What happens when you bring together experience leaders from healthcare and elite sports education? You discover powerful insights that transcend industries and reveal universal truths about creating exceptional experiences.Meet Heather Brace, Chief People Officer at Intermountain Healthcare with its 68,000 employees across six states, and Mike Milliron, Chief Operating Officer at IMG Academy, the world-renowned training ground for elite athletes. Both leaders share a remarkable commitment to turning feedback into action. Our host, Jeannie Walters, had the privilege of interviewing them at the X4 conference hosted by Qualtrics in Salt Lake City in March of 2025. Their organizations have rejected traditional annual surveys in favor of frequent, targeted listening programs that capture real-time sentiment. As Heather explains, "What does an employee remember? Probably what happened in the last 30 days." Both have created what they call "closed-loop" feedback systems where they not only collect insights but transparently communicate the actions they'll take as a result. The most compelling revelation? Their data shows that employee engagement hinges on surprisingly simple human elements. At Intermountain Healthcare, they discovered that employees who stay past the four-year mark typically remain for ten years or more. This insight drove them to map the complete employee journey, identifying critical moments where intervention could improve retention.Meanwhile, IMG Academy has developed highly personalized approaches that align students, parents and staff around individualized development plans. As Mike powerfully states, "We've found you can do more damage than good if you ask for insights and then just sit on it."Ready to transform your organization's approach to experience? Listen now and discover how these leaders have built cultures where feedback drives meaningful change, accountability matters, and experiences are designed around authentic human needs.Follow Heather Brace on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heather-brace/Follow Mike Milliron on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-milliron-6a234713/Resources Mentioned:Qualtrics -- https://www.qualtrics.com/Experience Investigators -- https://experienceinvestigators.comWant to ask a question? Their approach looks at the underlying mechanisms of speech controlled by the central nervous system rather than the words spoken. The technology has been validated to correlate with clinical diagnoses at a high accuracy level. It provides real-time, objective assessments to healthcare providers, which could help overcome biases and reveal early signs of the presence of a disease. Henry explains, "Canary Speech is now about eight years old. In this insightful episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, host Chris Schembra welcomes Mitch Warner, Managing Partner at The Arbinger Institute and co-author of Leadership and Self-Deception. Mitch guides us through the core principles of Arbinger's groundbreaking work, exploring the central idea of self-deception—a psychological barrier that prevents individuals from seeing others clearly and, ultimately, impedes personal and organizational growth.Mitch introduces the concept of self-deception as the tendency to see ourselves inaccurately, often with a biased or distorted lens, which leads us to misjudge others as obstacles or tools rather than as people with legitimate needs and perspectives. This inward mindset results from what Arbinger terms self-betrayal, a failure to act on our internal sense of how we should treat others. Mitch emphasizes that self-deception is not just a personal issue but a core problem in organizations, affecting everything from team collaboration to leadership effectiveness. He explains how leaders unwittingly create and sustain the very conflicts they seek to resolve by failing to see their own role in the challenges they face. The discussion shifts to Arbinger's proposed solution: shifting from an inward mindset to an outward mindset. Mitch explains that an inward mindset centers on self-justification, blame, and defensiveness, where others are seen merely as obstacles or means to achieve personal goals. By contrast, an outward mindset recognizes others as individuals with needs, goals, and aspirations as real as our own. Mitch discusses how adopting an outward mindset can transform workplaces, leading to stronger relationships, better communication, higher accountability, and improved results. One of the most powerful concepts discussed is the idea of collusion—a cycle of conflict where two or more people reinforce each other's negative behaviors. Mitch describes how this dynamic is fueled by self-deception, as individuals are more focused on defending their own views than understanding others' perspectives. Collusion often manifests as blame, resentment, and resistance, creating silos and perpetuating dysfunction in teams. Mitch explains that breaking the cycle of collusion requires leaders to first recognize their own part in the conflict, shifting their focus from changing others to changing themselves.Mitch also offers insights into the updated 4th edition of Leadership and Self-Deception, which features modernized examples, diverse characters, and new scenarios that address contemporary workplace challenges. The new edition incorporates practical tools and study guides to help readers apply Arbinger's principles in both personal and professional contexts. Mitch outlines some of these tools, such as identifying moments of self-betrayal, practicing active curiosity about others, and implementing feedback loops that promote transparency and accountability. The episode concludes with a discussion of why these concepts are particularly relevant today. Mitch emphasizes that in a world marked by uncertainty, division, and rapid change, the ability to see others clearly and adopt an outward mindset is more urgent than ever. He explains how leaders who embrace these principles can create workplaces that are more inclusive, resilient, and adaptable. By fostering cultures where people are genuinely seen and valued, organizations can enhance performance, improve retention, and unlock greater potential at every level. Why You Should Listen:If you're a leader, manager, or someone interested in personal development, this episode offers a practical framework for understanding how mindset shapes behavior, relationships, and organizational outcomes. Mitch Warner presents Arbinger's concepts with clarity, making complex psychological principles accessible and actionable. Whether you're facing communication breakdowns, conflict, or disengagement within your team, the concepts of self-deception, collusion, and outward mindset will provide you with new ways to diagnose and address root problems. By applying these principles, you can transform not only your leadership but also your everyday interactions, creating deeper connections and achieving sustainable results. Key Discussion Points:Self-Deception as a Barrier to Leadership. The Inward vs. Outward Mindset.Collusion: A Cycle of Blame and Justification.Self-Betrayal as the Root of Dysfunction.Practical Tools for Mindset Shift. Notable Quotes:“Self-deception isn't about the other person—it's about us and the stories we create to justify our behavior.” — Mitch Warner“To change others, leaders must first change themselves. It starts by seeing our own contributions to the problems we face.” — Mitch Warner“When leaders have the courage to recognize how they contribute to problems, they open the door to transformational change—not just for themselves, but for their entire organizations.” — Mitch Warner“Imagine a workplace where no one has an image to protect—where people are fully open to feedback and focused solely on the mission.” — Mitch Warner“We often create the very conflicts we seek to resolve by failing to see others clearly and acting from a place of self-deception.” — Mitch Warner“Gratitude is one of the tools that can shift us from an inward to an outward mindset, helping us to acknowledge the humanity and value of others.” — Chris Schembra Action Items:Subscribe: If this conversation resonated with you, don't forget to subscribe for more heart-centered discussions on leadership, empathy, and gratitude.Share: Send this episode to someone who could use inspiration and a reminder to practice gratitude.Reflect: Who in your life deserves a thank you? Prior to that, he served for eleven years as Intermountain's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Currently he serves as an Executive Coach at MEDI, the largest executive coaching firm in the nation dedicated exclusively to the healthcare industry. Additionally, he is an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah. He has been noted amongst 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare. “Be capable, be affable, and be available. You've got to first become a very capable physician, and just going to medical school or even doing residency doesn't do it. So, do your best to become a doctor's doctor.” Dr. Charles Sorenson, the Founding Director of Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute, has been at the forefront of medicine's leadership for decades now. Join us in this episode of The Medicine Mentors as Dr. Charles Sorenson shares his transformation from being a surgeon to becoming an influential healthcare leader, the elements needed for tomorrow's physician leader, and how to be a force of trust in healthcare. Pearls of Wisdom:   1. Try to employ a ‘success without side effects' mentality, where putting the interests of your patients before your own becomes the point of success and not whatever outcome you expected.  2. A professional is one who is cognisant of how they affect a team or a patient. The patient's best interest is also a professional's best interest.  3. A leader doesn't always need a professional title or role. Learn to lead in the role you have now. In other words, learn to harness the referent power you have everyday to influence and change things for the better. Improve upon your character and competence follows.  4. Leadership means being affable, available, and capable. Being affable means having the humility to recognize your own limitations and knowing when to seek out advice or help. Being available means saying yes to opportunities and being open to risk. Being capable means to not only be a competent physician but learning to be a ‘doctor's doctor.'

Welcome to your weekly news update, we have 3 stories for you this week, New bill proposes banning Chinese drones for the Federal Government, DJI Matrice 3D leaks, and Zipline's new partnerships with Healthcare in Ohio. Make your voice heard: https://droneadvocacyalliance.com/?vvsrc=%2Fcampaigns%2F105982%2Frespond First up this week is a “new” bill that would prohibit the Federal Government from purchasing Chinese Drones, again… To be clear, this is a reintroduction of a past, failed bill. Florida Senator Rick Scott introduced the American Safety Drone Act in the Senate and now Representative Gallagher from Wisconsin is now doing the same in the House. This new bill is set to be announced this week, and would prohibit the federal government from using any tax dollars to purchase UAV equipment from China. The bill would require a federal report detailing the number of foreign commercial drones and “Covered” unmanned aircraft procured by federal departments. At the non-federal level, the bill would also bar local and state governments from purchasing Chinese drones using federal grants. Both Scott, in the past, and Gallagher now are trying to attach this to the National Defense Authorization Act, which is the only likely way for it to advance since it's highly unlikely to move on its own. Once again we see a country of origin ban rather than a set of comprehensive standards that any drone used for government purposes must conform to. The best way to fight this is to use the DAA's link in the description for instructions on reaching out to your representatives and oppose the National Defense Authorization Act. Next up this week are some DJI leaks, for the Matrice 3D. New pictures of the drone and new pictures of the rumored DJI Dock Mini. As we covered previously, the Matrice 3D appears to be a simplified DJI Mavic 3 Thermal with fixed arms, top-mounted SDK port and mounting, and built-in RTK. New leaks about the Mini Dock appears to shows an angled channel that the Matrice 3D would fit into in contrast to the flat landing pad of the existing DJI dock. The M3D also appears to be slightly larger than the Mavic 3 with much thicker arms and larger propellers. Pretty cool innovations coming from DJI, we'll see if this is released any time soon! Lastly this week is an announcement from Zipline, who has partnered with a number of healthcare providers in Ohio and Michigan. Zipline announced in September that they'd gotten FAA permission to operate BVLOS without visual observers, and now they appear to be ready to use that permission. Partnerships include the Cleveland Clinic, Michigan Medicine, Intermountain Healthcare, and Ohio Health. With these new partnerships, Zipline aims to deliver prescriptions directly to a home's front door by 2025. The Zipline P2 system cruises at 70 mph, an altitude of 300 feet and uses a small “droid” to drop packages in places where the main aircraft can't get to. Pretty cool tech! That's it! Have a great week and we'll see you for our live on Monday on our airplane channel! https://dronexl.co/2023/10/31/zipline-drones-deliver-meds/ https://www.flyzipline.com/newsroom/news/announcements/faa-authorizes-zipline-to-fly-bvlos https://www.reuters.com/technology/us-house-panel-seeks-ban-federal-purchases-chinese-drones-ft-2023-11-01/ https://dronexl.co/2023/10/30/dji-matrice-3d-dock-mini/ https://dronexl.co/2023/10/31/dji-dock-mini-matrice-3d-photos/ https://droneadvocacyalliance.com/?vvsrc=%2Fcampaigns%2F105982%2Frespond

Treasurer Marlo Oaks on the Real Harm of ESGs

This week on Breaking Battlegrounds, we are joined by Utah State Treasurer, Marlo Oaks. Later in the show, we check in with former Arizona Congressional candidate Mark DeLuzio, a Gold Star father, for a look at the true meaning of Memorial Day. Finally, Jeff Taylor of the Salvation Army calls in to discuss the homelessness crisis and what can be done to solve it. -Treasurer Marlo Oaks spent 17 years overseeing multi-billion-dollar portfolios, first at Farmers Insurance Group in Los Angeles (15 years, $24 billion) and then at Intermountain Healthcare (2+ years, $7.5 billion) in Salt Lake City. He oversaw the Treasury function at Intermountain, along with all the community portfolios, including Primary Children's Hospital Foundation. He has experience managing foundation, endowment, healthcare/hospital system, insurance, defined benefit (pension), defined contribution (401K), taxable, and tax-exempt portfolios, including manager searches, due diligence, risk management, asset allocation, investment strategy, investment policies and guidelines, and reporting to senior executives and boards of investment committees.During the 2008 – 2009 Financial Crisis, his portfolios' performance were among the best in the country, outperforming the median corporate pension plan by 11.5% (funded status basis), representing $200 million in added portfolio value. The insurance pools were top performers among their peers, allowing the company to purchase AIG's Direct Automobile Business, adding $4 billion to the portfolios, at the bottom of the market (March 2009). Treasurer Oaks began his career in Hong Kong on the derivatives desk at Standard Chartered Bank, a large British Bank with offices primarily in emerging markets. As a volunteer, Treasurer Oaks served on the foundation investment committee at Utah Valley University for nine years. He also co-founded two non-profit organizations, the Stella H. Oaks Foundation that provides hope to single mothers through scholarships, and FIRST Utah Robotics a series of four programs that inspire children K-12 to pursue STEM careers. He is a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of Salt Lake City, the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association of San Francisco, and holds both designations in addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Brigham Young University. He completed a Masters of Business Administration at UCLA Anderson School of Business. He and his wife are the parents of six children.-Mark DeLuzio was the first in his family to earn a college degree. After college, Mark was successful in the corporate world, advising senior executives on strategy and tactics in a multitude of diverse industries. For the past 20 years, Mark has been a successful entrepreneur as the founder of a global management consulting company and has received international acclaim as a leader in his field. Mark has been married to his college sweetheart, Diane, for 41 years. They have two sons, Scott and Steven, who joined the military after the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Steve was killed in action in Afghanistan while his brother Scott was fighting just miles away. Like their two sons, Mark and his wife continue to give back to America by dedicating themselves to various military charities. Mark has also helped countless Veterans to start successful businesses. Mark and Diane have three beautiful grandchildren who are the joy of their lives.-After retiring from a very successful run on Wall Street in his late 20's, Jeff had an escalating drug and alcohol addiction. By the age of 34 he was living on the streets of Phoenix and was arrested many times for homeless “survival” crimes that soon grew into non-violent drug motivated felonies. Finally, facing a longer-term prison sentence of 4 years, his sentencing judge diverted him to The Salvation Army Harbor Light Drug Treatment Program. Now Jeff serves as Chairman for Salvation Army of Arizona.   -Connect with us:www.breakingbattlegrounds.voteTwitter: www.twitter.com/Breaking_BattleFacebook: www.facebook.com/breakingbattlegroundsInstagram: www.instagram.com/breakingbattlegroundsLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/breakingbattlegrounds This is a public episode. His previous book, Lengthen Your Smile, is a best-selling collection of brief stories (most of them funny) that illustrate faith-based ideals. Richard and his wife, Laurie, have three children and four grandchildren. Highlights 02:10 Introduction to Richard and his book, 3 Keys to Help You Give a Better Talk 07:50 Richard's book was inspired by David O. You are normally assigned the topic but take the time to pray and read and figure out the objective that you need to teach. 14:30 Is your lesson objective clear? How can you make it clear? 16:20 Richard shares his own personal experience of giving a talk and creating a clear objective and an attention grabbing opener. 17:45 Principle 2: Share examples People love stories. They connect with stories. We remember stories more than anything else we talk about. Stories are a way to show our personality. 22:30 Richard shares how he uses his own personal stories to connect with people. 28:00 Tips for sharing stories Keep a journal of your stories. They should be simple and day-to-day things. It doesn't have to be a huge experience. Reference scripture stories or other people's stories but bring your own personal experience into it. 32:45 Principle 3: Emphasize application What can people do because of the things that I've spoken today? Emphasize how people can apply principles to help them live the gospel every day. 36:00 The typical sacrament meeting talk is on a conference talk. We are putting their talk in our words. It makes us humble and gives us the experience of leaning on the Holy Spirit. 45:00 Is humor appropriate in a sacrament talk? 51:00 Tips for preparing a talk when you are assigned a topic or given a conference talk to speak to 53:50 Oftentimes our objective in Sunday School is to cover the material or certain chapters of scripture. We need to take the time to search those scriptures to find an objective that will help people live their lives. 57:15 Write down notes, quotes, and make an outline but don't write out your talk verbatim.
