Jaws has become a classic New England-centric movie over the years, but it turns out, behind the scenes, it was anything but easy to put together. In fact, it was so chaotic that a new comedy on the stage highlights all the production maladies. It's called "The Shark is Broken", and New England theater owner Bill Hanney is lending his talents to the show to make sure it's a resounding success. He returns to the show this week to talk about the show's journey to Broadway, along with what's happening these days at the North Shore Music Theatre.

Actor David CoffeeWhen considering a guest to help usher in the holiday season, I knew whom I wanted to interview. My guest next week is not a paranormal celebrity per-se. His show, however, is an annual holiday tradition complete with four spirits who help transform the money-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge into a kind-hearted man. Actor David Coffee has brilliantly played Scrooge in Massachusetts' North Shore Music Theatre's (NSMT) annual production of A Christmas Carol for many years. He first appeared in the NSMT production in 1992 at the age of 35. For almost three decades, he has performed the role of Scrooge to well over one million theatergoers. It might surprise you to know that he travels from Arlington, Texas, each year to play this iconic role. When I met Coffee last month, I was introduced to a kindhearted, jovial man whose off-stage personality is much more akin to the happy Scrooge you meet at the conclusion of A Christmas Carol.Join us for a trip backstage as I interview actor David Coffee. We talk about theater, A Christmas Carol, and his life as a successful actor. A Christmas Carol begins December 1 and plays 17 performances through December 23. Fall's a busy time over at the North Shore Music Theater, with the new production of "Kinky Boots" about to get underway! Owner Bill Hanney talks with Nichole about the preps for the limited run of the classic show, this year's run of "A Christmas Carol", and how the theater's fighting back against ticket scalpers. We also get a sneak peek at the theater's 2023 lineup! Millions of children around the Commonwealth don't have access to basic hygiene products, like soap, toothpaste, and deodorant. Being without these items can lead them to struggle with confidence and affect their health. Kerry Carter, CEO of Hope and Comfort in Needham, talks about their efforts to get these essential items out to children through youth groups, schools, and other venues. She also explains how inflation is affecting both supply and demand for these items, and how you can help them get these items to children who need them.

As the saying goes, the show must go on, and indeed it has! Joining Jordan to chat about current productions at the North Shore Music Theatre was its owner, Bill Hanney.
In this episode, Jennifer talks to Analisa Leaming about learning to separate your emotions from your thoughts, being willing to examine what is on the other side of fear, and using our bodies as the vessel through which feelings can pass. Born in Hartland, Wisconsin, Melanie Howell-Brooks currently lives in Canton, MA and performs throughout the New England area. Educated at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory which brought this midwestern native to our shores. We spoke at length about her main voice of baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, two instruments we find choice and not brought to the spotlight enough. Mrs. Brooks is an active musician in the Boston area and is a member of the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, as well as smaller permutations of that group – Oddsong and the Jazz Composers Alliance Saxophone Quartet. She also performs with Mehmet Ali Sanlikol's large jazz ensemble, Whatsnext?, the John Allmark Orchestra, and has formed her own group, The Phoenix Fire Collective. Other performance groups include appearances with the BT/ALC Big Band, as well as the Fernando Huergo Big Band. She has been a member of the Beantown Swing Orchestra since its inception in 2006, though currently in more of a mentorship role for other players. Other more recent notable performances include recording with David Liebman under the direction of Ken Schaphorst with Mr. Sanlikol's band, Whatsnext? as well as a Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra performance with special guests, Jerry Bergonzi, Marshall Gilkes, and Lewis Porter. She has also played in the backing bands for The Temptations/Four Tops as well as with Johnny Mathis, performed with Symphony New Hampshire, and has been a pit orchestra musician with the North Shore Music Theatre. She has also performed and toured with Whatsnext? on baritone sax and bass clarinet performing alongside David Liebman and Tiger Okoshi. Mrs. Brooks toured Turkey and Cyprus and played at the Istanbul Jazz Festival in 2017 along with Mr. Okoshi and Whatsnext?. In 2016 she had the honor of performing with Aretha Franklin in her band when she came to Boston. That year she also celebrated the life of David Bowie with a concert led by Russ Gershon of the Either/Orchestra on baritone sax, flute, and bass clarinet performing all of his last recording, Blackstar. Melanie in her own words But more than that, I'm also a software engineer, someone who loves to make stuff, and a huge proponent of STEAM in schools, given my background in music education, engineering, and the love of putting things together. I'm also a polyglot - I've been studying Japanese for over 20 years now, though still consider myself only an Intermediate level speaker, but I also picked up Turkish - enough to use while on tour in Turkey to chat with locals. We hope you enjoy this wide-ranging conversation with musician and friend Melanie Howell Brooks.
