Tori Hope Petersen has a story to tell - one that gets to the heart of how we find our way through trauma and self-doubt to a place of self-acceptance and purpose. As someone who grew up in the foster care system, emancipating at 18 without a forever family, Tori had to navigate a lot of uncertainty and pain. But through that journey, she's learned invaluable lessons about the power of community, the necessity of vulnerability, and the freedom that comes from embracing your own worth. In our conversation, Tori unpacks the lies she used to believe - that self-love was selfish, that she wasn't worthy. These were patterns passed down, not just in her own life, but across generations. And unraveling them required immense courage. But Tori discovered that the act of sharing her story, the good and the bad, was integral to her own healing. It was a way of breaking cycles, of finding belonging, of using her voice to speak life into others facing similar struggles. Tori's story is a testament to resilience, to the transformative power of vulnerability. This is a conversation that gets at the heart of how we overcome the lies we've internalized, how we learn to love ourselves, and how we step into the fullness of who we're called to be.Tori Hope Petersen is an author, speaker, Bible teacher, and lover of people. Since coming to faith, she has shared her testimony and life as authentically as she can to help and offer hope to others. Tori is known for her fierce advocacy work for foster care, adoption, and vulnerable children. At home she is a wife and mama who enjoys cooking with her children. With a deep value for family, community, and hospitality, Tori and her family love to make extra food for whoever might stop by.Tori's Book:Breaking the Patterns That Break YouTori's Recommendation:UncleanJoin Our Patreon for Early Access and More: PatreonSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with author Patricia Chadwick about her new book, Breaking Glass. About Patricia Chadwick: Patricia Walsh Chadwick was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1948. She received her BA in Economics from Boston University and had a thirty-year career in the investment business, culminating as a Global Partner at Invesco. Today she sits on a number of corporate boards, and she blogs on issues social, economic, and political. She also mentors middle school girls at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem. In 2016, she founded and is the CEO of Anchor Health Initiative, a health care company that serves the needs of the LGBTQ community in Connecticut. She is married and lives in Connecticut with her husband. They have a daughter and a son. About Breaking Glass: Kicked out of a cult at seventeen, Patricia Walsh Chadwick started on the bottom rung of the ladder in the world of business and worked her way to the top—breaking through the glass ceiling to become a global partner at Invesco. Patricia grew up in a religious community-turned-cult in the Boston area. At the age of seventeen, she was forced out of her home, leaving behind her entire family, and without access to higher education. From her first job as a receptionist at a brokerage firm, she clawed her way up the ladder—rung by rung—in that bastion of male chauvinism: Wall Street. By going to college at night, she achieved her degree in economics from Boston University, and from there, she headed to New York City. With a drive that earned her the moniker “Witch of Wall Street,” she rose from the ranks of research analyst to portfolio manager, where she was responsible for billions of dollars in pension and endowment assets. A turning point in her life was giving birth to twins at the age of forty-five, and she continued forward in her career, becoming a global partner at Invesco. At the turn of the millennium, she left Wall Street behind and embarked on a second career as a corporate board director. For more information about Patricia Chadwick, visit patriciachadwick.com. Do you sometimes feel like you are failing at everything? Not juggling fast enough? Not prioritizing your health? Danielle Dobson, author of Breaking the Gender Code, joined the Greatness Podcast to share the insights she gained through dozens of interviews and research on why many women have these feelings. Danielle shares that women often work "the triple shift" - paid work, domestic work, and emotional work. She encourages each of us to build our own code, not just around the gender code, but also around the class code, the race code, all the "codes" that influence our thinking. Danielle shares great advice for how we "decode" and "recode" to help us all build resiliency and avoid burn-out.
In BREAKING GLASS: Tales from the Witch of Wall Street, Patricia Walsh Chadwick continues to tell the story of her bizarre upbringing that she began in her 2019 memoir, Little Sister. In this coming-of-age follow-up, she revisits her childhood through a different lens, offering insights into how the experiences of her early life shaped her character and helped her forge her path in business and finance.,From the tender age of six through her high school years, Patricia was raised in The Center, an isolated, rural community of 100 members, including 39 children, led by Leonard Feeney, an excommunicated Jesuit priest, and managed with an iron fist by his spiritual alter ego, Catherine Clarke. Together, they created a monastic environment that demanded obedience, silence, chastity, and detachment from family, achieved by separating parents from their children and forbidding members to read newspapers, watch television, listen to the radio, or communicate with outsiders. Patricia defied Sister Catherine's mission to mold her into a compliant, submissive nun. At 17, in the middle of the turbulent 1960s, she was expelled from her home in Still River, Massachusetts, without a hint of how to survive, much less thrive, in an unfamiliar and frightening world. Yet thrive she did. In 1966, Patricia began her new life in secretarial school, where she excelled at typing and shorthand but struggled to navigate social cues and casual conversation. She set her sights on building a career in finance, a hard-charging field ruled by men. From her first job as a receptionist at a Boston brokerage firm, to research analyst with a Philadelphia-based firm, to Wall Street as a portfolio manager, responsible for billions of dollars in assets.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

We are back from our little break with an absolute bang and a guest I've wanted to chat with for such a long time. Thank you so much for your patience while we adventured around the world, by the way – I hope you enjoyed our re-releases and I know you'll enjoy this week's guest even more. I'm talking of course about the woman, the legend, Toni Lodge, who you have probably heard from on her own amazing show, The Toni and Ryan Podcast, one of Australia's top performing shows and for very good reason. Toni has also just released her first book, I Don't Need Therapy (and other lies I've told myself), for which I was so honoured to give a cover quote after absolutely eating up my advance copy – I can't recommend it highly enough and the link to buy is below for you all. I won't reveal too much because we cover SO much in this chat and I adored getting to know this amazing woman better. Toni is one of those amazing examples of someone who you could easily think was born into the position she's in now (because she is just so perfectly suited to it), but for whom this definitely wasn't the case and I loved exploring all the juicy stuff in between. You'll be able to tell immediately how much fun we had during this one, I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time – I hope it's as much of a joy to your ears as it was to mine the first time around! Slam the Gavel welcomes Lorraine Nilon, book author of "Breaking Free From the Chains of Silence," A Respectful Exploration into the Ramifications of Abuse Hidden Behind Closed Doors. Lorraine is a spiritual tour guide/life coach, with over20 years experience researching and navigating what impedes our soul maturity and emotional growth. Teaching others about the importance of being self-reflective and to value their uniqueness, Lorraine is an advocate for feet-on-the-ground spirituality, meaning absolutely no by-passing a client's emotional baggage. Lorraine has a realistic and engaging way of explaining how to explore life and develop healthy self-awareness. In her book Lorraine explains childhood trauma in adults, now so prevalent, it has become a silent epidemic and the lasting scars are more than difficult to heal. "Breaking Free," is such an important book that contains valuable insights into the thought processes and emotional impact that the abused deal with on a daily basis for the rest of their lives. "Abuse is never contained to a present moment, it lingers across a person's lifetime and has pervasive long-term ramifications," Lorraine states. There are long term effects such as confusion, shame and people pleasing which is a constant emotional battle. We discussed how silencing the victim is the pedophile's manipulation tool and how Soul Abuse destroys the victim's awareness of the strength of their own soul and causes the victim to be aware of. I was so intrigued by the cover and premise of Sasha Alsberg's Breaking Time that I bought it right when it came out. This YA novel is set in Scotland where the final Pillar of Time (i.e., time traveler) and her protector from the past battle evil and maybe fall in love. I lament the disappointment of not enjoying this book, take the great premise and rewrite the story to make it more interesting, and question Klara's anti-college views considering she wants to be an astronomer.

Perhaps one of greatest hurdles folks have in embarking on the 12-Step program of recovery or the compatible Minnesota Model of addiction treatment is the concept of adopting a Higher Power that can aid in our Recovery. Those of you Way Out faithful that have listened to this podcast for a hot minute know that prior to entering recovery I had deep seeded resentment, skepticism, and an unhealthy dose of ambivalence on the idea of God, especially one that could help me in any meaningful way. Andrew's work in his new book centers squarely on this barrier that I and many others have faced in a particularly practical manner in that it focuses on what the problem is, which is the maladaptive thought and behavior patterns that make up addiction and precisely how spirituality both functionally works and can be of enormous value to our recovery journey. His work passes the proverbial smell test in that what he lays out in the book aligns with my own collective spiritual experiences and journey to this point. The HOW of Recovery, Honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness are essential in an effort to embark upon an individual spiritual journey and to develop a relationship with a Higher Power that can really work for you no matter where you are at with regard to your current attitudes and beliefs with respect to all things spiritual. Andrew's work amounts to a field guide that can help us understand the nature of addiction, the process of recovery, and how even the deepest spiritual skeptic can develop a sense of practical spirituality that can make a real difference in our lives. What we're ultimately working to achieve is first authentic connection to our true selves, then authentic and rewarding connection to others and ultimately an authentic and meaningful connection to a Power Greater than Ourselves and to that end Andrew's book is an essential contribution to that goal and the interview that is about to unfold before your ready and willing ears will most certainly make a compelling case for resolving your own spiritual skepticism so listen up. Their mission is to help transition the mainstream to eating more plant-based foods in a friendly, accepting, and engaging venue. They have spent the last 20 years in Vancouver, owning and operating a total of 8 restaurants and organic grocery stores throughout the city. Jason is also founded Vegan Supply and their newest project Friend & Faux. Jason's vision for the world: a thriving vegan lifestyle and interacting differently with the world, to be part of the solution. At age 25, Jason was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. The GI Doctors told him he would have it for life and that his food choices didn't matter. But this didn't resonate with him as he knew remission was possible. After reading Dr. Gottschall's book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, he changed his diet and got results. This started Jason on a healing path that took many twists and turns which led him to being one of Canada's most ambitious and ground-breaking Vegan entrepreneurs. On today's podcast, Jason shares just how powerful the human body is in repairing and rebuilding itself. He teaches you how to reframe your relationship with food and how eating is truly a spiritual practice. Jason also raises the important differences between a plant-based and vegan lifestyle and how to support and grow small local vegan communities for the betterment of all. Alex Marlow, Editor-in-Chief for Breitbart News, joins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss his newly released book, Breaking the News: Exposing the Establishment Media's Hidden Deals and Secret Corruption. In the new book, Marlow explains how the establishment press destroyed its own credibility with a relentless stream of “fake news” designed to smear Donald Trump and his supporters while advancing a leftist agenda. Giordano asks Marlow about a nugget from the book that really stood out to him, that being information on a ‘new Soros,' Laurene Powell Jobs, who has a big hand in controlling media rhetoric. Marlow tells that Jobs, wife of late Apple head Steve Jobs, has very cleverly come up with a way to fund the press, funding ‘activist press' which Marlow further explains, and by purchasing media properties such as The Atlantic and Axios. Also, Marlow discusses the relationship between media corporations and China, discussing comments made by wrestler and actor John Cena, who apologized in Mandarin for calling Taiwan a country. We speak frequently of an organization’s purpose, but purpose is also relevant to an industry. Judo Bank Co-Founder and Co-CEO Joseph Healy argues in his latest book, Breaking the Banks, that the global banking industry has lost it’s purpose. Joseph joined the Greatest podcast to reflect upon why banking is one of the least trusted industries globally, discussing the systemic and cultural challenges faced. His perspective is relevant regardless of your industry. We as leaders need to keep in mind that our organization, our industry, serves a purpose in society, just as banking serves the economy by “pumping blood around the body, the economy”.

Not long ago my friend Linda mentioned the book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself” by Dr. Joe Dispnenza. In his book, he talks about wanting to create a new life, but we’re stuck in a rut of the same routines from the time we wake up in the morning until we go to bed. How can we expect something new to evolve out of routine or constant repetition? That's when I started to ponder my life and I realized…I really did change EVERYTHING!! Recently I’ve noticed we keep using the phrase “new normal” when talking about the new rules for our current situation. I’ve also noticed this phrase is often followed with a comment similar to this: “I can’t wait until this is over and we can get back to normal.” It got me thinking about how I’ve personally made multiple major transformations in my own life to create my “new normal”. In this episode, I’ll tell some stories of how I did it and share a few ideas that could help you find your “new normal”…if you’d like to give them a try. House of FI, it’s time to get back to the basics of money management. The first month of 2019 is behind us. We’ve set our personal and financial goals but the newness of the New Year has worn off, and now it’s time to renew our commitment to the changes we know will inspire huge wins for our families. This is the reason we spoke to Dan Shaw in the previous episode, and it’s why we are speaking to Tess Wicks in this episode. Tess Wicks is a personal finance coach and educator who breaks down the journey to financial independence into key action steps and makes the connection between our priorities, the things we acquire, and our life vision. Tess has a vibrant online community, and she is also the host of the Wander Wealthy Podcast. Tess aims to empower her clients to get smart about their money while still being able to spend it on the things that bring them joy. In this episode, we touch on her money story, her views on the cost of education, entrepreneurship and the concept of the Anti-Budget. Money Story Who we are and why we end up doing the things we do as adults can often be traced back to early memories and experiences we had along the way. Tess Wicks is no different. Tess grew up with parents that owned a very successful business. She was the fourth child, and because of her place in the birthline, Tess had the unique experience of growing up on the other side of their initial business struggles. Before she was born, they lived in a tiny house in another part of town. By the time she came around, they’d seen business success, they achieved a more stable money position and they lived in a nicer home. What we loved the most about Tess’ experience of their increased financial stability was that her parents often drove back to the smaller home and revisited the way things were along the path to their success. Sometimes, in order to teach your kids where you are headed, you have to show them where you have been. Charting Her Own Path! Originally Tess was less than thrilled about following in the business ownership footsteps of her parents. At first, she planned to be a forensic pathologist. However, when college was all said and done, Tess actually excelled in the area of Actuarial Science. While working as a pension consultant - valuing the pension plans of various agencies - it became clear to her that her time in actuarial work was limited. She needed something more and began to imagine a different future for herself. She found a creative outlet in podcasting. The corporate structure was repetitive, so while completing all of her data-driven work, Tess began listening to personal development podcasts. At the time, the podcasts were all male owned, and because of that, there were very few female guests for their interviews. So, Tess and a friend, in an effort to elevate the female voice started their own podcast together. Today Tess owns the Wander Wealthy company, where she helps young people take control of their money, and grow their investments. Tess On The Cost Of College College costs are front of mind for many parents. The subject of how to avoid college costs, and also whether Tess felt college was helpful now that she is an entrepreneur came up. In the end, Tess was pretty torn about whether college (all costs included) is actually worth the money. Reasons Why Tess is Torn on The Need to Pursue College: The rising cost of college is crushing its participants. Parents and families don’t always understand the implications of chasing the higher education dream. Most people are going to get a higher salary by attending school, but sometimes it doesn’t happen this way. To determine the need for college, Tess suggests that families sit down and map out their goals. After writing down everything you want to achieve through college, break down the math to see how much the goal is really going to cost you. First Steps of Financial Stability List your goals - this ties your starting place to your ending place. Emergency savings fund - Starting with a foundation of an emergency fund help ward off budget problems later. Create your strategy next - for this you may need help, but the key is to create a strategy that fits your personal experience Live a little - it is important to give yourself some buffer to breathe and live. If you can't reward yourself for doing such good financial planning, what are you doing it for? Tess has an awesome new course called the Invested Plan, where she teaches you how to save and invest for the future - something that can be so daunting for many of us. Tess on the Final Questions: Money Lesson : Work with people and hire professionals that can make your life easier. Tess' parents had very smart people on their team that they were able to invest in. This pays off early and easily. Life Hack: Pursuing a more minimal lifestyle with additional spending on the items that positively affect her lifestyle. It’s good to be frugal and save money, but have an area of your life that you are able to spend in. Be very specific about what you allow into your life and spend a little more for good quality items. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Chapter 8 and 9, Runaways and Maroons; Revolts in the Age of Revolution, Breaking The Chains by William L. Katz "will force many readers to reexamine their assumptions about American history… Young readers will be fascinated and better informed for having experienced this book,” wrote School Library Journal. Striking photographs highlight this unknown heritage.” — Black Child Magazine, February/March 1997 The story of Maroon communities in the Americas is one of the most important and fascinating chapters in the history of New World societies. However, it is a story that is not well known. Scholarly research and forensic archaeology are increasingly uncovering the evidence of Maroon settlements that have been a part of the US from the 1600s until the 1900s, but were hidden in plain view. Not only is little known about Maroon encampments established throughout the southern US, but our history books include little trace of the agency of Africans, who were forcibly brought to the US and enslaved, but employed military and diplomatic strategies in international relations, represented Native nations in negotiations with the US government, launched cottage industries, and built lasting communities long before the end of the Civil War. Over Two hundred years ago, while the elite in New Orleans were making their usual preparations for Mardi Gras. Plantation owners were planning all-night parties, and the women of the house were looking forward to elaborate masquerades and balls. What they didn't know is while they were planning for their annual carnival festivities, their slaves were planning a little something of their own. On one fateful night, 500 armed slaves rose up from the plantations and set out to conquer the city.
Join The Gist of Freedom as we listen to Chapter 6, Music for Jesus Lyrics of Freedom and a lively discussion with Pan-Africanist Dr. Sidney and Pianki. Evangelical preaching had caused some whites to question the justness of slavery, but still more were all the more careful to censor what messages from the Bible slaves could hear. Born in 1800, Nat Turner was identified as a bright youth who developed a zeal for Scripture, though this did not prevent his masters from employing him merely as a common field hand. Turner also became a preacher to slaves from surrounding plantations and farms, preaching against slavery to his brethren but carefully keeping up the appearance of the respectful, dutiful slave to whites. Turner’s spirituality and reputation took on a mystical quality as an adult, and during this time he secretly began dreaming of revolution, believing God had specially chosen him to smite the institution of slavery. Because previous conspiracies had been discovered when members had informed on them, Turner developed his plans for revolt only among four trusted followers. He and his confederates struck on August 21, 1831, slaughtering white men, women, and children using axes and other ad hoc weapons. "I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I'm a human being first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever and whaatever benefits humanity as a whole." Malcolm X
The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Chapter 6, Music for Jesus Lyrics of Freedom; Chapter 7 Flight and Revolt, Runaways and Maroons Michael Row the Boat Ashore "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" is an African-american spiritual. It was first noted during the American Civil War at St. Helena Island, one of the Sea Islands of South Carolina, USA. The song was sung by former slaves whose owners had abandoned the island before the Union navy arrived to enforce a blockade. Charles Pickard Ware, an abolitionist and Harvard graduate who had come to supervise the plantations on St. Helena Island wrote the song down in music notation as he heard the freedmen sing. The lyric describes the simple crossing of the River Jordan with macabre undertones provided by reference to trumpets, eternal life and unknown lands. Despite its deathly connotations the song is affirming, a celebration of faith under oppression. ------ “This book will force many readers to reexamine their assumptions about American history… Young readers will be fascinated and better informed for having experienced this book,” wrote School Library Journal.
