This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Utah is an energy-rich state – producing clean wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric power, as well as coal, oil, and natural gas. Here to discuss our energy future is Thom Carter, the executive director for the Utah Office of Energy Development. THOM CARTER Energy is an enabler and makes our modern life possible. In Utah, we take an any-of-the-above approach to energy, allowing all forms to compete in the market – from wind and solar to oil and gas and geothermal. That competition enables us to have some of the lowest energy prices in the nation. This doesn't happen by accident. From the days of the pioneers, Utah has had a commitment and tradition to planning for the future. In that spirit, our office spent the last year gathering expert and public input to create a plan ensuring Utah's energy stays affordable, stays reliable, and stays sustainable. We just released the work of those efforts, which encourages more innovation in energy production, increases reliability, and encourages environmentally conscious decisions so we can keep our lights on and our homes warm. We encourage you to visit our state's new plan at energy.utah.gov. DEREK MILLER Affordable energy is a must have in our global economy and Utah is fortunate to have some of the lowest electricity prices in the nation. That helps keep our businesses competitive and homes comfortable all year long. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: May 12, 2022

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. The Utah Clean Air Partnership leads the charge to ensure each Utahn understands out air quality issues. As we enter our winter inversion period, it's important to know how we can be engaged. UCAIR's executive director Thom Carter is here to share more. THOM CARTER In our efforts to clear the air there are no perfect answers, but there are practical solutions. More than 50% of our wintertime pollutants come from the cars we drive. Maybe the only silver lining from COVID-19 has been our ability to find success in teleworking. Prior to the pandemic, there were concerns about infrastructure and productivity, however, we have found that productivity is up and people are finding ways to be successful during this difficult time. Taking all of these commuter miles off the road will slow the build into our inversions and can be a real help when we work towards cleaner air. For those that can't telework, you can find out practical solutions in the TravelWise strategies of trip chaining, taking public transit, walking, biking or carpooling. DEREK MILLER We hope you'll join us in February for the Clear the Air Challenge, as we all do our part to improve Utah's air quality. You can reach out to the team at UCAIR and find out more ways to be engaged on their website. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, and this is Speaking on Business. COVID has had an interesting effect on our roads and the quality of our air. Freeway volumes dropped and the quality of the air improved as people began teleworking instead of reporting to the office. What does this trend mean for long-term planning in our communities? It could be time for a "re-direct." Hear from Ted Knowlton of the Wasatch Front Regional Council and UCAIR's Thom Carter as they discuss what teleworking could mean as we plan for growth in Utah's cities and towns. Special thanks to ULCT sponsor, Utopia, for sponsoring this podcast.
The outbreak of COVID forced many workers to move from the desk in their office to a desk at home. Our business is now done, in large part, virtually. Fewer cars on the road has made a huge improvement in our air, especially in valleys where ozone and inversion are typical seasonal problems. What do managers and staff think of the new "work from home" concept? Hear from UCAIR's Executive Director Thom Carter about details from a recent survey. He also explains grants and other opportunities to use what we've learned to make positive, permanent changes. For complete survey results and grant opportunities, contact UCAIR's Thom Carter at thom@ucair.org.
