A woman abandons her city life and marriage to return to the place of her childhood, holing up in a small religious community hidden away on the stark plains of the Monaro. She does not believe in God, doesn't know what prayer is, and finds herself living this strange, reclusive life almost by accident. As she gradually adjusts to the rhythms of monastic life, she finds herself turning again and again to thoughts of her mother, whose early death she can't forget.Disquiet interrupts this secluded life with three visitations: a terrible mouse plague, the return of the skeletal remains of a sister, presumed murdered, who left the community decades before to minister to deprived women in Thailand, and a troubling visitor to the monastery pulls the narrator further back into her past.In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Charlotte Wood about how she came to choose a nameless narrator as her storyteller, why the Monaro plains hold such meaning for her, and the benefits of writing someone else's memoir.

Today we're going to take a look at one of the greatest Australian brands: Monaro. Monaro isn't just a car—it's an icon. We've all heard the story of how Holden created the Monaro as an answer to Ford's Falcon GT, but there's more to it than that. It turns out that this iconic vehicle has been around for almost 50 years and is still going strong today with over 100,000 fans who love it just as much as the day they first saw one on the road. So why do people love Monaro so much? Well, we have some theories… First, let's talk about the history of this vehicle. It was first introduced in 1966 and was designed specifically for racing enthusiasts. In fact, it won every race it entered for three years straight! In this audio we explore a story about enthusiasts and why the Monaro is such an important Australian brand and why people love it so much.

S3 E8 Snooks La Vie (Paul Wimbles) is a South Australian born blues/soul/country vocalist and harmonica player who first began to play the harmonica after finding a brand new Hohner Marine band harmonica that was underneath a former partners bed. He began to teach himself how to play whilst sitting outside in his Monaro. He first started out playing on the local scene with a punk band called The Enemy, and switched to playing the blues after his work mate Rubes suggested that he give this genre a try. The pair started out playing together at work functions and it wasn't too long before they put together their first band The Deliverymen, who were later to become The Hiptones (after a few lineup changes.) Snooks had always been a fan of Cold Chisel, and after meeting their harmonica player David Blight at a David Blight and The Flyers gig, Snooks had a few lessons with him before deciding to concentrate on the more traditional blues sound that comes from playing by using the tongue blocking technique. Snooks La Vie acquired his moniker from his friend and music/work colleague Papa Rubes which started out as just a bit of fun and stuck amongst his peers for being known as an avid fan of New Orleans musician ‘Snooks Eaglin'. As former front man of The Hiptones, Snooks has enjoyed the success of awards such as a South Australian Music Award for best blues band/act in 1997, signed to a major label SONYBMG in 2006 and an APRA nomination for best ‘blues/roots' work in 2008. Snooks also took out South Australian Blues Vocalist of the Year for three consecutive years (2008, 2009, and 2010.) The Hiptones recorded their second album "Right Now" at Joe Camilleri's studio Woodstock studios with James Black producing the album. Snooks current bands are Romaldo's Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and his new band Snooks La Vie's Blues All Star Revue. He also performs in duos with Nikko (Nick Kipridis) and Snooks, Courtney Robb and Snooks, and J J Fields (Sav Palaktsoglou) and Snooks La Vie. Music intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Today on Beyond the Green Line, Shonelle Gleeson-Willey talks with regenerative agriculturist Dr. Charles Massy. Charles became an advocate for regenerative agriculture after the infamous four-year draught of the late 70's and early 80's, when he transformed his personal approach from conventional farming to regenerative holistic management of his property on the Monaro. He has now written three books, received an OAM, and maintained a chemical-free property for decades - one that boasts native grass in an area where surrounding farms have turned to dustbowls during recent droughts. We hear all about his life-altering decision to transition to regenerative farming, the keys to his success in the process of restoring his soil, and his PhD research on some of the catalysts and destabilizing events that cause regenerative farmers begin to adopt the approach and turn their landscapes around.Shonelle and Charles discuss the crucial topic of fertilizer, and how natural alternatives to chemical herbicides and pesticides - like worm juice and compost extract - can result in better nutrition and healthier soil.Dr. Charles Massy defines regenerative agriculture succinctly by saying, “it's working with biology and not against it.” He clarifies that every farmer's biggest asset is the land, even above their animals or crops, and reminds us all that there is indeed a way to successfully utilize natural soil and graze animals in a sustainable and healthy way. He asserts that nature's self-organizing processes are far superior to our simplified, chemical-driven modern approach. By maximizing solar energy, protecting soil health, tending to the water cycle, ensuring biodiversity, and refraining from interfering nature's timing, humans can become better stewards of land while harvesting more nutritious crops.Charles explains that during the scientific revolution, humanity shifted to a “mechanical mind,” and distanced ourselves from nature. The combination of that more arrogant mindset with the invention of chemical fertilizers, big farming machinery, and motive for profit after World War II is what created the modern human ecosystem of farming in the form it exists today. But, now that we're more aware than ever of our climate and soil's vulnerable state, a swing back to regenerative agriculture would have a huge positive impact on the planet as well as human health. Charles skillfully teaches us about the biology and carbon impact of different approaches to farming, and casts vision from where we can, and must, go from here.

There is an old adage about motor racing. “Race on Sunday; Sell on Monday”. This was one of those passionate mantras that seem to motivate Holden and Ford during the glory years of the long-distance production car racing at Bathurst in the late 60s and most of the 70s. Holden kept at it for years after that more than Ford. Fred Brain is a classic example of someone who had a close association with Holden arising out of their racing at Bathurst. Fred grew up on a farm near Wagga and they did not get a television till 1969. He watched his first Bathurst race that year, won by Colin Bond and Tony Roberts in a Holden Monaro GTS 350. Subsequently he bought a genuine GTS 350 Monaro which he still has. He baught a second Monaro that he now races in the historic category. You can hear Fred reminisce about the life and times of his cars at: Some of the things Fred mentions are as follows: He took his genuine GTS350 off the road and parked it in a shed at the farm in the late 80s to restore in the near future. The restoration is going strong (if very slowly!!). He entered his racing Monaro In the East Coast classic (an attempt to get a Targa Tasmania going in NSW). I was his navigator. When we went through Oberon we were approach by a Catholic priest who was a Holden fan so he blessed the car. Lucky he wasn't a Ford fan or he would have done an exorcism. A young boy approaches the car at one stop and said how surprised he was to see the car as he ahad not seen one before. Fred noted that it was built before he was born. The young lad said “But I am 15 years old!”. The car at that stage was at least 30 years old. We also approached by a lady who was well into her middle age years, who was wearing a Monaro T-Shirt that she had had since she was a young girl. To her credit it still fitted although it was being stretched a little. She had loved Monaros from the beginning and still did to this day. A passion for the brand, especially when racing, does not however, guarantee continual sales. Fred's first regular car was a Toyota Corona and then he rally and Raced a Datsun 1600. He has owned a series of cars including a Valiant Pacer and a Ford station wagon (used as a tow car). His emotional attachment to Holden Monaros will help keep the history alive but he has little feeling for the American owned company that has decided to leave our market.
Episode 1 gives you a look into our tastes and opinions on fun and classic vehicles. Instead of the boring old, "what's your favourite car," or "what's the fastest/most expensive _______," we have picked some categories that are a bit different! The categories are:a utilitarian vehicle;an affordable classic; and old skool performance. You get to choose a car, a bike or a truck to satisfy the three choices. However, once you've used up one choice for one category you cannot reuse it for another category! Our choices may be a bit odd, but welcome to The Clutch Basket Podcast!
