Mining Minds

Recorded on-site at the 2025 Women in Mining National Conference in San Antonio, this episode brings authentic, unfiltered stories from two rising voices in the mining world—Margaret Hinton and Paige Courtney. With backgrounds as diverse as cotton farming and competitive athletics to engineering and financial investigations, Margaret and Paige dive into how they found purpose and passion in the mining industry. Together, they share how mining became more than a career—it's a community. From their first experiences in tunnels and copper pits to working on a new Women in Mining chapter in the Midwest, they highlight the importance of visibility, storytelling, and educating the next generation. Whether it's correcting outdated perceptions about the industry or advocating for reclamation and sustainability, their mission is clear: mining has a human face, and it's changing fast. This episode is packed with humor, heart, and hard truths—plus, a few ghost stories, underground adventures, and a growing obsession with mining history (and a certain Leadville legend, Baby Doe Tabor). And if you're wondering what these women are up to after-hours? Head north to Area 31, a unique UTV park in Minocqua, Wisconsin, where the off-road spirit runs just as deep as their passion for mining. Destination On The Left

Destination On The Left

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2025 36:18

This episode of Destination on the Left is the last in the series of three episodes where we dig into tourism in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and the unique strengths and challenges of each of the three DMOs. This week, Krystal Westfahl, President and CEO of Let's Minocqua Visitors Bureau, shares the decade-long journey of her Chamber of Commerce as it became a visitor's bureau and then rebranded to align better with the area she represents. We're discussing the importance of having a clear vision of who you are and who you serve and how to evolve your brand to set your destination up for growth. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Krystal's background in natural resources and nonprofit management aligns with her current role in tourism marketing The importance of having a clear vision and defined roles to eliminate confusion and increase effectiveness How Krystal's region works collaboratively with other DMOs to promote tourism across the region What strategies Krystal and her team used to refresh their brand and the importance of leveraging the recognized name ‘Minocqua' for marketing Why effective communication and community input are vital in successfully launching and managing a DMO Rebranding a Shared Vision Krystal and I discuss her decade-long journey transforming a chamber of commerce into a vibrant visitor bureau. A key part of this transformation was rebranding. The move to a visitor bureau needed a carefully planned branding strategy that matched the destination's mission to invite more visitors to the area. The bureau leaned heavily on the distinctive term Minocqua, not just for its uniqueness but for its longstanding recognition among newcomers and long-time visitors as evoking the Northwoods experience. Rebranding isn't just about altering logos or names but understanding and sharing your core values and visions. The Minocqua rebrand involved carefully planting a flag on shared community values. Collaborative Growth in the Northwoods of Wisconsin Operating in Oneida County, the Let's Minocqua Visitors Bureau is a huge collaborative success that has brought together multiple municipalities under a shared purpose. This cooperative model supports their mission, the economic uplift of Minocqua, Arborvita, Hazelhurst, and Woodruff, through joint marketing and seamless visitor engagement. The rebranding effort went beyond aesthetics, incorporating strategic input and widespread survey data to ensure the new identity resonated with everyone, from local businesses to tourists. Krystal describes this collaboration as a rising tide lifting all boats. Lessons in Branding Strategy From her experience, Krystal offers invaluable insights into the rebranding process for other DMOs considering a similar path: Take Your Time: Effective rebranding is not rushed. Krystal advises allowing one to two years for research, surveys, and stakeholder engagement to guide the rebranding journey. Understand Your Audience: Build a deeper understanding of community perceptions and visitor expectations. A brand should authentically reflect the values of the place it represents. Beyond the Logo: A brand encompasses more than visual identity. It is an organization's mission, vision, and strategic action, all working cohesively. Communication is Key: Open communication with local communities, businesses, and visitors ensures clarity and strengthens the shared vision. Kevin Bolger is an Olympic cross country skier for the United States. Kevin grew up skiing in Minocqua, WI where his family is originally from. However for the last decade he has spent the majority of his time living and competing in Norway and the rest of Scandinavia where the sport really thrives. Kevin started skiing in 3rd grade, but didn't start taking it seriously until he was in high school. After graduating he moved to Utah to train full time before making the US national team. Kevin's skills grew more and more until he earned his spot on the United States Olympic team and competed in the Beijing winter Olympics in 2022 where he placed in the world overall. Kevin's career hasn't been as glorious as some might assume however. Cross country skiing certainly has it's place in the midwest culture, but the sport is still very niche in the United States. That translates to not only a more difficult road to become internationally competitive, but it also makes it much harder for a professional skier like himself to make a sustainable living. In this episode we discuss growing up in the midwest, moving to Norway to ski with his heroes, fundraising to make his career possible, vlogging with his gold medalist girlfriend Maja Dahlqvist, competing in the Olympics during the pandemic, and much more.

The longest standing show ski team ever is the Min-Aqua Bats from Minocqua, Wisconsin. Our conversation today is with Duke Hillinger, a member of the club for decades, and covers the history and legacy of the Min-Aqua Bats. The club started in 1945 after the end of World War II when a group of skiers decided to celebrate by skiing on the first day of peace. The Min-Aqua Bats became the first amateur water ski show in the world and the second show after Cypress Gardens. The conversation also touches on notable skiers such as Lynn Novakofski and Tom and Janie Dorwin, community support, and the unique acts performed in the ski shows. Over the years, famous guests such as President Eisenhower and Elizabeth Taylor frequented the show. The club has produced many talented skiers over the years who have gone on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels. While the club has evolved over the years, with a younger membership and a focus on show skiing rather than three-event skiing, the sense of camaraderie and dedication to putting on a great show remains strong. Ana focuses on giving more in 2024 and explores a variety of interesting charitable events and organizations. She goes to Lake Geneva to explore things like the Mr. Lake Geneva Pageant, where men compete pageant-style to benefit area nonprofits as well as charity events centered around golf, biking, and more. She explores Cycling Without Age, an organization that provides rides to elderly people in need - it started in Denmark and now has chapters in 39 countries, including the US and Wisconsin. DoorTran, a transportation service in Door County, does similar work in Wisconsin's most famous peninsula. Conservation alliances in Wisconsin advance the quality of life in communities as well as the environment, and Ana shares the one in Sauk Prairie, which is also active in revamping the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant grounds. Serving as a mentor is another wonderful way to “pay it forward,” and programs like the Outagamie County Mentoring Program illustrate these benefits. She also discusses a variety of walks and runs, galas, interesting contests, festivals and more that benefit communities across the state. VolunteerMatch.org provides a good resource for finding some of them.Eric dives into some unique Wisconsin workouts and ways to get in better shape for 2024(hey, he tries every year) and some of those workouts include yoga with goats or alpacas - oddly soothing for some reason; curling and ice skating in winter; pole fitness; bungee workouts at places like Swoop; TRX and cycle workouts at places like CycleBar, Spire, and Barre Code; and unique spots like Bounce Trampoline at Hometown Pilates in Fitchburg, which combines dance, music and bounce for a full cardio workout, and also helps with balance and coordination and studies have shown bounce is good for lymph circulation. More fun than your usual regular run or some sit-ups!Jake discusses food as part of his resolution, and covers examples of places around the state where you can eat healthier. Places around the state are now offering fresher and healthier grab-and-go meals and you can find them at markets like The Farmacy in Green Bay, co-ops like Willy Street in Madison, People's Co-Op in La Crosse, and Outpost Natural Foods, which has multiple locations around Milwaukee, and more. Farmers markets have greatly multiplied in number across the state where you can get fresh-grown food from area farms, bakers, and more; they're often a great way to kick off your weekend. Many of these markets take place in the warmer months, but more and more communities have winter markets indoors. Jake also drops some favorites across the state, including Downtown Grocery in Wausau; Thai Basil in Madison; Subhouse in Hudson, and Island Cafe in Minocqua, where you'll find a Mediterranean menu amidst an area primarily known for pub food and fish fries in the great North Woods. He provides a nice blueprint for places that offer that combination of tasty cuisine and better nutrition many of us want.Hope your New Year's resolutions work well and you have a happy, healthy 2024!   Inside Sponsors:Jefferson County: https://bit.ly/3gt0Nau

The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Jackson County: https://bit.ly/3zxUStdThe Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCXCampfire Conversation: With the meat of snowmobiling season still just ahead of us, Eric, Ana, and Jake welcome Dylan Rose and Jack Sarama into The Cabin. These Wisconsin natives host the snowmobiling show Boondock Nation, where they tour all over the U.S. and Canada and sled coast-to-coast to showcase trails and destinations. In this episode, they focus on Wisconsin's snowmobiling trails and destinations. Discussions include the extensive network of trails (over 25,000 miles of trails criss-cross Wisconsin), the intense work involved in grooming and maintaining thousands of those trail miles, plus some great stops along the way. Some particular destinations receive focus, including the Eagle River and Land O Lakes areas and over to St. Germain and Sayner, where the modern style snowmobile was invented. The trails in many North Woods areas and the adjoining U.P. of Michigan often use former railroad rights-of-way and expansive lakes that allow you to really “open up” on the trails. Additional trail systems exist throughout the state, including Langlade County which bills itself as the “county of trails.” Additional systems in southern Wisconsin, where the seasons are shorter for snowmobiling, also offer trails closer to the larger cities. When you wish to ride off-trail but still want to have guidance and avoid private property, apps like OnX Offroad help you do just that. Yes, some key apps and equipment for better snowmobiling gets covered in this episode, too. Some events centered around snowmobiling happen across the state too, including radar runs and group rides; we dive into some of those, too, including the one at Bent's Camp near Land O Lakes, which Jack and Dylan frequent when they're not filming out west. This episode will definitely prep you for snowmobiling season, and as Jack said, remember: in the end, we're all squeezing the same throttle.Connect to Boondock Nation: https://boondocknation.com/Discover more about the onX Offroad app: https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad/appConnect to the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs: https://awsc.org/Get maps of snowmobile trails across Wisconsin: https://www.sco.wisc.edu/maps/snowmobile-trail/Inside Sponsors:Washington County -  https://bit.ly/3qayJALShop Discover Wisconsin - https://shop.discoverwisconsin.com

It's been quite the couple of years for Wausau East football. The Lumberjacks played just two games in 2020. In 2021, they were unable to field a varsity roster. The last two years they've been bouncing as a JV team and in 8-player.  Finally, on August 11, they returned to varsity 11-man action, topping Lakeland 23-7 in Minocqua. It was their first win in 1,440 days.  Now, the team prepares for their first installment of Wausau's greatest rivalry since that two-game 2020 season; the Log Game. The game with history all the way back to the early 1970's will be renewed when East faces Wausau West on Friday night. It's not just the first meeting in a long time, it'll also be their last.  NewsChannel 7's Ben Helwig visited with Wausau East head coach Tyler Kramer as well as quarterback Pacey Weber and wide receiver Caden Werth on the emotional start to the season and why Friday's Log Game against Wausau West may just be the biggest of their lives.

We welcome new regular panelist Priscilla Bort, Citizen Action's Movement Politics Director. Priscilla shares more about herself with our listeners. The panel dives into the state budget battle brewing that will consume the Capital for the next few months. Robert reports back on the final Joint Finance Committee (JFC) public hearing held in Minocqua where Republicans again pretended to listen to the public. Now the real action begins as JFC takes votes on the budget. Priscilla tells us about Governor Evers' plan in the budget to ensure all Wisconsin students eat for free while in our schools. We highlight Rep. Kristina Shelton's relentless support for the proposal and her leadership in the Assembly and beyond. We call out the latest GOP bills targeting social safety net programs that passed the Assembly early this week. Robert highlights AB 148 which would impose costly and antiquated barriers on access to health care. The panel discusses the dangerous debt limit fiasco and Rep. Van Orden's decision to back Speaker McCarthy's scheme to make Trump tax cuts for the rich permanent, make draconian cuts to critical programs, and reverse climate change and health care affordability advances. Priscilla updates us on the Republican effort to legally harass former Racine alderman John Tate II, in wake of the quick dismissal of the bogus partisan charges. We expose the Milwaukee Police Association's effort to fight legally over the new City of Milwaukee video release policy which improves transparency for victims' families and the public to which the police are supposed to be accountable.

In early 1982, the biggest news by far in Minocqua, Wisconsin was a series of bank robberies that had all 3,300 residents looking over their shoulders and clutching their wallets any time they stepped foot into one of their local banks. But when Minocqua Police got a frantic 911 call from Park City Credit Union on the evening of April 28, what they would find inside was far worse than a robbery. Even though police would quickly put together a picture of what transpired inside of that bank, it would take another 34 years for law enforcement to finally get to the bottom of one of the most infamous crimes in Wisconsin history. For 100s more stories like this one, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @MrBallenSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
