Eppure, i censori passano mentre il vecchio Giovannino, i suoi personaggi (soprattutto Don Camillo e Peppone) e i suoi lettori, restano. Riuscirà a salvarsi? Ascolta e scoprilo. Storie tradizionali, favole e fiabe, leggende popolari. Hi-ho the me-ri-o! Courtney and Emily have no strings to hold them down as they celebrate the 85th anniversary of Walt Disney Animation's second motion picture, Pinocchio, by comparing the film to Carlo Collodi's original novel, “The Adventures of Pinocchio: Story of a Puppet.” Collodi's episodic adventure takes readers to the puppet show, the not so wondrous meadows, Playland, the bottom of sea…pretty much everywhere that is not school as Pinocchio learns to accept the consequences of his actions and tries to become a real boy. Courtney and Emily are all in this together for this nostalgic discussion of Disney Channel and Ashley Spencer's book, “Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel's Tween Empire.” The Disney Channel was falling behind in children's programming in the 1990s until they discovered the tween market and launch millennial defining television programs such as Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, the Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Camp Rock, and Wizards of Waverly Place. But while tweens were eagerly consuming media, music, and merchandise, a lot was happening behind the scenes. High school is a formative time in an adolescent's life and 2000-2012 were Disney Channel's high school years as the network and its stars tried to find their identity. In Italy 1881 kids were by turns delighted and terrified by Pinocchio, a serialised story by Carlo Collodi, of the adventures of a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy. The 1940 Disney animated film adaptation is wonderful. The original literary work remains a brilliant, darker, exploration of what it means to become a good person.

Set in Fascist Italy, the characters are voiced by Gregory Mann as Pinocchio and David Bradley as Geppetto, alongside Ewan McGregor, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christopher Waltz and Tilda Swinton.

If you've seen the Disney adaptation of Pinocchio, you might think it's one of the darker, scarier films Disney have made. But did you know the original tale written by Carlo Collodi is even more terrifying? We're talking abuse, starvation, death... yeah, it's a fun ride (and written for children!!). In this episode, Charlotte tells the original dark tale of Pinocchio, some of the possible inspiration behind it in Collodi's real life, and some of the adaptations that have been made since, from dark to downright bizarre. --- Where to Find Us: Head to our website, learnaboutpod.com, to read the full episode notes and see a list of links and resources used to research this episode. Tonight, we'll read the opening to “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Italian writer Carlo Collodi, published in 1883. This episode originally aired in May of 2021. Pinocchio was carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto as a wooden puppet but he dreams of becoming a real boy. He is notably characterized for his frequent tendency to lie, which causes his nose to grow. Pinocchio is a cultural icon. He is one of the most re-imagined characters in children's literature. His story has been adapted into many other media, notably the 1940 Disney film Pinocchio. Collodi often used the Italian Tuscan dialect in his book. For example, the name of Pinocchio's father, Gepetto, comes from the diminutive for Geppo, the Tuscan pronunciation of ceppo, meaning a log, stump or block. — read by V — Support us: Listen ad-free on Patreon Get Snoozecast merch like cozy sweatshirts and accessories

Pinkie tells her version of The Classic "Pinocchio"
Today we will be discussing the Risorgimento, the best and worst ideologies in Italy, Pinocchio as a metaphor for Italian unification, and of course, pizza. The Risorgimento was a period of political and social upheaval in Italy that lasted from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The movement aimed to unite the various states and regions of Italy into one unified nation. This period saw the rise of many notable figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo di Cavour, who played a crucial role in the unification of Italy. When it comes to ideologies in Italy, there have been both positive and negative influences on the country's history. On the positive side, the liberal and democratic ideals that emerged during the Risorgimento have had a lasting impact on Italian society and politics. On the negative side, the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini in the early 20th century had a devastating impact on the country and its people. Pinocchio, the beloved children's story written by Carlo Collodi, can also be seen as a metaphor for the Italian unification. The character's journey from a wooden puppet to a real boy can be seen as a metaphor for the transformation of Italy from a collection of separate states to a unified nation. And last but not least, let's talk about pizza. Italy's most famous export, pizza is a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions. Whether you're a fan of traditional Margherita or a more unconventional topping, there's a pizza for everyone. #Risorgimento #ItalianUnification #Pinocchio #Pizza #ItalianCulture Today's Guest: Joseph Pascone, Host of Turning Tides Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/turning-tides/id1653316649 You can learn more about the History of Papacy and subscribe at all these great places: http://atozhistorypage.com/ https://www.historyofthepapacypodcast.com email: steve@atozhistorypage.com https://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacy parthenonpodcast.com https://www.gettr.com/user/atozhistory Beyond the Big Screen: Beyondthebigscreen.com The History of the Papacy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DO2leym3kizBHW0ZWl-nA Get Your History of the Papacy Podcast Products Here: https://www.atozhistorypage.com/products Help out the show by ordering these books from Amazon! https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1MUPNYEU65NTF Music Provided by: "Sonatina in C Minor" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Funeral March for Brass" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "String Impromptu Number 1" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Intended Force" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Agnus Dei X - Bitter Suite Kevin MacLeaod (incomptech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Begin Transcript:
We wrap up the ridiculously child-inappropriate children's story of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Host Rachel says it best when she sums it up thusly: sometimes barely anything happens, and sometimes way too much happens. Ain't that just the way? If you, like Bekah, enjoy cruelty towards puppets, you'll enjoy this episode. Rachel is pretty sure some puppets are gay. Bekah is open to ghosts. Jackie begs Rachel to become a donkey for her, just this once. Topics include: Ethiopian proverbs, grapes in wife form, the Island of Invisible Disabilities, a dog that may be alive or dead, Reagan Republicans, a philosophical tuna, Statler and Waldorf, ghost opinions, Pinocchio the atheist, unbelievably polite dolphins, the late great Jim Henson, eating a ton of salt, Ti Voglio Bene Assai (a song so catchy it will ruin your life), the Japanese reality TV show Old Enough, ichthyology, the very serious and never funny phrase 'Mamma Mia!', and how much fun would be worth it to be transfigured into a donkey. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 11, 2022 is: imbue im-BYOO verb Imbue can be used as a synonym for endow (“to provide with something freely or naturally”) and can also mean “to permeate or influence” in a way that suggests colored dye permeating cloth fabric. // The children were imbued with a passion for nature by their parents, both biologists. See the entry > Examples: “A radical political commentator who turned to children's literature late in life, [Carlo] Collodi wrote a complex, unsettling novel—miles away from the morality tale that Pinocchio's story has become. Collodi's is a multilayered work of fiction that, although primarily aimed at young readers, is imbued with social criticism and pessimistic humor, and can be read, among other things, as an irreverent attack on established authority.” — Anna Momigliano, The Atlantic, 12 Sept. 2022 Did you know? Like its synonym infuse, imbue implies the introduction of one thing into another so as to affect it throughout. Someone's voice can be imbued with pride, for example, or a photograph might be imbued with a sense of melancholy. In the past imbue has also been used synonymously with imbrue, an obscure word meaning “to drench or stain,” but the two words are likely unrelated. Imbue comes from the Latin verb imbuere, meaning “to dye, wet, or moisten.” Imbrue has been traced back through Anglo-French and Old French to the Latin verb bibere, meaning “to drink.”
