Should we be reaching for the dinner plate before the pill bottle when treating mental illness? Well my next guests certainly think so. Dr Michael Dixon and Uma Naidoo are back on the podcast talking about the Food for Mood campaign, an idea that literally started around the King's dining table last year! This idea of food as medicine is truly taking shape in the UK, but without strategies to ensure people can actually attain a level of nutrition to unlock these potential benefits, we're simply reverberating ideas in an ineffective echo chamber. Michael and Uma are taking up the challenge, and launching the ‘Food for Mood' campaign that engages multiple stake holders including government, supermarkets and of course, medical professionals and promotes the idea and practical strategies to introduce nutritional psychiatry at scale.Dr. Uma Naidoo is a Harvard trained psychiatrist, professional chef and a trained Nutrition Specialist and her nexus of interests have found their niche in Nutritional Psychiatry. She is also the national bestselling author of This Is Your Brain On Food.Dr Michael Dixon is chairman of the college of medicine, he's been a general practitioner at College Surgery in Devon for over 35 years. Since the early 1990s, he has been a leader of the GP/clinical commissioning movement with its aim of allowing frontline clinicians a far greater role in improving local services and health. Since 2007, he has been visiting professor to the University of Westminster (Integrated School of Health) and was also appointed visiting professor of University College, London in 2012.

Today, I have the privilege of speaking with returning podcast guest Dr. Uma Naidoo. Dr. Uma is a Harvard University trained psychiatrist, professional chef, and nutrition specialist; she is also the national bestselling author of This Is Your Brain On Food, where she explains the ways in which food contributes to our mental health and how a diet can help treat and prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues such as anxiety, depression, and OCD.   In this episode, Dr. Uma and I discuss: The profound impact her book, This Is Your Brain On Food, has had on its readers over the past few years as people leaned into cooking and sought ways to manage stress and anxiety during the height of the pandemic. Ways in which we can alleviate anxiety by eating highly-nutritious foods designed to support physical and mental health. The positive and powerful impact both nutrition and lifestyle can have when dealing with a health concern. The unique challenges healthcare providers face when managing their own anxiety as they go through medical challenges. The reality that mental health is an all-body concept. Can what we eat really affect our mental state? YES MA'AM! In today's episode, I go over in super basic terms the connection between the brain and the gut and why what we put into our bodies directly relates to how we feel mentally. I'm currently reading This is Your Brain on Food by Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Nutritional Psychiatrist at Harvard. The information from this book is what is informing today's episode. I HIGHLY recommend this book! As women, it is important to learn about our hormones, how to handle stress, etc., as anxiety disorders tend to occur more in us than in men (but men need to learn about and monitor their mental health, too! We want our guys to be happy and healthy!). The type and quality of the food we eat can help support a healthy brain, so why not learn all we can?? I am going to create a few episodes based on the facts I learn from this book, so this topic will be peppered in with all other topics we discuss on this podcast! Oh, and welcome to Season 2! :)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 6.1 million children in the U.S. have ever been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopment disorder marked by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.  Although medications are often necessary and the first line of defense for medical providers, nutrition may be an effective treatment as well.  In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist, professional chef, nutrition specialist, and author of the national best-seller, “This Is Your Brain On Food.” We talked about what research shows about the role of diet in ADHD, and if it can take the place of medication. We also talked about which foods to avoid and which ones to focus on, nutritional deficiencies and anti-inflammatory foods, as well as quick and easy tips to pull together healthy meals and snacks every day.  Welcome 3:29 Let's start with your story!  6:36 We've all heard about ADHD, but what exactly is it and what is going on in the brain? 8:36 Can ADHD show up in other ways such as hyper-focus?  9:00 Why does it seem so many kids are being diagnosed with ADHD? 9:56 Do you think most doctors are too quick to prescribe medication? 12:45 Can diet work in place of medication and/or therapy for kids with ADHD? 16:23 How does a parent go about figuring out if their kids have nutritional deficiencies? 18:11 What does research show about gut health and ADHD? 19:35 What are your tips for getting kids to consume fermented foods? 21:33 Can food allergies and food sensitivities make ADHD symptoms worse? 22:02 Are there foods kids with ADHD should void?  22:35 What should parents keep in mind when they're trying to overhaul their kid's diet? 25:34 What are some good supplements for kids with ADHD? 26:38 Should parents eliminate gluten and dairy? 28:30 Can essential oils work? 29:23 How can parents deal with shame or guilt if they can't stick to the diet 100%? 30:25 What are your best tips for getting healthy meals on the table quickly and easily? 32:11 What can parents do if they want to go the route of nutritional psychology?  3:06 What are your favorite recipes from the book, “This Is Your Brain On Food.” LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Dr. Naidoo talks about this 2021 study which suggests those with ADHD are prone to have low levels of zinc. Dr. Naidoo also talks about this 2021 study out of Stanford which found fermented foods reduce inflammation.  Julie mentions she has used this Vetiver essential oil to help her child with focus.  Purchase Dr. Naidoo's book, “This Is Your Brain On Food.” Learn more about Dr. Naidoo on her website UmaNaidooMD.com and follow her on Instagram.
