Another hole in my backlog is filled! Well sort of. I'm joined by my original cohost with the mohost Justin to talk about the Sega classic ToeJam & Earl! This game was the only game I was not able to beat for backlog month. What was it about this game that made me not be able to finish it? It ended up being tough for me to answer but Justin and I break down a lot of the facets of this iconic game and what we felt ultimately still holds up and doesnt hold up all these years later. Sega Mania Magazine brings you your slightly unusual dose of madness as we press on in our new four-man podcast format. Alex, Rob, Steve and Simon won't let you down though, it's still nearly two hours of chuffin' nonsense.  The Mega Drive rankings enter the year of 1994, covered by Issue 5 of our wonderful magazine, and we begin with Sonic 3, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Pete Sampras Tennis, and ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron. Will Sonic 3 top our list? Will it even be the top Sonic game? You know what to do.  We have some more questions that cover everything from our biggest Sega Mania regret to whether we like dark nights. It's the typical cornucopia of craziness from you lovely lot. Don't forget (and, seriously, don't forget because we've basically run out now) to get your questions in to podcast@sega-mania.com to immortalise yourself in podcast format. It's time, maniacs, for yet another episode of our glorious podcast. This time, rather than playing the promised 'game we missed' we have a big circle jerk over Issue 5 of the magazine, because it won't sell itself now will it?  We've got behind the scenes insight into a variety of the upcoming reviews (including the game that broke Sam), Steve tells us all about his interview with the creator of ToeJam & Earl, Rob reveals the scoop on a certain popstar's connection to the music in Sonic 3, Alex wonders where the hell Michael Jordan is, and Tim tells us how tired it all made him. Worth it.  Our rankings continue with the usual amount of controversy, bargaining, swearing, reminiscing, and holding Sam's old reviews to account. Getting ranked right in the you-know-what this time are six 1992 titles from Issue 3: Sonic 2, Galaxy Force II, Dungeons & Dragons, World of Illusion, Atomic Runner, and The Terminator.  We end the show, as always, with another stonking listener question that has us all waxing lyrical about the local video game shops we used to frequent in happier times.   Don't forget to get your questions in to podcast@sega-mania.com and buy your copy of Issue 5 of Sega Mania Magazine at https://www.sega-mania.com/ now!

We're back once again for more Sega Mania Podcast madness! Apologies this is coming out a bit late, but our big mean overlord told us we had to finish off some poxy magazine so we crunched on that and Alex didn't have time to edit this absolute mammoth episode until now.  We carry on the new tradition of covering a game we missed in the magazine with Robocop vs The Terminator, and it's an absolute banger. No more Alex the Kidd anger here, folks! Part 2 is the continuation of ranking every Mega Drive game featured in the mag thus far, and on the docket this time are the remaining titles from Issue 2. Shadow of the Beast, Streets of Rage, OutRun, Turrican, Road Rash, Alien Storm, and ToeJam & Earl get ranked good and proper - and we actually all played the games beforehand so no more abstaining!  Part 3 is more of your wonderful listener questions, where we talk about our biggest gaming shames, Sega games with the best potential for a movie tie-in, and someone made Rob tell another ghost story. It's as awesome as usual. Get your questions in to podcast@sega-mania.com to join in.  Thanks for listening, make sure you get your copy of Issue 5 over at www.sega-mania.com now it's gone to press, and pay attention for a promo code for 15% off Issues 1-4. ToeJam & Earl won our Patreon Poll last month, and now that I've the chance to spend time with it, I gotta say - well done, hot dogs. This game kicks an insane amount of ass.    If you've never played it, you control a pair of aliens named Toe Jam & Earl who have crash landed on Earth. You help them collect the pieces of their ship, while avoiding some of the weirdest enemies I've ever seen in a video game. You pick up presents along the way that contain random items; some good, some bad. What makes this game special is that every game can be different. You never know what's in a present until you open it. It's like a retro rogue like, and it's spectacular.    My friend Kait joins me on the show this week, and we geek out all over these stupid aliens and their weird presents. ToeJam & Earl is now one of my absolute favourite Genesis games, and I hope our show this week convinces you to give it a shot if you haven't.   And before we get funky, it's another edition Remember The Game Infamous Intro!    This week, we talk about stuff like kids listening to this podcast, a potential Metal Gear Solid remake, what other consoles would I like to see get the "mini" treatment, and I rant about SEGA Saturn fans again.   Plus, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. George Lucas pushed to capitalize on cuteness after Return of the Jedi left theaters with two made-for-television Ewok features and two seasons of animated Endorians in Nelvana’s Ewoks. Both shazbazzar and JediShua love every incarnation of the little furry guys and share their appreciation for the tribe from Bright Tree Village before taking another trip through time in the dark comedy/love story/science fiction movie, Time After Time.   In the NEWS Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge may open with little pomp and circumstance — perhaps with even a single tweet. We Love Our Cereal… …and so will you.  It seems that these days, time after time we discover new cereals in supermarkets across the nation.  Today, JediShua quickly reviews several new cereals as EarBuds and the Roving Spoonster chime in on what they are finding in store aisles, home pantries, and cereal bowls everywhere.   Saturday Mornings: Ewoks From fall 1985 to spring 1987, shazbazzar and JediShua enjoyed Ewoks on Saturday mornings — with and without Droids.  Wicket W. Warwick is joined by Princess Kneesaa and all their friends time after time on Saturdays in this short-lived cartoon by Nelvana.     Time After Time Malcolm McDowell, David Warner, and Mary Steenburgen star in this week’s time-traveling tale about inventor H.G. Wells’ pursuit of villainous Jack the Ripper through time in the machine he created.  1979’s Time After Time is an unforgettable story that many remember seeing on cable or renting at the video store.  Whether this movie is a sci-fi flick, a love story, or a dark comedy is your guess.  One thing is certain, Time After Time is clearly a product of the disco era.   TechnoRetro Arcade Answering the popularity of Nintendo’s NES, Sega pushed its Sega Genesis to retail outlets in 1989, hoping to gain some of the home console business with its 16-bit system. Podcast breakdown: 0:40       Interview with Marc Laidlaw 1:04:50  Break 1:05:16  Feedback/Questions Issues covered: getting started at Valve, looking at story in first person games, unshipped game at Valve, getting Quake community people to work on Half-Life, the early plan for the company, finding features by building lots of tests, randomly discussing features with press, making outrageous promises to spur on the team, the development of a fully realized place, totality of effect, designing from the bottom-up and fitting stuff together later, having employees who were used to working alone, going back to the drawing board, hinting at other levels and wanting the glory, non-physical spaces, lone wolves, needing an overall director to enforce co-authorship, using the Cabal to fulfill that role, being in the trenches and etching into your brain, living Half-Life for two years, avoiding the space marine trope, making the gimmick "science," doing science experiments in game development, intricacy of clockwork levels/Chinese puzzle boxes, the technology of magic, working to get a reaction, characters emerging from setting, bridging to Half-Life 2, magic tricks being even more impressive when you know how they're done, user testing, knowing what questions to ask, players not getting to the ends of games, trying to avoid having to teach the player, expecting a literate player, keeping it clean and transparent, having no model for the main character generating a constraint, reacting to player experiences of the demo, working out of a corner/desperation, creating within constraints, having too much freedom (analysis paralysis), Marc's work available on Kindle, taking breaks, writing in the early days of video games, always in the helmet, E3 memories/discussion. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Day of the Tentacle, Half-Life 2, Portal, Counterstrike: Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, DotA 2, Eric Wolpaw, Jay Pinkerton, id Software, Quake, Michael Abrash, Mike Harrington, Gabe Newell, WIRED Magazine, Worldcraft, Ben Morris, Prospero, John Guthrie (Choryoth), Steve Bond (Wedge), Blues News, Harry Teasley, Peter Molyneux, Edgar Allan Poe, Thieves' World anthologies, Randy Lundeen, Shigeru Miyamoto, Kelly Bailey, Dave Riller, Ken Birdwell, Dario Casali, Alfred Hitchcock, Microsoft, Uncharted 4, Duke Nuke'em, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Prey (2017), Nioh, Breath of the Wild, Bill Roper, Janos Flosser, Starfighter, Wayne Cline, Republic Commando, Ryan Kaufman, Mike Stemmle, Hal Barwood, Sean Clark, Jonathan Ackley, Larry Ahern, Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, RebelFM, Phil Rosehill, Link to the Past, Super Metroid, ToeJam & Earl, LucasArts, Alexander Farr, Kotaku, Final Fantasy 9, Jason Schreier, Tacoma, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, Halo 5, 343 Industries, Bethesda Game Studios, Unreal, Nintendo Wii, Evil Avatar, Phil Kollar, Polygon, Sony, Metal Gear (series), Witcher III, Anthem, No Man's Sky, Hello Games, Joe Danger, Assassin's Creed (series), Red Dead (series), PAX, Ficus/@giant_rat. After all the recent furor over Metal Gear Survive and Metroid Prime Federation Force, we for some reason decided it'd be a good idea to delve into five other games that turned traditionally single-player series into four-player co-op-fests, sometimes with amazing results. After that, we shift our focus to Attack on Titan, a new ToeJam & Earl, and the Super NES games you never got around to despite everyone saying they're great.

Surprisingly, June turned out to be a hell of a month for gaming. Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Justin run through their standout games and answer questions about Trenched, Crysis 2, Borderlands, Shadows of the Damned and others. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We’ve been complaining a lot lately about our backlog of summer video games, time to see if we’ve done anything about it. That is after we catch up on our Threesomes of the Week to see what else is distracting us from gaming like more books from Justin G. The On the Spot question wants us to not feel so lonely in our gaming endeavors and asks us to recall our favorite gaming co-op moment where we learn about the “genesis” of drunken Contra. The games of the month discussion finds out a bit more behind Ethan’s experience with his recently reviewed copy of Trenched, Justin G and Cole offer another take on Crysis 2, and Justin L is on a quest to find gaming bliss when Alice and Hunted disappoint him. Perhaps, Shadows of the Damned will have enough dick jokes to bring back the fun. We take a time out to prepare you for Mario Madness and the Horrible Night Out before figuring out who will offer the best hole digger simulator. Seriously, Terraria and Minecraft can keep on pushing each other, we’re fine with that. You hear a lot of talk these days about games with open worlds, co-op gameplay, where exploration is key. Those three very buzz-worthy concepts of today also came into play in our fourth Game Club game, ToeJam & Earl for the Sega Genesis. One of the era's few co-op games, its emphasis was not on combat unlike so many of the other games it shared the shelf with. It was about avoiding enemies, managing your items, and (if you had a buddy to play with) teamwork. In the second segment we talk all about TJ&E and our experiences with it.But of course we also discuss the games we played this week, which include N+, Dragon Quest Swords, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, The Club, Rock Band, Dynasty Warriors 6 and Lost Odyssey. Thanks for listening!
