In this episode, I'm sharing some of the small but powerful shifts that have helped our family eat healthier — without turning meals into a battle or making a million changes at once. As a certified nutritionist (and busy mom), I get how overwhelming it can feel to overhaul your family's eating habits. So instead, I'm walking you through the mindset shifts and simple strategies I use to keep things realistic and sustainable — especially during busy seasons. We chat about: How to take quiet ownership of your family's health (without forcing it) What the “thirds method” is and how it helps me build balanced plates Easy breakfast routines that start the day off strong Tips for handling picky eaters with less stress and more patience Why I don't buy certain things at the store (and how that helps everyone win) How I stock our kitchen with healthy staples that actually get used This episode is all about progress, not perfection — and finding rhythms that truly support your family's well-being.

Episode Overview What do you do when making healthier nutrition choices feels... restrictive? It's a moment many women know well: You're working toward a nutrition goal, feeling motivated and clear and then suddenly you're in front of the break room brownies, your partner's chips, or holiday desserts, and saying no feels wrong. Restrictive. Triggering, even. In this final episode of 2025, Jen explores a powerful but often misunderstood thought: "This feels restrictive." She shares how this thought can quietly sabotage your goals, what's really going on when it shows up, and what to do about it. You'll learn how to distinguish discomfort from restriction, meet your "inner rebel," and walk through challenging food choices without panicking, rebelling, or quitting. Jen also shares a relatable real-life nacho moment—and how she made a decision that honored her goals and her values. In this episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC sits down with fellow FNTP and NTA educator Hallie Loy-Roby for a practical, honest conversation about building real, sustainable meal-planning habits that support foundational health for overall wellbeing.  Hallie Loy-Roby is a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, course developer, and Assistant Instructor with the Nutritional Therapy Association. Through her practice, Holistically Hallie, she helps clients understand digestion, blood sugar regulation, and liver and gallbladder function with a clear, evidence-informed approach rooted in real food and bio-individuality. She's known for blending science, practicality, and grounded encouragement in a way that helps people take meaningful action without perfectionism or overwhelm. Together, Jamie and Hallie unpack what meal planning looks like in real life—without the pressure, elaborate systems, or unrealistic expectations that so often derail people. They explore the power of consistency, how to build nutrient-dense meals from simple ingredients, and how intentional planning reduces stress, supports digestion, stabilizes blood sugar, and frees up mental energy. Topics Covered: Beginning meal planning when you feel disorganized or stretched thin Creating balanced meals using protein, whole-food carbohydrates, fiber, and healthy fats Increasing color and diversity on the plate for improved digestion and nutrient density Using leftovers, ingredient prep, and theme nights to simplify the week Supporting picky eaters or adults who were never exposed to real vegetables growing up Identifying early signs of blood sugar issues or digestive stress Using tools—from sticky notes to AI—to make real food easier Building a kitchen rhythm that aligns with the Foundations of Nutritional Therapy The conversation is steady, grounded, and refreshingly doable. Jamie and Hallie bring clarity to a topic that often feels overcomplicated, reminding listeners that small steps—done consistently—are what shift energy, digestion, mood, and long-term health.   Resources Mentioned: Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA) Episode 66: SIBO Symptoms and Solutions Episode 6: The Dr. Francis M Pottenger Episode  Episode 69: The Dr. Weston A Price Episode Episode 46: Wellness 101 Episode 60: Super Foods, Super Kids Episode 4: Bio-Individuality Episode 11: Digestive Hell (Learn DIGESTION from the NTA's founder, Gray Graham) Episode 10: Optimal Wellness Starts Here (How DIGESTION is supposed to work!) Dr. Leslie answers a question from her Facebook group: "Why do I get a horrible migraine every time I try to eat healthier?" If you've ever felt trapped between knowing you should change your diet and your body punishing you when you try, this episode is for you. Dr. Leslie explains why abrupt dietary changes, - yes, even healthy ones - can trigger debilitating migraines. She breaks down how your digestive system becomes acclimated to your current routine, even if that routine is fast food and survival mode. When you suddenly switch from a Big Mac to chicken and broccoli, your body goes into shock. Your gallbladder prepared for fat that isn't coming. Your pancreas expected glucose that never arrived. Your stomach doesn't have enough acid for all that protein. The result? A three-day migraine that makes you give up on healing entirely. Dr. Leslie reveals why this isn't a detox reaction or a sign that healthy food doesn't work for you, it's simply your hypersensitive system responding to change. She explains how to make gradual shifts that support your digestive function instead of overwhelming it. If you've been stuck in the cycle of wanting to heal but feeling worse every time you try, and you'd like guidance on making changes your body can actually handle, Dr. Leslie offers free consultations. As moms, we want easy AND healthy meal ideas, but so often we feel like we have to pick it is one or the other. We tried to eat well in the past and thought we were doing okay. But there were major challenges with what Rudy could digest. After his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, we committed to being more intentional about eating in a healthier way, AND we found a way around Rudy's challenges! Our daughter Courtney led the charge by creating new recipes, many of which included more plant-based ingredients. On the road to eating more plant based, there are three things that we learned to get started: 1. Meet people where they are 2. Each person's plan will be different 3. Experiment with different foods and new ways of prepared them There is a debate about whether sugar leads to cancer or its growth. We're not medical professionals and can't answer that question. But what we HAVE learned, and makes sense to us, is that too much sugar CAN lead to other conditions that in turn, may lead to cancer. Reduce Sugar One of the first things that we did was to start counting the grams of sugar in each serving of our food, and limited it to 36g a day for Rudy, and 24g a day for Robin. We found that adding seasonings and spices really helped to replace some of the flavors that we associate with the sweetness of sugar. Reduce Processed Foods We also further reduced processed foods, including processed meats! Yes, we kept some things like canned beans, but in general we made a conscious effort to reduce food that can stay on the shelf for months. As our doctor says, if you can't pronounce all of the ingredients, it's probably not good for us to eat it. Eat More FreshOkay, THIS had been the hitch for more than 40 years. As a child, Rudy ate some bad watermelon and since then, he was unable to digest any fresh fruits and vegetables. Even many that were cooked to some degree, caused problems for him. These foods – many of them known to have cancer-fighting nutrients – were a non-starter and he really wanted to eat them! This was so unusual that it was a mystery to his doctors. Rudy says that as people we need to be in community, and learn about each other's experiences. Once his sister really understood his issues, she suggested that he might have an enzyme deficiency that was preventing my digestion of these foods. He found a plant-based enzyme that has been life-changing. And today he can eat ANY fruit or vegetable that he wants. Other Changes We're Making We rarely have fried, grilled and roasted foods anyway, but learned that those should be minimized. And we're looking at the Mediterranean diet and learning more about Blue Zones – areas of the world where people typically live longer and healthier lives, much of which is due to the way that they eat. The Results so Far We've both lost weight and are in healthy BMI ranges. People often think that when you work out, you should have a lot of bulk. However, a body mass calculator may tell you differently. Your BMI is calculated based on your age, gender, height, and weight. Here's a link to a BMI calculator but there are also others - https://www.calculator.net/bmi-calculator.html. It's helpful for setting a baseline and following your progress!Thank you so much for spending time with us today! We hope you enjoyed our conversation, related to something we said and laughed along the way. Please give us a like and subscribe to our podcast, so you don't miss ANYTHING! With no end of diets to choose from, it is clear they collectively make little long-term impact on body weight with most people regaining any weight lost within months. So, rather than putting the focus on dieting to lose weight, how much impact could a change in mindset to concentrate on eating healthier have instead? Well, in an interesting twist to this question, a research study designed to educate people on portion sizes, actually found that people ate more food. But the catch was that it was healthier food options they were choosing, with the flow-on benefit of them eating fewer kilojoules overall.Links referred to in the podcastEffect of portion size training on food choices https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29353006 Episode transcriptTo access the full episode transcript, go to the following link and select the individual podcast episode and then click on the ‘Transcript' tab https://thinkingnutrition.buzzsprout.comConnect with meInstagram: doctimcroweFacebook: Thinking NutritionTwitter: CroweTim
