Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 2005's Psychonauts. We stay in the same year as our last game, and dive into a little of the prehistory of the game before diving into the game proper. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Coach Oleander's Brain Issues covered: making something for someone else to own, spinning off from LucasArts, staying true to their persona, being a more open studio, documentaries about the studio, the possibility of the studio closing, how the game starts, a super stylistic game, clear identity, bringing individuality to each character, asymmetry, offending the efficient developer, hand-crafting everything, impeccable writing and voice acting, themes coming through later, trailblazing, an indie scene in San Francisco, changing guards at publishers, drawing on psychology for its setting, a cohesive and pure game, exploring two tutorial areas, customizing buckets of figments of imagination, building engine game and studio together, crunch-tastic development, a variety of action and platforming primitives, an underimplemented feel and polish, fighting the camera, systemic cameras that have trouble covering everything, a big swing, asymmetric multiplayer modes, mutators, an internal mail alias, voice over IP, what do you need to support an MP game post-launch, inventory tetris, risk to return to get a loot item, a vestigial element of games, forcing hard choices or loops, re-examining genre "defaults," informing our own work, Octavia's gadget system, giving more agency to the player, a shifting meta, a wide tunnel of known options.  Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Tim Schafer, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, LucasArts, Microsoft, Ed Fries, Majesco, 2015, Metal of Honor: Allied Assault, Infinity Ward, Call of Duty, Jason West, Vince Zapella, Nihilistic, Infinite Machine, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Phantom Menace, Dean Sharpe, Kalani Streicher, Broken Age, Unreal Engine, Kiln, Two Player Productions, Scott Campbell, Disney, Warner Bros, Studio Ghibli, Peter Chan, Day of the Tentacle, SW: Republic Commando, Beyond Good & Evil, Monkey Island (series), Spyro, Super Mario (series), Illumination, Braid, Celeste, Choice Provisions/Gaijin Games, Super Meat Boy, Team Meat, World of Goo, Crystal Dynamics, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Ocarina of Time, Ashton Herrmann, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Duke Nuke'em, Hunt: Showdown, Repo, Peak, Matthew, Outlaws, Aliens vs Predator, Starcraft, Matthew, Diablo, Animal Crossing, Resident Evil (series), Harley Baldwin, Halo, DOOM (1993), Maas, Project: Octavia, Troy Mashburn, Thief (series), Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. PlayStation dropped over an hour of announcements in its June 2026 State of Play, and on this episode of Geek Freaks Headlines we rank the top three that mattered most. Marvel's Wolverine came out swinging with a long gameplay section, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis got a fresh look that brings hope and a little hesitation, and a surprise God of War spin-off walked in and took the whole show. Full game-by-game breakdowns are coming in the next videos and podcast, so consider this the fast, ranked reaction while it is still fresh. This is a solo rundown of the three standouts from the showcase. Marvel's Wolverine leads with roughly eight minutes of gameplay and a stacked character lineup. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis earns cautious optimism, with Crystal Dynamics in the driver's seat but Amazon Game Studios involvement and a heavy AI push raising an eyebrow. And the one that flipped the whole hype list on its head is God of War Laufey, the new spin-off following Faye through the afterlife. There is a lot more to get into, and we save the deeper cast and mechanics talk for the next episode.00:00 Marvel's Wolverine and that eight-minute gameplay drop00:15 Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the promise and the AI worry00:32 God of War Laufey takes the entire show00:47 Your turn, plus a new episode is live todayMarvel's Wolverine showed around eight minutes of gameplay and a strong roster, with Jean Grey, Sabretooth, and Omega Red all in the mix. It looked great and is the safe bet for a big release.Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis lands in the hope-with-caution column. Crystal Dynamics leading is a plus, but the Amazon Game Studios involvement has been hit and miss, and the heavy reliance on AI is a real concern. The upside is the mechanics leaning on what worked best in past entries.God of War Laufey is the surprise of the night and the new number one. It follows Faye, the wife of Kratos, as she enters the afterlife, and it pairs a beautiful world with fast combat.Bigger breakdowns are on the way. The full cast talk and mechanics deep look are saved for upcoming episodes."For me, the one that really took the show, and I thought Wolverine was going to be the one, that's God of War Laufey.""Beautiful world, fast combat. Oh, it's so good.""That's now at the top of my hype list, and I didn't even know what was coming."What had you most hyped from the State of Play? Are you riding with God of War Laufey, or is Wolverine still your pick? Drop your top three and we will read picks on the next episode. If this rundown helped, follow Geek Freaks Headlines wherever you listen, leave a quick rating and review to help more geeks find the show, and share the episode with the friend who has way too many opinions about PlayStation. Once more, Xbox's summer showcase finds itself on the Sunday of Summer Games Fest weekend! It's there that they'll pull the lid off their 25th anniversary celebration with a deep dive on Gears Of War: E-Day alongside what will no doubt feature the likes of Fable, Halo, and plenty of other games. The Dukes find themselves mighty curious what Coalition has planned for Gears Of War this time around. Much like Halo, Gears Of War is known for its suite of modes that made it so dominant during the 360 days. Seeing how Halo Infinite struggled to ship with campaign, forge, and multiplayer attached, can Gears have a similar issue with its campaign, horde more, and multiplayer? Speaking of multiplayer, will this latest rendition appeal to the wall bouncers or the casuals? Furthermore, how far will the gameplay be taken from an innovation standpoint when this is the youngest we've ever seen Marcus and Dom? The questions are many, but the outcome is tantalizing as Developer Directs during the summer have established themselves as games where there is far more than usual to be shown off. All of our answers arrive on June 7th, but why not listen to the Dukes gab about this and much more until then, right? This episode unpacks the evolving balance between creativity and business in today's gaming industry, starting with insights from Gnosia's producer on why great games don't succeed on creativity alone. We explore how major IP continues to shape the market, including a new Lord of the Rings project reportedly in development by Crystal Dynamics with significant international backing. On the indie side, Indie.io is launching a new subscription model aimed at solving discoverability challenges for smaller developers, signaling a shift in how games reach audiences. Finally, we examine the growing convergence of gaming and entertainment giants, as The Walt Disney Company is rumored to be considering a future acquisition of Epic Games—a move that could redefine the boundaries between gaming, film, and immersive experiences.0:00 Intro1:00 Update14:27 “Great games almost never sell just because they're great.”  https://tinyurl.com/4emsxhym 22:33 Veteran Studio Working On New Lord of the Rings Game https://tinyurl.com/mu8dva79  30:56 A Game Pass for indie games https://tinyurl.com/4n4pzstn  46:58 Disney might acquire Epic Games https://tinyurl.com/yxt943wv 1:01:24 OutroLEAVE A LIKE and a comment, thanks for watching/listening!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------PODCAST                ►► https://anchor.fm/m2podcastAMAZON Music         ► https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/091902c3-b83b-487c-8fe7-4c96787434fe/M2-PodcastAPPLE                          ► https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1531832410BREAKER                     ► https://www.breaker.audio/m2-podcast-2CASTRO                       ► https://castro.fm/podcast/6f69d373-d879-46d9-9f1c-bcf7c4bf1741GOOGLE                       ► https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zNTYwNWZiMC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw==OVERCAST                   ► https://overcast.fm/itunes1531832410/m2-podcastPOCKETCASTS           ► https://pca.st/5jghvf6eRADIOPUBLIC             ► https://radiopublic.com/m2-podcast-GMZkY4SPOTIFY                      ► https://open.spotify.com/show/2VedhO03IRoHERJqF6Sy87STICHER                      ► https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/m2-podcastTUNEIN                        ► http://tun.in/pj3ZI#podcast JOIN THE DISCORD!  ►► https://discord.gg/Kp5Gre6KyleHeath Socials:TIKTOK           ►► https://www.tiktok.com/@mrjkheathTWITCH          ►► https://www.twitch.tv/kyleheathTWITTER        ►► https://twitter.com/mrjkheathYOUTUBE       ►► https://www.youtube.com/MrJkheathMadMikeWillEatU Socials:TIKTOK           ►► https://www.tiktok.com/@madmikewilleatuTWITCH          ►► https://www.twitch.tv/madmikewilleatu/aboutTWITTER        ►► https://twitter.com/madmikewilleatuYOUTUBE       ►► https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1MoIvzyMDvH_5Ta

We discuss DLSS 5 and how it's adding to the AI slopness of the game industry. SHOW DOT POINTS The introduction of DLSS5 has sparked significant backlash from gamers. AI technology in gaming can alter the original artistic intent of games. NVIDIA's DLSS5 aims to enhance graphics but raises concerns about photorealism. The gaming industry is experiencing a wave of layoffs and restructuring. Ubisoft's Red Storm Entertainment has shifted focus to tech support roles. Crystal Dynamics has faced multiple rounds of layoffs in a year. Leadership indecisiveness can lead to repeated layoffs and restructuring. The gaming community is critical of unnecessary technological advancements. There is a call for better management practices in gaming studios. The future of beloved franchises like Splinter Cell remains uncertain. The wealthy elite often rely on bonuses to maintain their lifestyle. Japanese publisher Atlas is raising salaries and reducing overtime. Staff retention is crucial for efficient game development. The rapid release of games in Japan contrasts with Western studios. Anticipation for Persona Six is high among fans. Starfield is set to release on PS5 soon. Nintendo Switch 2 has received a notable update. Refunding games on Steam can be a necessary choice. Supporting indie developers is important for the gaming ecosystem. April is packed with exciting game releases. YOUR HOSTS

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new game in our series on independent games with 2004's Cave Story. We briefly set the game in its time, talk a little about its developer, and then talk about the game proper. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: A couple of hours Issues covered: freeware vs democratized indie dev and publishing, Japanese independent development, an indie darling, likely antecedents, 2004 in review, the end of a cycle, standing out in a stacked year, sticking it out, breaking through onto Nintendo platforms, early independent success on the Switch platform, influences and what's in the mix, weapon leveling, more story than expected, characters and dialog, more adventure, having a mess of villagers, setting up mysteries, merging lots of elements into their story and interactions, a spike at the end, adding puzzle-y elements, keys and keys that are not keys, threads of characters and relationships, something that is more than a MetroidVania, a skill-based game, "you're a really good person," forgetting a console came out, having the opportunity to play off-the-beaten path games, not needing a map, the dangers of categorization, how the platforming feels, fear of skill-based need, becoming one with the controller, an emotional response, empathetic response, catharsis, building the dam and breaking it, graceful building, manipulation in art, can a movie version work vs the interactivity, shock in literary fiction. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Nintendo Switch, Fez, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, Cara Ellison, Downwell, Wii, Crystal Dynamics, Super Meatboy, Metroid, Nifflas, Knytt, n/n+/n++, Pixeljunk (series), Q-Games, Dylan Cuthbert, World of Warcraft, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, The Sims 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Doom 3, Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal, Silent Hill 4: The Room, GTA: San Andreas, Far Cry, Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Star Wars: Battlefront, Pikmin 2, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Jak 3, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Katamari Damacy, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Republic Commando, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, WiiWare/DSi, PS Vita, Net Yaroze, Nicalis, Castlevania, MegaMan, CapCom, Bionic Commando, Sega, Sonic (series), Square Enix, Zelda (series), Final Fantasy IX, Dark Souls (series), The Seven Samurai, Firewatch, Animal Well, Spelunky (series), Hollow Knight, Gone Home, Ashton Herrmann, Last of Us, Shadow of the Colossus, Shakespeare, Outer Wilds, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  Next time: Finish Cave Story Twitch Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com
