifinalists, discussing “loved-by-everyone” RBA and Fritz's revenge vs. Shapovalov in the quarterfinals. We also unpack everything behind Basilashvili's domestic violence case, providing our perspectives on the ATP's shameful lack of action and the tennis world's continued ignorance of domestic abuse. We round out the tennis talk with a discussion about whether Tsitsipas can take the Marseille title for a third year in a row or if the winner of Medvedev vs. Sinner or a bottom half dark horse will stand in his way. Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about the tournaments in Santiago and Guadalajara; we talk Holger Rune carrying Danish teenage success into another week and wildcard Eugenie Bouchard pulling through. After that, Aces and Double Faults are back! Our Ace for this episode is Serena Williams speaking out to support her good friend Meghan Markle following her blockbuster Oprah interview, and the Double Fault is a controversial and wacky Instagram post from (big surprise) the one and only Benoit Paire. Tennis is never without drama, and this episodes dishes out on all of it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/holdontoyourracket/message
