Travel with us as we venture to Scotland in the Summer. The sun is out late, the temperature is warm (for Scotland), and the grass is so so green. In this return to Scotland, I venture with Keely, my friend who is also a post-grad candidate for Public History and Cultural Heritage. We book another tour with Rabbie's to venture into the West Highlands, with our base of operations in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. From driving through Glencoe, swimming in Caribbean-blue waters on the Isle of Iona, and watching puffins fly on the Isle of Staffa, we got a wonderfully raw experience with the magic of mother nature. But of course... shenanigans ensue including losing the keys to our van on a ferry and said van breaking down 4 hours from Edinburgh leaving us stranded... there is no shortage of hijinks during this trip, that's for sure! Stāsta komponiste Anna Fišere Vai zini, ka Hamiltona mauzolejā Skotijā var dzirdēt vienu no pasaulē garākajām atbalsīm, kāda iespējama iekštelpās? Rosanna Staffa is an Italian-born playwright and author.  Her debut novel, The War Ends At Four, is a beautifully rendered tale about an Italian acupuncturist in Minneapolis who returns home to Milan and rediscovers all that she left behind, who she is, and what her life is really about. I've read The War Ends at Four and found it to be a moving and poignant personal story about a woman trying to find herself.  I highly recommend it to you. Rosanna's work has been featured in Gargoyle Magazine, the Brevity Nonfiction Blog, The Sun Magazine, The Examined Life Journal, and JuxtaProse. Her essay, Holy, is a prize winner in the TSR Review and nominated for the 2022 Notable in Best American Essays. Other writing can be found in the Best Small Fictions Anthology 2021. This episode is a chat with Cressida Cowell, author of the How To Train Your Dragon books, the Wizards of Once series and Which Way to Anywhere. Cressida grew up in London where her Dad, Michael Hare, had significant roles in several well known organisations. In the 1970's Michael bought the island of Little Colonsay, which lies between Ulva and Staffa, which was to become the family's summer home. The island, it's history, topography and setting had a profound affect on young Cressida's imagination and her summers would be spent in a reverie of story making, listening to the tales her Dad would tell her of the people of these islands' past. These experiences lead to Cressida becoming an author, and not just any author. Her works have been translated into 38 languages and sold tens of millions of copies around the world. There are film and tv adaptations of her work. In our time together we talked about her childhood memories of Little Colonsay and the people who helped her family to build their home there. We talk about her father and his love of nature. We explore the impact that the island had on her imagination, and how that lead to her career. Cressida goes on to talk about her maternal Grandfather, Alan Hare, and his experiences in the 2nd World War in Albania and how that generation of people influenced her writing. We then talk about the importance of the natural world and the nature of climate change. I owe a big thank you to my dear friend Colin Morrison for putting me in contact with Cressida. Colin and his family run Turus Mara, which, departing from Ulva Ferry, to my mind, is the best way to see Staffa, Fingal's Cave and to meet the puffins on Lunga for some puffin therapy. See the links in the episode notes for more details. Most importantly of all though at the end of this episode Cressida kindly took the time to answer three questions from Lachlan, one of her young readers who lives in Dervaig, who sent me some questions to ask. Thanks for listening! Episode links and more on whatwedointhewinter.com

Join Annie and Jenny on an adventure to one of the most iconic islands in all of Scotland: Fingal's Cave, or known in Gaelic as An Uaimh Bhinn. Jenny flexes her geology skills as she explains the complex deep time story of how this incredible island came to form on the earth through volcanic activity. We explore the massive mythology that connects Fingal's Cave to the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim and wonder at the legends of Fionn mac Cumhaill, sometimes anglicised as Finn MacCool. We cover the infamous lore of Fionn's feud with Scottish giant Benandonner, as well as a less-known love story alternative of how the astounding Giant's Causeway was formed. Was this incredible geologic feature formed by war, or love? Finally, Annie has dug up a strange little piece of local folklore about an infamous monster that is said to use Fingal's Cave for some pretty gruesome deeds. There is no other island quite like Staffa in all the world. Synopsis On today's date in 1829, the German composer Felix Mendelssohn and his friend, Karl Klingemann, were on the North Sea bound for Glasgow. Klingemann was not impressed with Scotland and wrote home that the rough North Sea passage had made most of the passengers sick – with one remarkable exception. “An 82-year old woman,” he wrote, “sat calmly by the smoke stack, warming herself in the cold wind. She was determined to see Staffa before she died. Staffa, with its silly basalt columns and caves, is in all the picture books. So, we were put into boats and clambered past the hissing sea on stumps of columns up to the odiously celebrated Fingal's Cave. I must say, never did such green and roaring waves pound in a stranger cave. The many pillars make the inside resemble a monstrous organ. Black, resounding, and utterly without any purpose at all…” Well, perhaps not utterly without purpose, since Felix Mendelssohn sent a letter home to HIS family on August 7 which included a scrap of musical notation. “To give you an idea of how strange I felt,” wrote Mendelssohn, “this music occurred to me.” It was the opening theme of what would become his concert overture titled “The Hebrides, or Fingal's Cave.” Music Played in Today's Program Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) –The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave) (Overture BBC Symphony; Sir Colin Davis, cond.) Well, to be precise, today's crossword is a work of David Steinberg, but it definitely is also a WORK_OF_ART. There were so many great answers, it's hard to single them out, but we certainly appreciated the artistry in working both BLUR and SLUR into the grid, as well as the tactical deployment of WHAMO!. The clues were also nicely done: 24D, Bolt for the finish line?, USAIN; 43D, Put down, WRITE (woah!); and 42D, Latin lovers, officially speaking, POPES (double woah!). Truly an elegant puzzle, definitely worth 5 squares on the JAMCR scale. In other news, it's Fun Fact Friday, and for those of you who want to read more about STAFFA, we have you covered.

A Scottish Podcast About Scotland! This week Rory is emptying his bag of wee Scottish stories all over Jonny's unsuspecting earholes. We talk about the amazing and awe-inspiring Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa and how it was created by an ancient Irish giant dressed as a baby. Also, in today's mixed bag, is the legends and lore around Scotland's healing Clootie Wells. Not feeling well? Just hang some old laundry on a tree near some water. And finally we get into the amazing Dinosaur footprints that can be found near Staffin on the Isle of Skye, and the weirdos who don't seem to be impressed by footprints made by giant reptiles millions of years ago.Get your walking stick and a raincoat because your going on a tour of Scotland with the TDN lads. SláinteCONTACT:Instagram: thistledopodTwitter: @thistledopodFacebook: www.facebook.com/thistledopodEmail: thistledonicelypod@gmail.comwebsite & sources: https://www.thistledonicelypod.com/SOURCES https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/munlochy/clootiewell/index.htmlBygone Church Life in ScotlandBy William Andrews https://www.explore-inverness.com/what-to-do/outdoors/munlochy-clootie-well/https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-60125288#https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/clootie-wellhttps://www.nature.scot/dinosaur-sites-skye-be-given-official-protectionhttps://www.atlasobscura.com/places/skyes-dinosaur-footprintshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcogD-hHEYshttps://www.staffatours.com/tours/https://www.wildernessscotland.com/blog/scotlands-giants-causeway-fingals-cave/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fingal%27s_Cave#Historyhttps://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/unique-experiences-map/seeing-a-unique-cave/https://www.lindahall.org/felix-mendelssohn/https://interactive.britishart.yale.edu/critique-of-reason/360/staffa-fingals-cavehttps://www.atlasobscura.com/places/fingal-s-cavehttps://www.pressreader.com/uk/scottish-daily-mail/20220122/282492892074009

No matter how far you go in life, you'll never be able to get away from one person: you! Instead, moving through life and through the world is one of the ways we find ourselves, as many of the guests on Being All of Us's first season have done. And part of the journey is finding how we can belong in the world and leave it better than we found it. This week's guest is Almendra Staffa-Healey, who was born into movement and bravery. The child of an artist, she talks about growing up in Spain and in the United States. That in-between feeling led her to find belonging and understand loneliness and how she (and we) need to open our heart to connect with one another. She also shares the power of anger and the natural presence of sexual energy, and how important it is for us to embrace differences in ourselves and the world. And as different as you may be, I believe you will find a part of yourself to embrace in our conversation. The journey to being all of us begins with you. Come join us! We Talk About: 2:00 minute mark – A child of bravery and movement 6:30 – Third culture kids… 10:30 – And finding belonging 15:00 – Growing through loneliness and sharing a collective story 21:45 – Addressing Privilege 30:00 – Using guilt for good 34:30 – Embracing emotions 41:30 – Where do we want to grow – full recognition and embracing differences 50:00 – How and when sexual energy manifests 55:30 – Seeking out the divine in us all Challenge of the Week: Look for the divine spark in everyone you see and meet, try to see that part of you that connects you to everyone else. In this episode I talk with Iain Morrison of Penmore. Iain runs Turus Mara with his son Colin and wife Pat, and sails daily from Ulva Ferry to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We talk about growing up in Penmore, going to school at Mornish, where his Mum was the teacher. We talk about his parents, and a little about his grandparents. At one point Iain talks about the evictions, these of course are the clearances. References are made to Dykes & Agnes, Marky Dan and many more famous local characters. As a young man Iain was in the merchant navy, and we talk quite a bit about his travels and life at sea. At one point we talk about the mortality of illegitimate children in the past, which was a real eye opener for me and quite shocking, so just a wee heads up for you that we go into that topic at a certain moment. There are quite a few terms that I found I needed a bit of definition on, such as Butterworth Watch and Rhumb line, so do check out the website for these and other links. We met over here at my house on a very windy day, and at certain points you can hear the wind roaring away in the background. Thanks for listening! www.whatwedointhewinter.com

To view the VR experience in 360 on your smartphone paste the following link into your search browser: https://youtu.be/RHt6QIJI9cU For the first time, a virtual reality experience and radio documentary will bring to life the ethereal magic of Fingal's Cave - the awesome natural structure on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Using cutting-edge technology, which captures not only the acoustics of the melodic cave, but its awe-inspiring visual scale and beauty, this Between the Ears takes you to a site of natural beauty that has inspired Felix Mendelssohn, Jules Verne, John Keats, August Strindberg and countless others. Featuring a rich cinematic sound experience, we follow the work of Dr Stuart Jeffrey from The Glasgow School of Art’s School of Simulation and Visualisation, and sound designer and composer, Aaron May, as they both – in their own ways - explore the remarkable Fingal's Cave. A few years ago, Stuart and a team of archaeologists from the National Trust for Scotland discovered Bronze Age remains close to the cave and near a 19th-century building that was used by early tourists as a shelter from the elements. We join Stuart on location as he continues the dig and unearths further evidence of a Bronze Age site, and we accompany him into the heart of the cave during different sea states. At certain times, the cave actually sounds musical, and this is the reason why local people named it the ‘musical cave’. Stuart explains that inside the cave there is a natural cognitive dissonance that can be very unsettling, indeed some visitors are left feeling on edge. This is because the resonant sounds of blowing and popping, together with booming waves; create a soundscape that does not match the movement of the waves. During the Romantic period, Fingal's Cave attracted much attention and inspired many musicians, artists and literary figures and poets. Felix Mendelssohn made it ashore in 1829 and was so moved by the unearthly sounds that fill the cave he created the remarkable Hebrides Overture in response. Jules Verne said, "the vast cavern with its mysterious, dark, weed-covered chambers and marvellous basaltic pillars produced upon me a most striking impression and was the origin of my book, Le Rayon Vert”. During the 19th-century era of romanticism and the sublime, the Germans were particularly enthralled by Fingal’s Cave. Not only did they visit, but quirky plays and stories were even set there (including Bride of the Isles about vampires living inside Fingal's Cave). The location’s rich mythology, including that of mermaids and giants, highlights the sublime aspect of the place. Stuart's wider research, a collaboration with Professor Sian Jones at the University of Stirling, is trying to fill in the gap between how the Romantics viewed it - a site of awe - and how we see it today. “We have become dull souls, seeing it only as a nature reserve,” he says. Stuart hopes to change that perception by investigating whether cutting-edge technology can capture a place’s very essence. And this is where composer Aaron May comes into this story. Whereas Stuart has spent many hours within the magnificent natural structure, Aaron has never set foot in Fingal’s Cave. But for this documentary he has created a new musical composition based upon his experience of entering a phenomenally exact virtual reality reconstruction, made by Stuart and his team at Glasgow School of Art. The VR version, features laser scans, photogrammetry and acoustic sound maps. You are able to tour the entire length of the cave and even hear how a piece of music would sound if played within it. A version of this virtual reality experience, complete with Aaron’s composition, will be made available for listeners to explore on their smart phones. And of course, Aaron’s remarkable and evocative soundtrack will feature in the radio documentary. Listeners will be able to access a version of the VR experience using their smart phones and a high-end version, running on an HTC Vive, will showcase at the Edinburgh Festivals in August 2019. For those unable to make the trip to Staffa, it’s the nearest you will get to experiencing the full majesty of the location. When she was younger her family owned Erray farm, outside of Tobermory, which she talks about around 15 minutes into our chat.
Her parents then moved over to Ulva Ferry, from where her father ran boat trips to Staffa. There’s so much detail in Andrena’s conversation, it’s quite remarkable. I don’t really want to spoil it for you, but if you’re interested in ghost stories, and a certain Scottish monster, then this is the episode for you…
The whole What We Do in the Winter project has also been sponsored in kind by the Island Bakery. In the coming months I’m going to pull together an episode on the filming of When 8 Bells Toll, which was made on and around Mull.
I’m looking to chat to anyone who was involved with the filming or anyone who has a particular affection for it.
And, a bit of a long stretch, I know, I’m trying to see if I can get a few minutes to interview Anthony Hopkins about his work on the film.

As these podcasts take quite a lot of time to make, I’m looking to fund raise through donations. So if you feel like it, and are able to, please feel free to donate the cost of a cup of coffee through the website.

Born in Alexandria outside of Dumbarton, Gordon moved to Mull with his Mum, brothers and sister in the late 70’s. In our conversation we cover lots of anecdotes about growing up in Tob, building dens, raiding gardens for fruit, local characters of his youth, the challenges of going to school in Oban, his love of horses, and towards the end of the episode, how he came to work with Nick Gordon, wildlife cameraman. In this episode I talk with James Westland of Tobermory.

Born in a castle near Stirling, James, or Seamus as we know him, grew up around Alloa before going to Uni in St Andrews and then headed off shore and came back to land where he studied Gaelic at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, in Skye. It was at Sabhal Mor that he met Moira, who later became his wife. Eventually they chose to settle on Mull where they live to this day with their family in Tobermory. Our conversation moves between Seamus’ love of geology and the land, and how that journey started for him in the Ochil Hills, how landscape gives off certain feelings, Gaelic music and culture, his working life here on Mull and the geological make up of our islands and why they are so interesting. At the very end we also talk about Seamus’ father in law, the late, much missed Duncan MacGilp. We also have a wee natter in Gaelic at one point in the conversation for a couple of minutes.

In county Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland is the giants causeway. What one Radio Times poll named the fourth greatest wonder of the United Kingdom. 40,000 interlocking basalt columns line the coast, the result of a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. Now it's one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland. Find the complete Giant's Causeway shownotes here. The wind was pretty fierce as bus drove us the 1/2 mile from the visitors center to the Giants Causeway. We were excited. At first glance after exiting the bus, it was beautiful but disappointing. There were a bunch of people milling about on the rocks in a very small area. A big sign and guard halted people from climbing up further on this national wonder. Then I found a passage through the rocks that was overlooked by many of the visitors. On the other side, like crossing through the thin veil, we saw the true majesty of these rocks. Plus a long path along the coast where you could get a better view. When we got back to the visitors center, One of my Invaders told me about the singing rocks they found. That was all cool but what got me excited most about this trip was the legend behind it--Finn MacCool. Finn MacCool was a giant living on the north coast of Ireland. On a clear day you can see the island Staffa in Scotland. There lived a Scottish giant named Benandonner. They taunted one another from afar until finally Finn MacCool tossed long pillars of stone into the water all the way to Scotland, creating a long causeway between the countries. When Finn arrived, he was surprised to find that Benandonner was a lot bigger than Finn. He fled back home and told his wife Oonagh, who came up with a plan. She told Finn to dress like a baby and climb in a crib. When Benandonner knocked on their door Oonagh told him that Finn was out hunting. When Benandonner saw the size of the baby that belonged to Finn and compared it to the human sized Oonagh, he realized Finn must be even bigger than he. So he fled Ireland destroying the Causeway between the two countries. --- If you enjoy this episode, then please post a review on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher.
