In this episode of Diving Deep, Sam Fricker sits down with Damien Thomlinson, a former Australian Commando whose life took a dramatic turn in April 2009 during a night patrol in Southern Afghanistan. After his unit drove over an improvised explosive device, Damien sustained severe injuries leading to the amputation of both his legs. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he not only learned to walk again with prosthetic limbs but also pursued a career as a motivational speaker, inspiring audiences with his story of overcoming adversity. Damien's journey didn't stop there; he authored the best-selling autobiography Without Warning, participated in the TARGA Tasmania classic car rally, walked the demanding Kokoda Track, and competed in the 2014 and 2016 Invictus Games. Transitioning into acting, he was cast in the 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge, which received multiple Academy Award nominations. In 2019, Damien shifted his focus to golf, aiming to represent Australia on the international circuit. He won his first professional tournament in 2020, the Victorian All Inclusive Championship, and is now ranked among the top three multi-amputee golfers globally. Join us as we delve into Damien's extraordinary journey, exploring his unwavering determination and the lessons he's learned along the way. This is an episode you won't want to miss!

Kiwi motorsport legend Jim Richards' racing resume is incomparable. It includes seven Bathurst 1000 wins, four Australian Touring Car Championships, eight Targa Tasmania wins, three Nations Cup championships, two Touring Car Masters championships and title victories in categories including Australian NASCAR, GT-Production and Carrera Cup. Known as Gentleman Jim, he made a record 35 starts in the Bathurst 1000 between 1974 and 2006, and was inducted into the Supercars Hall of Fame that year and the Australian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2015. As Holden has its last showing at the iconic Bathurst 1000 this weekend it was only fitting that Jim Richards was Simon Barnett and James Daniels' guest for this week's Six and a Song. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast
We kick off this episode with Matt talking about Ford advertising the Mach 1 Mustang here in Australia. Mitch then talks about the International Olympic Committee including simracing in a digital Olympics via what is essentially GranTurismo Academy. Mitch then talks about the 300-Series' styling that was recently leaked online, which may be just for the Middle Eastern market; Australia, Japan, and other markets expected to get a different front end. Joseph then has another Public Service Announcement regarding our listeners who may be Dacia and Renault buyers, and then gets us talking about the new Ferrari 812 VS "Versione Speciale", that features a naturally-aspirated 9,500rpm V12 that pushes 610kw. Mitch then talks about the new GWM (Great Wall Motors) 2021 Baja Snake: Shelby dual-cab ute, that has NOTHING to do with Shelby, despite sharing the Shelby trade-marked stripe and name. Then Mitch talks about Honda going all electric by 2040, and Brabham will be bringing manufacturing to Australia with a new supercar.... Allegedly, and a Subaru 22B selling for over $400,000 AUD on Bring-A-Trailer in the US. Joseph then talks about the Valencia Formula E race becoming a joke, as more than half the field ran out of battery juice due to the race having 5 safety cars. Mitch then talks about Porsche investing into a firm that produces synthetic fuels for their Motorsport pursuits, and alternative fuels. Joseph then talks about the latest Targa Tasmania having 3 deaths in one weekend. We then end on the game. There is an old adage about motor racing. “Race on Sunday; Sell on Monday”. This was one of those passionate mantras that seem to motivate Holden and Ford during the glory years of the long-distance production car racing at Bathurst in the late 60s and most of the 70s. Holden kept at it for years after that more than Ford. Fred Brain is a classic example of someone who had a close association with Holden arising out of their racing at Bathurst. Fred grew up on a farm near Wagga and they did not get a television till 1969. He watched his first Bathurst race that year, won by Colin Bond and Tony Roberts in a Holden Monaro GTS 350. Subsequently he bought a genuine GTS 350 Monaro which he still has. He baught a second Monaro that he now races in the historic category. You can hear Fred reminisce about the life and times of his cars at: Some of the things Fred mentions are as follows: He took his genuine GTS350 off the road and parked it in a shed at the farm in the late 80s to restore in the near future. The restoration is going strong (if very slowly!!). He entered his racing Monaro In the East Coast classic (an attempt to get a Targa Tasmania going in NSW). I was his navigator. When we went through Oberon we were approach by a Catholic priest who was a Holden fan so he blessed the car. Lucky he wasn't a Ford fan or he would have done an exorcism. A young boy approaches the car at one stop and said how surprised he was to see the car as he ahad not seen one before. Fred noted that it was built before he was born. The young lad said “But I am 15 years old!”. The car at that stage was at least 30 years old. We also approached by a lady who was well into her middle age years, who was wearing a Monaro T-Shirt that she had had since she was a young girl. To her credit it still fitted although it was being stretched a little. She had loved Monaros from the beginning and still did to this day. A passion for the brand, especially when racing, does not however, guarantee continual sales. Fred's first regular car was a Toyota Corona and then he rally and Raced a Datsun 1600. He has owned a series of cars including a Valiant Pacer and a Ford station wagon (used as a tow car). His emotional attachment to Holden Monaros will help keep the history alive but he has little feeling for the American owned company that has decided to leave our market.
Christina Brinkerhoff is producing a documentary about her mother, past Cars Yeah guest Renee Brinkerhoff – as she conquers 7 continents driving in a 1956 Porsche 356. They are fresh off the 36-day Peking to Paris endurance rally that took place this past summer. The next challenge will be in Kenya in the East African Safari Classic Rally, a 9-day, 5,000 km run through Kenya and Tanzania. Prior to Africa Renee ran the La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, The Targa Tasmania in Australia, and The Caminos del Inca in South America. They will challenge the Antarctica Ice Challenge in 2121. Christina is a graduate of the USC Film School and a former talent agent. Through their Valkyrie Gives Foundation, she and her mom raise awareness of and funding for efforts against the global problem of child trafficking.

Episode 07 - Damien Thomlinson - from Afghanistan to Kokoda and amazing experiences in between. This week I interview another soldier, that's two weeks straight. Damien Thomlinson really is one out of the box. A Special Forces soldier that lost both of his legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan but didn't let that hold him back. He went on to compete on the World stage in snow boarding, crossed the Kokoda Track in PNG (yes I was there and witnessed this amazing feat) and has even acted in a film directed by Mel Gibson. It's very easy to give up in life when things don't go to plan. We've all had those days and wanted to quit, well i promise after you listen to this podcast with Damien, you will never have that thought again. The mind is stronger than the body will ever be. Bio: The story of Damien Thomlinson, an Australian veteran of the war in Afghanistan, is one that continues to evolve and inspire people around the world. Inspired by the military history of his Grandfather, Damien joined the Australian Defence Force and at the age of just 24 achieved his dream of becoming a Commando. This elite group is tasked with the most physically demanding, mentally challenging and dangerous roles in the armed forces, often behind enemy lines. It was while serving in Afghanistan with the 2nd Commando Regiment that Thomlinson’s life was changed forever. In April 2009, whilst on night patrol in Southern Afghanistan, Damien’s unit drove over an improvised Taliban bomb. Damien suffered horrendous injuries in the explosion, which resulted in both of his legs being amputated. The damage to his body was so severe his medical team claim it is a miracle he wasn’t killed. In fact there were many times throughout his immediate treatment and beyond that medical staff did not think he would pull through. Most people could not imagine recovering and moving on from something as debilitating as the loss of two limbs – but Damien isn’t most people, and giving up is not in his nature. Instead of sinking into depression and retreating from the world, Thomlinson decided to treat the loss of his legs as another challenge to be overcome, a challenge that would forever change his life. With no time for self-pity, Damien threw himself into his rehabilitation and set about re-claiming his life, on his terms – a testament to his incredible drive and determination. With a great deal of commitment and hard work he taught himself to walk again with state of the art prosthetic legs. His inspirational mission has seen him undertake challenges that would faze an able-bodied person, let alone someone with prosthetic legs. He has participated in the TARGA Tasmania classic car rally to raise funds, and has even walked the demanding Kokoda Track – a 96km trek through the jungles of Papua New Guinea. Damien walked Kokoda to remember his best friend Private Scott Palmer, who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash one week before returning home to Australia. Private Palmer’s father walked with Thomlinson to honour his son’s memory. A keen surfer prior to his injuries, Damien took up snowboarding as part of his personal challenges during rehabilitation, and in 2011 competed with four other ADF members in the US Marine Corps Paralympic Trials. In 2012 he declared his next challenge – to represent Australia as a snowboarder in the 2014 Winter Paralympics to be held in Russia. He also continues his fundraising initiatives for Legacy, the Commando Welfare Trust and other organisations aimed at raising awareness and funds for injured soldiers and their families. Damien’s triumph against adversity, his positive attitude and ambition for the future has seen him become an inspiration to many. Above all, Thomlinson’s incredible journey stands as proof that no challenge is too great and that the ANZAC spirit truly is alive and well. His next chapter continues to be written as an aspiring Paralympian. You can get in touch with Damien via http://damienthomlinson.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
