Apple's new iPhone expected to sell well in India

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, September 11, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started. The Indian equities markets rose for a second consecutive trading session yesterday. Both the Sensex and the Nifty rose by around 0.4 percent on Tuesday. After a lull the previous two years, startup IPOs are back. 10 such new age companies have gone public so far this year. The market is now conducive for such listings, and investors continue to pour in more money than ever. But this isn't just an IPO momentum: investors have held on to their shares well after a bumper listing. But in his detailed story, Abhishek Mukherjee advises some caution. He writes that even the most promising startup will have to beat incredible odds to emerge as a market leader. This process takes many years, if not decades. In a bull market, every stock seems like the next best thing — investors would do well to keep a long-term outlook in mind.On Monday, Apple's Tim Cook unveiled the latest iPhones. While other companies like Google and Samsung have dipped their toes into AI-driven phones, Apple's global reach—boasting about 1.3 billion active users—means it has the clout to push AI into the mainstream. Apple's track record of transforming industries, like it did with music through the iPod and iTunes, suggests it could do the same with AI technology, writes Shouvik Das. However, there's some debate about how essential AI is in smartphones right now. While previous Apple innovations like the touchscreen became indispensable, AI features are seen more as helpful extras rather than must-haves at this stage. Shouvik also spoke to analysts and retailers, who expect Apple's new phones to make a significant dent in India. A sales boost of nearly 20 percent is expected in the next three months, as the launch coincides with the festive period in India. The average price of the new iphone is likely to be 75,000 rupees, up from 69,000 for the previous model. However, analysts expect a rise in demand due to the new AI features. Get ready to see a host of people with shiny new iphones soon.India's retail inflation for August is anticipated to remain stable at 3.5%, buoyed by a favourable statistical base effect, according to a survey by Mint of 27 economists. This level is comfortably below RBI's medium-term target of 4%, suggesting inflation is under control for the second consecutive month. While this might seem like good news, experts who spoke to Mint's Payal Bhattacharya and Manjul Paul, advised not to jump to conclusions about long-term trends just yet. The stability in August's inflation is partly due to expected declines in food prices, which make up nearly 40% of the inflation basket, but again, this too would be because of a favourable base effect. The real test will be the impact of September's rainfall on food inflation, as adverse weather could disrupt this positive trend. Biryani has truly become India's favourite go-to food, not just at festive gatherings but as an everyday meal. Thanks to food delivery giants like Zomato and Swiggy, grabbing a plate of biryani is now as easy as ordering a pizza. Swiggy, in fact, saw a whopping 250 biryani orders per minute during last year's India-Pakistan world cup match! This biryani boom is also spurring a surge in basmati rice sales, especially in bulk. Ayush Gupta from KRBL, a rice processing company, told Mint's Suneera Tandon that their bulk rice sales have skyrocketed, growing 20-25% each year post-COVID, particularly in the South where biryani is a staple. But the craze isn't just a southern phenomenon anymore; it's nationwide. Recognizing this trend, rice companies are getting creative, rolling out biryani mixes and kits for easy home cooking, aiming to replicate the restaurant experience in your kitchen. Whether it's a match day or any day, it seems like biryani is on everyone's menu.

"There is no reference to the biryani in the popular domain earlier than 125 years ago. Biryani was just one of the many varieties of pulao. One text tells us that no civilised gourmet in Lucknow touched biryani. They only ate yakhni pulao. So how has biryani become so important? Because if you are a show off and nouveau riche, you could show that, look, I've cooked something so expensive and exotic for my guests! Yes, the Nizams of Hyderabad, with the Hyderabadi dum ki biryani, did cultivate it into a very good art form. But the Nizams rose only after the decline of the Mughals so the biryani came from the Nizam who was experimenting with Turkish and Persian food. The food was from different directions. The biryani has been mythologised and mystified as an exotic dish so it has become aspirational. But a pulao is a pulao is a pulao and, with all due respect to biryani lovers, a biryani is a bit of a con! The biryani rose after 1857 to please the British. People wanted to go outside the pulao route and make it so complicated that it was like a jigsaw puzzle for them to unravel - ki kha kya rahe hai!" - Pushpesh Pant, author, 'Lazzatnama; Recipes of India' talks to Manjula Narayan about biryanis and pulaos, recipes of the Mahabharata, prawn poha, Kayasth mock meat dishes, North Eastern cuisine, kheers and khichdis, and how the modern kitchen has taken the drudgery out of cooking, among many other interesting things.

Hello!Rice is a very ancient food…People ate rice perhaps from 12000 BCE gathered with other seeds and nuts. Today every third person on earth eats rice every day in one form or another. Rice is grown on about 250 million farms in 112 countries. But one dish more than any other, defines the global reach of rice and how it is claimed by many nations and has a deep, complex history: Biryani! From Persian "birinj biriyan" - literally, fried rice, to the Mughal Empire and an old Mughlai recipe from Shah Jahan's kitchen, to subtle pulaos that let the fragrance and flavour of highly aromatic rice shine through and would have been considered more refined and fit for a king there's a rich cultural trail to follow in todays exploration of one of my favourite rice dishes!Enjoy! The Delicious Legacy Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-delicious-legacy. Kurdish language class bridges generations and cultures in a Moorhead classroom

North Star Journey

Updated: 12:20 p.m.Zak Amin has worked as a liaison to Kurdish families, and as an English as a second language instructor at Moorhead Public Schools. This fall he started a new class for Kurdish students to learn about their language, culture and history. Amin not only teaches Kurdish language to these students, he teaches English as a second language to many of their parents. He saw a communication barrier that needed to be addressed.“Kids sometimes have needs they need to express, but the only way they can express it fully is in English, they cannot actually convey the message fully to their parents because their parents English is very limited,” said Amin. And parents get frustrated trying to rely on a mix of Kurdish and English to talk to their children. That communication struggle was the impetus for this class. “My main goal was to create a bridge and build a stronger relationship between the parents and the kids,” explained Amin.Amin came to the U.S. nine years ago. He previously taught school in Kurdistan before serving as a U.S. military translator for eight years. The class started as an after-school offering, through the Kurdish American Development Organization, which helps connect Kurdish people with community resources. This fall the Amin began offering the class at the high school.Represent yourselfDuring a recent session, eight high schools students listened intently as he discussed Kurdish cuisine. The students are all Kurdish from 9th through 12th grade and they've chosen to take this new elective class. “Who knows what Biryani is?” Amin asked. Senior Rayan Salih accurately described the dish as rice mixed with vegetables. Salih came to the U.S. a decade ago. This class is motivating him to embrace his own identity. “I feel like no matter what you are, where you're from, you should always represent yourself because I feel like it's just right,” he said. Improving his Kurdish language skills and learning about Kurdish culture and history is also about respecting his elders.“What your people did, it's like they did a lot for you to be where you're at right now,” Salih said. “That's why I represent my culture and my ethnicity.”Like many of the students in this class, Salih comes from the Duhok area of Iraq. Amin said there are three primary languages and many dialects among Kurdish people. Most of the students speak Behdini.Kurdish is spoken in the homes of 239 families with students in Moorhead schools, according to district officials. It's the most common language spoken at home in the district, after English. There are 17 students currently enrolled in this new Kurdish language and culture elective.Making connectionsAyaah Kakasaif is a ninth grader. She came to the U.S. as a very young child. Her parents speak Kurdish, but most of her friends speak English and she feels the need to be fluent in both. “A couple of months ago I went back to Kurdistan and they were all talking, their vocabulary was so well and mine wasn't. I wanted to talk to them and I wanted to say stuff to them, but I didn't really know how and I didn't have the right words," said Kakasaif, explaining why she signed up for this class. “I wanted to be able to speak to my family more and understand them and feel like I'm actually with them,” she said.Kakasaif calls the class a gift for Kurdish students. Moorhead school officials say there are 56 different languages spoken in families with students in the district. Kurdish and Somali are the two most common after English. High School Principal Josh Haag said this class fits well with the district goal of connecting with an increasingly diverse student body. “Sometimes there's that disconnect of ‘nothing that goes on here is what I see when I leave here,'” Haag said. “It's the, ‘how is this going to affect me in my life, in my world,'” he said. “I think that's what we're trying to do.”Amin said Kurdish students and parents are excited about the class. He hopes to expand the Kurdish language offerings next year. And Amin thinks improving communication between parents and students can help him achieve a larger goal. “Trying to make them more engaged into American society,” he said. “The ultimate goal is to make the parents more adapted to American society and make the kids remember about their culture and identity.”Want more Fargo-Moorhead news? The diet line offers 0 calories, 0 carbs, 0 sugars, and no caffeine – perfect for mixers or just enjoying on a warm summer day (or any day, for that matter); always Wisconsin-based, you can follow @jollygoodsoda on social for the latest on new flavors, fun promotions, and more. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4   Campfire Conversation: Eric and Ana welcome frequent collaborator Apurba Banerjee back into The Cabin for a second look at “Worldwide Cuisine in Wisconsin.” Sure, we love our cheese, brats, and beer but sometimes you want to experience something less common and more exotic. We head across the state to find places you can enjoy dishes from around the world. We highlight southeast Asia a fair amount in this conversation, so Apurba does a little analysis on the differences in, for example, Korean cuisine vs. Thai vs. Lao, especially with their use of spices. Eric, Ana, and Apurba then dive into a variety of locations where you can experience Filipino Lumpia, Korean BBQ, Pho (watch how you pronounce it!), Tom Yum and Tom Kai Soup, Momo, and more southeast Asian dishes. We also discuss African dishes such as Sambua, Josef rice, peanut stew, fufu (a pounded yam), spicy beef eugusi, and more; Indian and Himalayan dishes from Smoke Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Chops to achaar, Biryani dishes, Dal, Chickpea Masala, and more.We also touch on South America with emerging Peruvian and Venezuelan cuisine becoming increasingly popular across Wisconsin. Plus, a little shout-out to Polish food with a pierogi place on the peninsula - of Door. Where you can get these fantastic foods? We share it with you in “World Cuisine in Wisconsin, Part 2,” this week's episode of The Cabin!Inside SponsorsGroup Health Trust:  https://bit.ly/3JMizCX    NAMIWalks: https://www.namiwalks.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.event&eventID=1358

A Hijra (transsexualwoman) was murdered in 1852. Was the murderer her jilted lover? or was it her disciple? Whoever the perpetrator may be, for the judges, the identity of the accused mattered lesser than that of the victim. In fact, the honorable judges dedicated a lot of space in that judgment criminalizing the victim and others like this. In this episode, we look at how this murder led the Colonial British government started a state-sponsored program to "eradicate" the Hijra Community in the North Western Provinces. We also talk about how this draconian legislation's effect on India last well into the 21st Century, and in many ways still affects transgender community in our country.  You can support us by buying us a Biryani at :  1. https://ko-fi.com/khoonipodcast  2. https://khoonistore.myinstamojo.com/product/437437/buy-us-a-biryani/  Follow us on our socials :  Instagram: @khoonipodcast  Twitter : @khoonithepodcast  Facebook : Khooni The Crimes of India Podcast  Youtube : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWvZyPzovJLZ7ZJ2wHgSMng Sources : 1. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-48442934 2. https://thekootneeti.in/2020/12/20/hijras-disposition-during-british-colonization/ 3. https://law.unimelb.edu.au/centres/alc/engagement/past-events/2019-past-events/governing-gender-and-sexuality-in-colonial-india-the-hijra,-c.-1850-1900 4. https://www.shethepeople.tv/news/17-year-old-tamil-nadu-trans-girl-murdered-by-brother-dakshayani/ 5. https://tdor.translivesmatter.info/reports/2021/08/30/dakshayani_salem-tamil-nadu-india_e636fdf5 6. https://www.indiatvnews.com/crime/madhya-pradesh-transgender-body-cut-into-two-pieces-in-indore-accused-nabbed-latest-updates-mohsin-zoya-kinnar-noor-mohammad-khajrana-area-2022-09-01-804484 7. https://tdor.translivesmatter.info/reports/2022/08/30/zoya_indore-madhya-pradesh-india_8b0a04e3

Sneha Anne Philip was a medical intern in New York in 2001. She stepped out to run errands on 10th September 2001, a day before the entire world changed. Her family says that she perished in the attack on the Twin Towers when she went in to help the injured, but the NYPD had other theories. In this episode, we look at the story of a woman who was first declared a victim of 9/11, and then her name was removed and finally added again. Mario, Mario, Mario. This lunatic, no doubt trying to get back at Jackie for the last episode's surprise drink, brought a secret sausage to the party (apologies to Seth Rogen). But as Porky Pig never said, "that ISN'T all folks." This episode's featured item is Arroz Con Salchichas, a childhood favorite and adult comfort food for Mario. Will Jackie use the opportunity to dunk on something near and dear to his friend, or does this snack join Sushi and Biryani in the hallowed halls of stuff he digs now? We propose these questions. The episode has the answers. Listen and learn some Puerto Rican geography while you're at it. New episodes every other Thursday. On this episode of the Dance Cry Dance Break, we open with “Answer Inc.,” a story by Corey Farrenkopf followed by Inhuman, a track from the album Nothing Is by Nashville artist/producer Thomas Bryan Eaton. For Thomas Bryan Eaton, music is everything. Obsessed since childhood with sound and how you can make it, his musical journey has taken him all around this world. While often seen wandering around the fret boards of guitars & pedal steels with Miss Tess, Western Centuries, or JP Harris & the Tough Choices; Thomas also makes his own recordings reflecting his unique take on the music of America and beyond. Delving deep into the roots of music and searching for ways to push forward are at the core of his efforts & artistry.Bandcamp - Spotify - Instagram Corey Farrenkopf lives on Cape Cod with his wife, Gabrielle, and works as a librarian. His short stories have been published in Tiny Nightmares, The Southwest Review, Three-Lobed Burning Eye, Smokelong Quarterly, Catapult, Flash Fiction Online, Reckoning, Uncharted, Wigleaf, Bourbon Penn, and elsewhere. He is the Fiction Editor for The Cape Cod Poetry ReviewWebsite - Twitter - InstagramAnswer Inc. By Corey Farrenkopf Answer Inc. doesn't provide a company computer. For thirty-two fifty an hour, my old Mac does the job. The screen illuminates my face as I hunch over the keyboard. Every light is off in my basement apartment, the scent of microwaved Biryani filling the cramped space. I'm confined to the beanbag chair my parents let me take from my childhood bedroom, the faux leather slightly sticky beneath my back.  Once I log in, questions fill my ears. Is a Pomchi the right breed of dog for me? How far is too far to drive for a Tinder date before I look like a creep? If I can only afford to buy my father's diabetes medication or my brother's diabetes medication, whose should I buy? I'm not allowed a follow up question. I can't delve into which relative Asker C is closest with, which attended more of her high school drama performances, which calls on her birthday. No. They are paying for a one sentence reply, so one sentence is what they get. No, a cockapoo is the correct breed. Anything over fifty miles and you'll seem like an axe murderer. Strictly based on life expectancy, your brother. Sometimes I imagine my callers. Twenty-something with a perfect fade. Late thirties with a softening gym body. Early forties, grays coming in at the roots. It helps me answer, to humanize the anonymous caller numbers and blurred-out headshots. For fifty dollars, clients log on to have someone else make their decisions.  Should they get a face tattoo? How many cats is too many cats for their condo? Which is the best day of the week to bring up divorce to their blindsided spouse? I can see the allure. There are too many options these days, too many lives you can live, and none of them feel right. The vastness is crippling. If I had money, maybe I'd use the service. Employees get a twenty percent discount, but rent is steep.  My questions remain my own. *** I rarely get the same caller twice, except b582 that is.  Somehow, she's in my queue every day. I imagine she's in her thirties, short hair, eyes baggy from sleep. At least that's what her one sentence a day conveys. “Is the air in my apartment toxic?” she asked on her first call. I listened for the bleep of CO detectors. Finding none, I said “No, the air in your home is clean.” The next day she asked, “If my landlord is trying to poison me, how would I know?” After consulting a poison control Google search, I said, “You would feel light-headed and  nauseous.” Her daily questions morph from outward concerns to inner. “Is it crazy to believe your landlord is trying to kill you?” “Is it normal to fear the water coming from the tap?” “Is it normal to worry about what's coming for me?" To each question, given the times we live in, I say No it is completely normal to worry about X,Y, and Z as long as it doesn't rule your life.  *** After a month, I email my boss asking if I can get in touch with b582 to give her the number for a healthcare professional or therapist that may be better equipped for her questions than an ex-barista with a sociology degree. My supervisor writes back that of course there is no way to contact b582. Answer Inc. cares about customer privacy, and, if we were to pass b582 onto another service, we would be losing the fifty dollars per call, and that certainly isn't in the business plan.  We are a form of therapy, he says. The simplest form of therapy. *** On b582's hundredth call, I refuse to answer her question about fearing the inhuman silhouette standing on her street corner. Instead, I give her my cellphone number, rattling off the digits, hoping my supervisors aren't listening in. “There's got to be a better way of doing this. I can't give you the help you need. Call me and we'll figure something out.” b582 pauses.  “But what about the silhouette?” She asks after a minute. I swallow whatever response I thought I'd come up with and simply tell her, “If it's close to your house, yes, go lock your doors.”  Then she hangs up and my next caller is on, asking me about haircare products and flammability around tiki-torches. *** I wait for an unknown number to light up my cellphone screen, but nothing happens. I continue to answer questions about organic sheets, dopamine deficiency, and the most successful ways to potty train a cat, with no interruptions. I end my shift at eight o'clock and move to the kitchen where I microwave instant cup noodles and continue to wait for her call. But the call doesn't come. I worry about how quick she locked the door.  *** The next morning, b582's ID pops up on my screen. She neglected my personal number, but I'm cool with that simply for the fact whatever she thought she saw beneath that streetlight didn't get her in the night. I click “accept” and wait for her voice. “How do you live in this world?” she asks, words coming quick, as if startled. I've given up on one sentence replies. If she isn't going to call my actual number, this is the only chance, the only way I might help “By following the truth. Listening to facts. Believing those you love. Not letting every fear swallow your day.” Each option sounds sensical as I say it, but there is a hesitancy in the back of my throat, an uncertainty clinging to my tongue. “But everyone possesses their own individual truth. You're seeing a different world than I'm seeing.” “Nope, there's one world and we're all sharing it.” I'm waiting for my supervisor to come on the line to end the call, but it's just the two of us, despite the fact we've far surpassed the time limit. My heart rate is up. I can smell my own sweat. “You tell yourself what you need to. Our worlds aren't the same, but they might be some day. You couldn't do your job if they were the same. You'd have too many questions and there'd never be enough answers. You'd always be too afraid of what's coming.” “What is coming? Is it that silhouette again?” I ask. “What's coming for me is also coming for you. It comes for all of us, eventually. Why do you think I'm so afraid?” “I assumed you had an anxiety disorder or a list of phobias, not this.”  “We all have anxieties,” she replies. In the background, footsteps fall on hardwood, boots approaching from down a long hallway. “But this is different. It has arrived and I never learned how to prepare.” “Prepare for what?” “You'll know it when it gets to you. All I can say is you need to be the one asking the questions, not the one giving…” Then the line goes dead. “No, wait,” I reply, leaning forward, my face close to the screen as I frantically search for some trace of b582. An account number. An email. Something I might have previously overlooked. There's no redial option, no number I can reconnect with. It's just me and the next question.  “What's the cheapest wine I can get away with on a first date?” I want to ask if he's aware of what's coming for him, whatever got b582, but I hold my tongue.  “Twenty-eight a bottle,” I reply, not ready to be the one asking the questions.  Not yet.The Dance Cry Dance Break is written and produced by Natalie Bayne and recorded and edited by Moe Provencher. Theme music is Red Lines, by Dance Cry Dance Records artist Tiny Tiny. Dance Cry Dance is a collective record label in Seattle, WA. I loved discussing the heavier topics while also discussing puppies, biryani parties, and how women who are seen as vapid because they take extra time with their appearance or want to host parties doesn't mean they don't have added depth.
