In a dystopian 1997, a soldier-turned-bankrobber is taked rescuing the US President after he crashes into Manhattan, which has been turned into a giant maximum security prison. That's the official description for this gritty, sci-fi action thriller but a couple of key players involved made it more special than that. The solider is Snake Plissken played by Kurt Russell (The Thing, Tombstone, The Hateful Eight) in one of his more iconic performances. The director is genre master John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, They Live) who inadverdently created a sub-genre with the success of this film forty-five years ago. And the rest of this film's stellar supporting cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasance, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, and Adrienne Barbeau. Today Matt & Todd saddle up with (not Wolverine) Logan for a retrospective on one of cinema's most iconic, sharp‑eyed but little-discussed legends: Lee Van Cleef.Few actors have ever done more with a squint, a silhouette, or the simple act of entering a room. Lee Van Cleef embodied a whole cinematic archetype. From Westerns to war films to Italian genre oddities to 80s action pulp, his career is a treasure full of gems any actor would be proud of.This episode explores the major stops along that trail, to name a few that we mention:High Noon (1952)Van Cleef's film debut, silent but unforgettable. Even without dialogue, he stands out—those cheekbones and that stare do half the acting for him. A small role, but the beginning of legend. For a Few Dollars More (1965)The real turning point. As Colonel Douglas Mortimer, Van Cleef becomes a full‑fledged Leone gunslinger. He was cool, lethal, and unexpectedly soulful. He matches Eastwood beat for beat, proving he wasn't just a villain, but a presence. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)Angel Eyes. One of the greatest villains in film history. Van Cleef's performance is all precision: calm, polite, and terrifying. The Big Gundown (1966)A masterpiece of the Spaghetti Western era. Van Cleef's Jonathan Corbett is a bounty hunter with a conscience, and the film gives him room to be complex, conflicted, and commanding. This is peak Van Cleef—charismatic, dangerous, and magnetic. The Big Showdown (1967)A looser, more playful follow‑up to Gundown, showing Van Cleef's ability to shift gears without losing his edge. He's still the coolest man in the room, but now with a wink.Barquero (1970) A criminally underrated American Western and one of Van Cleef's best roles. As Travis, the ferry‑man who becomes the last line of defense against a gang of killers, Van Cleef is gruff, stubborn, and absolutely riveting. This is the movie that proves he wasn't just a European Western icon—he could carry a gritty American frontier story with equal force. If you watch only one deep‑cut Van Cleef film, make it Barquero which features a tremendous cast with stellar performances including the always great Warren Oates and Forrest Tucker.Escape from New York (1981)Snake Plissken may be the star, but Van Cleef's Hauk is the heavy with a steel core. Older, grayer, but still radiating authority. Code Name: Wild Geese (1984)Pure 80s Euro‑action pulp. Van Cleef brings gravitas to a movie that desperately needs it, elevating the mercenary‑mayhem with that trademark “I've seen everything and survived it” energy. One of the most action-packed endings you'll see with a lifetime of pyrotechnics in one scene. The Master (1984, TV Series)Van Cleef as a ninja master. On television. In the 80s.Is it absurd? Yes.Is it terrible? Actually, no. Its really just fine 80s cheese. He brings sincerity to a role that could've been pure camp, and the result is a cult oddity that's impossible not to enjoy.Plus:Ride Lonesome, Sabata, The Magnificent Seven Ride, The OctagonLee Van Cleef never phoned it in, even in the wildest genre films. He could be heroic, villainous, or something intriguingly in‑between. He had a face that told stories before he spoke a word.He elevated everything he touched—from masterpieces to B‑movies to TV curiosities. If you know, you know. Peter and Eden watch 1981's Escape from New York and land, predictably, on opposite sides: Eden had a blast, Peter was fighting sleep and checking the runtime. Before getting there, they spend a significant chunk of the episode on a surprise Neurosis album drop — An Undying Love for a Burning World — that apparently derailed any other listening either of them did for a week and a half. They also work through a stack of new metal releases, Eden's ongoing Continuity Comics deep dive (cliffhangers with no resolution, going all the way down), and the inevitable sidebar about Ready Player One being one of the worst things ever committed to paper.SHOW NOTESContinuity Comics / Death Watch 2000 — Eden is deep into the indie comics boom-and-bust era. Death Watch 2000 (20 issues, zero through nineteen) ends on a cliffhanger because issue 20 never came out. The follow-up crossover, Rise of Magic, also ends on a cliffhanger — because the company went under. Eden is reading Ms. Mystic through all of this.Dungeon Crawler Carl — Peter is on book five (nearly six) of the LitRPG series. Eden remains skeptical on principle, largely due to the covers, a detailed bit about the Mantar illustration, and a Chuck Tingle tangent.Project Hail Mary (film) — Peter saw it in St. George during spring break and liked it. Eden knows the twist, is annoyed it was in the trailer, and delivers the hot take that the film is secretly about "exospecies gay love" — which, they argue, makes Andy Weir's claims to apolitical writing somewhat complicated.New metal releases rundown — Peter ran down a week where six metal albums dropped at once: Exodus's Goliath (disappointing
Let's sneak into Escape from New York, John Carpenter's cult classic that blends dystopian sci-fi with gritty action. Set in a future where Manhattan has become a maximum-security prison, the film delivers an unforgettable premise, a killer atmosphere, and one of cinema's coolest anti-heroes in Snake Plissken. That said… this one didn't quite hit the same highs as Carpenter's other work from the era. While the concept is undeniably strong and there's a certain cheesy charm that makes it fun to watch, the execution feels uneven. The performances often come across as flat, with characters that never fully come to life. The villain lacks real presence, and the President—despite being central to the plot—feels surprisingly underwhelming. There's still plenty to appreciate here, especially if you enjoy Carpenter's style and low-budget creativity. But compared to his other films from this time, Escape from New York feels more like a rough draft of something greater than a fully realized classic. A fun ride, but one that leaves you wishing for a bit more depth and impact.Stick around until the end of the conversation for a round of Snake Trivia!Safe travels, nomads.

In this episode of the show we are putting a bow on the February jaunt through 80s sci-fi dystopias with a John Carpenter double-header of Escape from New York and They Live. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Carpenter's love of westerns distilling into Escape, how Kurt Russell loved the character of Snake Plissken and based his performance on Clint Eastwood and how the movie has a scrappy feel of a prescient dystopia that took effort to create. We also talk about They Live and how its messaging has been thoroughly vindicated since its release, Roddy Piper as a stand-in for Kurt Russell, retro-futuristic production design of the world seen through the iconic sunglasses and much more!Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Campbell BurrowsHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon! Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's January, so that means it's time for our “Uncannuary” series! Where we cover movies that feature superheroes or vigilantes, either adapted from comics or created specifically for the big screen! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Matt Naughton discuss Pamela Anderson's somewhat infamous adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics anti-hero, Barb Wire!Heroic partial nudity! Conveniently-placed bubbles! Near-lethal stilettos! Great hero shots and abundant aura farming! Awkward and inconsistent narration! Disturbing cybernetic bikini torture! A blowgun disguised as a cigarette! A motorcycle with missiles! A club full of goths and gangsters! Several discussions about contact lenses! Shocking mockery of the obese and the blind community! Possibly the strangest Casablanca remake you've ever seen! Surprisingly decent stunts and chase scenes, including a climactic aerial battle! An interesting cast that includes Udo Kier in a silly wig, Lifeforce's Steve Railsback, Temuera Morrison, Xander Berkeley, Jack Noseworthy, Clint Howard, Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., Victoria Rowell from Dumb & Dumber, and a committed Pamela Anderson as a slightly hotter Snake Plissken/Tom Cody-style hero doing spin kicks and shooting guns in black leather and high heels! A pulpy example of pure 90s sleaze that was merely a better script away from being a camp classic! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Tron: Ares, Matt Damon & Ben Affleck's new crime thriller The Rip, the new Knives Out sequel Wake Up Dead Man, the dog-centric horror movie Good Boy, and some of his favorite recent action/martial arts movies: Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, Ghost Killer, Bad City, and Baby Assassins 3!You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Along the way, there were also multiple other stories about Snake's many adventures in both comic books, a novelization of the original film and a knock-off psuedo-sequel.

This week we take a look at Bryan's favorite movie of all time, John Carpenter's tough guy action dystopia that definitely shook the Disney off of Kurt Russell and reintroduced him as a premier action movie star for the 1980's. We track the entire trajectory of this movie's production, we'll tell you why everyone thinks Snake Plissken is dead, you'll find out about all the other guys that the production company wanted over Kurt Russell, how director of photography, Dean Cundey engineered an entirely new anamorphic lens just to see the movie at night without sacrificing all the awesome lighting. It's a once-in-a-lifetime action movie that set the pace for the decade and inspired everyone to try their hand (and mostly fail) at making their own version of the movie.Carpenter had access to more money than he'd work with before and still had to stretch a dollar to make the movie and he managed to knock it out of the park on every front. The cast is stacked. The production design is second-to-none, and the soundtrack is just perfect. The theme for this show is unlike any other in our lineup. Hosted by Cinema Degeneration CEO Cameron Scott and his co-host, author, voiceover artist, and host of 'The Diabolical Index' Korey Dawson. The theme is simple: Scott calls Dawson out of the blue with no warning as to what the topic of conversation will be...without warning if you will. Scott will continuously test the overall skill and level of pop culture and movie expertise of Mr. Dawson with totally random topics including movies, literature, pop culture, music, art, comics and more. Dawson has absolutely no prior knowledge to these show topics and is going into the discussions totally blind. These shows are a hoot to record, and we hope as much fun for the audience to listen back to. The 8th episode show topic is on the most broadest of subjects on the show to date with "FAMOUS MOVIE WEAPONS." You are all in for a deep dive discussion on the expansive material that is the most unique and memorable weapons in movie history. Topics range from lengthy debates on Freddy's Glove, Chucky's Knife, the Predator's overall technology, Candyman's Hook, Jason's Machete, Toulon's Puppets, Reggie's four barrelled shotgun, Ash's Chainsaw hand, Jigsaw's traps and plus many many more. Included in the festivities are various rants and segways into side topics and the idea of Pumpkinhead, Snake Plissken, Killer Klowns From Outerspace, Freddy Vs Candyman, what makes a weapon a weapon and not just a conduit of its user and much more. Join us!

This is a preview of a bonus episode! find the whole thing here, on our patreon! ----- John Carpenter's Escape from New York is a classic. But John Carpenter's Escape from L.A. is almost the exact same story remade with all the sliders turned to 11. Snake Plissken is deployed into a post-Big One L.A., an area designated by the new christofascist US Government as the dumping ground for all criminals, to retrieve a superweapon stolen by the President's daughter- who was radicalised psychically by an L.A. Revolutionary leader. Joining us to tackle this is L.A. resident and actor, Morgana Ignis! Star of Helluva Boss, Class Acts, and of course Dracula's Ex-Girlfriend! ----- Donation links for the LA Wildfires Climate change will be experienced as a series of disasters filmed on mobile phones that get progressively closer until it's your phone doing the filming. New month, new theme! All April long will be One Night Only - a celebration of films that (mostly) take place in just one night. First up is our latest look at a John Carpenter classic - Escape from New York! Ben and Anthony discuss the debut of Kurt Russell's most iconic character, Snake Plissken, the bizarre-yet-cool tone created by Carpenter (and cinematographer Dean Cundey), and the free production value of shooting this movie in St. Louis... which just kind of looked like that at the time. Co-written, co-scored and directed by John Carpenter, and starring Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau, and Harry Dean Stanton.
In our first episode back from our sabbatical in The Void, Andrew and Lindsey discuss Stargate. A movie that Lindsey really loves and Andrew had a hard time remembering exactly why he remembers specific details of until a light bulb moment presented itself.
Russel-Mania 2: Oops no Carpenters ends with Captain Ron, a weird boating movie new to both of us! Would this be better with Kurt as the Family Man role? Why isn't this just Summer Rental? Did Kurt forget he wasn't playing Snake Plissken? (Does Plissken have two consecutive Ss because his first name is snake?) All this and more! Looking for episode 267?
