Every dream of parenthood is unique, and for some, the road to family is laden with unexpected twists, triumphs, and trials. Jessica Satterfield gracefully steps into our space, sharing her profound journey of motherhood—a story that encompasses the poignant complexities of infertility, loss, and the beautiful mosaic of adoption. From her childhood yearnings to the deepening of her faith, Jessica unravels the challenges she and her husband, Brandon, faced as they navigated through the heartbreak of infertility treatments and the shadows of personal hardship, only to find joy and hope in the most unforeseen places.Witness the resilience of a family molded by both agony and miracles, as Jessica recounts the unimaginable sorrow of losing a vibrant son and the strength they gained in the wake of such loss. The raw emotion of their story is interwoven with the delicate threads of healing, as they embraced the gifts of life anew—overcoming infertility with a successful IVF, followed by a surprise natural pregnancy. Jessica's narrative stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who, even in their darkest moments, cling to hope and the promise of new beginnings. The fabric of family is rich and varied, and Jessica's tapestry includes the vibrant colors of adoption alongside the innate challenges of blending biological and adopted children. Her candid reflections on the adoption process, parental wisdom, and the ever-evolving journey of faith shed light on the sanctity of connecting with each child's heart. Her insights into the day-to-day triumphs and trials of parenting—illness in a large family, nighttime wakefulness, and the search for grace amidst the chaos—are universal. Jessica's story, shared here, is an invitation to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit and the profound joy that can emerge from the most unexpected chapters of life.----Jessica has been wrecked by the love of a beautiful Father. She has known the intimacy of Papa God in the midst of the heartbreak of abuse, infertility, and child loss. Because she's known Him in the fellowship of His sufferings, she's also known Him in the power of His resurrection. She writes on her popular blog, Grace While We Wait, and is the author of, Partnering With Heaven, her first book. She is the President and Founder of a ministry called The Garden, which connects women on the broken road to motherhood to the Healer. Wife to her life-crush, Brandon, and mama to five (one who now lives with Jesus) through the miracle of adoption and miracles in her womb. Her days aren't busy, but rather, full, the very best kind. You can find her curled up on the couch with good coffee and her family or speaking to groups of women all over the country. Both are amazing, but home is where her heart is. Susan, your host, welcomes Catherine McNulty to today's episode, this time not as a guest but as a coach specializing in grief. In this episode, Susan and Catherine answer listeners' questions on grief as fellow grievers and share their insights and tips on navigating particular aspects of the grief journey. Key Takeaways: Testimony: Losing a 16-year-old daughter to suicide and dealing with people's questions can be retraumatizing. Her mother finds herself avoiding talking about her daughter to prevent these saddening and disruptive questions. Feedback: - Guilt and shame are triggered by these comments, making the grieving process much harder. Sometimes people ask questions just to feel it won't happen to them. - Speak your truth! There is nothing impolite about educating people about what hurts you, setting boundaries, and guarding them. - You can always walk away from an uncomfortable conversation, and protect your energy. - Show the world who your daughter really was, and be inspired by your grief to honor the person you love! - Find your community and connect with more people. Testimony: A widow who has lost her husband to cancer is having problems communicating with his family that, while he was alive were disengaged, but as soon he received the diagnosis, got close and overly involved, disrupting the time between her and her husband. Now that he has passed, they want his things, that his widow wants for their children, who were always there for their father, in health and in sickness. She wishes to maintain the relationship because these are his children's grandparents. Feedback: - Do not feel bad for the way you feel! You are angry and resentful, you are entitled; it is your husband and the father of your children who passed away, don't give away anything that is going to hurt your heart. - Release your anger and resentment to them as a gift of love to yourself (not to them). - Set boundaries, grieve on your terms, following your timing; this is your story and no one can tell you what or how to be and do you! - It is OK to be distant from the parents of your husband, you can allow them to be part of the children's lives (depending on their age) without having to be involved in situations that are not good for you (it is also an opportunity to model healthy boundary setting to your children.) - Do what feels good to you! Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com Meet Catherine McNulty After losing her infant son in 2011, Catherine embarked on a journey to do more than survive grief. The loss forever changed the trajectory of her life and sent her looking for meaning and purpose in the life she was given. She channeled the love for her son into her own healing, self-growth, and personal empowerment. Today, she has created a framework for grief that disrupts conventional ways of looking at loss. She challenges her clients to step outside of a victim mindset and regain control of how they navigate grief. She teaches how to grow through grief and encourages speaking openly about grief to break down the walls of silence around grief. Catherine lives in San Diego with her family where she speaks, writes, and offers coaching to those who want to do more than just survive grief. She is a board member of Empty Cradle and volunteers at Miracle Babies and the Ronald McDonald House. Her business, Grief INSPIRED supports those who are grieving and guides them to create a new normal that honors the ones they've lost. Visit Open to Hope Visit Grief Inspired on YouTube

Deze eerste bonusaflevering is in het Engels. Muziek door Joris Vanvinckenroye, componist en contrabassist, zeker te ontdekken bij Basta, Flairck of Troissoeur. Opname en productie door Lieven Bauwens Lieven Bauwens, president of Child-Help Belgium, and Chris Gates, founder and CEO of Mainsprings, discuss the collaboration between Child-Help and Mainsprings in Kitongo, Tanzania. Serving a marginalised target group leads to a holistic approach following permaculture principles. Mainsprings believes no child should have to grow up in extreme poverty. That's why we take a holistic approach to change in East Africa by providing refuge for abused and abandoned girls, quality primary and secondary education, access to rural healthcare, and economic opportunity through permaculture. Child-Help vzw wants to improve the quality of live of children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in developing countries by early detection and holistic care so they can grow up as equal. To that purpose, Child-Help collaborates with partners in the South and build on the capacities and initiatives of parents and local health care workers. The recommendations mentioned in the conversation are a lecture by Gabe Brown, Mark Shepard's books: Restoration Agriculture and Water for any Farm, the documentaries Kiss the Ground and Uganda's Miracle Babies.
Did you know that historic Coney Island was once home to a sideshow exhibit of premature infants in life-saving incubators? Ever hear of the Dionne quintuplets, who were conceived and born against all odds before fertility treatments were a thing? The survival of these little ones is nothing short of a miracle, and also a pretty entertaining (and in one case, sad) story. Join Tessa as she ventures solo into the past and tells you all about Dr. Martin Couney and his sideshow babies, and the Dionne Quintuplets.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/historybyidiots)

Many people are being impacted adversely during the Covid-19 Pandemic and lock down restrictions. With Mother's Day tomorrow and Tourette's Syndrome Awareness Week from 4th - 10th May 2020, Áine Ní Tighearnaigh speaks with Melinda Cruz of Miracle Babies about the issues being faced by Mum's and Dad's with premature babies during the Covid-19 pandemic. Miracle Babies Foundation was initiated and co-founded by Melinda Cruz in 2005. Melinda's drive and passion comes from a very personal position. As the mother of three boys all born premature, Melinda knows firsthand the long term challenges and trauma having a baby in specialised care can bring. Her first son, Elijah, was born at 34 weeks, spending 21/2 weeks in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Her second son Dillon was born at 27 weeks and resuscitated at birth. He spent nine weeks in hospital before being allowed to go home. Her third son, Jasper, born at 37 weeks also spent time in NICU. Having had her three babies cared for by the NICU, Melinda wanted to remain linked to other mothers of premature babies. She also wanted to give back to the NICU and thank the wonderful staff she credits for saving her babies’ lives. It was from those experiences that the Miracle Babies Foundation was born, and has since helped and supported thousands of families.Melinda is now a trusted expert and educator to medical professionals and a sought-after public speaker. She is the first parent in Australia to be invited as an Associate Investigator on Neonatal Studies and Trials and presented at the Vermont Oxford Network Annual Meeting and Quality Congress, Chicago in October 2012.

Infertility affects about 6.1 million women in the united states alone, according to the CDC. And since April is infertility and infant loss awareness month, I asked one of my very best friends Kendyl Madsen, who knows the struggle of infertility better than almost anyone else I know, to share her story of getting her two babies here after hundreds of shots, tests and three full rounds of IVF. Kendyl was gracious enough to share her entire journey of ups and downs with getting pregnant and losing pregnancies, what they tried, how it felt, and most importantly, what helped her most from friends and loved ones who supported her through these trials. I'm confident that Kendyl's story will provide a lot of hope for other couples hoping to get pregnant, and more understanding and compassion for those who have loved ones who struggle with infertility or infant loss and how we can best support them. Last week, in a moment of unique candor that had millions of TV viewers reacting in amazement, FOX Sports announcer Gus Johnson shared the personal history about Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins during the Ohio State vs. Michigan game.“J.K. Dobbins’ mom Mya became pregnant when she was 18 years old,” Johnson said. “She went to the doctor because she was thinking about aborting the baby but changed her mind.”The story went viral. Watch the video HERE: https://bit.ly/388muakJ.K. Dobbins’ mom has referred to him as a “miracle baby.” Clearly the story is a testimony of a mother who did the hard thing and chose life. But as talented as JK Dobbins is, he is not more valuable than any other human created in the image of God. All humans are made in God’s image and deserve respect simply because of what they are. That also goes for the aborted unborn who are routinely butchered by the thousands in America’s abortion mills each day and incinerated like common garbage. What about them? They won’t get the opportunity to celebrate a birthday or play football. They are abandoned.Mark spells out the desperate state of the vulnerable unborn and shares a story of one of sidewalk counselor who pleaded with the truck driver of a medical waste company to allow us to provide the aborted children a humane burial.Abortionist Renee Chelian said, “We are one incinerator–one incinerator company–away from being closed.” This is the weak link of the abortion industry and we need to put pressure on all who enable abortion. Call Victor Anderson at Specific Waste Industries at 502-425-2770 and demand that they stop picking up the bodies for Planned Parenthood. You can watch The Mark Harrington Show on Mark’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. Learn about becoming an everyday hero, being a better parent, living every day as a miracle baby AND with Tourette's syndrome, and more!! Brian Schulman of Voice Your Vibe comes on the show and gets real as he describes to us the crazy things he went through growing up as he went through wild experiences - and emerged as a person who is always spinning things positive. Brian works to inspire people and his children every day! Show Highlights 02:20 - [Ari] How do you go about inspiring one person each day? 03:08 - [Brian] I wanted to give out the opposite of the negative that I had received by those around me. Don’t get me wrong. I mean I certainly had a ton of positivity around me but sometimes, we all know how one negativity can overshadow a thousand positives. 03:25 - [Brian] So I wanted to be a giver of good and positivity, and light, and strength, and encouragement. And I know life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. 03:42 - [Brian] I know I've failed way more in life and in business than I've succeeded, that I've learned from every step, and I've gotten up every time. I've dusted myself off and I'd get going and that’s why I've succeeded no matter what the outcome is. 04:18 - [Brian] My ”why” is to inspire one person a day and that can be in so many different ways. If I can inspire one person to chase after their dreams and no one feel and believe that they can accomplish anything (continue to say more here…) 05:00 - [Brian] You know the reality is, life has and will, and continue to throw me mad curveballs and I will continue to get up to the plate and keep swinging. 12:27 - [Brian reading his daughter's essay] This story about to be told is about an extraordinary man now 42 years young, who accepted all the obstacles life had to throw at him. I know you may be thinking that everyone has different obstacles they just overcome throughout their lifetime so how is he different from you and I? 12:45 - [Brian reading his daughter's essay] What makes this particular man different from you and I is the tactic he used when faced with these obstacles. What makes him different from you and I is that he took these obstacles and used them to help make a difference and inspire others to never let life get in the way of their greatness and achievements. What makes us different from everyone else is not the obstacles life throws at us but what we do when faced with these obstacles. 13:14 - [Brian reading his daughter's essay] Will you choose to accept defeat? Or will you choose to persevere? 14:57 - [Brian reading his daughter's essay] No one knows what life has in store for them. All we can do is live until we are forced to face an obstacle and we must make a choice to either overcome or accept defeat. 15:13 [Brian reading his daughter's essay] One person can make a difference in the lives of others. But the experiences this boy has to face came a life lesson. with determination, perseverance, and support from others, anything can happen. 15:50 [Brian reading his daughter's essay] He helps lift peoples spirits and hopes in times of hopelessness and despair, He helps people turn their ideas and dreams into realities, he helps build people from the ground up and hopes that they too will one day share their stories with others, he makes the difference in this world each and every day which inspires others to make a difference as well. 16:13 [Brian reading his daughter's essay] Who may you ask is this man? Well, he is my father. Out of all the lives he's made a difference, I believe he has made the biggest difference in mine. He inspires me to never give up on what I believe in, He always told me to do what makes me happy. But most importantly to always live every day as if it were the last because we are never guaranteed a tomorrow. 16: 52 [Brian reading his daughter's essay] Be the change you wish to see in the world making a difference in the lives of others. 19:24 [Brian] "They're all here for me, they know who I am, I don't need it." 20: 47 [Brian] Tourettes, by the way, is more common on boys versus girls and usually between 16 and 18 years. 24:18 [Brian] My legacy are my kids, my legacy is every person that I have, the ability whose hearts I have devoted or touched in some way. 24:38 [Ari] If all were able to touch us, the people around us but not our own kids and our own family, aren't we may be doing something wrong? Shouldn't we be focused on family first? I don't mean the only family but if we're gonna be inspiring people, our kids come first. Why should we let somebody else be the inspiration for our kids? 25:14 [Brian] We could talk about this all day, I always wanted to be a daddy. It was no question in my mind. I love kids, I wanted to be mine, mom and dad form. Like she was so inspiring to me. 28:20 [Ari] The typical definition of success from most people is money, great job, doctor. All these things, the people just internally, without thinking about it and that's the pinnacle of success. 28:40 [Ari] The truth is if I could get to the end of my life, look back and be able to say that I'm a good dad. That would be successful. 29:00 [Brian] That's not that, at the end of the day when we're taking our last breath, that's not what matters. What matters is the impact we make in my opinion. The impact we make on people's lives. 29:32 [Brian] They're better human beings. If their hearts are bigger, they are kinder. 30:16 [Brian] "You can't turn the clock back." 32:32 [Ari] From most parents or at least for all good parents the choice is to never accept defeat. The choice is always what do I have to do to overcome or make a passes, it doesn't matter what it is, I'll make it work. 33:13 [Brian] When we become parents, it's not about us anymore, like literally it's like snap and everything changes for the good. 34:21 [Brian] We have genuine heroes around us every single day, people that take a selfless action and make a dramatic impact on somebody's life. It happens every single day, every single moment. 34:56 [Brian] I remember thinking to myself, I don't ever want anyone to feel the way I feel, I don't want anyone to ever be treated the way I've been treated. I don't want them to feel that way or feel like they are being treated that way when they're around me. 39:32 [Brian] So I just said: "well, I'll just tell my story." 41:40 [Brian] I'm inspiring people by sharing it and it's not that they have got to have gone through what I've gone through, we all go through trials and tribulations in our life. We all get beat down, it's about getting back up and I didn't think I had a voice for a story that matter, I just looked at it as life. 44:20 [Brian] This is the most important part for anyone "It's not about you, it's about sharing your experiences that can help at least one person out there" and if you think of it that way, it changes your mindset completely. 45:13 [Ari] Sometimes when we're so down when we've got so much stuff that's happening to us that are creating such havoc in our lives or such negativity or potential negativity or whatever it is and we're just all the way down there. Legitimately the one thing that helps us more than anything else is another person reaching down with their hand to lift us up. 45:40 [Brian] Yes, that's what it is about, it's about community, it's about people coming together, it's about knowing that we all go through different things in our lives and we can do that. 47:16 [Ari] Every single time you get up, and people don't realize this and this is part of the issue, and every time you get up, you're stronger. And every single time you stand up you're that much more able to withstand whatever else life throws at you in the future and whatever else it comes. "I had that moment 2 years ago when I had that really big issue but I can do it I can get passes and I know I can!" 47:41 [Brian] Great ways to remember that? Pull out your phone when you're on your worst moment that you feel you're having in your life and hit record and talk to yourself. Am I stuck in grief? This was the question Catherine McNulty asked herself when someone told her she was. It had been 2 years since her infant son died yet sadness and depression were her constant companions. Grief had become her new normal. Normally, I don't walk around thinking about grief. In fact, I honestly try to avoid it. But within the last two weeks, at least three people I know have buried a parent. And within the last couple of years, I've gone to more funerals than I've ever wanted to. Though my conversation with Catherine was taped some time ago, it could not be more timely. Catherine McNulty is a Grief Coach, something that she so desperately needed when she found herself in the throes of grief. She was stuck and didn't know how to find her way out of the sadness, the overwhelm, the hopelessness. Desperate for help, she looked for resources. There were books that told her about the stages but no "manual" to navigate her out. She created her own manual. Through her desperate quest to find hope, Catherine discovered that: With a broader context of grief, you can move through it to a greater experience of life You can channel your pain to something that honors your loved one Counseling can get you on the path. Having someone who has gone into the unknown as a guide can help you navigate the unknowns of the path Your grief doesn't have to lead to suffering. You can feel the pain and move through it to purpose. Hers is a story of being broken open--going from stuck in grief to finding purpose on the other side of it. Now, she helps others do the same. More About Catherine After losing her infant son in 2011, Catherine embarked on a journey to do more than survive grief. The loss forever changed the trajectory of her life and sent her looking for meaning and purpose for the life she was given. She channeled the love for her son into her own healing, self-growth and personal empowerment. Today, she has created a framework to grief that disrupts conventional ways of looking at loss. She challenges her clients to step outside of a victim mindset and regain control of how they navigate grief. She teaches how to grow through grief and encourages speaking openly about grief to break down the walls of silence around grief. Catherine lives in San Diego wit her family where she speaks, writes and offers coaching to those who wat to do more than just survive grief. She is a board member of Empty Cradle and volunteers at Miracle Babies and The Ronald McDonald House. Her business, Grief INSPIRED supports those who are grieving and guides them to create a new normal that honors the ones they've lost. Things that made me go hmmm: From Catherine: "I was going through the motions. And I'd go through my day and I went to work and I did all those things. But I really wasn't living." "Why is there not a manual for this? I looked and I looked and I could not find what I personally needed." "We don't talk about grief as a society...and so we don't know how to deal with it." "It is very easy, and often understandable, to sit in your loss and feel like a victim and say 'My life is over.' And that's one route that you can take. But what I stand for is a different route that's saying, 'Let's work through this...Let's figure it out.' " "The reason why we are here is really to uncover who we really are, and what our what our gift to the world is." When grief happens to you. You don't necessarily need to be a victim, there is another way. So come to me and I will help you do that. And when it happens to someone that you love, someone that you know experiences a loss, don't be afraid to step in and be courageous enough to say, to say, 'I don't know what to say, but I'm here with you.' Don't avoid it. I know it can be hard, but those people will really, really appreciate you if you don't just avoid them. So step into it, and just say, 'I don't know how to help. But I want to help.' Can you imagine flying over Mexico as an aftershock from one of the world’s most deadly quakes shakes the earth below? I can’t, but my dad has the memory of that exact situation. The Mexico City Earthquake of 1985 killed over 10,000 people and left more than 250,000 without homes. Hundreds of buildings crumbled, and beneath Juarez Hospital, the miracle babies born on the day of the quake clung to life as rescuers fought to save them. My dad was right there, observing the horror and trying to help those involved make sense of it all. This is what you didn’t know about the deadly Mexico quake of 1985._________________________________________________________Don't forget to R A T E and R E V I E W! We sincerely appreciate it. Today we are chatting with a couple of incredibly powerful women about a potentially less desired topic. Our intention is to bring awareness to mamas and families dealing with premature birth. In honor of World Prematurity Day this coming Saturday, November 17th, we are talking about our tiny warriors and their warrior mamas. We are speaking about the miracles that exist to provide hope and to empower the mamas in the trenches of dealing with prematurity, the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and all of the fears and anxieties that come along with it. We have some incredibly inspiring and well-versed guests who have plenty of experience with this: Charleyne Oulton and Riana Luck. Charleyne is a confident and happy mom of three children who were all born prematurely. Charleyne has a passion for writing and is a well recognized published author with Golden Brick Road Publishing House and regular contributor for YGTMAMA. She is a popular health and wellness coach with It Works, works in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Reservist and is a Pisces who lives on beautiful Vancouver Island, BC. She is also an upcoming contributor in You've Got This Mama Too and You've Got This, Healthy Mama. Charleyne shares a brief snippet of her story. She has three children that were all born prematurely, within thirty-two months of each other. She had no idea that she was at risk for premature delivery. She was so uneducated around any other possibility of a birth plan other than a full term healthy pregnancy. She claims that it was horrible and terrifying, an event that she still suffers from PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) because of. Her first son's birthday brings up mixed emotions, joy is combined with having to relive really scary times. Her second pregnancy had her more prepared with the risks of premature delivery only because of her previous experience. The lead up to her son Jeffrie's birth was terrifying but born at twenty-eight weeks, he was a fighter and her strongest preemie. Less than a year later her daughter Juley Anne was born at twenty-six weeks, at less than 2 lbs. Her pregnancy was the most joyful pregnancy. She knew that she was going to have another preemie, her waters ruptured at twenty-two weeks and she was encouraged to terminate the pregnancy because the baby would not be viable at that time. She chose life and decided to try to try to keep her inside as long as possible. Combined she spent 110 days in the NICU with what she calls her little ‘miracles'. Riana is the mom of five; seven-year-old triplet boys, a four-year-old daughter, and a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Four out the five were preemie babies that spent a total of 119 days in the NICU. Riana is also an owner of two businesses, one being a successful cheerleading gym in Red Deer called Premier Academy, and co-owner of three others. She is also an upcoming contributor in You've Got This, Boss Mama. Riana shares that one of the biggest struggles from her NICU time was when she had other children at home depending on her and missing her. With her triplets, although it was hard, it was expected and they knew what they were in for. There were no other children at home who also needed attention, so they could devote all their time to be in the NICU. When her waters burst early with her last pregnancy she walked into the hospital in tears. She knew the long road ahead, and a lot more tears were shed as a coping mechanism. She also praises our outstanding health care system: “It's amazing what they can do for these little babies.” We are here to bring awareness to this difficult topic. Riana starts off by sharing her two different NICU experiences. Her triplet sons were born at thirty-one weeks, five days, which was expected and actually very good for triplets. Even though almost thirty-two weeks is a great milestone for triplets,
