Did you know that a significant number of IBS patients struggle with anxiety and depression? This stark reality drives home why it's crucial to view the brain and gut not as separate but as intricately linked systems. In today's Live Well Be Well episode, I sit down with Dr. Emeran Mayer, a leading expert in the brain-gut connection. Together, we explore how this connection influences our overall health, emphasising the need for a holistic approach to both mental and gut health. Dr. Mayer explains how stress impacts our gut health just as significantly as diet does and discusses the benefits of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and other stress-management techniques in treating gut-related issues. This conversation delves into:✔️ The two-way communication between our brain and gut.✔️ The role of stress in gut health and effective stress-reduction techniques.✔️ The importance of a microbiota-friendly diet rich in fiber and polyphenols.✔️ Debunking myths around digestive enzymes, types of milk, and sweeteners.✔️ The influence of environmental factors like plastics on our gut health.✔️ How psychedelic therapy is emerging as a potential treatment for gut health issues linked to psychological stress.Dr. Mayer leaves us with a profound definition of what it means to Live Well Be Well - that true wellness comes not just from what we eat in isolation, but from leading a life that's good for ourselves, our communities, and the planet.Who is Dr. Emeran Mayer?Dr. Mayer is a prominent gastroenterologist and neuroscientist, recognized for his extensive research on the brain-gut connection. With professorships at UCLA and authorship of significant works like "The Mind-Gut Connection" and "The Gut-Immune Connection," Dr. Mayer advocates for a comprehensive approach to health that marries diet with lifestyle modifications to enhance both mental and physical well-being.

In this special episode of the Mind-Gut Conversation podcast, I discuss my personal opinions on topics related to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) & Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Some key questions and topics I discuss are: · The issue with diagnosing SIBO · How to treat SIBO, without antibiotics · Why the low FODMAP diet is not a practical solution · IBS is not a gut-disorder · How to manage IBS symptoms My name is Emeran Mayer, and I have been a gastroenterologist and neuroscientist for the last 40+ years. I have written over 450 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and have published two best-selling books, The Mind-Gut Connection & The Mind-Gut Immune Connection. Some of the unpopular opinions I explain in detail during this episode are the following: 1) SIBO is not a valid diagnosis and is not an important cause of some of the most common digestive symptoms. Treating it with antibiotics is not only bad for your gut microbes, but also for your overall health. This treatment's main benefit is for the pharmaceutical industry. 2) Even though the low FODMAP diet improves gut symptoms in the short-term, it is bad for your gut microbiome and your overall health in the long-term. 3) IBS is not a gut disorder, but a disorder of altered interactions between the brain, gut and its microbiome. This is the reason that therapies solely targeted at the gut are generally not effective IBS therapies. I hope you enjoy the episode! Learn more at www.emeranmayer.com

In this episode, Lydia and Maureen answer questions from listeners regarding mind and gut connection. They uncover how stress affects the body, and how our gut health affects mental health in everyday and long term health.
Have you ever wondered what the mind-gut connection actually means? Your gut and brain are in regular communication through all kinds of signaling within your body - so what impacts one affects the other. Have you ever felt your stomach turn because of a distressing thought? There you go! In this episode, Elizabeth Mintun speaks with functional gut health registered dietician Naria Le Mire about the different ways that gut health and hormone imbalance can impact us. Naria shares a wealth of information in particular about the importance of considering our gut health for clarity of mind. Key Takeaways: Prevention in key - our bodies are offering us all kinds of subtle clues when things are out of balance. If we listen and attune, we can respond early and take care of ourselves. Oftentimes brain fog is an indication of imbalance in the gut. Addressing gut health and hormone balance can lead to a much smoother experience of perimenopause and menopause. Jamie Brown, renown Charlotte restauranteur, suffered from anxiety and severe panic attacks resulting in depression and often suicidal thoughts. She tried everything. One day, as a last ditch effort, she began to consider that her "mental" symptoms could be some sort of autoimmune response. She took this further and started to test her response to foods. Six years later, she hasn't had a panic attack since. In this episode, Robbie brings in Dr. Carlos Jorge, MD who is triple board certified in family medicine, lipidology, functional medicine and anti-aging and Dr. Nicole Fodel, DC who has an MS in Oriental Medicine and is a Licensed Acupuncturist, to join the conversation with Jamie about her nutritional journey. The gut-brain connection is a two-way communication system between your gut and brain. It's an intricate network of nerve cells, chemicals, and microbes and explains why your stomach produces juices when you think about food, and why stress can cause stomach cramps or a churning feeling. This connection links your central nervous system (CNS), including the brain, with the enteric nervous system (ENS) in your gut. Often referred to as the "second brain," the ENS significantly impacts (and creates a link between) gut health and mental health. Phrases like "gut-wrenching" or "butterflies in the stomach" illustrate this connection further, as our digestive system responds to emotions such as anger, anxiety, sadness, nervousness and happiness. Consequently, gastrointestinal issues can both cause and result from stress, anxiety, or depression; demonstrating the close relationship between the brain and the digestive system. So if we improve our gut health, we better our mental health. And in return, better mental health can alleviate certain digestive issues and lead to stronger gut health. Dr Emeran Mayer is a leading expert on the mind-gut connection. A world renowned and award winning gastroenterologist, neuroscientist and Distinguished Research Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Physiology and Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Dr Emeran has accumulated 35 years of research on the clinical and neurobiological relationship between the digestive system and the nervous system. Dr Emeran is also a best selling author of the books “The Mind-Gut Connection”, “The Mind-Gut Immune Connection” and the recipe book “Interconnected Plates”. His work primarily explores the complex interactions between the gut and the brain, particularly how these interactions impact conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic pain, and emotional well-being. In this episode of The Happier Life Project, Dr Emeran simplifies how the brain and gut communicate. He discusses the influence food has on our emotions and expresses his frustrations with ultra-processed food suppliers, for producing harmful and addictive products. Dr Emeran also explains the science behind the Mediterranean diet as a model for optimal gut health and shares research on the benefits of following a restricted eating window. By not not having food in your stomach 24 hours a day, you allow your gut to cleanse itself of unwanted bacteria in the small intestine and activate its 'housekeeper' function. Have you ever felt like you've tried everything and nothing will work to resolve the mental, gut, and bodily struggles you face? I know that feeling all too well. In this episode, I share my favorite alternative healing practices that western medicine might refer to as "pseudoscience" or "unsafe" but I've seen them change my life and my client's. The English language provides many examples of the communication system between the brain and the gut: a pit in your stomach, butterflies in your stomach, and gut feelings are all expressions we accept as standard. But beyond expressions, there's a very real connection between our feelings and our biology. Because our brain and our enteric nervous system have a complex communication network, an imbalance in gut bacteria can lead to emotional stress and vice versa. Dr. Emeran Mayer is a world-renowned gastroenterologist and neuroscientist with over 40 years of experience studying the complex and bidirectional relationship of the brain and the gut. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles, written two bestselling books, and is a leading expert on all things gut and microbiome. On today's show, he's sharing the fascinating science on the relationship between our gut and our feelings. This interview contains conversations on how the brain and gut communicate, including how the gut responds to stress. You'll learn about the interesting way microbes respond to diet changes, and how human cells and microbial cells differ when it comes to adaptation. Dr. Mayer is sharing the latest science on gut health, as well as realistic tips you can use to improve your microbial health, extend your lifespan, and support your gut for years to come. In this episode you'll discover: The evolution of the human gut. How the brain and gut communicate. Why the body empties the gut in a fight or flight situation. The role stress plays in infections like H. pylori. Why overuse of antibiotics is harmful to young children. How mindfulness and meditation can impact your genes. What a healthy lifestyle network is, and why it contributes to longevity. Two behaviors that influence healthy gene expression. Why our microbes can adapt quickly to diet changes. How changes in technology and lifestyle have created a genetic mismatch. The connection between hormones and microbes. How corporate interests can block important research. What it means to have gut feelings. The importance of considering biases and trauma when making a gut decision. Why focusing on microbial health disproves most fad diets. The fascinating science of prenatal microbial development. How to change the health of your microbiome. The importance of consuming short-chain fatty acids. How stress and fear affect the microbiome. The potential harm of colonoscopies, & the best way to reduce your risk of colon cancer. Items mentioned in this episode include: PiqueLife.com/model -- Use code MODEL at checkout for 10% off! If you suffer from bloating, abdominal cramping, frequent intermittent episodes of diarrhea, alternating with constipation or a lot of gas, you may suffer from IBS. IBS also known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion in the medical world. This means we've done a thorough workup with imaging, and endoscopy, blood tests and cannot find any cause for your symptoms. Instead of taking an antidepressant or antispasmodic, try mitigating stress levels, exercising and improving your diet with fiber-rich and plant based foods to see how you can improve your gut health and your mental health. If you have questions, comments or concerns, feel free to DM me @kryselek. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens. Our gut is a powerful control center, due to its bidirectional communication with the brain, which we call the gut-brain axis. This links the emotional and cognitive centers of the brain with intestinal function. Certain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are tied to imbalances in the gut-brain axis and can benefit from taking a systems approach in healing, which includes looking at diet, the microbiome, stress management, and more. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Emeran Mayer, and Dr. George Papanicolaou about various root causes of irritable bowel syndrome, including microbiome imbalance, parasites, and stress. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is board certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine certified practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine's focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. Emeran Mayer is the author of The Gut-Immune Connection as well as The Mind-Gut Connection. He has studied brain-body interactions for the last 40 years, is the executive director of the G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience, and is the founding director of the UCLA Brain Gut Microbiome Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past 25 years, and he is considered a pioneer and world leader in the area of brain-gut microbiome interactions and its clinical implications. Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine practitioner. He worked on the Navajo reservation for four years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility, where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health, a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens. Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with the latest discoveries on the human microbiome, a practical guide in the tradition of The Second Brain, and The Good Gut that conclusively demonstrates the inextricable, biological link between the mind and the digestive system. We have all experienced the connection between our mind and our gut—the decision we made because it “felt right”; the butterflies in our stomach before a big meeting; the anxious stomach rumbling we get when we're stressed out. While the dialogue between the gut and the brain has been recognized by ancient healing traditions, including Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, Western medicine has by and large failed to appreciate the complexity of how the brain, gut, and more recently, the gut microbiota—the microorganisms that live inside our digestive tract—communicate with one another. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer, professor of medicine and executive director of the UCLA Center for Neurobiology of Stress, offers a revolutionary and provocative look at this developing science, teaching us how to harness the power of the mind-gut connection to take charge of our health and listen to the innate wisdom of our bodies.
