Magnus och Heavy Undergrounds redaktionsmedlem Emil Gustavsson pratar om Steve Von Till med utgångspunkt i hans nya skiva "Alone in a world of wounds". Det blir prat om både den, Harvestman och Neurosis och så försöker vi sätta fingret på vari hans storhet som musiker och människa ligger. Låter det nördigt? Så bra. För det är det.
Steve Von Till is the guest in this international edition of Heavy Undergrounds podcast. In a lengthy talk with host Magnus Tannergren he speaks about his new album “Alone in a world of wounds”, the creative forces in his life, his voice, about getting older, Harvestman, doubts, spirituality, nature, about living in northern Idaho and how dark music can bring light into someone's life. You don't want to miss this one.
In terms of Steve Von Till's musical output, this year has been all about Harvestman. The three parts of ‘Triptych', by far his most ambitious project under that guise, were annouced as set to be released via Neurot Recordings on three of 2024's full moons – April 23rd's Pink Moon, July 21st's Buck Moon, and October 17th's Hunter Moon. So, in anticipation of the conclusion of the full piece with 'Triptych: Part Three' coming out in a few days, we sat down with Steve for a great conversation about this endeavour, and we were treated to a full guided tour beyond the veil of this remarkable artist's creative process.
Keith sits down with Steve Von Till to discuss his intro to metal, punk and hardcore, early musical influences, joining Neurosis and the early days of the band, living in San Francisco and how Steve ended up moving to northern Idaho. We also discuss Steve's solo LP "No Wilderness Deep Enough" and the new creative approach he took with the record, Harvestman, the history of the project, Harvestman's Triptych series of LP's, Steve's label Neurot Recordings, the inner workings of the label, Steve's creative process, what's next for Harvestman, his upcoming solo LP and more.
On this episode of Metal on Metal, we sat down with Steve Von Till. Steve is an American based songwriter known for his solo albums, his ambient/drone project Harvestman, and as a member of Neurosis. In this interview, we discuss his latest Harvestman albumTriptych: Part One. We also discuss community radio, country music, DIY work ethic, and Fleetwood Mac. Robert Saler is an Associate Dean for Evaluation and Assessment, Associate Professor of Theology and Culture, and Executive Director of the Center for Pastoral Excellence and the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. Robert is also an author and theologian who specialises in the intersection of faith and modern society, covering pastoral sabbaticals, theology of the cross, and religion's role in today's culture. Steve Von Till from Neurosis introduced me to Robert, an opportunity I'm thankful for, as I've been eager to find a guest who resides at an intersection of extreme metal and faith for the show. It'd be tempting to say this is a different guest from what you are used to, but that isn't true. I was the first journalist to contact Stuart Anstis, who blew the lid off the popular narratives surrounding Cradle of Filth. I'm the only person to interview Trey from Morbid Angel's mother. Across 800 other episodes of the show, you have become familiar with my technique of allowing the guest to brooch topics across all social, political and religious contexts. But this conversation goes beyond typical discussions of faith; it's a deep exploration into his path to spirituality, ministry, and scholarly work in theology. I hope this is the first of many insightful discussions with Robert.
Steve Von Till peels back the layers of his new Harvestman release, Triptych: Part One, revealing the genesis of its captivating opening track, "Psilosynth." Steve discusses the creative process as he intricately integrates guitars, percussion, and synths into a cohesive sonic tapestry, guiding listeners into meditative states of consciousness. He also explores the celestial significance of coordinating the album series' release with specific full moons and how ancient sites, folklore, and ancestral resonance infuse the sonic landscapes of Triptych. Steve sheds light on the significance of the title "Triptych". He reflects on Henry Hablak's artwork as a visual representation of the auditory journey and his hopes for listeners' takeaway from Triptych: Part One. Additionally, he reflects on Neurosis' monumental album, Through Silver in Blood, exploring its enduring influence on today's extreme metal landscape and the pivotal role he played in shaping its sound. https://www.vontill.org/
this episode is sponsored by Betterhelp.com/TheBarnIn 2024, HARVESTMAN, the brainchild of Neurosis' Steve Von Till, embarks on its most ambitious journey yet with the release of Triptych, a three-part album project set to coincide with three full moons throughout the year. With the first installment, Triptych: Part One, set to drop this Tuesday, April 23rd on the Pink Moon via Neurot Recordings, Steve was a recent guest on the Vulgar Display of Podcast in which he talks about the album and creative process.Triptych represents Von Till's exploration of a unique musical approach, weaving together diverse influences and musical elements into a cohesive tapestry that resonates with ancestral echoes. Recorded and mixed at The Crow's Nest in North Idaho, Von Till employs an array of instruments and techniques, including guitars, synths, percussion, and more, to craft each movement with meticulous care. Here are the visualizers for both "Psilosynth" and "Give Your Heart To The Hawk".Part One features guest contributions from luminaries such as Dave French of Yob, Al Cisneros of Sleep and OM fame, and John Goff of Cascadia Bagpiper. With masterful mastering by James Plotkin and striking artwork by Henry Hablak, Triptych: Part One is set to be released on various formats, including LP, CD, and digital platforms, with a special Bone White + Black Galaxy Effect vinyl variant packaged in a unique dub style jacket. At its core, Triptych is a testament to Von Till's deep engagement with the musical lineage that precedes him, offering a glimpse into the primordial forces that shape our collective consciousness. Drawing inspiration from ancient sites and folklore, Triptych is a sonic meditation on the enduring otherworldliness that resides within us all. Triptych invites us to transcend the constraints of time and immerse ourselves in a world where music becomes a portal to the sublime. With Triptych: Part One set to launch on April 23rd, HARVESTMAN invites us to join them on a voyage of sonic discovery, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, and where the echoes of the past reverberate into the future.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

As we said before, we want to give you something special in this run of interviews and this interview with Steve von Till is really something special, because Steve sat down and thought for himself which ten records could define Neurot Recordings best for him. And he came up with a really mighty list: Great Falls, Deafkids, UFOMAMMUT, YOB, Amenra, Kowloon Walled City, Grails, Justin K. Broadrick's FINAL, Vágtázó Halottkémek and Zeni Geva! What a list! We talked about these records and also used these as starting points to talk about other Neurot releases and artists! Enjoy this interview and make sure to come back tomorrow for another amazing interview!
No Wilderness Deep Enough was surely a different record for Steve von Till - as he also points out in this interview. Wait - interview with Von Till? Yes! We were very fortunate to talk to the man himself, a mere 14 hours before he left for Europe where he will be touring for several weeks starting on Thursday, July 27, in Krakow. When listening to the record one surely noticed right away how different this record was from earlier SvT records such as As The Crow Flies or A Grave is a Grim Horse - for it basically didn't feature any track with a centerstage guitar line. Even more, the record wasn't conceived on the guitar. No the tracks came into being in a very important surrounding for von Till and their core was done in a very different way. Want to know more? More about that and what we can expect on the upcoming tour? About his opinion of Mark Lanegan and David Eugene Edwards? Ólafur Arnalds and Jóhann Jóhannsson? Then check out this interview!
Steve Von Till is an American musician, songwriter, educator, and poet. He is best known as a singer and guitarist in the highly influential and genre defying collective, Neurosis, which has been credited with changing the face of heavy music over the last 35 years. Since 1999 Von Till has composed and recorded five solo albums of his unique style of sonic composition. Under the guise of his alter ego, Harvestman, Von Till has recorded several rural psych albums including the film score for the Italian thriller, H2Odio. He oversees the fiercely independent record label, Neurot Recordings, from a pole barn outside his home in the forests of North Idaho where he also teaches elementary school. Harvestman: 23 Untitled Poems and Collected Lyrics, released in 2020 is his first book of published poetry. Jeff and I had the privilege to speak with Steve on the heels of a European tour beginning in August. We speak to Steve about his touring band and plunge into an extended history of the present and past. In a very organic dialogue, we learn about his early years as a serious tape trader and zine owner. Focusing on his two favorite bands from the mid-80s, Neurosis and Christ on Parade, Steve tells us the story of how he met Dave Edwardson and joined his dream band in 1989. He shares many stories, and we soon realize we are all huge music nerds. We then have a fascinating discussion of the meaning of the drone and what Brian Eno recently described as the power of surrender in ambient music. Steve shares how surrender has long been central to his own creative process as part of Neurosis and his solo works. Along the way, we listen to music from Neurosis keyboards and electronics wizard, Noah Lands' new band Tension Span's incredible record "The Future Died Yesterday" released on Neurot Recordings in 2022. We also listen to "Trial" by Tribes of Neurot, a song with deep and profound meaning to Jeff. And end on a crescendo when Jeff asks Steve about the Hungarian cosmic sound geniuses, Galloping Corners—a band that Jeff holds near and dear. Steve shares an unforgettable story recording with the Galloping Corners vocalist, Grandpierre Attila, during a late night session after Neurosis played with the legendary band in Budapest.
John Goff, also known as Cascadia Bagpiper, has been a professional bagpiper since 1984. Originally from San Diego, he currently resides in the Pacific Northwest and plays memorials, funerals, weddings, and various celebrations. John is also an experimental musician, playing guitar, synthesizer and bagpipes with a wide range of musicians including Crash Worship, Neurosis, Merzbow, Steve Von Till, and NØISE, a collaboration with artist Shepard Fairey. In this episode, John shares a few of his many anecdotes, experiences and insights as an experimental musician turned professional bagpiper. We also get a brief history of the instrument, the outfit and the journey that landed him in this vocation. Long time pals Joe and John get a chance to catch up, hear some fruits of their collaborations and they revisit the time Vincent Gallo visited John at his Portland home. Der Redestein liegt bei Nils... und er bringt das dritte Album von Steve von Till mit. Was wohl die anderen Herren zu "Grave is a Grim Horse" sagen....
Jeff and Ben riff briefly on great heavy riffs. But the real riffing is in the expansive dialogue that takes them from Slayer to the great jazz imprint ECM records and beyond. In the second half, they deep dive into the great Steve Von Till's most recent records No Wilderness Deep Enough and its ambient companion A Deep and Endless Wilderness. Both Jeff and Ben hold Steve's music in great esteem. Indeed, it is a true gift in their respective lives. Steve needs no introduction. Having co-fronted and played guitar in Neurosis since 1989, he is an actual heavy music Icon. We speak about the spiritual aspects of music, the union of matter and spirit, mining the source, and his stunning new book of poetry, Harvestman:23 Untitled Poems and its accompanying spoken word album.
What do a 4th grade teacher from Northern Idaho and one of the guitarists from Neurosis have in Common? They're both Steve Von Till. What does the Astronaut Scott Kelly have in Common with Neurosis' other guitarist have in common? Well... ok they're different people but they have the same name.
Steve Von Till of Neurosis is our guest this week! Steve tells us how the door first opened to him as a solo artist, the path of his solo records throughout his career, and wrestling with negative thoughts as he worked on his latest album, No Wilderness Deep Enough, and his first book of poetry in 2020. He also discusses his alter ego, Harvestman, how music has saved him many times throughout his life, the courage that punk rock gave him, and an update on new music from Neurosis. Petar, Sylvia, and Brandon discuss the Mudvayne reunion -- are they bigger than ever before because of their long hiatus? -- Weezer marketing their new record as metal, the '90s icons we feel can put out a great metal album, the NWOAHM band that we think can put out a great Weezer album, and Dee Snider calling out Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer. Episode 55 of The Nine Circles Audio Thing is all about the Album of the Month for September which is Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic by Germany's post metal/progressive metal juggernauts The Ocean which is available now on Metal Blade Records and Pelagic Records. Buke once again captains the episode joined by Vince, Ian, Angela, Hera (Cat), and Jon! The pick this month was a mere suggestion from Corey which grew legs to become an all in team pick. And, it's easy to see why, this is The Ocean's 10th full length and they've yet to do anything less than EPIC. Ian puts his college learning to good use in explaining the history and timeline while Hera dives deep into themes and tie ins to Phan 1. Vince loves the concept but...prog...so, he is mixed on everything except the one track that features a strong black metal backbone. Go figure. Jon, Angela and Buke enjoyed it for what it is, another stellar entry into a major catalog from a truly amazing band. One thing is for sure, this just might be the deepest dive into an album we've done since the beginning of these album of the month picks. Plus, car alarms from possible dinosaurs roaming the streets? All that and a "what else drove our boats" in September along with August since we missed that episode. But, pay close attention to the Steve Von Till section which was slated as the August pick from Josh but work and life didn't cooperate in time for it to flesh out. And, a heartwarming tribute to Power Trip's Riley Gale. At nearly 2-1/2 hours, this episode is chock full of stuff to keep you thinking of history, progressive metal and a whole host of albums to explore. So jump in and get an earful! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

In this episode of the Books of Some Substance podcast, Nick is joined by Steve Von Till of the seminal metal band Neurosis for a conversation about Ted Hughes’ Crow: From the Life and Songs of the Crow. Von Till’s prolific career now includes his latest solo record, No Wilderness Deep Enough, and his first published book of poems, Harvestman: 23 Untitled Poems and Collected Lyrics, both of which provide ample material for discussing his approach to songwriting, lyrics, poetry, and their endless overlaps. Naturally, references to the film The Crow are made and Nick predictably (and repeatedly) confesses that he likes things with a dark tone. Grab some Hughes, some Neurosis, Von Till’s new solo record and/or poetry collection, and settle in for a relaxing discussion of language, art, and the subtleties of everything in between.
8 years of discussions and in my wildest dreams I never thought I'd be able to have on Steve Von Till from Neurosis but, here we are. I am extremely proud to share this detailed and insightful discussion with one of the founding members of Neurosis on top of his extremely compelling solo material. We discuss his profession as a teacher, preservation and unintended influence. Thank you for your years of support, I couldn't do it without you. You can hear part one here. Alright, this is where shit gets real. Like really real. This is when our guest and the concept of our podcast collide to create a thing of singular beauty. There is a meeting of minds. There are moments where agreement is reached, and unsung music appreciated. On part 2 of our interview with Steve Von Till, he goes into detail about Neurosis, Neurot Recordings, some of the records he really digs and, as true to the ethos of the show, picks an album he thinks is unsung. That album is Life of Crime by Laughing Hyenas, and we get into the weeds about the bands, the sound, the scene around them and why they’re truly unsung. Which then puts us in the position that we always put ourselves in. The position in which we ask you, the listener, to vote on whether you think this album unsung. When you listen, you’ll know what we think. But the power in your hands. So use it wisely.
Steve von Till is on the show! We discuss his new album, his first book of poetry, that time Neurosis did Ozzfest, and more. We also squash a beef from a brief interaction he and I had eight years ago that left me terrified of him. Then I recommend old friends Venetian Veil back on the show for the recommendation. It sure took us a wee while to get around to doing another interview, eh? Well, we’re taking steps to resolve that and (hopefully) bring you more in future. The first of those steps is this two parter with the influential Steve Von Till. The truth is that we weren’t actively planning interviews - it was just one of those things where we would occasionally float the idea of doing one but would never follow it up. So when we got asked if we’d like to interview SVT, being fans of Neurosis, we thought we’d be daft to pass up the chance to do it. And the rest is history. Steve has a new solo album landing on August 7th called No Wilderness Deep Enough. We won’t say much about the album itself in this here blog (cause you totally need to listen to the podcast to get the lowdown) but suffice to say, it’s rather good, and also a bit of a different vibe for him. Alongside the new album he’s releasing his first collection of poetry called Harvestman: 23 Untitled Poems and Collected Lyrics. It’s very good. We also chat about it on this very episode. Steve fills us in in on the inspiration for the album and poetry book, and as is tradition with out interviews, we chat to Steve about some of his back catalogue. Part two will drop later this week. We’re stoked to share this with you. Enjoy!

ong-running post-Metal legends Neurosis have been busy this year. A tour of Europe with Godflesh and YOB, followed by a string dates in the USA with Bell Witch and Deafkids have been stoking the engine of activity, along with the recent reissue of the bands' acclaimed collaboration album Neurosis + Jarboe (Neurot Recordings). Joined by the indomitable chanteuse Jarboe, the grouping created something unique, experimental, and lasting. Ghost Cult caught up with legend Steve Von Till to discuss the pairing, the remasted reissue, the new artwork with Aaron Turner (Sumac, Old Man Gloom), the process of creating the special vinyl edition, how the band writes together, and when we can expect a potential new Neurosis album.
