Deep in Wisconsin's Northwoods, the ruins of Summerwind Mansion sit quietly by West Bay Lake, but the chilling tales of ghosts, hidden secrets, and unexplained events keep its haunted legacy alive.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version. https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateInfo on the next LIVE SCREAM event. https://weirddarkness.com/LiveScreamInfo on the next WEIRDO WATCH PARTY event. https://weirddarkness.com/TVIN THIS EPISODE: Was Summerwind in Wisconsin really haunted? No one knows and if they do, they aren't saying. Today, only the foundations, the stone chimneys and perhaps the ghosts remain. (Summerwind: The Most Haunted House In Wisconsin) *** A young woman discovers that it's possible to live a lonely life, yet still not be alone. (Followed By a Child) *** Is it possible that during the years of World War 1, Agnes Whiteland, while peering off her balcony, saw a group of time travelers? (Agnes And The Time Travelers) *** Tituba proved to be a fantastic orator as she talked her way out of slavery using the fear and mass hysteria of witchcraft that paralyzed the people of Salem. (Tituba And the Salem Witch Trials) *** The discovery of a 10-year-old's body at an ancient Roman site in Italy suggests his family, friends, and neighbors thought he was a vampire – and took measures to make sure he wouldn't return from the grave. (The Unearthing of a Child Vampire) *** Authorities placed Gil Perez in jail as a deserter and for the possibility that he may have been in the service of Satan. In Gil's defense though, he said he simply teleported somewhere else. (Teleportation of a Spanish Soldier) ***
Matthew Weeks was found guilty and hanged for the murder of Charlotte Dymond. Today it is said that the ghosts of both of them roam the countryside – but could it be that Matthew's ghost is lamenting because he was innocent of the crime? (The Murder of Charlotte Dymond on Bodmin Moor) *** A building situated right in the middle of London's swankiest and most historical areas, has long been said to be the lair of something not of this earth. (The Bizarre Nameless Thing of Berkley Square) *** “The Jungle Book” - we are all familiar with the story in some way – either from the classic animated Disney film version from 1967, the live action version in 2016, or the original novel by Rudyard Kipling published in 1894. In fact, yet another retelling of the story is coming in 2019 in a film entitled simply, “Mowgli”. But what many don't know is that the character of Mowgli was, in fact, inspired by a real boy who was raised by wild animals. (The Real Life Inspiration for Mowgli) *** Evil stepmothers, jealous of their stepdaughters' beauty are a classic tome in fantastical stories – but Martha Savcoll was no fairy tale. (Brooklyn Murderess) *** Of all the places in the world you would expect to be safe from the paranormal, it would be a church – but that would not be telling the truth when referring to Adams Grove Presbyterian Church in Alabama. (Haunted Adams Grove Presbyterian Church) *** Outside of Washington, D.C. lies Forest Haven Asylum, an abandoned institution with a thoroughly disturbing past. Get ready for a bone-chilling dive into Wisconsin's haunted history as Host Lyle Perez explores ten of the state's most ghost-ridden locations. With Halloween just around the corner, it's the perfect time to delve into Wisconsin's eerie past, from luxury hotels and mysterious mansions to desolate cemeteries and asylums. Wisconsin may be known for its natural beauty and charming towns, but hidden within its landscapes are tales of spirits and lingering souls. So, sit back, turn off the lights, and join us as we journey into the haunted heart of the Badger State. Featured Locations: The Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee 424 E Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202 Known for its luxury and Victorian charm, the Pfister Hotel is haunted by its original owner, Charles Pfister. Guests report lights flickering, electronics turning on and off, and shadowy figures roaming the ninth floor. Major League Baseball players who stay here have encountered unexplained furniture rearrangements and disembodied footsteps. It seems Charles Pfister is as watchful over his hotel in the afterlife as he was in life. Summerwind Mansion, Land O' Lakes West Bay Lake, Land O' Lakes, WI 54540 Once an opulent estate, Summerwind Mansion is a haunting ruin where spirits are said to linger despite a fire that destroyed the building in 1988. Former residents reported ghostly figures, whispers, and even a skeleton discovered in the basement. A spectral woman is still seen in the upper windows, adding to the eerie atmosphere of this infamous haunted landmark. Old Baraboo Inn, Baraboo 135 Walnut St, Baraboo, WI 53913 Built in the 1860s, this historic tavern is home to “Charlie,” a ghostly bartender, and other spirits who make their presence known with phantom music, laughter, and ghostly touches. The second floor, once a brothel, is especially active with flickering lights and whispers in the night. Visitors can still stop by the inn for a drink—and possibly a ghostly encounter. Dartford Cemetery, Green Lake Park Dr, Green Lake, WI 54941 Known as one of Wisconsin's most haunted cemeteries, Dartford Cemetery is famous for apparitions, whispers, and chilling encounters near Chief Highknocker's grave. Visitors report seeing a spectral little boy playing among the tombstones and cold, ghostly hands gripping their shoulders, making this spot a must-visit for thrill-seekers. Sheboygan County Insane Asylum, Sheboygan 3400 County Rd EE, Sheboygan, WI 53083 The abandoned Sheboygan County Insane Asylum, closed in the 1970s, is a hub of paranormal activity. Ghost hunters report hearing screams, whispers, and spotting shadowy figures lurking in the windows. Though trespassing is prohibited, the asylum's sinister reputation lingers, attracting those brave enough to sneak a peek. Bloody Bride Bridge, Stevens Point Highway 66, Stevens Point, WI 54481 Legend has it that a bride who died tragically on this bridge still haunts it, appearing to drivers as a figure in a blood-stained wedding dress. Some drivers see her in their rearview mirror, sitting in the backseat. The bridge is notorious for paranormal sightings, making it a chilling drive for those daring enough to cross. Brumder Mansion, Milwaukee 3046 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53208 Built in 1910, Brumder Mansion is now a bed and breakfast filled with ghostly tales. Guests report the laughter of unseen children, phantom footsteps, and the figure of George Brumder himself wandering the halls. Stay overnight for a unique experience and perhaps leave with a ghost story of your own. Maribel Caves Hotel, Maribel County Rd R, Maribel, WI 54227 Locally called “Hotel Hell,” Maribel Caves Hotel has burned down multiple times and is rumored to contain a portal to the underworld. Ghostly figures, strange mists, and a faint smell of smoke greet visitors to the ruins, making it a notorious site for paranormal investigators. The Grand Opera House, Oshkosh 100 High Ave, Oshkosh, WI 54901 The Grand Opera House in Oshkosh, dating back to 1883, has seen numerous ghostly sightings, including a former stage manager who watches over performances. Staff and guests report phantom applause, Victorian apparitions, and cold drafts in the auditorium. It's a historic theater with a haunted twist, perfect for fans of the paranormal and the arts. Old Carver School, Carver Historic Schoolhouse, Carver, WI Abandoned for decades, the Old Carver School is said to be haunted by a former teacher. Visitors hear children's laughter, footsteps in empty halls, and the unnerving sense of being watched. This haunted schoolhouse is a reminder that some teachers stay dedicated long after the final bell has rung. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4   Campfire Conversation: Eric and Ana welcome “Brick” into The Cabin to talk terrifying haunts for Halloween across Wisconsin. These are places rumored - and as far as some people are concerned, verified - to be haunted with some crazy and unexplained things that happen. Places like the Bloody Bride Bridge in Stevens Point - can you guess the stories behind that one? The legendary Summerwind Mansion - or what's left of it - deep in the North Woods has had numerous reports of hauntings and more ever since its construction, the mysterious fire, and the aftermath ever since. Cemeteries are always rife with haunting rumors, and the Dartford Cemetery in Green Lake has a special reputation that Brick discusses. Similar for Sanitarium Hill in Madison, with plenty of history that just might freak you out. Milwaukee's Ambassador Hotel has long been rumored to be haunted, as is Shaker's Cigar Bar in Walker's Point, which gives ghost tours. Manitowoc, home of Windigo Fest, has a major World War II-era submarine called the USS Cobia in the water and plenty of hauntings have been reported on the sub, where people can still spend the night. In Marinette County, McClintock County Park near Silver Cliff gives you an outdoor area to explore and make yourself vulnerable, while on the Door Peninsula the Institute Saloon lets you raise a glass of beer with the ghosts that hang out there. And the legend of the Mabel Tainter Theater in Menomonie is just not for elegant beauty in its architecture and staging wonderful shows; it, like many theaters, has some spooky stuff happening when the curtain is down. We discuss all of these and more in Haunted Wisconsin on the episode of The Cabin. Inside Sponsors:Best Western Hotels: https://bit.ly/3zCCK3fMarshfield Clinic: https://bit.ly/3Wj6pYj

In episode 25, Scott and Mickey discuss the events of the tumultuous summer of 1987, when violent crime was rampant, and numerous women were abducted and later found dead throughout the state. We focus our attention on the murders of 3 women from the south-central region - Angela Hackl, Barbara Blackstone, and Linda Nachreiner. When the bodies of these 3 women were found naked and dumped in wooded areas, within weeks of each other, the similar nature of the crimes led many to believe a serial killer was terrorizing the Wisconsin Dells area, abducting young, attractive women and dotting our state with their lifeless bodies.  The crime wave that plagued the state in the summer of 1987 is remembered today as one of the deadliest on record, creating fear and panic in areas that are usually reserved for family fun and waterparks. Hear about what happened that year, and the controversial aftermath of some of the cases - at least those cases that have been "closed. " In the beginning banter, Scott and Mickey discuss more about an impending visit to Summerwind Mansion, and Wisconsin again makes a strong showing in another list - this one involving obscure documentaries about paranormal happenings. No one knows and if they do, they aren't saying. Today, only the foundations, the stone chimneys and perhaps the ghosts remain. In Gil's defense though, he said he simply teleported somewhere else. (Teleportation of a Spanish Soldier) ***
Matthew Weeks was found guilty and hanged for the murder of Charlotte Dymond. Known since the 1970's as the "most haunted house in Wisconsin," Summerwind Mansion's ghostly legends have dominated the Badger State's folklore for decades. Built in 1914 as West Bay Lake Fishing Lodge, it was converted into a summer home by Robert Patterson Lamont and his family in 1916. Lamont was a wealthy businessman and steel industry tycoon who later became Secretary of Commerce under President Hoover in 1929.  Their time at the mansion was fairly quiet, according to the lack of written records and verbal accounts of the time, until the 1930's, when legend says Lamont was so startled by a full-bodied apparition in his kitchen that he attempted to shoot at it, leaving bullet holes in a door still reportedly visible decades later. This frightened the family so badly that they left the home suddenly after that event and never returned. In the decades that followed, the home had several mysterious changing of hands and was vacant for many years until 1969 when it became the home of Arnold and Ginger Hinshaw and their 4 children. What followed was the family being tormented by disembodied voices, paranoia, items seemingly moving on their own, a reported partially mummified human skeleton found hidden in the walls, and a descent into madness which led to the family leaving the home, and ultimately, an end of the marriage itself.  After being abandoned again for many years, the home burned to the ground under mysterious circumstances during a storm in 1988, leaving a stone foundation and 2 large chimneys as the only remnants of a once grand home. In recent years, more rumor and innuendo have painted a possible much darker history to the home than previously thought...   Summerwind as it appeared, abandoned, in the 1980s. The haunted Summerwind Mansion has a story spanning more than a century. Its story runs deep through many families, rumors of insanity, demonic activity, and ghosts. The haunted Summerwind Mansion is infamous no so much for who lived there, but for why many couldn't live there. Many have been drawn to the property for unexplained reasons or forces. To date, almost all of its residents who attempted to occupy the fabled structured, have found themselves also compelled or forced to leave with just as much drive. Become a patron at http://www.WeirdDarkness.com/WEIRDO.IN THIS EPISODE: (Dark Archives episode with stories from October 16-17, 2018) *** Was Summerwind in Wisconsin really haunted? No one knows and if they do, they aren’t saying. Today, only the foundations, the stone chimneys and perhaps the ghosts remain. (Summerwind: The Most Haunted House In Wisconsin) *** A young woman discovers that it’s possible to live a lonely life, yet still not be alone. (Tituba And the Salem Witch Trials) *** The discovery of a 10-year-old's body at an ancient Roman site in Italy suggests his family, friends, and neighbors thought he was a vampire – and took measures to make sure he wouldn’t return from the grave. (The Unearthing of a Child Vampire) *** Authorities placed Gil Perez in jail as a deserter and for the possibility that he may have been in the service of Satan. In Gil’s defense though, he said he simply teleported somewhere else. (Teleportation of a Spanish Soldier) ***
Matthew Weeks was found guilty and hanged for the murder of Charlotte Dymond. Today it is said that the ghosts of both of them roam the countryside – but could it be that Matthew’s ghost is lamenting because he was innocent of the crime? (The Murder of Charlotte Dymond on Bodmin Moor) *** A building situated right in the middle of London’s swankiest and most historical areas, has long been said to be the lair of something not of this earth. But what many don’t know is that the character of Mowgli was, in fact, inspired by a real boy who was raised by wild animals. (The Real Life Inspiration for Mowgli) *** Evil stepmothers, jealous of their stepdaughters’ beauty are a classic tome in fantastical stories – but Martha Savcoll was no fairy tale. (The Anguish of Forest Haven Asylum)

Summerwind Mansion, considered Wisconsin's most haunted house, is located on the shores of West Bay Lake. When it was purchased by the Lamont's in 1916, the maids informed them that it was haunted, and even though they experienced weird and unexplained things throughout the years, it wasn't until the mid-1930's that the family's feelings changed. That day, they were at the dinner table when the basement door flew open and the apparition of a man appeared. Lamont fired his pistol twice at the spirit, but the bullets traveled through the specter and lodged into the wall. The family promptly fled the home.Throughout the years, multiple families owned the home, and they each experienced paranormal activity. Strange sounds and voices could be heard, tools would go missing, windows would open and close on their own, and on several occasions apparitions would be witnessed. On June 19, 1988, the mansion was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. All that remains, is the stone chimney and the foundation, but people still believe that something still haunts the area. Who or what haunts this home? Craig Nehring is from Minocqua, WI and lived in that area for 30 years. He lived very close to Summerwind Mansion and that is how he got his start into ghost-hunting. In addition he would see shadows and hear voices and things he couldn’t explain. In 2005 Nehring moved to the Fox Valley area. Around that time the ghost-hunting shows on television, started to pop up all over the place. Nehring decided to build his own team of investigators. His team’s first investigation was at an old hospital. In 2010 the Fox Valley Ghost Hunters were in the local news paper, The Post Crescent followed them around in the building and wrote a story on the team. This was only the beginning.
